Rei Hiroe (広江 礼威, Hiroe Rei, born 5 December 1972) is a Japanese manga artist who is best known for his latest manga, Black Lagoon. When he is working on doujin comics he goes by the name Red Bear and TEX-MEX. Hiroe's manga were originally published by Kadokawa Shoten in the 1990s but none were complete. As a response Hiroe transferred to Shogakukan in the early 2000s, where all of his manga released before Black Lagoon were republished and re-released.
Book starts with the craziest showdown ever. Roberta's colleague (also commando maiden :)) enters our famous pub in Roanapur and soon Colombians come in searching for Roberta. In a firefight that would make John Wick jealous, including mounted weapons on vehicles and lots of machine huns, our maiden manages to defeat them and very soon links her employer, young master Lovelace from Venezuela, with Lagoon team. Their request is simple - they want to save Roberta and bring her back home to Venezuela without shedding unnecessary blood in Roanapur. And for this they need Lagoon's assistance.
What follows are very careful investigations and negotiations between Roanapur's crime organizations on how to proceed. Knowledgeable on havoc wreaked by Roberta in the past and young Lovelace's goal to bring Roberta home they want to solve the situation with minimal losses. Nobody knows who to trust but everybody knows that fragile piece in Roanapur may not last if revenge warfare takes place especially since Roberta's targets seem to be commandos from USA, those she considers responsible for bombing attack that killed her master (young Lovelace's father). If organized crime knows one thing then it is that targeting and engaging any official government operatives is safe way to doom and utter loss.
The Roberta revenge arc feels a bit too long. It started in the previous volume, took the whole of this one and continues (and finally concludes?) in the next. I wouldn't mind if it didn't feel somewhat stretched or was more engaging. It's odd mix of not so much Roberta but not that much of Lagoon gang either and the other parts are filled with other shady people of Roanapur and Gracia Lovelace. The delicate balance of the mafias is alright content but I don't really care for Garcia or Fabiola. I liked the almost honest and real conversation between Revy and Rock but that didn't go very far.
This is the first Black Lagoon book I've read as I bought it in a bulk lot with some other manga. It's fairly slow and a bit boring. Not a fan of the art tbh, find the balloon placement a little incoherent so I won't be trying any more volumes.
And Roberta's revenge arc continues. And it goes on and on and on while the Black Lagoon crew plays second fiddle once more. I'm really tired of them being guest stars in their own manga. I can't remember the last time the series actually focused on them. I miss the good old days when it was Rock, Revy, Benny and Dutch against the world. These days, it's like Benny and Dutch almost don't even exist anymore. I get that the author is doing some world building but it's at the expense of the main characters. I freely admit that I don't like it. In this book, I liked only two or three scenes, those that focused on Rock and Revy. The rest was all about politicking, gangsters sitting around tables and talking about other gangsters. Not my cuppa.
I do own volume 8 - I bought this manga in bulk long time ago - but I don't think I will continue it after that. I fell in love with the manga because I was smitten with the Black Lagoon crew. But the series has been less and less about them and more and more about Roanapur in general with each volume. And that's not what I signed up for.
