One terrorist blast changed Master Tobias Zimmer's entire existence, relegating him to being nothing more than just a "Coppies" because of the metal replacing his flesh. As the once future Shogun of moon colony Orion 1, he now idles his time away keeping tabs on the Loyalists while his father and brother broker negotiations with the Earth Consortium.
A confrontation with his childhood enemy, Dr. Thorsten Nordenfelt, sets into motion events that cannot be undone and puts Tobias's sheltered heart at the center of the colony's attempts to free itself from the repressive Earth's rule.
Freddy grew up in the Midwest, playing sports and running around outside. And honestly, that much has not changed since Freddy was small and throwing worms at other kids, expect worm throwing has been replaced with a healthy geocaching addiction. Freddy enjoys traveling and holds the view a person should continually to learn about new things and people whenever possible.
Freddy's contemporary LGBTQ book, Incubation: Finding Peace 2, won 3rd Place - Best Gay Erotic Fiction in the 2012 Rainbow Awards. In 2013, Freddy's story, Internment, tied for 3rd Place - Best Gay Fantasy in the Rainbow Awards. Freddy's steampunk/SF story, Feel Me, was a finalist and honorable mention in the 2014 Rainbow Awards for SF.
Not all gay science fiction is romance, not should it be. For those looking to read only romance, this is not the story for you. However, if you're looking for SF with gay protagonists, I highly recommend this novella.
Sometimes steampunk slides into fantasy, but this alternate Earth setting stays firmly rotted in SF, taking into account how solutions to space travel and space colonization could have been different if steam tech had remained the primary source of power on our world. The world-building is superb, letting us feel the setting around us, walk beside the characters.
And the characters themselves? Imperfect, flawed people with secrets. Tobias seems prickly and unpleasant at first glance, but we understand quickly the depth of his dedication and his pain. Thorsten seems flippant, arrogant, too sure of himself, but his own mask hides motives we don't realize until much later.
From the local colony slang to every personal interaction, the story flows seamlessly on without throwing us out of the narrative until the final, shattering scenes. For Science Fiction in which the heroes just happen to be gay, this is one of my favorites of this or any other year.

Summary:
The human race has fought to survive and overcome many obstacles by using their ingenuity to solve seemingly insurmountable odds. Like in the story of Babble, the world came together to find a way to the moon by building an elevator to get there. In the process, many individuals lost their lives, but they did survive and like the explorers of old they created their own language and culture. The colony's, Orion 1, struggle for independence from the Earth has led to violence injuring many in the colony at the hands of the Loyalists. Tobias's world changed after he was almost killed in a bombing that left him a coppies, disfigured needing metal replacement parts. His injury lost his place as the next Shogun of the colony changing his life forever. Even with all this, Tobias was determined to do what he could to protect his people of the colony who love him even after his father turned against him. It was sad how the Coppies were not truly considered people and shunned by members of the government. Tobias's knowledge and commitment was proven over and over again as he fought to keep everyone safe and worked to invent new ways of making their lives better. Thorsten wanted Tobias for years and now he might just get his wish. As Tobias and Thorsten began to settle through their differences the attacks continue endangering all of their lives. This was a fast paced story that took a turn that I had never expected and one that I very much enjoyed!
5 stars until end where I think I'm generous giving it 3.75 stars. It wrecked me.
I lost my review which is so frustrating. I don't know how I could have lost it since all of my notes are saved to the iCloud and I wrote it in the notes app on my iDevice, but there you have it. Apple strikes again. ARGH! So I'm just going to paste the notes themselves. I'm too annoyed to write the review again. Sorry this is so pathetic.
Oh dear. Elevator to the sky? Seriously? I think this technology supposed to be based off of Foundation by Isaac Asimov but that was explained much better and really wasn't an elevator.
You can't see the color of eyes like that silhouetted against a dark sky.
Not really steampunk. They can do all that but are still mechanical? That's dumb.
Despite the inauspicious start, this is interesting, hints of what is happening without spelling it out but with a whole new world and plot so it isn't just ultra easy to guess.
Evil evil evil evil.
Evil evil evil evil evil.
This author is cruel.
It was five stars and then it destroyed me. Yeah . Fuck a duck. I'm effing destroyed. Not just sad but ???? This is going to hurt for days.
