This book is different to the others in the series because the pieces here were originally wriiten for a newspaper column. Everything in here is, however, set in Bilbury and involves the usual village characters (plus some new ones). `I have just read Bilbury Pie (recommended by a local library). I enjoyed it so much I read it like eating a box of chocolates - two or three chapters at a time to make it last and savour the flavour. I thank you for giving people pleasure and plenty of smiles.' - Mrs G, Banbury, England The author of Bilbury Pie, Vernon Coleman, is a Sunday Times bestselling author as well as a qualified doctor. His books have sold over two million copies in hardback and paperback in the UK and have been translated into 24 languages. His novel Mrs Caldicot's Cabbage War was turned into an award winning movie starring Pauline Collins as Mrs Caldicot. His other books include Mr Henry Mulligan, Mrs Caldicot's Knickerbocker Glory, Secrets of Paris and Paris in my Springtime. This one is different than the others as it is a series of short stories that apparently were articles the author wrote for a newspaper. Same characters as well as some new ones and they all have the same warmth and humor associated with this series.
This was the weakest book in the series. I usually stay away from books that are a collection of short stories because you can't get to know the characters well in the short format. Since I already knew the characters from the other books, I thought I would enjoy this. Wrong. A few of the stories are good, but most of them should be called anecdotes rather than stories because there's not much to them. And worst of all, several of the stories are downright sad and/or depressing.
I've always enjoyed reading short stories but this was an exceptional short story book! Very entertaining from start to finish. And like the other books by Coleman, it had me laughing and hungry for more!
Many of these stories were fun to read, but some of them were very sad. Most of them are very short, so this is a good book to pick up if you want to read for a few minutes and don't want to get dragged into a story. They do seem to jump around in terms of time, so that can get a bit confusing. It was nice to see some of the characters again, and I laughed when Thumper wouldn't tell the author how he pulled something off because he didn't want it ending up in one of his books.

Many short stories that seem to be leftovers from the first five books. Many of them told very sad stories of cruelty to animals or helpless people. So very different from the first five volumes. Not what I was expecting. Very disappointed.
Enjoyed these short stories. I like the homey feel of Dr Coleman's writing. There are all of the familiar characters that abound in the Bilbury Chronicles in these lively and occasionally sad stories.
Unbearably funny to unbearably sad in just a matter of pages. These characters feel like friends. I'm going to miss them terribly when I finish the series.
