மலர் மஞ்சம்

தி. ஜானகிராமனின் இரண்டாவது நாவல் ‘மலர் மஞ்சம்’. ‘கிராம ஊழிய’னில் 1940களின் தொடக்கத்தில் தொடராக வெளிவந்த ‘அமிர்தம்’ போலவே இந்த நாவலும் ‘சுதேச மித்திரன்’ வாரப்பதிப்பில் 1960ஆம் ஆண்டில் தொடராக வெளிவந்தது. நாவலாசிரியராக தி. ஜானகிராமனுக்குக் கவனம்பெற்றுத் தந்த படைப்பும் இதுவே. பாத்திரச் சித்திரிப்பு, பின்புலவலு, மொழிச் சரளம், வாசிப்பின் உயிரோட்டம் ஆகிய கூறுகளால் தனித்துநின்ற, நிற்கும் படைப்பு. மானுட சேஷ்டைகளைக் கூர்ந்துநோக்கும் தி. ஜானகிராமனின் தீரா வியப்பும் ஆண் - பெண் உறவுச் சிக்கல்கள் பற்றிய அவரது ஓயாத விசாரணையும் துலங்கும் நாவல் இது. பலதார மணம், மரபை மீறிய காதல் என்று எழுதப்பட்ட கால அளவில் பேசப்பட்ட நாவல் இன்றைய வாசிப்பில் புதிய காலத்தின் கேள்விகளையும் முன்வைக்கிறது. நான்கு மனைவியரை மணந்துகொள்ளும் ஆண் அந்த உறவு களின் சுமை தாளாமல் ஆன்மீகத்தில் அடைக்கலம் தேடுவது ஓர் இழை. அந்த உறவில் பிறந்த பெண் தனது உரிமையை மௌனமாக நிலைநாட்டுவது இன்னொரு இழை. இந்த இரு இழைகளிலிருந்து விரியும் கதை, பாலி என்ற பாத்திரத்தால் சமகாலத் தன்மை பெறுகிறது. தனது பிறப்புக்கு முன்பே குடும்பம் பேசிவைத்த ஆண் துணையை ஏற்பதா அல்லது தனது மனம் விரும்பும் துணையை வரித்துக்கொள்வதா என்ற பாலியின் தடுமாற்றமும் தேர்வுமே கதையை இன்றைக்கும் பொருந்தும் ஒன்றாக ஆக்குகிறது. ஒருவகையில் பாலி, அவளுடைய காலத்தை மீறியவள். தனக்குத் தளை பூட்டிய மரபுகளை உடைத்தவள். பாலியே தி. ஜானகிராமனின் பிற்காலப் பெண் பாத்திரங்களின் மூலப் பிரதிமை. -சுகுமாரன்

About the author

Thi . Janakiraman (also known as Thi Jaa, or T. Janakiraman ) is one of the major figures of 20th century Tamil fiction. He worked as a civil servant. His writing included accounts of his travels in Japan and the Crimea.

His best-known novel is Mogamul (Thorn of Desire), in which feminine emotions are explored with a story spun around delicate feelings. His short stories such as "Langdadevi" (a lame horse) and "Mulmudi" (Crown of Thorns) follow the same style. Thi Jaa wrote about one hundred short stories and a dozen novels. Two of his novels, Amma Vandhaal and Marappasu, were translated into English as "Sins of Appu's Mother" and "Wooden Cow" respectively. In 1979, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil for his short story collection Sakthi Vaidhiyam. Some of his other notable works are Malar Manjam, Uyirthen and Sembaruthi.

A typical Thi.Ja book. The native culture, human behaviour, psychology of young adulthood all well narrated.

I am fan of Janakiraman. He is very good in bringing out very tricky and fine aspects of sexuality. The end is very good.
