Overall I thought the tone of this book was largely negative and not encouraging. I much prefer Voices From The Past edited by Richard Rushing.

The beauties of an anthology such as this one is that the reader is offered entrée into the minds of different authors, in this case twelve prominent Puritan pastors/thinkers/authors. The drawback of an anthology such as this one is that the reader does not find him/herself on the same wavelength with all the authors; some have greater appeal than others, more points of understanding, recognition, and shared insight. And such I found this book. That the Puritans were deep thinkers, thoroughly versed in (Reformed) theology there can be little doubt; that this particular reader grasped and understood everything is by no means a given. I welcomed making the acquaintance, though, of two writers known to me previously only by reputation: Stephen Charnock and Thomas Watson. I treasured their writings...and will try to explore them further. -- Recommended strongly if this sort of thing has appeal for you...

Great introduction to the thoughts of several prominent Puritan authors/preachers. I admire their devotion to piety and how their faith informs the entirety of their lives. Modern readers often have difficulty with the phrasing of writers in that era; these daily "bite" size renderings encourage deeper thinking and further reading.
