A gripping mystery novel that will have you reading all night.
The Rebecca Heilshorn case has drawn the attention of the Justice Department. Agent Jennifer Aiken is going after XList, the escort service implicated in Rebecca’s murder. Meanwhile, Healy learns about the death of an old friend and comes out of hiding to privately investigate. His friend’s death was not accidental, but connected to the same black market – XList. Jennifer Aiken is close to identifying the main force behind XList when she is kidnapped. Tortured and interrogated by ruthless operatives, Jennifer’s only hope is that Brendan will get to her in time.
Timothy James Brearton lives in the Adirondack Mountains with his wife and three children. He's loved thrillers and police stories for most of his life. HABIT follows broken cop Brendan Healy down the rabbit hole of a human trafficking conspiracy. DEAD GONE delivers Florida cop Tom Lange into a criminal underworld and THE KILLING TIME introduces FBI agent Shannon Ames, a country girl in the big city.
I found this book to be fragmented and confusing. Too much of the writing seemed to go on and on about the main character's thoughts and it left the reader with big gaps of ??? A good mystery catches me and pulls me in within the first couple paragraph as paragraphs and then I can't put the book down until I've read the last page. This book didn't do that.
That old saying, "Why use 10 words when 100 will do?" Springs to mind. The constant use of obscure words is also frustrating. I found myself skipping lots of pages, without losing the plot, for what that was worth. Not the best use of my time, I'm afraid.
I've been eagerly devouring anything written by T.J. Brearton in the last few months, and for me this book did not disappoint. I love that the author really knows his way around Westchester County, where a lot of book takes place. It really adds a sense of realism, where I can actually picture the locations in the various parts of the book. Too often you will read a book where you can tell that author did little to no research about the places their book visits, and it really takes away from the story. Mr Brearton does a fine job of setting the scene, making me wonder what diners the characters are actually in, or making me want to go on a ride to see if I can figure out other places in the book.
The final book in this series is available on Kindle Unlimited, and I'm tempted to start my free subscription to it just so I can read more. But I think I will fork over a few bucks and actually buy the e-book instead as a thanks for the number of good books I've had the pleasure to read from the author.
A most excellent 5 star read, again! wow, that is some thrilling, pulse pounding turn the page as fast as you can stuff.... Conspiracy theories, bad guys, good guys, who knows what kind of guys. "Change of clothes, a goddamn buzz cut, and she would go and find him. But first, she slept" Really? So glad she can sleep! Good thing I have book 3 of this trilogy ready to go.
We’ve got a couple different points of view, Brendan and Jennifer. It’s been a couple years since the last book and he’s now a PI, brought back into the game for the funeral of his friend. She’s an agent working on the Titan case, actually knows as much as Brendan. I really wanted some answers and I got them along with more questions. There’s pages and pages of just internal monologue about government, politics, money, black markets, just everything. It’s difficult to follow and put the pieces together through the fog of conspiracy and such. I don’t like to skim words just in case I’ve something important, but I never would’ve finished if I hadn’t skimmed.
I thought I was reading a book of suspense and drama but I was wrong. Some action with a half plot, sure, but the huge majority of this novel is filled with wild and outrageous conspiracies from every man with owner a million dollars and every industrial company. Any I believe in, absolutely, but this story went extremely overboard into the land of tooth fairies and goblins. If you want a book of everybody is involved in some continental conspiracy, then this is for you, otherwise, forget about it.
I love the way this story comes together. Brendan, always seems to be one step away from danger. Yet, even in those dangerous situations, he manages to assemble clues. Whilst being miles away from from putting it together, he manages to keep on toiling away trying to solve this case. It is only the second part of the trilogy, so we know we have a bit to go, before we work it all out, but the story is intriguing enough, to get us sucked in enough, to want to read the final installment.
I May Not Be Smart Enough for This One. I listened to the first book in this series and enjoyed it. But this one just couldn't capture and keep my attention. As with the first in the series, there are a lot of moving parts and a fairly large cast.
What the first book had that this addition lacked was action. This part of the story seemed to be a more cerebral game, so I'm just going to declare myself incompetent and move on. Conspiracy theorists who enjoy long, intense dialog and don't require much thrill in their thriller may find this an enjoyable story.
Adventure and intrigue surround Branden as he tries to figure out how his friend detective Argon died. It leads him to some answers and some near misses with death for him, a government agent and his new friend Sloan. He is still in danger and is not sure what to do. Time for book three for the rest of the story. Great second book in the series.
Totally captured my interest!! This novel is basically a continuance of the first book of this series and was impossible to put down. I'm on my way to download the third book as I must know what is going to happen to Healy.
Ok... Now I can't wait to read the next book, the final chapters to end the trilogy?? All that's going through my mind is, can this be real?? I can only hope not??
The loose ends from the first book are picked up here but the narrative is slow moving and there is not a proper ending - I am drawn to go straight into the next book. Enjoyed this, but it is an episode not a stand-alone book.
I am really enjoying this series!! There is so much going on it’s hard to keep up with. There’s lot of twists and turns too. Can’t wait to read the next one!!
I can’t wrap my head around living like this individual, however this is really intriguing. The lot thickens and makes you want t continue reading this series.
I enjoyed the first book in the series so much, I was glad to see that this will be a trilogy! This second book picks up where the last left off, and it's packed full of action. Really enjoyable. I did get a little lost with some of the political rhetoric in the story, and sometimes it felt like the characters were espousing the author's views on things maybe? But I do like the overall plot of the story, and the political machinations work for what's going on. I look forward to the third book! You better not do a George RR Martin to is with that one, Mr Brearton!
As another reviewer commented, this book was too confusing and fragmented. It left far more questions than answers. Took too long to get to any real "thrilling/suspenseful" parts, and just was a pretty big mess, in my opinion. I won't bother reading more. Not worth it to me.
I bought or received this book through BookBub.com. It took me a while to get to it. Once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. Wish I had read No. 1 in the trilogy first. I'll read it now, and then will read No. 3. Lots of interesting twists, and the basis of the story really ought to make every reading consider the Black Ops of our government and of every government.
I found the first book and the second book chilling..... I cannot wait until the third comes out.you have here good guys and bad guys, corporate greed, money and power and of course murder.. It's a twisty plot I'm enjoying very much.
I enjoyed the 2nd book in the trilogy as much as the first. I love the writing style of this author. The story is action packed and dramatic. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Twists and turns abound. Cannot wait for the 3rd in the trilogy.
I really enjoyed this story, unfortunately, you have to read book 3 to find out how it all ends. Brearton is a born story teller. His characters are believable and human. Lots of suspense with a rapid-fire pace that makes it hard to put down. Looking forward to the conclusion.
Characters are real enough in. This story and it's like big brother all over again . The real reason this story rings true is the utter corruption of government that no one really can see..
Survivors? There were no survivors in this book. I would not recommend it to anyone. It may be correct about what our world has turned in to. If so, we are all lost and there are no survivors.
I liked this book and going to give it five stars until the end. Actually that is why i gave it four stars. There was no end. I loathe books with no end.
Good storyline, great characters, intriguing. Leaves you hanging at the end. No closure, left open. To me to open. Could have ended just a little better.
