While snorkeling off the coast of Florida, twenty-five-year-old Carter Viss was struck by a 36-foot triple-engine boat, leaving him in the wake with mangled legs, a missing arm, and drowning in a sea of red.
His parents canceled Thanksgiving Day plans at their Colorado home and boarded a red-eye flight, not knowing if their son would be alive in the morning.
Found in the Wake is a true story of rescue, recovery, and resilience with gripping testimonies by Carter, his mom’s candid reflections, and his father’s raw narratives.
Their perspectives weave an inspiring tale of loss, surgeries, doubt, faith, doctors, boating safety, music, dive flags, sea turtles, miracles, and forgiveness.
The book serves as a catalyst to enhance ocean safety for swimmers, divers, snorkelers, and boaters alike.
As Carter put it soon after his breathing tube was removed, “I can have more impact now than before the accident.”
This is an incredible story. Trauma and tragedy find life and purpose in God’s plan. A truly inspiring read that can reach anyone - no matter where they are at in life or what they have or have not experienced. A book that transcends age and any other limiting and dividing factor. The lessons woven into these pages - the faith - is relevant to all. This was an incredible story that I picked up immediately upon receiving it and could barely put it down. I’ve annotated all over my borrowed copy and will need to purchase my own print copy. I highly recommend this read. This story will live with me always and I’ll raise my children on lessons contained within these pages. Tangible expressions of forgiveness, persistence, overcoming, and so much more. After a 15 year break, I returned to piano this past year and so the musical threads resonated deeply with me.
This is an amazing true story. Carter’s life could have been over. But he fought hard, trusted God and came out of this tragedy a better person. This is not only Carters story but his families story.
