Words can’t really describe how special this book is. What started as the Atencio/McCullough family’s hope to create a comprehensive way to remember and share the story of a remarkable member of their family and his legacy turned into a truly well crafted, well-researched, and vibrantly fun life story all packaged in a biography of one of the most influential men of Walt Disney’s to ever touch millions upon millions of people’s lives, even if many of them didn’t realize it.
The reason it’s so well researched, of course, is because it’s quite literally packed full of untold stories from many firsthand, immediate family members with things like X’s illustrated love letters to his wife, his first portfolio test that got him the job at Disney, and small anecdotes about the genesis of ideas for well known attractions that no one in the world could have possibly come across in publicly available information.
The artwork contained in this book from across X’s lifetime is absolutely breathtaking and so lovely to see on large, coffee table sized pages! So much care and love went into tracking down and narrowing all the essential pieces of work to tell X’s story. The photographs, some familiar, many never before seen, are seamlessly woven into the journey of his life through each chapter. As a history lover, I deeply enjoyed seeing so many familiar places and stories through the lens of photographs from his time.
Reading through this book from cover to cover is an absolute delight as well. It’s a fascinating life story, and learning about the historical context surrounding his upbringing is essential to feeling like you really got to know X better. It’s simply a fun read, especially if you’re a history lover like me :) Stories about his time in World War II or his early days as an animator, all prior to his work at WED Enterprises, are parts of the book I think even the most well researched X Atencio enthusiast will learn something new from.
I think anyone who walks away with this book will have:
1. Some insanely cool artwork and historical photography from a legend’s life.
2. A greater appreciation for how lucky we are to have this book through learning how humble this man was and knowing he never would have told his story like this himself.
3. A deeper understanding of how all his life experiences and Disney career moments leading up to WED Enterprises clearly prepared him to make his mark on history (beyond anything he could have ever imagined) with his influence on the world through Pirates, Haunted Mansion, and beyond.
I cannot recommend this book enough. It’s such a special way to honor a great man, preserve his legacy, and share so many wonderful and untold stories with the world!

Fascinating biography of someone I have known OF for quite some time... But to see the full scope of his life and career put the Imagineering parts that I had heard about in a really interesting context.
