I didn't care for this book. In fact, I feel that books that just list problems with two paragraph of explanation or "solution" don't really explain or offer solutions and actually create more anxiety in new keepers than educate them. Old keepers just don't need to read a list of possible problems. I was also irritated that some of the captions of the photos didn't indicate what was being illustrated. For example--pg 99 displays a photo of a chicken leg next to a 2 paragraph entry about scaly leg mites, but the photo doesn't indicate whether or not we are seeing a normal leg or a mite-covered leg. That frustrates me.
I actually breezed through this book just before I picked up my first batch of chicks 2 months ago now. I didn't find it particularly helpful at the time, but now that I have the little beasties this book has been coming in handier. Today for example, as I ponder mycoplasma and all its implications, I find that my problem solver actually has a pretty informative section. I imagine this will continue to come in handy. It is a practical guide, which I appreciate as well. Running the thin line between pet and livestock can be challenging, but this book makes a go of it.
A solid offering for the books you might want on hand when keeping chickens. Problems are grouped by area and offer good advice about what is normal and when to be concerned about other behaviors or medical conditions. Also covers so very basic chicken keeping knowledge that will help understand chickens, housing, and taking care of them.
the book is just okay. You can find better information online backyard chickens with more indepth information from chicken owners. I still have a flock, but passed the book on, as I know I won't utilize it to care for my chickens.
great book, lots of helpful thoughts on various situations that may arise. i prefer to think of this book as a 'keep a look - out for' rather than a problem fixer- it's easier to be pro-active rather than to try to fix what has become a problem.
An alright book. Good for people that are brand new to chicken keeping I think. But there were a lot of unnecessarily long explanations and a lot of it was just common sense. Easy to read though and the diseases section had some helpful information.
