L. M. Davis loves great storytelling. She needs nothing more than a good book and a comfy chair to be happy. She was born in the south, raised in the north, and has a few degrees under her belt. She still hasn’t gotten her black cat, but she thinks about it everyday. Her thoughts go something like this: "I really should get a cat." For now, she contents herself with spoiling the pets of her friends and family. Posers is the second book in the Shifters Novel series.

Spoiler alert!– There are spoilers for Part I and Part II in the following review.

Check out my previous review of Part I and Part II where I had a fear that L.M.Davis would not be able to pull it all together and run out of ideas at the end. Skinless Part III did deliver! Part III deepen Ankh and Luca’s feelings for each other as she tells him all her secrets, even showing herself in her alien form. I love how he is shocked and afraid when she shows her true body, but when he sees her eyes Luca knows it’s the same Ankh that he loves. Ankh’s love for Luca solidifies as he staunchly stays with her, even after he knows her secrets, as they near the terrifying skinless, and as they realize they have to enter the skinless ship to save Ankh and her mother. Even though Luca has nothing to personally gain from continuing to help Ankh and everything to lose, his loyalty is unshakable. This is first and foremost a beautifully crafted love story. The point of view changes from Ankh to Luca so we learn innermost feelings of both of them.

Even though the emphasis is on the relationship between Ankh and Luca, the suspense of finding Ankh’s mom before her embryo brother kills her drives the book forward. My interest never flagged in any of the three parts.

Although a complete book, the ending of Skinless could definitely lead right into a sequel or even a series. I can’t help thinking along the lines of a next book, and I’m sorry one of the main characters is killed off because that could have developed into an exciting subplot. But even without that character, I’d love to know more of the back story of the prophecy and the entangled past of the KInd and the Skinless.

A novel in three parts–it’s a new and different format. And, there are pros and cons. I’m going to liken releasing the three parts at different times to eating a package of candy–you can shove all of the candy in your mouth at once, love it, but then it’s gone and over and forgotten by the next day. Or, you can savor one piece at a time and spread out the enjoyment. Many times, I’ve devoured a book that was too good to put down, loved it and then I was on to the next book, all too easily forgetting the book I read too quickly. With Skinless, the suspense built between the parts, and I thought a lot about what might be coming up while I was waiting for the next part. The con is that the interest built up, but then I started forgetting about it as I read other books in between.

Things I loved: The lovely love story, the changing point of view, the idea of mental telepathy as the sole means of communication for the Kind, the action and quick pace of all three parts.

Things that were not so good: The skinless were indefatigable and had superhuman strength in Part I but were jelly-like wimps by Part III that were too easily overcome.

Overall: Five stars! An exciting, fun, romantic read!

Picks up where Part II leaves off... Luca doesn't know what to think anymore. His heart is on the line now more than ever before. After finding out Ankh's true nature he's terrified yet he can't just leave her. Not now, when she needs him the most. Torn between doing the right thing and running, Luca has a choice to make and he must make it quickly.

Ankh's driven away the only one she's ever cared for, the emptiness is too much, her body weakening by the day. With her and her brother's life at stake she must continue even if it means without Luca to help her. Ankh's running out of time, her body's shutting down and her life's energy depleting. Finding her mother is the only answer, but what she finds will never be forgotten.
