The moment I finished the Cranberry Inn series, I was dying to start Viper’s book. I just knew I would love it. Seriously, Viper is so funny and my type of hero. What I didn’t expect was for it to be so emotional. I had so many tears and feelings while listening to this book! My heart broke for Viper and all he’d been through.

I don’t want to talk too much about this story, because I think it’s best to go in a bit blind. I didn’t even know who the heroine was and when I found out my jaw dropped a little- but in a good way. I loved that I was surprised and I loved even more the way things turned out between Viper and his woman.

Another thing I loved about this book is Viper and his relationship with his Gams. My Grandma was the closest person to me until she passed away four years ago, so I could relate to him on such a deep level with this.
“Sometimes being comforted by someone who loves you unconditionally was the most basic necessity in the world.”

I’m a little bummed that the second book isn’t available via audio book, because if it was I would jump to it right away… I guess I’ll have to settle for reading it. I know I won’t be waiting long to get to it! I can’t wait for more Viper!

I will not tell you a lot about this book because I believe this is one of those storylines that the blinder you go, the better.
Viper goes through life and woman the same way he plays hockey: hard and fast. Until something terrible and unexpected happens, leaving him not only in a dark place, but also in a new reality he never wanted to deal with. And while he tries to make everything right the cement walls around his heart slowly start to break, but can he let go of the guilt and his past and allow himself to be happy?

I liked Viper in the previous book so I was happy when I heard he’s was going to have his own book and I’m glad he finally have his chance at love.
Despite liking this book, and I did, even being more angst than what I was expecting, the reason why I’m giving it 3,5 stars it’s because for me, this storyline isn’t my favorite and unfortunately that reflected on my overall liking of the book.
However, it was very well written, the story was strong and it was an slow and engaging pace. If you liked Viper, you shouldn’t miss this one out!

Characters Development: The heroine was good. Taking the circumstances she suddenly saw herself, I say she handled it very well! Viper was also a good hero, I was afraid of his “man-whorish” ways, but once he realized what he wanted he had no trouble changing. My problem with him was that he was funny and with a great humor in the previous books, and although understanding why he was more closed-off in this one, I missed his funny ways. It was great to see more of Kacie and Brody and I really hope a book about Andy is in the cars.
Steam: Some heated moments.

“Sometimes being comforted by someone who loves you unconditionally was the most basic necessity in the world.”

Buddy-read this with pretty woman ♕.

When you are reading a romance book and your favorite and most interesting character in the book is the cool grandma you know something is not right. Actually, cool grandma has to be one of my favorite characters in a long long time and I would be interested in a book for herself finding love again, like damn sign me up. The point is I had high expectation and they were not met, at all.

First I will recall the things I enjoyed because I like to think I am a more optimistic person we all know is a lie, but shhh let’s pretend. I was smiling in all scenes involving kids, is like a vulnerable side for me. I met watching families playing around and tattooed guys being careful and trying to change diapers, all wonderful and heartwarming .Although if you show me a baby in real life I would probably be already at the door leaving, not for me, not at all. I also felt a lot of chemistry between Viper and his psychologist, oh wait, that’s not our main couple, ups. Okay, then I will give it to the mind-fucking twist at the start of the book, truly tragically amazing. I am a person who can usually predict all twists so I am satisfied when they are executed well, but in this one, I never saw it coming. And for our heroine, I am not gonna mention her name as I didn’t know who it was until 50% in, she represented grief well, then again I was left wanting more depth. Is that it? Yep, yep, it is.

Moving on to the negative and bare with me if I get somehow ranty. I dislike Viper a lot. At the start of the book, I had tolerance because I thought you know what he must be just a likable douche type of hero, then scenes with kids happened which yey, but every time he opened his mouth my blood boiled so I disliked him quite a lot. I just don’t like a guy who gets surprised when the psychologist/ dr. is a female, because god forbade such an exotic thing. Okay in his defense it wasn’t only him, it was every character, seriously what is so surprising for a dr. to be female? Then he proceeds to try to have sex with her because obviously, any female has the only use to be fuckable, to which she said no, and he immediately classified her as bitch. Oh, and when she laughed his train of thought was: “yes it seems big enough” UHU RED FLAG. Seriously you have a problem if the first thing you think when you see a woman laugh is oh big enough to put my dick inside. Not hot. Our hero way of insulting his friend is always such a pussy, such a girl, sorry I don’t roll with that. I can rescue something about him though like: tattoos, handsome, cooks, like his granny and is good with kids.

The rest of things I disliked would be lack of chemistry, I get why we couldn’t feel it at the start but it went from none to all so fast I wasn’t there for it. Also, I wanted more angst and tension, but because the romance or whatever just started to develop about 65% in then it didn’t have the time for it. And LACK OF PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION, holy shit. You know how you usually get tired because authors mention a character’s blue eyes or red hair every single chapter. Well, I would have seriously preferred that to getting to know our heroine had blue eyes and blond hair after 60% mark, also the only thing I got from Viper was that he was tall and had tattoos. So yeah I was not surprised when other reviews represented our heroine with brown hair and green eyes, truly not their fault. And yes I am so mad about that because I need the physical descriptions for my collage at the start of the review.

Anyway I feel that if you don’t have any problem with the above then pick this up and enjoy.

CAN TWO WRONGS EVER MAKE A RIGHT?

Viper is a man of THREE RULES:

Rule Number One: - always wear a condom. Always.

Rule Number Two: - never go down on one-night stands. Ever.

Rule Number Three: - if I brought them back to my place, as opposed to my car, an alley, or the bar bathroom, we did not have sex in my bedroom. Always the guest room.

As the defender on his hockey team he is known for his manwhoring ways. Those ways have kept him from deeply connecting with any lady on a “I want to have a relationship with you” kind of way. As one of his teammate points out to him->he has a cement heart.

As the story progressed I did something I never do- I read the blurb. The reason I stopped to look at the blurb was because I had no clue who the heroine was going to be in this story. To my surprise the blurb did not indicate who was going to shatter his cement heart. Early on in the story there were several women that seemed to have Viper’s attention and I wondered if they would ultimately end up with him. But in the end who he unexpectedly falls for made sense.

Gam (Viper’s grandma) was one of my favorite characters. She lived life like the saying, Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present. Gam lived in the moment and had no qualms sharing wisdom she learned over the years with her grandson.

Cement Heart deals with a heavier subject matter than the former books in the series. The situation that lead to Viper letting his guard down was grim but it transformed him from the man he was to the man he became.

I stumbled upon Beth Ehemann last year when I discovered her Cranberry Inn series. She immediately fell into that super sweet category with her nice hero and strong heroine. While that usually isn't my cuppa, her writing and character development drew me in. I became an instant fan.

So imagine my surprise when I discover that Viper has his own story (he makes appearances in the Cranberry Inn series) and it is angsty AF. She drops a bomb in the prologue and I'm left wondering if she can really pull this off... And she did.

Because this is a story that the reader needs to discover on their own, I am not really going to go in to a lot of detail. Viper was a supporting character in the Cranberry Inn series. I highly recommend you read the first 3 books in the Cranberry Inn series before starting this one. He seemed to be loud, careless, and a bit of a manwhore. Ehenmann showed us a different side of him in this book.

Viper is estranged from his parents. Being an only child, the only family he had left was his Grandma and his hockey gang. So when tragedy strikes, it destroys Viper - especially because he blames himself. It starts to affect his career and, honestly, his mental health. It was hard to see our joyful Viper be gloomy and dark. The only thing that seems to keep him going is a promise. A promise he made to his best friend.

A word of advice: If you are going to jump into this interwoven series, read them in this order:

Room for You
Room for More
Room for Just a Little Bit More
Cement Heart
Wild Heart
Even the Score
A Cranberry Inn Christmas

I have heard where people read all the Cranberry Inn series before reading about Viper and Andy and they got spoiled. You're welcome!

When Beth approached me to Beta this book I was like "hell yeah!" Let me get ready for you Viper.

In the all honesty I was scared. Y'all know Viper gets around and I'm allergic to man whores.

As the story began to unfold though, my heart fell to Viper. He owned it. You got to see every thing his walls were blocking with one night stands and womanizing.

He just needed the right woman to break down those walls, even if he didn't think that woman was his.

With laugh out loud moments, tear jerking scenes, and side characters that made me fall even more in love with this series, this book is a must read.

This review is personal. It’s no secret that I adore Beth Ehemann. Through this crazy book world, we were brought together in such an ironic way by having a mutual friend outside of the craziness, someone I have known since I was 5 years old. That’s how Beth and I met. Beth wasn’t an author at the time, but has since published 4 books and been signed by Montlake Publishing for a re-release of the Cranberry Inn series in addition to future new books. To say that I am immensely proud of her is an understatement. Aside from my personal feelings towards Beth, I can say with the utmost integrity and sincerity that Beth Ehemann is a talented and gifted author. I have been blessed to be a beta reader for Beth for all 4 of her books. What amazes me the most about her books is that they are the opposite of her. What I mean by that is, Beth isn’t writing “her story” or writing about things that have happened in “her life”. She is truly creating the most original and endearing characters and storylines. This is a talent! Her instincts amaze me. Her fortitude is so admirable. When she puts pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, she knows what she’s doing and doesn’t stop creating her vision. She does not waver and will fight to stay true these fictional people who have become an extension of her.
So let’s talk about Viper. From his first introduction in Room For You, Viper was a stand out. All readers of the Cranberry Inn series will agree. We were drawn to him. The seemingly bad boy, womanizer. Right? Wrong. In Cement Heart, Beth once again blindsides us all. A trait she possesses as an author that I continually applaud her for, because Viper is more than meets the eye. There is so much more to that tough guy exterior and definitely a crack in what is described as his cement heart. Beth obliterated that cement heart. Cement Heart is a journey. Viper faces some hard truths and devastating realities, and the path he follows takes us to some very unexpected places. His transformation is gut wrenching, heartwarming and hopeful. Cement Heart has all the feels.
Beth introduces some new and truly special stand out characters in Cement Heart. Their relationships with Viper bring a new level of understanding to the heart and soul of this man. I was transported right into the devastation, the downward spiral and the harsh realities that Viper faced. However, as Viper fought his way back, I was rewarded with the courage and strength of a truly unique and complex character. Beth covers it all and somehow makes it absolutely uplifting. And after it all, she brings Viper the ultimate happily ever after that even he did not see coming.
Cement Heart is a romance and a journey of self-discovery. It encompasses the love of family and friendships with tons of wisdom and support. It is without question Beth’s best work to date and that’s saying a lot considering she came right out the gate, setting the bar very high for herself. My awe of her and her talent grows and grows. Not only is she one of my favorite authors, but she is a friend and a sister. I just can’t put any higher stamp of approval on her and her work than that. She amazes me.

5 ‘OMG the feeeeels’ stars!

OMG, this book has just blown me away! It’s the kind of story that it’s best to just dive in and experience without knowing anything going in, just be prepared for feels! I laughed, I cried, my heart broke, and I absolutely fell in love. Every moment in this book is something special and I loved it all.

Viper was introduced during the Cranberry Inn series, and while this book technically follows on from that, featuring a lot of the characters that we have already met (including Brody and Kacie- squee), it can definitely be read as a standalone.

Viper is a pro hockey player. Gorgeous, rich and arrogant, he is a manwhoring badboy who is absolutely shameless when it comes to his exploits. And we get to see him living it up in all of his slutty glory until one moment changes everything.

Six months ago, I was happy. I was playing amazing hockey, had the best friends in the world, fucking whoever I wanted… life was great. In one stupid moment, it all changed , and now I can’t get that happiness back. I don’t remember what happy feels like anymore. Everything is dark and dreary.”

There is an ominous prologue which give you an idea where the story is going, but it still hit me hard in the gut when it happened. OMG, it’s so intense! But it forms the basis for the rest of the story, which concentrates very strongly on Viper and his incredible journey.

The book is written mainly from Viper’s POV, and I LOVE getting inside his head! He’s such a ass, but he feels deeply, and I loved being there with him as he goes through everything that he does. We see his unapologetic arrogance, his heartbreak and his pain, and then his healing as he comes to realise the man that he wants to be, and works to become that man. It’s an amazing transition, and it’s done beautifully! And the love story that blossoms as Viper changes is gorgeous.

For the first time in my life, I’d met a woman who I wanted to hang out with constantly, wanted to know every single thing I could about her, wanted to protect her fiercely, yet she was untouchable.

It’s a painful journey and there are many obstacles for them to face – both individually and together - so it’s a slow burn, but it is heartfelt, realistic, and absolutely beautiful.

“Because I belong here. Because I belong with you. Because as much as you try to fight it, you know you belong with me too … I fell in love with you.”

Holy swoooooon!

But it’s not all heartbreak and deep feels. There are lots of light moments, and many times I laughed out loud at his antics. Firstly, with his boys...

“Aren’t they sweet?” Andy mocked as he clapped his hands together near his face and batted his eyelashes dramatically.
“We
are fucking sweet,” I bellowed arrogantly. “Our bromance is amazing. We’re like a modern-day Romeo and Romeo.”

And his time spent with the kids in the story was absolutely heart-warming, and totally hilarious!

He picked up the remote and changed the channel from the baseball game to some obnoxious cartoon with a singing yellow sponge.
I stared in disgust as the porous little bastard danced around the screen and poked his big pink friend in the gut.

And then there’s his grandma. OMG, I love her! She is a “foul-mouthed, whiskey-drinking badass who told it like it was and didn’t take crap from anyone”, and their relationship is sensational.

I looked back and forth from my glass to hers. “Why does your tea look different?”
“Because my tea is whiskey.” She grinned proudly.
“Whiskey?” I stared at it incredulously before checking the time on my phone. “It’s ten thirty in the morning.”
“Lawrence, when you’re my age, you learn to do things when you want to do them, not when it’s socially acceptable. Hell, who knows if I’ll still be around at dinner time? While we’re on the subject, I had half a tub of mint chocolate chip ice cream for dinner last night. Cheers!” She raised her glass again and winked at me.

I devoured this book in one night. Sucked in from the very first page and unable to put it down. It’s a quick read, too, but Beth Ehemann still does a great job and creating something very special.

This book is beautifully written, and I loved how the two stories combined so effortlessly. Viper’s story and the coming together of two people going through hell and finding each other was absolutely magic.

I loved it – 5 stars.

For a while at the beginning I wavered weather to keep reading or not, and in fact I almost DNFed it, but I am really glad I continued. It took a while, but after three hours into the audiobook a started to really get into the story.

I can definitely say that I wasn't expecting this kind of book when I picked up Cement Heart. I thought this was one more sport romance book, a light and superfluous story. Basically a quick read. I was wrong. I wound't even classify this book into the sport-romance category.
This book is a romance, pure and simple romance, a very emotional one and a realistic one at that.

I enjoyed it tremendously.

Alrighty, when I started this I was like, where are we going with Viper? I know he's a dog, but WOW! Right out of the shoot; three-way! LOL! I purposefully did not read the description of this book because it being about Viper is all I needed to know. I didn't even want to know the love interest's name...as I read I kept trying to figure out who it was going to be. Taylor? Darla? Portland? When tragedy struck (and let me just tell you I was about to lose it at the eulogy part), I kept trying to figure it out...the doctor? Who? Then the fog parted and I started putting it together. Michelle. I WAS NOT DOWN WITH THIS. Even though, I thought the story was so good and I was completely invested with Viper's story, I didn't like this turn. But the more they interacted. The more he became involved with Matthew, I started to warm. By the time we got to the whooshing part (which is what I'm gonna call it because in that scene where it's all laid out, I felt like I was whooshed) I was full on committed to these two. The best part is Viper's love for "Big Mike". His complete and utter love and then it just seemed to transfer to his family. He never dismisses his memory but treats it with the respect it deserves. I love that there's no hurry with Michelle and Viper. They're not married and she's not knocked up by the end of the book. Love. That. I really, really, really like this book!

if white bread & arm tats had a baby, it'd be this book

gonna keep this one short because i'm already forgetting things from this, my most forgettable read so far this year. let's get listy.

didn't like:

- lack of physical descriptions & context (literally didn't figure out this was about hockey until like waaaay too late. and didn't find out until 80% in that the h had blonde hair)

- stereotypical "nice" douche... numbers of hook ups in a kitchen drawer... seriously?

- the things tying the relationship together were survivor's guilt & "wow neither of us have parents" where is the fcking chemistry....??????

- not going to spoil it but actual basis of the relationship was not something that i could get into... i get that everyone deserves love but i really did think that everything was resolved too quickly and wasn't sexy.

did like

i did think that viper was pretty good with michelle's kids. i'm a sucker for a good step daddy-esque moment (probably because i think i'm destined to be a rich man's second wife & step mom). added some level of plausibility to the familial relationship.

also nothing particularly abhorrent happened? yay.

This book was so much more than I was expecting in all the best ways possible. Even though this is a standalone, Viper did appear in the Cranberry Inn series and from reading that, I assumed Viper's book would be a light-hearted romance about a man-whore who finds his way to love. This book was so much more than that. Yes, Viper is a man-whore. He has a bunch of one-night stands and doesn't do the whole love thing but there is so much more to him than that and as this book progresses, you really get to see the kind of man he really is. I loved Viper. My emotions were all over the place while reading this, I'm not embarrassed to say this book made me cry. It was very emotional, the writing was gorgeous and the build-up to the romance was realistic and beautiful. Obviously, I really loved this one and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a touching, sweet romance! This is a top book of 2015!

This story was a learning experience for me. An eye opener. I didn't realize just how much of a formula romances tend to follow until I read one that didn't. This story isn't so much a romance as it is Viper's journey back to life, to love. For half the book, through the series of events that transpired in the beginning of this story that completely gutted me, I kept wondering who was going to be Viper's love interest. (I should have lead with the fact that I don't read blurbs, I go in blind every time. Knowing this story was about Viper was enough for me to tear into it hungrily knowing nothing else.) Anyway, as the story unfolded, I wondered who this romance would follow... which one of the many women in Viper's life would crack his cement heart. I didn't know because for 50% of the book, this wasn't a romance. This was Lawrence Finkle's struggle. I thought that was odd at first. Typically an author will introduce the woman, the intended love interest fairly early on, guiding the reader, dropping hints to get the reader's brain prepared. That didn't happen here and I kept thinking "Beth Ehemann, what are you doing to me, lady?"

As the story unfolded I wanted to high five this author so hard. Seriously. This story evolved in the most perfect, most unexpected manner and it was so necessary and so right for everyone involved. This story didn't begin as a romance because these characters weren't ready for that. They weren't those people and anything other than the path Beth Ehemann took them on would have felt forced, artificial, wrong. This is a story about finding hope when hope is lost. Finding joy and meaningful relationships after life shatters the ground beneath your feet. Why did this story catch me so off guard? Because the romance in this story took a backseat to a man's healing and growth and self discovery and it evolved in a realistic believable way, not the fabricated, perfect way most romances do.

The chemistry between Viper and his love interest is a lot different than that of Kacie and Brody. It's almost impossible to even compare the two storylines because they're so very different. While Kacie and Brody's love story was lighter and sweeter and more obvious, Viper's romance is much more subtle, more emotional, more intense, more unpredictable. Their chemistry exists (eventually), but it's a much slower journey for these two.

There was a period of time in this book where I actually felt the connection between Viper and 'her' wasn't as deep as it had been between Kacie and Brody, not as deep as it "should have felt." I felt their chemistry was not quite as obvious as it had been between the other couple and I saw that as a flaw in the story. I expected to feel the same deep attraction I had felt in the other books and it wasn't until I finished Cement Heart that I realized how WRONG I WAS.... how absolutely right everything about this relationship truly is. What made me an instant fan of this author was that she consistently crafts authentic, believable relationships between her characters and what she did with Viper's was precisely that. Considering the timeline of events in this story, considering the characters themselves and everything that lead them to this point, the level of commitment and attraction between them when this book ended was spot on. Had Ehemann done what most romance authors do, force-feeding the reader a sudden insta-love relationship where everything is flowery and fluffy and sugary sweet would have felt so contrived, so artificial, so inconsistent with everything that lead up to that point. Instead, what this author did with her characters was pure and beautiful and honest and respectful. What she did, yet again, was brilliant.

With Cement Heart, Beth Ehemann has proven, once again, that she's a naturally gifted story-teller. Viper's story is one of reluctant self-reflection and moving forward despite tremendous guilt and regret. I was blown away by the characters, the story and ultimately the message of this marvelous book. I recommend it highly!

God, I loved this book. I really, really loved it. ♡

I am the biggest fan of Beth Ehemann's writing style. She has this impeccable sense for pacing, timing and detail, this talent to put thoughts and feelings into words, that she's already shown off in her previous novels. Her writing seems so simple and effortless, in the best of ways, yet it manages to suck you in so easily and stir that powerful vortex of emotions inside you.

There is so much I want to say about this story, but I'm going to restrain myself. The author did the right thing, keeping the blurb vague - as a reader, you'll really want to go into the book as blindly as possible, so I'm not going to elaborate on the plot either.
Let me just say this: the blurb and my memories of Viper as a side character in the Cranberry Inn series made me expect one of those 'tame the man-whore' stories - light, fun, sexy. But it turned out to be so much more than that. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me swoon. Sometimes all of them simultaneously.
Right there, sitting on the couch in her living room, my cement heart broke into a million tiny pieces.

But be warned: Cement Heart is the epitome of a slow-burn romance.
You need insta-love/lust? You need lots of sex in your book? You need a possessive, overbearing alpha hero? Then you might want to take a pass on this one.

But, if you're content with a beautiful, heart-wrenching story about friendship, love and self-discovery, are into foul-mouthed but golden hearted heroes who don't take themselves too seriously, and just want to feel the whole range of emotions, you should definitely give it a try.

Although Cement Heart is a spin-off from the Cranberry Inn series (Room for You), this novel can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend reading those other books, though, since Brody, Kacie and lots of the characters we've already been introduced to have major roles in this one, too. And, of course, they are just as amazing.
Impatiently waiting for Andy's story now!

I have been excited to read about VIPER since Room for More. I loved his no-nonsense attitude, his fiery spirit and sense of humor.  I was excited to get his story, in fact, I dropped everything to read it.  Beth Ehemann gave us a different Viper.  She took this in a direction I did not expect.  This was a rather serious and at times, a depressing story.  Viper has hidden behind his humor and manwhoring the majority of his life.  He has made it far in life because he fought to never be bullied, to go after what he wanted and never fall victim.  He is faced with a tragedy that rocked his world.  It changed his path in life and made him reevaluate everything about himself.  He was drowning in guilt and self-destructive behaviors.  Because of his coach and the heads of his hockey team, he was forced to see a sports psychologist.  We see his journey to self-discover and change.  But, I think it was the promise to his friend that saved his life.  Had it not been that promise, I think he would have continued to be a wandering soul.

In the end, I am glad Viper found his HEA, despite the circumstances that took him there.  There was some trademark Viper humor in the book, and I found those moments my favorite.
"Ya know, can I charm the snake?  Unclog the drain? Slap the sausage?"

I'm not the biggest fan of tear-you-apart-then-piece-you-back-together-again reads mainly because I don't enjoy feeling miserable for too long when I escape into a book, but also because the ugly crying makes my contact lenses go all smeary. And nobody wants smeary contact lenses do they?

I can't say too much about the plot without including massive spoilers so this is going to sound a bit vague. It's about a hockey player (second one this week, yay!) who, at the beginning of the story, is a total man whore, finding temporary peace in every mindless lay. Yup, we've all read plenty of those, so nothing very new there. During the course of the story he's forced to re-evaluate everything about his lifestyle, his values, his morals and his responsibilities. I cannot lie, the trigger for his metamorphosis is brutal. For me, (wussy reader) it bordered on unreadable. Nothing to do with the writing or execution, just that my reading preferences were shot to bits.

So, in spite of that, I liked it (I know!!) but I didn't love it for a couple of reasons. Firstly his love interest didn't show up until 60%. I love a long, drawn out flirtation, with sizzling chemistry and warm your cockles banter. Yes, there was some in this book, but late, very late on.

Secondly the sodding therapy. Sigh. I get the guy needed help to get over his trauma (who wouldn't) but I'm afraid that reading about therapy sessions bores me to tears. And there was mucho therapy in this. Detailed conversations with the therapist in which he talks about his various issues and she helps him to find his centre again after a couple of chats...just, no, not for me.

If you enjoy a tear jerker and love the therapy stuff, this will be right up your street because this was a solid and engaging read, but I need more romance earlier on to really fall for a story.

This is part of a series, but I read it as a standalone and it all made sense.

I was looking forward to this one. Where was the story? I didn't like it. At all.

For me the multiple sex partners wasn't the issue. It just didn't seem well developed. Just stuff against a wall rather than a real story. I was pretty clued in when we have friends meeting at a bar and talking with no real purpose of explanation for the conversation.

I tried another by this author some time ago and it didn't jive for me either. I'm thinking I'm just not a fan of the writing style. No worries. I'll remember and won't go there again.

Hope you have a better experience with this than I did.

Happy Reading!

Lawrence "Viper" Finkle lives by a set of rules along with a drawer full of phone numbers:

Rule #1 - Always wear a condom.

Rule #2 - Never go down on a one night stand.

Rule #3 - If he brought them back to his place, as opposed to his car, an alley, or the bathroom, he didn't have sex in his bedroom. Always the guest room.

And he lived his life with these set of rules and a few others, but that all changed when he lost someone due in part by his actions. Viper was lost, depressed and lonely. Brody noticed as well as the head honchos of the team. They gave him an ultimatum, either he sought help from a therapist or risk being cut from the team.

When Viper met Dr. Shawn Roberts, he thought he could charm his way out of a good report from her, but was soon dispelled of that myth. When she starts asking questions that make him think, he changes his life by thinking of others. Helping a family who's loss was just as great if not greater than his own.

It takes no time for his ways to change and for Viper to realize his feelings have change in how he interacts with those close to him.

I really enjoyed this book. Viper had some of the best one liner, whether they were said by him or something he thought, which could send me into hysterical laughter. Then there were moment which brought me to tears. Sad things happen and lovely thing happen. But they author said it best in this story... Life is too short to worry about what others thing and what my seem conventional. Go for what you want and love who you love.

It's a beautiful thought. Great story!

This is not the story I expected, not even one bit, but I've loved it nonetheless.
Viper was painted,in the previous books,as a hardened playboy who didn't believe in love and commitment but in this one he changes his mind little by little thanks to a beautiful woman and an "external" help.
Even if this is a stand alone I invite you to read the other books in the Cranberry Inn series because they are beautiful.

"We grow up,become adults, and get married. From the moment the ring is on our finger,we have these grand ideas in our heads of how our life is supposed to go forever-how things should end up-but it's not really up to us,is it?I don't know who it's up to,but we just have to go with it.We have to keep riding the waves of life, trying not to get sucked too far out and get lost at sea,ya know?"

**Re-read in 2016 in preparation for the sequel!**

I admit to going into this book without reading the book cover. I’ve read the Cranberry Inn series and was introduced to Viper then.

What I expected - A typical story about a manwhore who changes his way after he meets the right woman.

What I got - Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that this story went in a direction I couldn’t have predicted. It was emotional, gut wrenching and a page turner. I got so emotionally involved in Viper’s story and couldn’t put it down.

So not the story I was expecting, but in a great way! This book was a pleasant surprise.

I guess I'm in the minority on this one because I found it to be just an ok read. The hero was a total manwhore. I also just didn't like how this plot played out. It didn't feel realistic and it never really had any spark for me. The story and characters just felt fictitious and flat. Not one I'd personally recommend.

The only character I genuinely enjoyed was the grandmother. All the others just felt fake.

-- AUDIO REVIEW --

I really wasn’t sure what to make of this cook at first. It got off with a bang (um, literally) and was not at all what I expected. But having just listened to the last line, I can appreciate that for what it was: a full picture into Viper’s life which ultimately made his character arc so much more meaningful.

There are some pretty intense emotional punches in this story. They’re layered between these delicate moments of lightness and humor and the end result felt richly rewarding. I wasn’t always comfortable with the story, but I loved it nonetheless.

In all? Absolutely worth the listen. The narration was great and the storyline was compelling, heartbreaking and then heartwarming and so so satisfying. Loved it! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars
