Not your typical epic fantasy at all -- which I highly prefer, since I'm bored to tears with that. The shifts in tone might catch some people off balance -- it can be downright silly one moment and deadly serious the next, regal and medieval one moment and full of anachronistic terms the next -- but I rode with it pretty well. One odd habit the author has is to skip over large chunks of time ["...four years later..." "...twenty years later..."] in the service of the story. The problem is, you then have to assume that nothing of consequence happened during that time period -- which is hard to believe, given some of the weighty stuff going on and all the nefarious planning of the villains. And *minor spoiler!* I was disappointed that this in fact turned out to end in a cliff-hanger. But overall, it's a fun read and I'd recommend it. My one real complaint? I wanted more dragons!
