Comment:
It is Freud on culture that is of lasting interest. I believe it was Ricoeur (or was it Merleau-Ponty?) who said 'the reason great men study sex and economics is that these [i.e., sex, economics] are the visible record of our own inertia.' ...Freud on culture is fascinating, in that it exposes the tendencies (inertia) of the vast majority of people. I believe that this is why psychoanalysis will be remembered; not for what it says regarding individuals, but what it says about groups.
