זאב וחיה עוזבים את הקיבוץ ומגיעים לירושלים. חיה היתה אהובתו של דב שעזב את הקיבוץ ללמוד מתמטיקה באוניברסיטה. עם עזיבתם, עת הם מגיעים לירושלים הם מבקשים מדב לשמור על יאלי בנם לשלשה ימים על מנת שיוכלו ללמוד למבחן.
דב מסכים.

הוא לא צופה שהם יעירו אותו השכם בבוקר יביאו אליו את הילד שיש סימן שאלה אם הוא בריא. הוא לא צופה את קושי והזכרונות מהקיבוץ.

הוא לוקח את הילד לבית קברות ושם משחק איתו מחבואים. כשמגיע תורו להתחבא לילד הוא מתחבא היטב ולא יוצא אלא לאחר 10 דקות בהן הילד מתחנן שיצא ומחפש אותו וקורא לו 'חבר', שם אירוני למי שאינו חבר שלו.

הילד שמגיע חולה אל דב, הופך חולה יותר. הוא מאושפז בבית חולים. ההורים שעסוקים בלימוד לקראת מבחנים לא טורחים להיות מעורבים וכשהילד מאושפז, האב מאשים את דב שלא ידע אותם. היחס של ההורים לילד מטריד וסוריאליסטי. לא ברורה הנטישה הזו.

מדובר בנובלה קשה, לא נעימה. מערכות היחסים בה בעייתיות החל ממערכת היחסים של ההורים עם הילד, עבור במערכת יחסים בין דב והילד, וכלה במערכת היחסים של דב עם יעל שותפתו לדירה שהיא גם בת זוגו לעת מצוא.

בשלושה ימים דב מתמודד עם קשיים ומורכבויות: מחלה, נחשים, קוצים, הילד איתו יש לו יחסי שינאה אהבה, זכרונות מהקיבוץ ומאהבתו לחיה.

אין קתרזיס בנובלה הקשה הזו.

The few Israeli writers I have read (Amos Oz, S.Y. Agnon, and here A.B. Yehoshua) all seem to really love the use of symbolism. I liked it here, however at times it started being a little too like S.Y. Agnon in that Yehoshua seemed to be attempting to use symbolism to pad out a story that at times lacked appropriate depth and range. A very good if somewhat vague story.

Edgy and taut little novella that utilizes a dazzling system of symbolism as the aesthetic candy atop a caustic narrative of a man tasked with protecting a child he does not want to protect for his ex-girlfriend. Spanning three days in sweltering Jerusalem summer. Fantastic read.

5 stories, with interestingly flawed narrators. I wish the year each story was written was included, to add the historical reference point.

Con un discorso indiretto libero che ricorda l'Ellis di Meno di Zero, Yehoshua disegna tre giornate di un Ze'ev in compagnia di un bambino estraneo, figlio del suo amore non ricambiato.
Il racconto prosegue con semplicità e momenti quotidiani banali, in grado di coinvolgere proprio grazie allo stile totalmente interiorizzato dentro il protagonista. Bello l'utilizzo dei sogni e la descrizione di una Gerusalemme deserta e magniloquente, metafora di un amore non ricambiato.
In 90 pagine il racconto non pretende di lasciare messaggi particolari, ma ci mostra una possibile situazione e quello che rappresenta per l'emotività di una persona razionale come un matematico. E alla fine arriva potente e realistico il rapporto fra i due, proprio perché non intessuto di scene madri o momenti strappalacrime.
Il cinema minimalista di Kiarostami deve qualcosa a quest'autore.
