This could have been a really fun, informative read but it's a bit tedious here and there. And a few pictures/illustrations would have made a lot of difference. Just chunks of information is not enough I feel.

Týchto 30 príbehov si vychutná každý milovník zvierat a vlastne hocikto, koho zaujíma svet okolo nás.

The book was great and informational, I learned about the different animals and how their cool features have helped us develop machines that help us solve the many problems in our life. It was cool to learn about them, the author’s style of writing was quite conversational. which made me feel more connected to the author and text.

The one bad thing about this book was that it was getting quite boring at the end, the inventions were great. But, some were really not exactly making any difference to the world. Like, certain robots were mentioned, yet they never are said to have a purpose or why making that was important to a certain cause. The book could have been shorter, more concise. Maybe, certain animals could have been left out while others would be kept. And, I found a few punctuation errors, that was also a downside for me.

Based on his hit BBC Podcast of the same name (and just as fun), Patrick takes on an insightful journey that will absolutely delight your inner child as well as your inner geek while challenging you to think about just how connected EVERYTHING on this planet is - from the engineering of the bullet train right down to the beautiful Kingfisher!

Obviously, I flicked straight to the part about my beloved elephants but this is a book I would absolutely recommend, not just to learn from but for genuine #readingforfun. Don't forget, the podcast is also available on most streaming platforms; I'm patiently waiting for the next season

The short chapters that introduce the animal, the feature/body part/item that humans have tried to use and redevelop into a helpful piece for our existence, and how it was applied makes it a breezy read without overcomplicated scientific explanation- simply straightforward however I was surprised that there was no backmatter in the paperback version though it seems like (from the cover) it's inspired by a BBC podcast, so is that the reason? I'm unsure.

Either way, there were diagrams when it might have been necessary to share some visuals. And as mentioned, the basic delivery of the 30 animals/30 items that helped improve something whether it was insulation, building buildings like termites build their mounds to disperse cool and heat, bionic arms like elephant trunks or building helmets and safety equipment inspired by hedgehogs and woodpeckers, I was bolstered by both science and the animal kingdom in appreciation.

The book has some interesting information but I got so bored of reading the life memories of the author. In every chapter the author tells events from his life for 4 to 5 pages! “When I was little and went to the beach with my grandmother and my grandmother went to speak to the other grandmothers and I went to play with the other children” I have no interest to read about these things! I took the book to read about animals not about the life of the author!

The disadvantages of the book is that it’s unnecessarily long, it could have been a lot shorter, and I also felt that each chapter was repetitive on the same idea. The concept of the book is how humans saw animals in nature and learned from them how to come up with inventions and innovations. But it felt like some examples in the book were not logical and were just mentioned to increase the number of the chapters.

The subject matter here is fascinating. Before reading this book, I could only have named you maybe four examples of biomimicry—despite being interested in the subject. So this book took me by surprise.

I found the writing a touch on the dry side when it was talking about the actual science of it. I think most of that, however, was because of me. When the author got down to the nitty gritty, I often couldn't quite visualize what he was writing about because I don't have enough science background or mechanical inclination/interest. So…Mr. Aryee, it's me, not you. I just wish there had been more photos/illustrations.

I'm in awe of the research involved in this book and in even more in awe of nature and our attempts to understand and copy it.

It's an interesting book, especially if you read it slowly—no more than a couple of chapters at a time.

Fascinating book, if occasionally a little shallow. Mostly a transcription of the podcast of the same name, which might have lead to the weirdly truncated chapters. What works in audio doesn't always translate 1 to 1 in text. Might have done with using the text format to expand a bit. The illustrations are a nice addition, but also leave the reader still hungry, as it were.

Patrick has a terrific way of explaining the scientific and engineering side of things in a simple, fun and sometimes humorous way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and so will any fellow animal and science lovers. It’s incredible what our natural world teaches us and practically every invention we have is based on the incredible creatures around us.

There's a fair amount of interesting information in here, but the author's chatty style, while perhaps appropriate for a podcast or an after-dinner talk, is putting me off. Too many useless make-friendly phrases. "Now, I know we're not off to a flying start on this one...." Right you are.

Interesting and well written! There is also a podcast. It is remarkable that people have learned from nature. For my part, I often see people incapable of learning from nature. It gives me hope.

Lovely, well-written and humorous book by Patrick Aryee that reminds you of the magnificence of nature and how so many innovations by humans have been inspired by the animal kingdom.

A lot of interesting facts, although the (at times) colloquial writing annoyed me. Could have been a 4-star book, but the editing was so bad.

Reading along with each corresponding podcast episode.
Very interesting and informative content. I'm learning a lot of new things. The book is about how various animals features have inspired humans to copy various features to improve technology and machinery.
He mentions the scientists and/or professors who have researched and developed various technologies based upon studying animals. He also mentions companies that are using that new technology.
It could have used actual photographs, and more drawings to illustrate the concepts discussed. Some of the science concepts were very complex and a bit hard to understand fully.
It should have had measurements in both metric and feet/inches/miles/pounds/F°. I had to stop reading to convert it to the system I use.

Some interesting animals-
1. Bombardier beetle 🪲- shoots out a spray of liquid mist that is boiling hot. I never heard of this bug. There was an interesting story about Charles Darwin holding a beetle in his mouth and getting sprayed. Also Darwin apparently enjoyed trying eating exotic new animals. Scientists are trying to use this technology to create better more efficient gas engines that conserve energy and use less gas.
2. Polar bear- has 2 layers of fur, short and long. The long fur has hollow chambers which hold in heat.
3. Soft robotics based upon the elephant's trunk.
4. "Crocodile" ice fish- have no hemoglobin in their blood, also don't freeze in freezing cold water because they have "antifreeze"- scientists are mimicking this.
5. Arapaima fish scales with "Bouligand-type structure" among the toughest and most flexible biological materials, being used to make a new type of body armor to stop all bullets and other weapons. Also being used in aerospace design, and in submarines to "help them hide, because this material has the ability to absorb energy given off by the craft, making it undetectable by sonar." Pg. 234
6. Lobster eye telescope and optics are based on the structure of a lobsters eye.
7. Spiders webs have inspired scientists to create synthetic silk to deliver antibiotics and use as a wound dressing. Also the UV reflective property used on windows to stop birds from flying into windows.

Since this was published over 3 years ago, updates on the various projects would be nice.

A bit tedious to read because of the breadth of examples but interesting nonetheless. Would recommend to someone looking for a broad overview of how animals influence and inspire designs rather than someone interested in a deeper dive on the topic.

Very informative book - with a touch of humor thrown in. It's amazing how animals, some of which I had never heard of, inspire us humans to come up with better solutions for our world
