Re-read 2020: A cute short story collection featuring various characters from the Sailor Moon universe.

I decided it was high time to re-read these short stories volumes. I was eager to get to reading and go back to the Sailor Moon universe. I knew that I may not enjoy it fully as I remember + read my old review that the books have a hefty dose of characters I wasn't a fan of.

And that is true. The first one features a lot of Chibi-Usa, who is one of the most annoying, frustrating and cringy character of the SM universe. The second short story volume features Luna, the second one on my list of annoying characters. Don't get me wrong, I loved the stories in the end, but I was a bit frustrated that these two characters got so much attention while others get less. I would have loved to see a Mamo story, or some romantic dates between Mamo and Usagi.

But still I had fun reading these stories and see what the girls are up to. See strange and mysterious things happening in the city they live. Yep, the big bosses and enemies may not be around but aliens still love to go to earth and have a bit of fun with the humans there (or you know, suck out their souls). The girls still have to do all they can to save the world. And that in between studying (because in one of these volumes the girls are on their way to high school in Japan that means you have to study or not get anywhere which I still think is a tad silly), meeting new friends (as Chibi-Usa goes to school for the first time), and more. It was a delight and I definitely loved the story of Ami falling in love with someone, yes, she calls it being better than someone but we all know what is going on there. It was kind of cute to see strict and studious Ami fall in love.
I did think the story about the girls' children was a bit odd given how much ALIKE they were to their parents, it was just so boring and I would rather have seen a bit more mix-up.

I loved the various enemies that popped up and which girls fought against them. Sometimes it was just a duo, sometimes all of them, sometimes just Chibi-Usa. It made the fights even more fun and interesting.

I still think it is funny everyone knows Sailor V but barely anyone knows Sailor Moon. Poor Usagi.

The art is, as always, just so pretty! I love how the girls are drawn and I love that as times goes on you do see the girls grow up.

I would definitely recommend this two volume short stories series.

Read: 2013: This was a wonderful book, it was full with stories about every character! Ok except Mamo (I so wish for a story about him).

Really recommend this book to the sailor moon fans! Since the manga is now over, you can still read about your favourite sailor girl.

I think I get why Kodansha decided to publish all of the Sailor Moon shorts together in two volumes, instead of scattered through the main story as they'd originally been. But it certainly doesn't do them any favors. Reading an entire volume of nothing but side stories is draining. By the last story, I was sick of them. All I can say is to avoid reading the entire volume in one go.

A collection of seven off-the-wall and funny short stories of 'Sailor Moon' - none of which are actually about Sailor Moon herself, but her Guardian friends.

First off there's 'Chibi-Usa's Picture Diary: Beware the Transfer Student' - About Chibiusa's first days at school, her classmates, and vampires. Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus are idols for Chibiusa as well as for the rest of the kids. They show up to defeat a vampire in a few panels. Cute art, standard story for little-uns, and BTW, I didn't know vampires liked flowers.

The second story is called, 'Chibi-Usa's Picture Diary: Beware of Tanabata', revolving around the Chinese legend of Tanabata: of Shokujo and Kengyu. Haruka and Michiru make a cute cameo appearance, Mamoru is an idiot, the cats’ roles diminish as time goes on, and there's straw feminism mixed with stereotyped assumptions about men as well. Plus, like with the 'Codename: Sailor V' manga, there's the implication that only young, slim, pretty girls can be happy because they'll have handsome men in their lives. I wouldn't call this a subversion or deconstruction of an old legend when it sorely relies on gender stereotypes to get its point across.

Third is 'Chibi-Usa's Picture Diary: Beware of Cavities' - A typical monster-of-the-week story about fearing dentists. Add in a rather weak healthy-eating message and the job’s done; no insight to be found here. At least Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus share in a battle again with Chibiusa (thank heaven this is her last "Picture Diary" entry - she's had enough of the spotlight). And wow these stories are excessively boisterous! I'd even call the artwork for the comedy scenes an eyesore.

Now onto the 'Exam Battle Stories' - exactly what it says on the tin. The Inner Sailor Guardians are at their high school entrance examination period. Ridiculous evil spirits to fight come and go, too. In 'The Melancholy of Mako-Chan', we learn more about everyone's favourite vigorous and feminine "big sister" Guardian, Makoto Kino /Sailor Jupiter, as she procrastinates studying to go bargain-hunting for pretty things, to cook, clean, and drink tea during the girls' study groups.

'Ami-Chan's First Love' - Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury studies hard nearly all the time, and contrary to her usual kind nature, where exams are concerned she is tough on her friends to study as well. She can understand and solve any and every problem. Except for love letters, which make her break out in hives. In this story, she obsessively competes against a rival who keeps getting the same perfect score as her in mock exam results, to the point where she might be falling in love - with someone she only knows by pen name. Of course Ami's ideal man would be Albert Einstein, and with so much emphasis on her being extremely intelligent (300 IQ!), why would she choose her own exam board pen name to be "Mercury"? Isn't that a dead giveaway of her secret identity? Like if Clark Kent were to submit a story to the Daily Planet under the name, “Supes”? Or if Bruce Wayne ran a business called, “Bat Management”? But aside from that, this is a great Ami-centered story. She is drawn with such an array of expressions it's both funny and charming, and boy is she competitive! My favourite line, from Minako, is, ""Rival equals enemy," eh? I think I'll stop trying to improve my grades, then, since I don't wanna get killed by Ami-Chan!" Umino appears! Even Usagi remarks that she forgot about his existence in the past year!

'Rei's and Minako's Girls School Battle?' - An instant favourite if you're a Rei/Minako fan and consider the pairing to be canon, or you think it should be (They always look the perfect match when drawn together). We delve into the hyperactive, boy-crazy, superficial mind of one Minako Aino/Sailor Venus, and what she thinks of each of her friends, including her exact opposite, Rei Hino/Sailor Mars. Despite being jealous of Rei, Minako does admire her more "refined" friend. This could be interpreted as their own special love story - about a love-hate relationship between two teenage girls growing up into high school age, with new, wider experiences ahead of them.

The seventh - and fortunately the last - story is, 'Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Side Story: The Secret Hammer Price Hall'. It is full of valley girl speak. Oh joy. I hate this sexist stereotype, its overuse in the media in the 1990s-early 2000s, and how it typically has vapid Barbie clones effortlessly butcher the English language merely by opening their mouths. In this case it’s most bizarre because the two valley girls are meant to be speaking Japanese (They are called Ganguro girls here: Culture sharing? Approbation?) My eye twitches just reading the horrendous dialogue, even if it is parody (and I don't blame the translator for the interpretation). One other thing; I do not care about brands, and I never have. Why would Chibiusa be friends with such airheads in the first place? At least Hotaru Tomoe is at hand in her part as the straight man - she is my hero in this. While there are some genuinely funny moments - "Chubster Mask" made me laugh out loud, and the self-aware Sailor Moon laments her lack of presence in these stories, despite being the main character - it is obnoxious and messy overall. There’s too many grown men fetishizing young girls, and apparently 'Sailor Moon' is a franchise in its own universe, with its own cosplay, manga and anime. Whatever, clearly it's not meant to be taken seriously, just like the other stories. And whenever an enemy shows up, why do the Sailor Guardians keep transforming from their civilian identities in public, in front of everyone?

Another thing, isn't the cover of this volume the cutest, most precious thing ever? Takeuchi-san's art continues to amaze me.

My final 'Sailor Moon' manga review is coming up: with the second short stories volume, containing, in my opinion, much better and more sophisticated storytelling; the best the franchise has to offer.

Final Score: 3.5/5

Well, this was absolutely horrible. I cannot believe that the intended age group is teenaged girls. On top of that, I cannot believe that I read and watched sailor moon as a 14 year old. No wonder I was so fatphobic and had a kind of fetish of being with older guys, plus my eating disorders. I'm not blaming it all on sailor moon, I'm just saying sailor moon was part of the problem and did not help solve it.

Number 1, the fatphobia and issues with body image, and encouraging eating disorders:

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/2922414...#

Number 2, the pedophilia:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/2922414...#

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/2922414...#

In these two images, the characters are grade school girls and yet Naoko Takeuchi has no problem with sexualizing them. In one of the images, they transform and say that they are grade school cosplayers. It can be seen that a man has blood coming out of his nose, as a response to this. In anime and manga that means the man is having an erection. This is disgusting. And in the other, the girls' panties are showing and tuxedo mask, a roughly 18 year old man dating a 14 year old girl, is looking at their panties. This is absolutely revolting. I just can't.

I know I have already said this but I can't say it enough. Naoko Takeuchi apparently has some sort of pedophilic fetish. Mamoro is 18 who dates Usagi, 14. Helios (pegasus) is obviously a grown man, dating chibi-usa (I don't care if she is 902 years old it is clear that she has never matured and that is why she looks and acts like a 6 year old).

I'm utterly disgusted and will not continue with the short stories series.

Namun, setelah membacanya ulang, kurasa oke-oke aja. So unyu.

No but seriously, what. Was that. (This is mostly my feeling after the final story, because WHAT.)

Let's start this review saying it's probably not a good idea to read this in one go after finishing the main series. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just a completely different tone from the ending. This is super cheerful and upbeat, which is pretty contrasting. I have the feeling you're meant to read some of them after you finished one of the main volumes as a kind of breather episode. That might be a better reading experience, anyway. (Wasn't that sort of how they were published in the first place?)

Okay, onto the general reviews! I'll just throw them into separate categories: Chibi-Usa's picture diaries, the inner senshi stories, and the final one.

Chibi-Usa picture diary
I actually thought these were delightfully silly, and more childlike compared to the rest of the series (which makes sense, seeing as how they star Chibi-Usa, who may be much older than she looks but is still very much a child). Vampires! Tanabata festival! CAVITIES! (The last one is a bad one to read if you're already having trouble with your teeth, I can tell you that.) I really enjoyed them once I got into their mood. And I loved how I read the Tanabata one at July 8. Only one day late!

The inner senshi
Wow, Ami. I think the only thing I got from this is 'AMI SURELY LOVES STUDYING', geesh. There were a lot of school-related words in these stories, and mostly all of them came from Ami and then the rest complaining about it. It was nice to see more of Makoto and Ami in particular, though, even if Ami's story didn't really add much to her character in my opinion. My favourite story was Minako and Rei's - I loved seeing more about their unexpected friendship and seeing more sides of them. (Oh, Mina, never change. Your head is a wonderful place.)

The Secret Hammer Price Hall
I seriously don't know what to make of this one. It was... well, annoying. Man, I hated Ruruna and Naruru, if only because of their freaking annoying speaking habits and all the random arrows in their speech. And just their extremeness in general. I was basically Hotaru this whole chapter. She mostly had this expression on her face: "-_-" Oh my god just shut up you two. (Also, Mamoru, I hope you know you got a nosebleed over the younger sister of your girlfriend's classmate. She can't be much older than 13.) So ehm, thank god for Hotaru in this otherwise pretty weird chapter. I think I missed a couple of things because I got too tired to look up all the slang Ruruna and Naruru use, oops.

Overall, it's a fun addition to the series, as long as you're in the mood for it. The last story in particular made me raise my eyebrows a lot, but alright, still five stars, because it's Sailor Moon and this not being my favourite doesn't mean it's bad all of a sudden.
(Also, I'm biased because of the pretty cover and the stickers. And that cover of Rei and Minako is lovely. I AM OBVIOUSLY VERY GOOD AT GIVING OBJECTIVE REVIEWS.)

Sailor Moon Short stories volume 1 is rated Teen so use your best judgment when giving this book to younger readers. It is also a series of short stories so reviewing it in any great amount of detail could be paramount to more spoiling then I am comfortable with so I am just going to say this collection of stories is cute sharing a little extra outside of the normal circumstances of the ongoing Sailor Moon story (kinda like filler episodes in anime) but all contained in one of two books. Personally I find it funny how there are so many random evil spirits in the world without direction of one major baddie. It is a good thing the Sailor Senshi are here to save the day. :)

In this volume the stories are split into three parts starting with "Chibi-Usa's Picture Diary" which breaks up into 3 parts itself dealing with the mystery of students in Chibi-Usa's class are disappearing, a chapter about Tanabata, and finally a chapter about going to the dentist. In the 2nd part "Exam Battle Stories" we get three more chapters with the first dealing with Makoto dealing the Melancholy of trying to study so she can get into high school, then we get to see Ami has an admirer and her heart goes pitter patter just as her competitive spirit kicks in, finally the in the third chapter of the second part ends with Rei letting Minako sneak into her school to let her experience what it is like. Finally in the last part we get to see a popular Pawn Shop that sells trendy things and we get to meet two more of Chibi-Usa's friends(though they seem a bit older then Hotaru and herself) who are both tanned and speak in a typical Valley Girl style. Trouble is brewing for the shop owner as debt collectors come with force and accidentally unless another Genius Loci(like i mentioned earlier there are a lot of independent spirits in the city) and only Chibi Moon and Sailor Moon can save the day.

Given a choice of all the short stories I think if I was to choose a favorite moment it might have to be when Makoto was considering giving up going to High School because her ability to study was really bad and Ami brutally tells her she was simply suffering from escapism (as a meteor of bluntness strikes Makoto stunning her) and Ami insists they all continue while Usagi and Rei check to see if Makoto is still alive. :)

Anyone who knows me knows I love Sailor Moon, but these shorts are the worst. Reading them all together was like being slowly poisoned. Fat jokes... so many fat jokes! And just bad storytelling, out of context villains, dubious messages (more so than usual, even for Sailor Moon). I'd say skip it unless you're a resilient completionist, but I'd also say maybe read one per volume of manga so you're not overwhelmed by how stinky these are.

Seeing Sailor Moon as a girl power figure for so many years, then reading a short in here that literally paints feminists (a very stereotyped, ignorant, "man-hater" version of feminists) as the villain, and my soul just died a little bit T_T.... still much love for the series tho, and the art...it is what it is.

Seru. Sayang nomor 2-nya keabisan~ -,-

Some short stories of the Sailor Guardians, focus in the different Sailors as Chibi-Usa, Amy, Rei, Mina y Amo-chan, fighting the bad forces that break their dreams and illusions.

Good stories that complement the main story.

Although I would really prefer seeing these short stories animated, this first volume of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon short stories was mostly entertaining. I feel like there's a missing spark seeing this on paper rather than on a screen, but Naoko Takeuchi brings some great personal moments with our Inner Senshi and others that shows they're more than just background while Usagi gets the spotlight.

"Chibi-Usa's Picture Diary" wasn't as funny as I was expecting, but it was a refreshing change of pace to have her be our main protagonist (the cavity story was my favorite out of the three chapters). With the exam stories, Minako and Rei's was absolutely hysterical in that we get to see Minako call Rei 'wench' repeatedly (ouch) and actually see some genuine jealousy on Minako's side towards the sassy shrine maiden. It also gave much more padding to Rei's character and showed a real genuine connection/friendship between them. Plus, Minako is just a fantastic and bubbly narrator who once in the story asked Rei if she farted while meditating (that sounds like something Grace Helbig would say). I really enjoyed her voice.

The last short story is one with Chibi-Usa again as main narrator and Hotaru providing back-up as they dealt with crazy grade-school students with valley girl speak named Naruru and Ruruna. It was an absolute blast that held a pawn shop, a kind manager who embroidered cosplay and other clothes, and the crazy girls attempting to defeat our villain. It was the right amount of ridiculous and crazy that would make an absolutely wonderful OVA or episode if the staff of Sailor Moon Crystal decided to go back and adapt the material.

Overall, a fun if expected collection of stories that put a smile on my face and yet had me yearning to see it all play out in real life. It's still the Sailor Moon pick-me-up I needed, but I can't help but think this would look better in movement rather than flipping through pages.

Ehh this was pretty disappointing and also quite disturbing. I’ve been a fan of Sailor Moon for a while - she’s fun, silly, yet powerful, and the art of the show is beautiful and sparkly and tailored for little girls who grew up obsessed with stickers (me). I had never read any of the manga though and now I think I was better off that way. I’m sure some of the disconnect is from the language and cultural disparities but I had a lot of problems with this. First of all the stories are pretty formulaic with jolted, cluttered dialogue that doesn’t make a lot of sense plot-wise. Secondly (and most worryingly), all of the stories are about these middle school students trying to work toward getting a man with a well-paying job so they can have good, secure futures. This includes constantly making sure they don’t eat too many sweets so they don’t get too chubby (what man will want a fat girl?), being a competent homemaker and cook, and occasionally doing schoolwork in case the marriage thing doesn’t work out. I shit you not, every story had some version of “hi I’m 15, I wonder if he’d be good marriage material, oh no you saw my panties! *blush*” All of the male crushes were like 18 to middle aged so it was pretty gross. Other than that, I still love the art, but I’ll be cringing a little the next time I watch an episode of Sailor Moon.

cute! these are super light weight but in a fun way. i'm going to borrow some fanfiction terminology here and say these are all fluff fic. there's a bit more traditional gender role stuff then i typically see in sailor moon -- one of the villains is basically caricature feminism with a rallying cry of 'who needs men! women: let's get careers and be independant!' and i was nodding along like well, she has a point tho when chibi-usa makes a valiant stance for the importance of the male species: 'without men, there won't be offspring. women can't live on their own!'

...in retropect that is actually a hilariously half-hearted defence. are men not good for anything else chibi-usa? xD

in general i liked the exam side-stories more then i did the chibi-usa shorts; the inner senshi are my favourite and it's nice getting some time devoted to them. also takeuchi flies her minako/rei banner high in their story and i'm always here for that :D

I enjoyed these short stories, however, I prefer the original series to these. However, these two collections are a good companion to the original manga. My favorite story out of this volume was the Dentist one because I have to admit I would be Chibi-Usa and Usagi going to the dentist lol. I found that rather charming as well as the other stories. :)

I LOVE Sailor Moon, but this book is just awful. Horribly written with terrible messages, I couldn’t stomach reading more than 3. From fat jokes to evil dentists, this book has very little substance. I’m not even sure I’d let my daughter read it.
