Huston lived in Calgary until age fifteen, at which time her family moved to Wilton, New Hampshire, USA. She studied at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, where she was given the opportunity to spend a year of her studies in Paris. Arriving in Paris in 1973, Huston obtained a Master's Degree from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, writing a thesis on swear words under the supervision of Roland Barthes.

Une histoire tendre et polypphonique sur une petite fille, pianiste prodige, d'un charactère envoûtant et généreux, et les diverses personnes qui l'entourent et qu'elle aime. C'est magnifique!

This book was intense… especially reading it in French. The evolution of the mother daughter relationship between Lara and Maya in tandem with their relationships with the piano was very well done. I appreciated how the idea of being a “prodigy” was explored from many angles, and how the idea of achieving your dreams was approached as both a source of fulfillment and emptiness. The only thing I didn’t like was the dynamic between Benjamin and Maya, it didn’t feel like it added anything to the story (except for insect references). The ending of the book left me with lots of questions, and a strong need to go and practice piano!

Let me be clear: my review of this book should affect/sway absolutely no one. It's completely biased, so don't let this rating convince you of anything, good or bad. I thought the story was a worthwhile one to tell, but the style--the micro-fiction style of storytelling where the narrator changes every other paragraph, essentially--is not for me. I couldn't fully enjoy it on that point alone. Again, you might feel entirely differently, so this review is of so little use I just wish you'd ignore it LOL.

This book was very intense yet simple, moving yet stagnant, and overall, intriguing. I enjoyed the different points of view the story was told from, and I appreciated the interesting full circle that the book made back to the beginning in the end. These books that sporadically state enormous truths as if they are simple, disregarded thoughts always seem to have a profound effect on me.

Mon premier Nancy Houston … et je ne suis pas déçue !!! Rythmé et enjoué comme une fugue de Bach, et profondément tragique, ce roman est un petit miracle.
Je suis tombée amoureuse d’absolument tous les personnages… je l’ai lu en trois heures et j’ai l’impression d’avoir vécu dix ans auprès d’eux.
J’ai eu du chagrin à les quitter.

« Chaque nuit pendant que je dors, le menuisier vient changer l'escalier. Chaque matin quand je me réveille, la hauteur des marches a été augmentée d'un centimètre. Bientôt je ne pourrai plus les monter, ces satanées marches.
Doucement, mon cœur. Doucement... ne bats pas si vite ! Il ne faut pas gaspiller les battements qui te restent ! J'ai envie de voir ce que deviendra ma petite musicienne. Donne-moi encore un peu de temps... Encore un peu... »

Lara, pianiste concertiste, accouche d'une petite fille grande prématurée et fait tout pour la rattacher à la vie.

Un roman polyphonique comme le suggère le sous-titre, dans lequel Lara, Sofia sa mère, Maya sa fille, Robert son mari, Lucien et Benjamin, ses voisins, prennent tour à tour la parole pour raconter cette histoire d'amour maternel, de relation fusionnelle , de transmission, de complicité, avec les partitions de Jean Sébastien Bach pour fonds sonore.
Une histoire sensible et touchante et une fin troublante que je n'avais pas vue venir.

Ma première lecture de Nancy Huston et je l'ai beaucoup aimée.

Nancy Huston saute dans le temps sans prévenir, mais ses retours dans le passé sont à un passé récent, contrairement à certains de ses romans. Chaque personnage parle pendant quelques pages, donnant ainsi des versions différentes d'un même événement. Prodige est l'histoire d'une petite fille née prématurément - très prématurément (env. 24 semaines) - et la relation fusionnelle que sa mère développe avec elle. La fille devient pianiste, comme sa mère, exauçant ainsi le voeux de celle-ci, exprimé dès les premiers instants de la vie de sa fille. Pour moi, c'est la détermination de la mère de voir sa fille s'accrocher à la vie qui m'a marqué plus que l'aspect musical.

c'était bien pour un roman de classe ; on a pris tellement de temps pour réfléchir à l'histoire. il discute les thèmes de la maternité, de l'enfance, du deuil, du chagrin, du mariage, du sacrifice, etc. c'était amusant que je puisse comprendre les commentaires sur la composition du piano. une message forte de la rôle puissante de la musique et sa manipulation de nos vies. une structure intéressante avec des trois perspectives d'échange. J'ai déjà écrit trop d'essais pour ce roman, alors je suis très heureux d'enfin avoir terminé

A unique style of presentation as the story is told in first person by a whole group of narrators.
The story is of Maya and Lara, her mother. Lara wills maya to live when she is born prematurely and never leaves her side. Lara is an accomplished pianist, Maya will be the prodigy that Lara never was.
Lara becomes ill and the roles reverse.
A pwerful work.

I loved this book! It's great for a medium-level french learner. It's easy to follow, fun, funny, full of bright characters, and has a lot of depth of thought and meaning incorporated into the story. Also quite a few quotable lines about music that are even more beautiful in french (perhaps due to the exotic factor!)

Lecture quelque peu déstabilisante au départ, vu toutes ces voix narratives qui s’entrecroisent, mais on finit par s’y faire et apprécier. On a l’impression de les entendre s’enchevêtrer dans notre tête au fil de la lecture. L’effet est particulièrement intéressant.

stories a mother makes up about the future to tell her premature daughter at the hospital. Sad and jerky style of storytelling. Purely narration is not always my favorite.
