Amid the depths of a bleak Boston winter, a recently married couple find their lives and their relationship unraveling after a series of deadly accidents, in this brilliantly twisting domestic thriller perfect for fans of Stacy Willingham, Greer Hendricks, and Megan Miranda.

Accidents happen, no matter how careful or well-intentioned you are. Psychiatrist Eve Thayer frequently reassures her patients of that fact. There are even times when accidents have good consequences—like when Eve met her now-husband, Nathan, at his collision shop after another car ran her off the road.

After a whirlwind courtship, Nathan and Eve have settled into domestic life. They have a lovely home on a quiet street, a beautiful baby girl, and even the perfect babysitter to care for her. And yet, something isn’t quite right.

The stress in Eva’s life is mounting, both professionally and personally. Though the clinic where she works has been remodeled since its notorious days as an institution for the criminally insane, she feels increasingly uneasy there. And in her own neighborhood, a break-in at a nearby empty house hasn't helped, either.

Detective Rita Myers hasn’t yet figured out whether Eve is a target or a suspect, but every disturbing discovery in this usually peaceful neighborhood seems to revolve around her. Only as a deadly ice storm crashes through does it become clear just how far from perfect Eve and Nathan’s lives really are. And as the cracks in the surface come to light, so do the sinister secrets that lie beneath . . .

Terri Parlato brings back Detective Rita Meyers in the third installment of her Domestic Suspense/Police Procedural series, though you can definitely read this as a stand-alone.

Psychiatrist Eve Thayer never intended to get married or have children but a car accident led her to Nathan’s collision shop and she now finds herself trying to balance a high pressure career with marriage and a new baby.

She seems to have found the perfect babysitter in Barbara, until her daughter Rosewyn is abducted while under her care.

Then there is a break-in at the empty house being renovated which backs up to Eve and Nathan’s property.

Coincidence?

Detective Rita Myers doesn’t think so, although she hasn’t yet figured out how the two crimes in this usually quiet neighborhood are related - or whether Eve is a Suspect or the target-and WHY?

The story unfolds through the alternating POV’s of Rita, Eve and Nathan, and I enjoyed having the third POV of the husband included as I particularly felt his anguish while his daughter was missing. All three characters are well developed and bring something to the story which focuses more on the crumbling marriage than on the missing baby.

I picked up on a few clues (which I enjoy doing) but other twists caught me completely by surprise, though maybe a bit OTT…

And, I felt the chill of the New England Winter as the secrets were spilled over the many cups of hot coffee consumed during the long, cold nights that Rita and her team spent searching for clues.

I am not a reader who always enjoys reading books which are a part of a series, but this is one series that I would like to see continue, which is a compliment to the author!

This was a buddy read with DeAnn. Be sure to watch for her review to find out if this case held her interest as well!

Once again, Terri Parlato pulled out all the stops with Watch Your Back and delivered an undeniable home run. The third book in a series, I’ve been looking forward to getting my Rita fix for altogether too long. This time around the well-developed characters and jaw-dropping twists kept my eyes firmly glued to the pages until the soul-satisfying conclusion. After all, the dynamite storyline was perfectly plotted with an attention-grabbing start and a deliciously unhinged climax that hit just the right chord. I was even tempted to skim despite wanting to make the book last, and I swear that I just barely resisted.

As for the characters, Ms. Parlato managed to craft solid personas who not only delivered in spades, but also had me looking at them all with barely veiled suspicion as the plot rolled along. Told via the multiple POVs of Eve, Rita, and Nathan, the alternating perspectives elicited plenty of deftly obscured clues and perfectly plausible red herrings. And while I did somewhat put the puzzle pieces together before each well-thought-out twist, there were still quite a few that shocked me but good. All told, despite a slightly over-the-top feel towards the end of the book, I was utterly addicted to a storyline that clearly became an out-and-out winner.

All said and done, this whodunnit of a plot was the perfect mashup of a low-key police procedural and suspenseful domestic thriller. With short chapters, immersive storytelling, and a sinister vibe, what was a step up from a slow burn utterly sizzled from the first page until the very last one. And while all of the books in this series could easily be read on their own, I beg you to reconsider. After all, why would you pass up the chance to get to know Rita better? Now comes the long, drawn-out wait for book four. At least, I hope that there’s another one coming! Please say that it’s so, my dear Ms. Parlato? I’m here ready and waiting. Rating of 4.5 stars.

4.5🌟
Book three of the Detective Rita Myers series.

Though I missed the previous book “(how did that happen!?”) I easily caught up with her and felt I didn’t miss a beat. If you’re not familiar with the series, no worries. You can easily jump in here.

Eve Thayer is trying to balance her career as a psychiatrist, her marriage to Nathan, and now motherhood. Thankfully, they have a sweet neighbor Barbara, who is more than happy to babysit their baby, Rosewyn.

Everything unravels after Rosewyn disappears under Barbara’s care. Who’ responsible for the missing child?

Long held secrets are about to be revealed.

Enter our favorite detective, Rita! Can she get to the bottom of the disappearance in time to save the baby?
I just love Rita’s character and the revealing peak into her personal life. Felt like a visit with an old friend.

Bravo Terri Parlato! You got me! I thought, “oh, that’s an interesting twist”.
But wait for it….🎤⬇️
Be prepared for a real shocker. I love a good twist and TP delivered!

Looking forward to the next in the series. Meanwhile I plan on going back to pick up book two, What Waits in the Woods.

4 stars! 💫 Massive thanks to RBmedia, Recorded Books, and NetGalley for the complimentary audiobook of this thriller—it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I’m SO glad I got to experience it! 🖤

Now, let’s get into it! Watch Your Back kicked off with this amazing chilling winter setting that pulled me in right away. The mystery had me hooked from the start! We follow Eve Thayer, a psychiatrist juggling her hectic life with a husband, a new baby, and a career that demands everything. But when her baby goes missing under the care of their perfect-seeming babysitter, things go wild. 🚨 Cue the twists, secrets, and all the drama that unfolds with Eve, her husband Nathan, and Detective Rita Myers—this book was insane in the best way!

The alternating POVs between Eve, Nathan, and Detective Rita? Total chef's kiss! It really gave me the chance to dive into everyone’s motivations, and honestly, I was living for it. Plus, those twists?! Some of them had me gasping like, no way! 😱 There was one moment at the end that felt a little over-the-top, but honestly, it was still such a rollercoaster ride, I couldn’t put it down.

And don’t even get me started on the audio! Nick Mills, Christina Moore, and Rebecca Quinn Robertson totally nailed it. They brought these characters to life and really cranked up the suspense! 🎧👏

Overall, I had such an amazing time with Watch Your Back. It’s this perfect mix of domestic suspense and police procedural, with a whole bunch of sinister secrets, cold New England vibes, and a late-night hunt for clues that’ll have you sipping coffee at 2 AM. 🕵️‍♀️

Content Warnings: Infidelity, missing child, dementia, blindness, knife violence

This was my first Terri Parlato book, and I’m definitely coming back for more. If you’re into crazy twists, secrets, and intense drama, you NEED to check this one out! 😍

So, Rita and the gang from Graybridge, a small Boston suburb, are all back for this third installment. This time, they’re working on a missing child case and trying to find the kidnapper. The book summary pretty much introduces the MC’s and the primary storyline. What the book summary doesn’t mention is pretty early in the story Eve and Nathan’s baby, Rosie, is kidnapped and Eve and Nathan’s marriage deteriorates even more than it already was before the kidnapping. None of this is a spoiler and it happens in the first 25% point.

The story flips back and forth between Eve, Nathan and Rita. Most of Rita’s case revolves around investigating Eve and Nathan and everyone in their life, including the creepy babysitter, Barbara. I like Rita, a divorced, child-free, middle aged, seasoned, former Boston cop who moved to the burbs a few years ago for a change of pace. She has a sort of friends with benefits thing going on with an FBI agent that she frets about making it anything more serious. She also has great taste in music too! I especially like her internal snarky attitude. We get to spend a lot of time in Rita’s head, which isn’t an unpleasant place to be. Reminds me a little of me, and my feelings about my dwindling family sphere and family drama as well as dealing with my aging body and surviving the backside of my career.

Anyway, there is a boatload of suspects and Rita starts discovering many of the secrets that many of them are hiding. It’s well into the second half that some of the storylines begin to collide. While I suspected who the kidnapper was as soon as a particular clue was discovered, the depths of the plot was a shocker when it exploded and the ending came in a flurry of intense and scary scenes. This was the best installment of the series so far!

The continuing character development of Rita dealing with her family drama and her “situationship” with Joe, an FBI agent she’s known for years was well done. Look forward to more of that. Would have liked to see more development on Rita and Chase’s partnership. Three installments in and Chase is still pretty much just a talking head once in a while. The pacing was steady to fast and the storyline interesting and intriguing. The writing was well done and, once again, I think it was the best installment so far. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.2 that I will be rounding down to a 4star review. I want to thank NetGalley and RB Media for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is the third book in the Detective Rita Myers series and I really like her as a detective. The beginning of this one definitely caught me, but it slowed down quite a bit. It was full of twists but they were pretty intense and tested believability, but I enjoyed the ride. Dr. Eve Thayer and her husband Nathan have fallen into routines that show how out of sync they are. Eve works long hours and Nathan is picking up the slack with their young daughter and the home. But they have secrets and when their daughter is kidnapped more than their secrets come to light. I do hope there are more in this series.

Kept me guessing the whole time! The suspense was kept high and I thought three POVs worked really well.

I figured out part of it pretty quickly, but was stumped by the rest. Enjoyed the twisty ending even if a little unbelievable.

First of all, I rarely give a low two star rating. I’m pretty much on my own with this opinion, but if you enjoyed the novel, I’m genuinely glad because it’s a horrible feeling when you grow to loathe the book. So why?

1. I read the first one in the series and liked Rita but jeez was she ever myopic in this latest instalment as the perpetrator stood out a mile. Okay, so it’s often not obvious except to the reader so on to point 2.

2. The reasons for the perpetrators actions were positively laughable. I mean, are we really meant to swallow that? It would lead to many of us becoming rampant revenge fuelled killers so I refuse to buy into that idea.

3. The dialogue was about as unrealistic as it gets. Absolutely no emotion, completely bland et cetera et cetera.

4. My main issue was the writing style. Five words, full stop. Six words, full stop. Oh maybe she pushes the boat out and gives us eight. Then back to 5. End result? Clunky, choppy, basic, dreadful storytelling in my opinion. It got to the point where all I was focusing on was the way that it was written rather than what was written.

5. There was no tension and no suspense. Too much telling, in fact, utterly spelling it out as if all the readers brain cells had expired.

6. There was a distinct lack of emotion, in fact a robot could probably have written this better. Actually, thinking about it my nine-year-old granddaughter probably could’ve written this better.

I’m fed up of authors short changing readers and that’s how I feel here. And where was the editor as I’d thrown this right back at the author and told her to rewrite it. It’s like they’re churning books out to cash in on success and not caring about the quality. Well, that just not good enough.

Rant over.
Breathe.
Over and out.

I’m sure many of you will disagree but that’s ok as it’s JUST MY OPINION!!! Take it with a pinch of salt! 😁💕

My first Terri Parlato story was definitely one that was hard to put down!!! I must say that I’m already a fan!

A thriller that is told in three POV. The wife, the husband and the detective, Rita. The first chapter hooks you right away. Someone wakes up in the hospital from a coma and has no idea how they got there. However, they think someone tried to kill them.

Everyone is a suspect! Parlato does a fantastic job setting up the characters and on a whodunnit chase! The ending was a little wild but I highly enjoyed this one!

Unbeknownst to me, this was the third in a series. It can be read as a standalone.

Thank you to Terri Parlato, Kensington and NetGalley for the opportunity!

Oh, Rita how I have missed you! This is the third book of the series that features Detective Rita Myers and I enjoyed this book as much as I did the others. Rita is a character I would want as a friend. She’s authentic, intelligent, and empathetic with a witty sense of humor. I enjoy her thoughts and perspective as the story develops. Once again, Terri Paralto delivers an intense, suspenseful, gripping mystery that pulled me in immediately. I look forward to future books by this author. The narrators masterfully brought the characters to life while adding a layer of intrigue and emotion. Thank you, NetGalley and RB Media for my audiobook.

Watch Your Back by Terri Parlato on audio was ….. ok. I absolutely hate reviews that land in the middle of the stars. It’s so much easier to effusively praise those hits that capture you, or poke fun at the ones which are awful. This novel lands smack in the middle. I read it, thought it was ok, would probably not read it again. Turns out the main character has been featured in two earlier books which make me, as the reader, anxious when I don’t know I’ve jumped into a series accidentally.

The genre was also a mixed bag - police procedural combine with domestic thriller. The trio of narrators, Nick Mills, Christina Moore, and Rebecca Quinn Robertson were fabulous.

A baby girl is abducted from a quiet Boston suburb in broad daylight.

Who did it and why?

BEWARE:
This pacey, twisty, and intricately plotted thriller is set in Massachusetts and features more red herrings than the Massachusetts seafood restaurant chain Legal Seafoods.

Even though the book is #3 in the author's Rita Myers series, it is a standalone read.

I was not a fan of Rita Myers Book #1, but this book wowed me.

I especially enjoyed the way the story unfolded from alternating POVs: Nathan (the baby's father), Eve (the baby's mother), and Rita (police).

WHY NOT 5 STARS?
The book's ending was OTT and the final twists were contrived and eye-rolling.

I listened to the audiobook read by Christina Moore, Rebecca Quinn Robertson, and Nick Mills.

Narrators reading the roles of Nick and Rita did a superb job.

The narrator reading Eve's role was lackluster and frequently mumbled.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

For the first 20%, I was so intrigued. I loved the characters and the dynamics between them. An affair? Yikes! Tell me all the tea. But once little Rosewyn went missing, things slowly went downhill. The ending was too predictable, which was really disappointing.

A solid 4 stars on this one! While it didn’t grab me right away and I found the audio a little slow moving to start, I turned the speed up to 1.5 and before I knew it I was hooked. This was a solid mystery that kept me guessing and although I guessed parts of it, there were still some surprises.

This wasn’t an edge of your seat kind of thriller, but it was a solid, good old-fashioned kind of mystery and I enjoyed reading Rita’s viewpoint. It felt a little like being in an old detective mystery. An enjoyable listen!

This is the third book in this thriller series and I think it has been my favorite. This was such a solid thriller with many shady characters. I only figured out about a quarter of the twist which is unlike me but I love to be stumped. I recommend going into this one pretty blind like I did - can be read as a standalone the only series topics that remain throughout the other books is the lead detective. This audiobook is narrated by Nick Mills, Christina Moore, and Rebecca Quinn Robertson. I adored the narrators voices. They were each absolutely perfect for the character they voiced. I love it when each character has their own voice. It also helped as this was twisty.

This was my first novel by this author, but it surely won't be my last. This has 3 main character pov chapters. The wife and physician, Eve, her husband, Nathan, who works at or manages a tow truck company and the detective, Rita.

This had cozy series elements surrounding Rita's character and that of her love interest. I could easily see the 2 of them heading up a series of strange cases.

At the same time, Eve & Nathan were interesting characters but didn't feel like a married couple. Eve's character also felt somewhat flat or one dimensional. It felt like the most fleshed out character was Rita, the detective.

This had multiple reveals, and each chapter brought imcreasing mysterious incidents. I wasn't really attached to the characters, but the story was paced in such a way that I did not care about that.

Thank you to Terri Parlato, RBmedia/Recorded Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to and review this audiobook. All opinions and viewpoints expressed in this review are my own.

Thank you to the author and publisher for this arc! Although the premise of this story felt like it was going down an all too familiar “domestic thriller” path, I was pleasantly surprised with the resolution of this story.
As an audiobook, I appreciated the use of three different voice actors for Eve, Rita, and Nathan’s characters.
While the story is not one I’ll be thinking about for months to come, it was still a fun and interesting ride.

Very predictable story.
Eve has no time for her husband Nathan. She's busy with her career and a baby.
Nathan decides to have a affair and ends up in the hospital.
Rita is on the case after their baby goes missing.
There's a few suspects but the perpetrator seemed far off the story line and her motives weren't strong.
Narration was good

Even though this was book 3, I was able to read and follow along with no problems. I loved the characters that Parlato created- each a bit messy but absolutely ones that we care about seeing through their story. There were lots of threads to pull here and Parlato did a great job of weaving them together to create something magical. I loved the narrators, particularly the one who voiced Rita as she really brought that character to life with her gritty voice that had lots of warmth underneath.

The prologue definitely starts the book out with a bang. I was enjoying the story until we got to the twist and it was so beyond ridiculous, it just ruined the rest of the book for me.

I really enjoyed Terri Parlatos first book in this series, All The Dark Places but the second book What Lies in the Woods fell flat for me. This was the tie breaker and unfortunately I think her books just aren’t for me. I think Rita as a detective is too bland of a character to have a whole series around. I didn’t care about her personal life at all and her detective skills were either nonexistent or based of a ridiculous whim that turned out to be correct.

The twist was just… so far beyond silly. I will say though, up until about 90%, I was enjoying the story. There were so many shady characters, it was fun to try to figure out who could be trusted. I know others will eat this book up and love every second of it.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC!

In the midst of a harsh Boston winter, a newly married couple's relationship starts to unravel after a series of deadly accidents. Eve Thayer, a psychiatrist, and her husband Nathan are facing mounting stress in their personal and professional lives. As their peaceful neighborhood is disrupted by unsettling events, Detective Rita Myers is trying to figure out if Eve is a target or a suspect. A deadly ice storm reveals the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface of Eve and Nathan's seemingly perfect life.

I understand that this book has received mixed reviews, but I consider myself fortunate to have received the audiobook for review. I believe that some books may be more enjoyable as audiobooks, so if you didn't connect with it in written form, I encourage you to give the audiobook a chance. I always make it a point to support my local library or small bookshop, as I appreciate the effort authors put into writing, especially in challenging times, to satisfy our reading cravings.

From the moment I started listening to this audiobook, I was captivated. The narrators did an exceptional job of keeping me engaged and fully immersed in the story. I have a great appreciation for narrators who can breathe life into a story and match the energy of each character. Often, while reading a book, I wonder how it would sound as an audiobook, and the choice of narrators for this one was spot on!

The characters in the book had secrets and a sinister aura about them. With multiple points of view from Eve, Nathan, and Rita, some clues were revealed early on. The main twist took me by surprise, and the suspense kept me on edge, making it difficult to hit pause when necessary. Despite the changing pace, the book was well-written, and the ending felt satisfyingly strong.

I was unaware that this book was part of a series, and I wish it had been better advertised online so I could have caught up on previous installments for a more complete experience. However, this book stands well on its own, as it didn't feel like I missed out on any character development. Still, I am considering going back to read the previous books.

If you enjoy a fast-paced whodunit with police procedural elements and domestic drama, this book is a perfect fit for you. If you find that the book isn't resonating with you, I recommend giving the audiobook a try. I hope this well-crafted, suspenseful book will earn a spot on your TBR list!

Thank you, RBmedia | Recorded Books, for the audio ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A chilling, fast-paced domestic noir thriller that keeps you on your toes. Winter in Boston is the perfect backdrop for this icy, tense, disintegrating marriage. Eve is a fascinating character—intelligent, borderline insane, caught between paranoia and reality. I also grew to like Rita, who is a truly multi-dimensional character. The setting only adds to the anxiety.

The author has a great balance of suspense, psychological development, and plot twists. Each chapter is another, churning layer of secrets. Brilliant, gripping, and suspenseful. Addictive and nerve-racking.

Autorka świetnie wyważyła napięcie, rozwój psychologiczny i zwroty akcji. Każdy rozdział to kolejna, napieprzająca się warstwa sekretów. Genialna, wciągająca i trzymająca w napięciu. Uzależniająca i doprowadzająca do nerwicy.

Here we've got a married couple going through a rough patch when all of a sudden their baby girl goes missing from the sitter's house, and that's just the beginning. This is definitely more of a police procedural/mystery than it is a thriller. So if you enjoy those then you will love this. The story was a little slower than I typically like, but it kept my attention, and I was enjoying the mystery. I found myself trying to figure everything out the further I got. The end was full of twists that I did not see coming, and I would be surprised if someone was able to guess them all because I was shocked!

This book has multiple POVs from three main characters. The audio has a different narrator for each character's POV, which I loved! It's much easier to get in that character's head when you have a different voice attached. I tend to enjoy these types of narrations the best! Overall, I rather enjoyed this one! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries or more investigative based thrillers.
