What an exciting political thriller that kept me reading to the end! The second book in the Luke Steele political thriller series once again features Luke and FBI Special Agent Amberlyn Reiner. Luke is a military aide to President Frazier, and is struggling with self-doubt after a tragic loss during his last mission. However, when an American journalist is killed in Istanbul, Turkey, Luke must take on a new assignment. While the Turkish police report the journalist is the eighth victim of a serial killer, US intelligence isn’t so sure. The president tasks Luke and Amberlyn to investigate and eventually, they go undercover as a couple in Istanbul to connect with a Russian source who holds key information to the case. Can they find him in time?

Luke has a dry sense of humor, listens when others need to talk things out, has a fierce sense of loyalty, and is caring and patriotic. However, he feels he’s not worthy of notice and can be hard to read. Amberlyn is smart, kind, and insightful. Their characterization along with that of the secondary characters is excellent.

The novel starts with an intriguing prologue and continues with investigations, suspense, and action. The author does a great job building suspense until it culminates in an action-packed ending. Readers get insight into events and operations in the White House as well as both Luke’s and Amberlyn’s jobs. A large part of this novel is the investigation and its discoveries. Then in chapter 31, Luke and Amberlyn arrive in Istanbul and the action gets underway and the danger to them escalates. There’s a slow progressing romance as a subplot. Other themes include grief, survivor’s guilt, trust, friendship, family, and power. Readers get insights from Luke and Amberlyn as well as an antagonist. My biggest quibble is that the shifts in points of view occur somewhat abruptly and multiple times during a chapter without warning. The transition is not smooth and effortless. Despite this, the book is one of the most enjoyable political thrillers I’ve read in 2025.

Overall, this excellent political thriller with a touch of romance was full of mystery, suspense, and action. Ms. Abramson is a new-to-me author and I can’t wait to read more of her backlist of novels. She is a superb storyteller who kept me on the edge of my seat with gripping scenes and a twisty plot. It was a riveting story full of drama, action, and interesting characters, with suspenseful moments that made it an enthralling read. It also incorporates some relevant real-world issues into the story that adds to the realism.

Shadow Mountain Publishing and Traci Hunter Abramson provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for October 07, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

I really enjoyed this second book of the Luke Steele series where Captain Luke Steele, military aide to the President, and FBI Special Agent Amberlyn Reiner are once again tasked to work together on a mission, this time on the international stage when they are sent to Istanbul, Turkey. The two have become friends with the potential of more. Maybe. This is a twisty, dangerous, action-packed, and suspenseful tale with an international threat. It is a clean read with likable, caring characters and interesting inside information and an intriguing premise.
I received a copy for an honest review. These are my thoughts.

I had the opportunity to reveiw Victim #8, which is the second book in the Luke Steele series by Traci Hunter Abrahmson. I absolutely loved it! Its a political thriller, with a small amount of romance inside. Luke's sluething and connections continue to pave the way for him and Amberlyn to prevent a nuclear war.

The plot was engaging. I found myself riveted as I read about Luke and Amberlyn's teamwork to track down a killer and allow peace to prevail with so many threats of war on the horizon. I also love how their relationship developed in this book. Their relationship is moving towards commitment and I can't wait to see how Traci develops it in future books!

I would recommend this book to teenagers and older who want to read a thriller without guts and gore. The romance is clean and any violence is described in such a way that won't give readers nightmares. Thank you to the author and publisher for advance copy of this book. A review was not required.

This was a good story. To be honest I had a hard time getting into it for quite awhile. I think it was because I felt like I was starting in the middle of a story because I didn’t know the back story of the characters. So I would suggest reading book one before this one. However, that being said once I got into it and knew the characters I really enjoyed it. Luke and Amberlyn are great characters, very brave and willing to do whatever they can for their country. There is a little bit of romance amongst the thriller parts. Amberlyn is ready to go all in but Luke is a bit hesitant. I loved that part of this story was set in Instanbul and I was very interested in that. This political thriller definitely has the thrill. There is a villain and the threat is huge. Overall, I enjoyed this story and I recommend.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

You know that moment when your heart’s racing, your brain’s screaming “just one more chapter,” & your tea’s gone cold because you forgot it existed? Yeah—that was me reading 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗺 #𝟴 by Traci Hunter Abramson.

This book is a 𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲-𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 cocktail of danger, loyalty, & slow-burn tension that proves spies can save the world 𝘢𝘯𝘥 your bookish soul.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗗
• 😍 Emotional depth—Luke’s grief + Amberlyn’s resilience feel real
• 💥 High-stakes action that kept me yelling “Don’t do that!!!”
• 🌎 International setting (hello, Istanbul!)—felt like I was there
• 💑 Perfect slow-burn tension + undercover “fake couple” trope done right
• 🧠 Clever twists—just when you think you’ve cracked it, BAM
• ✨ Honest mental-health rep woven naturally into the story
• 🎯 Clean read with emotional punch, not spice
• 🔍 Insider detail on intelligence ops + White House life—felt like a spy-memo appetizer

𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗠𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦 (𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀!)
💣 Luke’s self-doubt tested in the least safe “safe” place
🧩 Amberlyn’s clue that flips everything
🏃‍♂️ The Istanbul chase that’ll spike your heart rate
😱 The “we thought we were safe” twist
💞 That quiet, human moment that’ll melt you

𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦
💭 Victim #8 is that rare blend of thrill, heart, & healing. Abramson balances grief, loyalty, & love with nonstop action & humor. It’s the kind of sequel that ups the stakes & leaves you craving the next mission. If you love 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿, & a 𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿—this one’s your next binge.

Victim #8 by Traci Hunter Abramson

Looking for a book that will have you guessing and wondering who is behind the victims? Victim #8 was a fantastic political thriller that had my heart pounding and guessing who the killer was, and traveling to a foreign country and experiencing a bit of their culture right alongside Luke and Amberlyn.

I loved the slow burn romance between Luke and Amberlyn and already cannot wait for book 3 to see where their relationship goes and what adventure they go on next.
She is a behavioral analyst; he is a captain and aid to the President of the United States. Together they make a formidable team. I loved watching them work together, but I also adored the moments when he comforts her, Thanksgiving weekend, and all of the small gestures they do for each other.

I definitely recommend this sequel to Hometown Vendetta. And enjoyed it so much as to purchase a hardcover copy of the book.

Favorite Parts:

Plane flight
Going to Istanbul

Action packed from the opening scene to the final page! And I was hooked! I didn't want to set the book down at all. I had it in my hands every possible moment. I was so happy when the author announced that the second book in this Luke Steele series was releasing soon! I've been so excited to see what was next in store for Luke Steele and FBI Special Agent Amberlyn Reiner. They had quite the adventure in the first book and do as well in this second book! Time to go undercover again as they dive into figuring out the murder of an American journalist in Istanbul and how it connects with the government and safety of many others.

As they're working toward solving the murder and subsequent safety concerns, they're also trying to grieve and process what happened in their previous case, as well as their growing feelings and developing relationship. Nothing like danger and forced proximity to test your relationship with another person. I loved how Traci Hunter Abramson wove all of these aspects into this dynamic book! Hold on tight! You're going to love it!

Content: Clean. Nothing but some kisses between the main characters. Peril and suspenseful aspects.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

This book flaunts Traci Hunter Abramson’s expert experience- her experience as an author, as a former CIA officer, as a world traveler, and as an East Coast native. Her books continue to be well-written, surprising, engaging, and thrillingly cozy (if that can be a thing!) in a way that will guarantee that her books continue to reach wider and more diverse audiences.

In Hometown Vendetta, we saw Luke Steele and Amberlyn navigate a nightmarish home front terrorist plot, a complex fake dating ploy, and an appropriately cringy school reunion. Although their experience working together resulted in sparks, it also left both of them, but Luke especially, with some trauma to work through. That trauma still lingers in the air as the two of them continue their friendship in book two. Then Amberlyn and Luke are again brought together to work on a case involving a complex threat to national security. What starts as a case involving an American national randomly hit by a serial killer soon results in the unveiling of layers of complicated intel. Lives and the threat of war are on the line, and the fate of the future could possibly depend on the duos ability to work together. Will the two of them be able to save the country they love- and maybe even find healing and connection for themselves in the process?

There is so much to rave about with this book, but here were a few highlights:
- I love the light mental health rep going on with Luke! Often romantic suspense books gloss over the fact that their MMCs and FMCs undergo a lot of trauma saving the world. This one didn’t. It was cool to see how Luke worked through some stuff in a way that worked with him.
- The threat to national security!!! 🤯The possible nuclear war and Russian border shenanigans felt eerily real. Throw in a serial killer, some spy-like moments, and lots of White House scenes, and you’ve got a very unique and suspenseful plot.
- I loved that this one built on the first but could still be picked up blind!

If you’ve read till the end of my gushing on this book, then just go buy it for yourself!

I’m so glad I got to follow Amberlyn and Luke again! Their careers definitely keep things interesting, and the chemistry between them is off the charts.

When a journalist dies under suspicious circumstances and nuclear threat emerges, that could endanger millions, including the president. Amberlyn and Luke are once again paired up, going undercover in Istanbul to track down a source who might help them stop the threat before it's too late! Can they track down the killer, find out who's behind the threat, and save millions while keeping themselves safe?!

In the midst of all the action, they’re still processing the grief of losing close friends. Amberlyn is starting to heal, but Luke’s grief continues to stand in the way of any real progress with Amberlyn. Could they finally become a “real” couple, or will pretending for their jobs be the closest they ever get?

I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see what’s next for Amberlyn and Luke!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.

I didn’t think it was possible for Traci Hunter Abramson’s books to get better, but this one has outdone them all!

This one starts off with a bang that leaves the reader on the edge of their seat! This is a story that I would highly suggest setting aside time for; you won’t want to stop until it’s done!

The political intrigue is on another level. The reader is kept guessing until bombshells hit and plot twists catch you off guard!

Along with all the suspense, there is still room for warmth, meeting the family, moments of vulnerability and healing, as well as romance. Need an understated hero and courageous heroine? Done. This is not one you want to miss!

“Military aide Luke Steele and FBI Special Agent Amberlyn Reiner go undercover once again to unravel a string of murders that may be tied to a nuclear threat capable of igniting a war.”

I’m loving the Luke Steele romantic suspense thriller series. Once again, Abramson delivers a heart-pounding (in more ways than one) story that not only starts off at a great pace, but maintains it throughout the book, culminating in plot twists and thrills galore. I would definitely recommend reading Hometown Vendetta first.

Luke and Amberlyn are both such great characters and they work so well together. I loved that while they’re each solid and strong, they both have issues they’re trying to process and deal with. And there is a lot to process–things gone wrong, grief, regrets, time-sensitive mysteries to solve, and a budding attraction that has the potential to complicate things. Watching them go undercover and race against time to unravel this case was exhilarating, especially in the Istanbul setting.

The way that this author combines all the elements that make up a good romantic suspense was so satisfying and made the book hard to put down. I’m so eager for more Luke and Amberlyn.

Content: mild moments of danger/peril; mild romance; mild religion

This is the second book in the Luke Steele series. I read this book in less than twenty-four hours it was intense and action-packed.
When a series of murders come to the attention of the While House and the FBI Amberlyn Reiner is in the thick of trying to find a
link between the murder victims. Luke Steele gets tied up in the same investigation as Amberlyn, and they find themselves heading
to Istanbul to try to find some answers. My heart was racing as Luke and Amberlyn were being chased through the streets of Istanbul.

I always seem to enjoy the readable pace of Traci Abramson books and this was no exception. The characters are fun and believable and I get attached to them. The plot in this book got a little fantastic and convoluted, but it was still fun read about a military attache of the U S president and an FBI agent in the profile unit. I will look forward to the next book

Holy guacamole, Traci!
To say this book completely absorbed all my attention would be a massive understatement. And this is a big deal; for some reason, I’ve struggled to focus on books since I got sick this past summer. But I couldn’t put yours down. It was so exciting to be hooked on a book again! And dang, but your book was goooood.
I loved seeing Luke and Amberlyn on page again. Their shared history made this book even more interesting. The tension between them leapt off the page in a palpable way. I loved that there was uncertainty and second-guessing, but they were also mature and communicative with each other. I *love* that in the books I read! And I really loved the character growth for both of them. In a dual-pov book, it is really easy to see growth happening in only one character, so it made your book even more exciting that so much growth happens for both of the main characters.
The mystery and suspense in this one literally kept me on the edge of my seat. I gasped. I chewed my nails (metaphorically…I don’t actually chew my nails). I gasped again. I “oh no”ed and “what the..?”ed and “ahhh!” Literally out loud. Which I never do. But your book got it out of me. Brava!
I couldn’t read this one fast enough, and also finished it too soon, because I enjoyed it so much. Absolutely fantastic! Maybe my favorite of yours yet!
Your forever fan, Jessica

Victim #8 by @traciabramson
A Luke Steele Novel, book 2

Wow. I tell you what, wow! Traci always amazes me with how she can balance the intensity of a Suspensful thriller and the heartwarming wholesomeness of a budding love story. This story is action packed, even during the gathering of intel and scouring victim reports I felt like I was right along with them connecting clues and leaning on gut feelings.

This story can absolutely be read as a stand alone, but to get the full effect of all the two MC’s have been through read the first book, Hometown Vendetta.

Luke Steele, bullied in his youth and mourning the loss of a beloved friend he is trying to find the balance between his self worth and proving he can make a difference. He doesn’t see his amazingness and that makes him all the more swoony! I felt for him. The way Luke protects Amberlyn 🫠🫠

Amberlyn Reiner. FBI agent and still in awe of Luke and his job at the white house as the presidents Military Aid. I loved the way they worked together and her patience and understanding as Luke Grappled with Survivors guilt. Amberlyn is one of the strong ones and she held her own in all the situations they fell into.

This is one of those edge of your seat, constantly deciphering who dun it, and captivating slow burn romances. I didn’t want to stop reading and often thought about this read during my day to days.

This was a thrilling read. Once I settled down with it, it wouldn’t let me out of its grip. I read almost all of it in one day. This definitely my favorite of this series. A political thriller with touches of romance, this read had international intrigue, the POTUS, the FBI, assassinations, and so much more. There was nonstop action and questions and so much mystery in a very tangled web. I totally devoured this book and can’t wait for more! I’m both excited to read more about our MCs and their budding romance, as well as seeing more of the inner workings of the White House and the cases that they’ll work on together. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Victim #8 picks up right after Hometown Vendetta, which is book 1 in this series. I was so thrilled to see Amberlyn and Luke work together again!!

This story builds up with political strife including threats of a nuclear attack and assassinations. On top of the suspense and heart pounding action, we experience Luke and Amberlyn learning how to grieve the events in book 1 and how they learn to open their hearts. Amberlyn’s patience and acceptance of Luke was endearing to read. The representation of Luke’s mental struggles and transformation to accepting help was beautifully written!

Traci, as always, has written a captivating political thriller that had my heart racing, fingers turning the pages as fast as they could, and melting my heart with the romance woven through the pages. Thank you to @shadowmountainpub and @traciabramson for my gifted physical copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading Hometown Vendetta first to fully understanding the depth of a Amberlyn and Luke.

This book does contain violence but does not contain gore in any way.

✨Audio Review✨

A good thriller. This series, though similar to other stories by this author feels very fresh and extra exciting. The stakes are higher, the emotions are more raw. The characters seem more human and relatable. Once again, I’m impressed with this author’s ability to create complex villains and plots with twists and turns to finally get to a resolution.

This was a fast-paced political thriller with a dash of romance that kept me flying over the pages. The author not only develops an engaging, unpredictable plot, but also takes us through the journey of two main characters that are in the process of healing from a tragic loss. This book is the sequel to Hometown Vendetta. You don’t need to read it first, but I so recommend it to get to know the characters from the start. It’s so good too!
Haunted by a mission gone wrong, military aide Luke Steele can’t shake the weight of his failure. When an American journalist is murdered in Istanbul, Luke is forced to confront his fears and return to the field—this time partnered with determined FBI agent Amberlyn Reiner.
What begins as an investigation into a serial killer of 8 victims soon unravels into something far more dangerous: a conspiracy that threatens the U.S. president and millions of innocent lives. As Luke and Amberlyn go undercover to find the truth, their fake relationship begins to blur into something real, but Luke is hesitant to further the relationship.
In a race against time, Luke must learn to trust himself—and Amberlyn—before the past he can’t forget costs them both everything.
This book has everything I love in a book: a fast-pacing intriguing plot, broken relatable characters with a journey to healing and redemption, the sweetest romance, and a faith inspired hopeful message that lights and shines against an otherwise dark and uncertain world.
I just fell completely for Luke. He was vulnerable, but tried to mask it. Carrying the loss of his beloved friend and mentor, he focuses on serving his country as best as he can. But he doesn’t feel worthy of much, even less for Amberlyn’s attention. He’s hesitant to open up to love. Doesn’t seem reasonable for a man whose life is constantly in peril after all. Amberlyn is also a great character. Focused, yet painfully grieving the loss of her best friend. Empathic, understanding and patient with Luke’s walls, until she starts to melt them with her love and perseverance. They are both a great team working together, and the forced proximity helps Luke come out of his heart protection mode.
The storyline was intriguing to say the least, lots of action and constant deadly danger. A huge political scheme to bring down the US president and possibly start a nuclear international war. With unexpected twists, I was on the edge of my seat while Luke and Amberlyn navigated their investigation in Istambul with such high stakes. The villains POV made it even more chilly. An exciting story that left me breathless!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Shadow Mountain Publishers and was under no obligation to post a review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Another absolutely thrilling story from the queen of romantic suspense, Traci Hunter Abramson! Victim #8 kept me quickly turning the pages as Luke & Amberlyn are called on once again to combine their unique skills & work together; this time in Istanbul! I adore this Luke Steele series & couldn’t wait to follow these two endearing characters on another intriguing mission.

After suffering the loss of his mentor, Military Aide to the President Luke Steele’s trying to put his life back together. The only other person who understands his grief is FBI special agent Amberlyn Reiner who lost her best friend during the same mission. The spark of connection that existed as they worked together is still there, but neither one is willing to risk their friendship to push for more.

When an American journalist is suspiciously murdered in Istanbul, Amberlyn’s put on the case. His murder though has implications for the President’s upcoming visit to the country, & Luke & Amberlyn are asked to work together again. While Turkish police insist the journalist is the 8th victim of a serial killer, U.S. intelligence belives he may have been holding top-secret information with international implications. With lives on the line, it’s up to Luke & Amberlyn to unravel the mystery behind the journalist’s death & protect the President from a potential assassination attempt while avoiding a nuclear war.

This story was impossible to put down! The action-packed sequences kept me enthralled as Luke & Amberlyn face one dangerous situation after another. The chase through a Turkish bizarre had me on the edge of my seat! I loved the way the author really brought Instanbul alive & made me feel Iike I was right there with the characters.

The mystery was intense & seemed a frighteningly plausible scenario. I enjoyed having Amberlyn’s psychological analysis combined with Luke’s military expertise. They make such a great team & I can’t wait to see how their relationship continues to develop. There’s a hint of romance between them if only they can get past their grief & stay alive!

Highly recommend! Can’t wait for the next book! I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.

Absolutely brilliant!

Luke Steele is battling grief when he’s pulled into a high-stakes mission once again with FBI agent Amberlyn Reiner. They are tasked with uncovering the truth behind a journalist’s murder in Istanbul. Going undercover as a couple, they discover a chilling plot to assassinate the president and destabilize an entire region and must race against the clock to catch the men who will stop at nothing to achieve their deadly plans.

What you'll love:
romantic suspense
multiple pov
undercover assignment
fake relationship
danger and suspense
plot twists
positive mental health rep
continuation of a romance
wit and humor

How to put into words how much I loved this book?! Okay, seriously. I loved Hometown Vendetta (the first book in this series) but I think I might have loved this one even more? The stakes were higher, the danger more intense, and that slow burn romance between Luke and Amberlyn from the first book? All the happy sighs as they are slowly figuring things out!

I love the pacing of the story! It starts off with a slow simmer as the mystery builds and then BOOM, it's like a full-on spring to the end. I honestly don't think my heart stopped racing for the entire last third of the book! If you looked up "unputdownable" and "bingeable" in the dictionary, this book would be right there.

Yet in the middle of all that action, there were beautiful and emotional moments of connection between Amberlyn and Luke that had me swooning all over again. I also really appreciated the honest and positive representation of mental health and therapy that was woven into the story.

This is book 2 in the series and while you could pick this up as a standalone, I definitely recommend starting with book one so you get the full experience AND avoid spoilers. But either way, if you love romantic suspense or want to try out the genre, Traci is 100% your gal. Add this one to your TBR ASAP!!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

Traci Hunter Abramson’s Victim #8 picks up right where Hometown Vendetta left off, throwing readers straight back into the lives of Luke Steele and Amberlyn Reiner. Still reeling from the trauma of their last mission, both characters are learning to navigate loss and healing while realizing just how much stronger they are together. Their next challenge comes quickly when eight stabbing victims are discovered along the banks of Istanbul’s Faith District—one of them an American journalist. With stakes that stretch from Turkey to Azerbaijan, Russia, Washington D.C. and other places across the globe, Luke and Amberlyn are once again pushed into a deadly game of espionage and betrayal. And while nothing is ever a coincidence in this world, their partnership might be the only constant they can truly rely on.

What makes this book so easy to recommend is the perfect blend of high-stakes international intrigue and emotional depth. Abramson gives us that ticking-clock thriller energy—murders to solve, conspiracies unraveling, and nuclear threats looming—while never losing sight of the human core of the story. Luke and Amberlyn aren’t just operatives; they’re two people healing, learning to trust, and letting a believable and slow-burn romance unfold in the middle of chaos. Readers will love the globe-spanning settings that feel like a spy movie come to life, the authentic detail Abramson brings to intelligence work, and the irresistible chemistry between her leads.

By the end, it’s impossible not to root for this dynamic duo. Luke and Amberlyn are kindred spirits who balance grit with vulnerability, attraction with loyalty, and patriotism with personal sacrifice. Abramson has a gift for writing clean, heart-pounding stories that leave readers both satisfied and impatient for the next installment. Victim #8 is proof that this series is only gaining momentum—and if you’re not already invested in these two, now is the perfect time to dive in.

If you are a fan of suspense, action, political intrigue, mystery, and a side of romance- you are in for a treat. ANY book by Traci Abramson will keep you turning pages and staying up past your bedtime, and this one is no exception. Her insight of the inner working of the CIA, the political connections between country's, and how the government and the CIA works together makes you feel like you are getting the inside scoop.

This is the 2nd book in the Luke Steele series and although you can read it as a stand alone, I would highly recommend you read #1 first. It will help enjoy the backstories and be more fully invested in the outcome.

After a previous mission together where they were in a fake relationship, Luke and Amberlynn end up working behind the scenes on another puzzling international situation. There is some residual doubt and hurt from the outcome of events from their previous mission and Luke is struggling to come to grips with it. He is upfront with her, but it is definitely something between them as well as his confidence at work. I love the positive mental health awareness and the way it was portrayed in the story.

Working together to thwart a nuclear plot, save the president, uncover the reason for a suspicious death of an American citizen in another country- they again find themselves traveling as a 'couple'. They are prepared physically and have done their research, but will the doubts come between them and their success of their new mission? Will they be able to work together and trust in their training?

Be prepared for non-stop action, heart stopping danger, and a touch of sweetness. There is also humor and heart, a combination that makes for another amazing read by Traci.

VICTIM #8
A LUKE STEELE NOVEL
by: TRACI HUNTER ABRAMSON
@traciabramson

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~Going undercover once again to unravel a string of murders that may be tied to a nuclear threat capable of igniting war…

“If the missing aid workers were still alive, there was a chance for a rescue.”

-VICTIM #8, is quite a thrilling story! Amid danger, characters must overcome self-doubt and trust in budding relationships as they work to stop the catastrophic plot while time is ticking quickly away. Oh my, the intrigue, high stakes, danger, and heart-pounding suspense, this story definitely had my full attention! This is a well-written, surprising, and engaging adventure of a story! What I loved most was the emotional depth this story had. Watching dear characters work through grief and resilience towards and through trauma was heartfelt. Even when paths were blocked, characters were surrounded, these characters didn’t giving up. I loved the clever twists, the slow-burn tension, and that between much action, there were swoony, tender moments of sparks, connection, and the pacing of this story. My friends, this story is packed with romantic suspense and is worth the read but, please do yourself a favor, and start with book one to enjoy the full adventure!🙌🏻📚❤️

“There’s always a choice.”

•Content: no language, mild peril/danger, suspense, murder, gunplay, and danger-not graphic, grief, trauma, and betrayal, tension, kisses only.

“There’s never a dull moment with you.”

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Luke is struggling after the death of a close friend, which he blames himself for, but a suspicious death of an American journalist in Istanbul forces him to push past his grief to uncover the truth. And it doesn't hurt that Amberlyn, who pretended to be his girlfriend on a previous case, is also working this one. Their shared grief makes spending time together unexpectedly easy, but the circumstances are looking increasingly grim. And before long, discovering the murderer starts to seem the least of their worries... Will they be able to uncover the truth in time?

This was very hard to put down, so beware - it's not a good book to start late at night! I loved watching Luke and Amberlyn gradually grow closer to each other, and it made a good break from the heavier suspense side of things, which do get a little dark. However, in books at least one knows that good will win, and that's satisfying - I enjoyed watching them defeat the villain! Note that this is the second book of a series and there are plenty of references to previous happenings, so they may be better read in order. Having said that, I haven't read it and was still able to follower fine, so it's not essential. One minor quibble was that Luke and Amberlyn did seem to be able to get through an impressive number of enemies to achieve their goal - but the story held my interest enough I was well able to overlook it, particularly in the tension of the moment. All in all, a real page-turner with plenty of suspense but also a slow-burn romance joined with lingering grief, resulting in a good mix of action and relationship development. Recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Brief: Amberlyn works for the FBI, but typically doesn’t have to put herself in danger. Until she met Luke Steele. Barely recovering from their last adventure and still grieving, they both come together to save the world again.

The Debrief: @traciabramson is my go to for romantic suspens and the reason I have an obsession with the military, CIA, and FBI. She’s probably also responsible for my overactive imagination and super judgy looks I give people who ‘might’ be following me. And I’m not sad about any of it. I’m still alive because of her books. So close? 😂

But for realsies… Luke is dreamy. He’s got that whole protective still hurting slow burn knock me over in a uniform kind of thing going for him and I’m totally showing up in support of that. Every time. Amberlyn is a great balance to him in every way and I can’t wait to hear what’s in store for them next. I need more. And can someone please put Ian in his place?

🌎There’s a plot.
✈️A plan.
🚖A back up plan.
👜Shopping.
👎Bad guys.
🏃🏽‍♀️Escaping bad guys.
🥙Quiet moments of bonding.
🫶🏼True friendship.
🕵🏻‍♀️A famous mama.
⌛️Fast paced suspense
🇺🇸Presidenty coolness.
❤️‍🩹And a path to healing.

The Rhyme:
Luke doesn’t want to lose another person he cares about so he’s hesitant to open his heart. When danger threatens those he holds dear can he keep them all safe and allow healing to start?

Complimentary beautiful copy from @shadowmountainpub My own thoughts. I’m a long time huge fan of this author and anything by her should be added to your TBR. Although you shouldn’t starve yourself, I think this can stand alone.

This was so good and had me on the edge of my seat! I loved seeing Luke and Amberlyn again. I did not want to put this book down and it made me want to re-read the first book! Victim #8 is the second book in Traci Hunter Abramson’s Luke Steele series.
You are really thrown into the story as Amberlyn and Luke try to figure out the connection to the reporter that had died. There was so much going on and I was kept on my toes. I liked getting to know more about Luke and Amberlyn. They had both been through a lot in the last book that there were a lot of things that were weighing them down. It was cool to read about both Luke and Amberlyn growing throughout the book.
I could not recommend this book more! It was also interesting to read about the different work things that they did like Amberblyn working for the FBI and Luke as a military aid. As always, Abramson writes compelling and intriguing books! I would say that this is a romantic suspense, light on the romance as Amberlyn and Luke figure themselves out. Victim #8 is a wonderful book and a must read! It is a clean romantic suspense with some violence.

Book Highlights:
The suspense
Getting to see Luke and Amerlyn together
Traveling
Family and friends
Growing in confidence
New adventures

“Shouts echoed, and Amberlyn’s heartbeat pounded. They couldn’t be caught. Not yet.”

Warning! Fasten your seatbelt and tighten it a notch or two…Victim #8 by Traci Hunter Abramson is a thriller and one that you will want to brace yourself for.

Luke Steele is back on protection duty for the President of the United States after a tough loss on his last assignment. However, when the newest victim of a suspicious murder happens to be an American journalist, Luke is reunited with Amberlyn to investigate the case and solve the crime before another tragedy can strike.

I absolutely love this book! As you may know, any book by Traci Hunter Abramson is an auto-read for me and Victim #8 exceeded any expectations I had going into it. I love the depth of layers that Luke has – his vulnerability from his last case, to his desire to do his best on his current assignment. To his attraction and growing feelings for Amberlyn, but his uncertainty that he is good enough to pursue her. Amberlyn is also a strong character with her own insecurities that make her relatable and enjoyable. I love how much support and understanding she shows for Luke, while juggling her own worries at work, but at the same time, how confident and capable she is to take down bad guys!

One unique thing is the multiple POV in this book – Luke, Amberlyn, and Mikhail, the criminal mastermind behind the plot. Adding in Mikhail’s thoughts during the book was equally exciting and nerve-wracking. I am pretty sure I screamed “no, don’t” at least once (read that: more than once) when Mikhail was plotting out his plans.

I highly and completely recommend adding Victim #8 to your reading list – but be warned – you will become fully immersed and not want to do anything else!

CW: kisses only, mild violence as one would expect from a suspense/thriller novel

Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG13
As an FBI agent, Amberlyn is accustomed to being privy to top secret information—though this is the first time the president has given her top secret information personally and the first time she can’t discuss it with her boss. Amberlyn is assigned to work with Luke once more, something she is looking forward to after their last assignment, but Luke isn’t sure if he wants her friendship—or anything more.
While the national threat that Amberlyn and Luke deal with in this book is completely separate from the conflict in the prequel, the first book is necessary for understanding Amberlyn and Luke, as both of them are dealing with grief stemming from events in the prequel. Abramson refers to some current events, lending relevancy to the fictional conflict. The book focuses more on the relationship between Amberlyn and Luke than the imminent threat of nuclear missiles, though there is plenty of action and espionage to keep the pages turning.
The majority of characters are either American, Russian, or Turkish, though characters of other nationalities are included. The mature content rating is for kissing and illegal activity. The violence rating is for assault, gun use, mentions of terrorism and nuclear weapons, and murder.
