Superb summary of all the flaws and the few valuable insights of Wilhelm Reich. Of note was Rycroft's placement of Reich's efforts within the context of general climate of the era, how it relates to the goals of the Helmholtz School of Medicine and how it suffers from the attempt to place ideas in a completely formulated Weltanschauung .

Odd that this was published with with Modern Masters seeing that the author Charles Rycroft criticizes Reich about 85% of the time. Some of these criticisms seem warranted, but if you dislike a man and his work so much why spend the time to write a book about him? There is no mention of Reich’s cloudbusting, how the government confiscated much of his work, or how he died in prison.
Rycroft does give some credit to Reich’s Vegetotherapy, which had continued to reveal its validity in modernity, with such movements as core energetics and somatic therapy. As well the data regarding armoring has been documented in such works as The Body Keeps the Score.

It’s worth a read to see the many pitfalls of Reich’s thinking.

But I also recommend reading Reich for yourself.
