The Balkan Legends #3

Against a Crescent Storm

Rate this book
The Serbs defied the world’s most powerful ruler, and now Danilo and Maja must fight to save their people and their newly forged love before the sultan exacts his revenge.

The Balkans, 1389

Three years ago, Danilo’s people won their freedom from the hated Ottoman Empire, but with enemies on every side, the Serbs’ hard-earned peace remains fragile. Knowing the sultan will soon come for revenge, Danilo sets out to gain key allies for the coming war—and to escape the haunting grief of personal loss.

War has orphaned Maja and her brother, but they’ve moved forward from tragedy by crafting religious mosaics. Yet after being cheated and robbed, they are desperate for help. Rescue comes from Danilo, the man who once saved them from slavery to the Turks.

Danilo and Maja are soon drawn together by shared grief and affection, but complications arise on every side. A Hungarian noble suspects them of conspiracy. An Ottoman spy, Iskandar, is consumed by a vendetta against Danilo and a dangerous obsession with Maja. And a pending marriage alliance pits Danilo’s heart against his duty. As rumors of treason weaken Christian unity, hope of victory in the Balkans grows dim. Allies and enemies converge on the fields of Kosovo, where an epic battle will shape the destiny of nations for centuries to come.

I love books, so that makes Goodreads my favorite social media site. As a reader, I enjoy a variety of books. As a writer, I create historical novels with a wholesome mix of action, adventure, and romance. My stories have earned Whitney Awards, Foreword Indies Finalists positions, Readers’ Favorite Gold and Silver medals, a Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choice Selection, and a Praiseworthy Award.

I'm a wife and a mother of three, and I've called Washington State, Utah, and Alaska home. I'm usually reading a couple books at once and working on multiple writing projects too. Other than that, my life is pretty ordinary. I'm grateful for that. I'll let the characters in my books have all the adventures.

About My Goodreads Ratings:
I joined Goodreads as a reader first, but since I’m an author too, I’ve made some changes to how I rate books. For fiction, I'll give a book 5 stars if I enjoyed every page. Otherwise, I'll leave the rating blank. For nonfiction, 5 star books are ones I enjoyed enough that I’d like to read them again. They’re books I connected with and highly recommend to others. 4 star books are good books that I thought were worth reading once, and they’re also recommended.

A.L Sowards has done it again! A great story mixed with history, romance and war. Danilo and Maja both come from backgrounds filled with sorrow and grief. A mutual affection starts to form between them but wars, a possible arranged marriage and an obsessed archenemy threaten to keep them apart.

This book was a thrilling, if difficult, adventure. While geared to a more mature audience, I would consider it a clean read. It is a book about war and the struggles between nations, but Sowards does a good job balancing the heavy with the beauty. Her imagery of the mosaics throughout is beautiful and meaningful. I very much enjoyed this story!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

"There are a great many reasons for worry, a great many reasons for sorrow, but with Maja, I am reminded daily of how beautiful life can be. Fragile, too, but that's all the more reason to love deeply."

Against the Crescent Storm by A. L. Sowards

I've been sitting on this review for a few days, trying to put coherent words together to write this review. This is how it is every time I read a book by Sowards. And this beautiful story is no different. I am utterly captivated and in awe by all of the books I have read by her, including this newest one, Against a Crescent Storm. Her books always make me feel deep emotions, making them my favorite books and Sowards an all-time favorite author.

Against a Crescent Storm is an exquisite story of faith and hope in God and Jesus Christ, fighting for a just cause, and a tender and chaste romance that cannot be stopped.

Maja. She is kind, meek and humble, an artist, faithful to God, and also strong and capable of holding her own. I loved the way she cared so deeply for her brother and would do anything for him. I also enjoyed watching the way she fell so deeply in love with Danilo. She has integrity and will give up her love for it.

Danilo. Oh my goodness, I was so happy to get his story finally because he is such a great loyal friend to Ivan. He is almost loyal to a fault. He is also kind, thoughtful, protective, fights valiantly, and loves fiercely. He is definitely a new favorite main male character for me.

I loved the themes of fighting for God and country and standing faithful to one's own values in the midst of hardship. These characters are strong in body and mind and spirit, and Sowards beautifully demonstrates that. Her research is thorough and the history in this story is so immersive, that I felt I was there with the characters. I really love that she uses authentic names to the era and people. And as always, I greatly appreciated the historical notes at the end. I also appreciated the map and list of names and glossary of terms used by the Serbs and Turks.

If you have yet to pick up a book by A. L. Sowards, start with the Balkan Legends series. Hands down one of my absolute favorite series ever! I'm convinced she can do no wrong. Every book I have read by her has left me thinking and feeling deeply about life.

I highly recommend this epic story and series! In fact, I'm already ready for a reread of this book.

Favorite Parts:
Immersive history
Archery lessons
Singing
Mosaics and artistry
Intense suspense involving battles
Political intrigue
Building grass of a mosaic “And this is also a beautiful view”

Now I will admit I haven't read the two previous books but one of the reasons I signed up for this book launch is because I have Serbian heritage and a deep love for all things history. It is so hard to find novels that take place in the fourteenth century so when I came across this one I knew I had to read it! This was a deeply impressive story filled with great adventures and wonderful characters. I will say if I ever get the chance to read the other two books in this series I will surely enjoy them.

This series is absolutely epic and I was engulfed from the very first page. Danilo is such a compassionate, strong, loyal man and it was rewarding to observe him finding the desire of his heart. Having rescued orphans Maja and her brother, a forbidden and compelling romance buds and it’s a battle between duty and desire. This is a series that must be read in order to appreciate the full scope of the characters and events.

The themes of love, friendship, devotion, and hope permeated the whole book and I was captivated by the heroic battle scenes, the tight bonds of kinship, and the strength and conviction of each character.

A.L. Sowards never fails to thrust a reader deep into history, allowing for many emotions and layers to be discovered as the pages turn. I am in awe about the details given and the mindfulness granted towards research. Although this is historical fiction, there are many grains of truth depicted. This is my favorite way to learn about historical events.

Content: mild romance; moderate religion; mild+ war/fighting/battles

Wow! What an incredible story! I loved reading about Danilo and Maja's journey! If you've read the previous two books, then you'll recognize Danilo's character. If you haven't read the previous books, I highly recommend that you do for the continuation of the whole story. But I also think that the books can be read as standalones and you will be able to enjoy them individually and be able to understand what is happening very easily. But since I've read them all and know how incredible they all are, I'm definitely encouraging you to read them all. ;-)

I love A.L. Sowards's writing. Her ability to dive into historical moments of time that are somewhat lost to most everyone, and to create moving and captivating characters, pulls me back to her books time and time again! She has a reader fan for life! I love history, but I don't always go and dive into it and study it. But I'm so grateful for authors, especially this author, who does and shares it with us in their writing! Wow! I've heard that the audiobooks are really well done for this series and think I will probably revisit this story the next time through the audiobooks.

My heart ached for Maja and her brother as they were trying to find a way to survive, only to find themselves in danger. Enter Danilo at the right time and through his quick thinking, was able to protect them. But unfortunately at this time period, the Ottomans and other dangers are everywhere. I think I caught myself holding my breath several times while reading this book. There were so many heart pounding moments that I didn't know what was going to be the outcome. I kept hoping that they would be fine and the other secondary characters as well, but war in a book is never giving a for-sure outcome! So I kept hoping for the best with it!

The ups and downs for these two had me wishing that I didn't have to set the book down at all. I was completed immersed and invested in their story wishing I could know everything that was going to happen, but not wanting to know either so that I could enjoy the journey along with them.

Such a beautiful love story as well. Danilo and Maja have many sacrifices to make but every time dangers come at them, especially Maja, they will do everything they can to protect and fight for their lives and love. Seriously an epic love story! Loyalty, family, sacrifice, sorrow, heartache, healing, and so much more is all being shown throughout this book!

Content: I would recommend this book for older teenagers and up. There are some aspects that can be triggers for some readers. But I would consider this book a clean read. Yes, it does talk about war and there are moments of peril, which the author addresses it all very carefully, but even with that it is done in a way that is clean. There are battles and sword fights, etc., and death. Christian beliefs are talked about. Some attempted assault against a female a couple different times but doesn't happen. Some kissing but nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I finished Against a Crescent Storm a couple of weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it. It's everything you could want in historical fiction: political intrigue, big battles with high stakes, and a slow-burn, star-crossed romance.

The story follows Danilo and Maja in the Balkans in 1389, as Serbia braces for the Ottoman Empire's return for revenge. Danilo is the kind of hero who carries a lot of grief but is still fiercely loyal and committed to doing what’s right, while Maja is strong and quietly courageous, which makes you root for her right away. Put these two together on a dangerous journey full of spies, lies, and political chaos, and I was hooked.

I liked how Danilo and Maja’s relationship grew naturally from spending so much time together, and I could feel why they fell for each other. Of course, nothing is simple—especially during times of political unrest—when Danilo gets home and finds out his cousin wants to use his marriage as a political bargaining chip. Cue all the emotions. What I loved most was that the book never loses sight of the bigger picture. It’s not just a love story; it’s about a nation fighting to survive, betrayals are coming from within, and a huge fight for their freedom is looming.

This entire series is fantastic and would make a great miniseries! I love this author's historical fiction because she makes history come alive and I always learn something new. I appreciate that she puts maps, character lists, a glossary, and historical background at the beginning of the book for easy reference. The author includes some great historical notes at the end that tie the story to real events—they're definitely worth reading.

I also listened to the audiobook using Hoopla, and the narrator is amazing!! He had so many voices to do and he did a fantastic job! I highly recommend checking out the audiobook. I received an advanced copy from the publisher and an e-arc from NetGalley. I also bought a digital copy for my personal library. All opinions in this review are my own.

This was a fantastic conclusion to an incredible series. It skillfully blends together exceptional storytelling, intense action, heartfelt emotion, a beautiful love story, and so much historical depth.

I love when books not only entertain, but teach me something new. This one certainly did both. The story was riveting, and I learned so much about some events in history I knew nothing about before.

The author’s meticulous research and attention to detail is obvious, making for a story that’s as informative as it is captivating. She really brought the conflict between the Serbs and the Ottomans to life for me, and helped make sense of what the conflict was about.

If you enjoy epic historical fiction with elements of faith and beautiful romances, this series is a great one to add to your list!

This is book 3 in the Balkan Legend Series, and one that needs to be read in order to appreciate the entire story.

I received a complementary copy but a positive review was not required.

Against a Crescent Storm was another wonderful addition to the Balkan Legends series! Set in medieval Serbia this series captures the conflicts and triumphs of a tumultuous time. It is the third full length novel of the series and should be read it order. If you’re able to read the prequel novella first (available only in ebook and audiobook right now) I definitely recommend that for full context.

Throughout this series I have rode an emotional roller coaster along with these characters as they face captivity, victory, despair, hope, heartbreak and love. It was wonderful to have the male main character in this book be a character I have watched grow up across the series and become a man. The characters have really come alive and left me feeling so invested in their journey.

This author is known for having excellent historical research woven into a compelling story and that was definitely true once again. History lovers can get even more context from her author’s note at the end.

Pick this book up if you’re looking for a piece of history you don’t normally read about and storytelling that captures what it looks like to live and love in times of war.

Trigger/content notes: war combat and related violence (not gory), attempted rape.

Oh I loved getting Danilo’s story!! Diving back into the history behind this trilogy is brutal and at times, hard to read, but the hope and love infused within these characters make turning the pages easy.

It was a reckless adventure through a period of time that is lesser known. And I always LOVE reading historical fiction when its about time periods I don’t often hear about. I love how deeply this was researched and all of those pieces woven into the fictional characters.

I adored Danilo and Maja. A.L. Sowards continues to write insta-connection incredibly well and I often find myself mesmerized by the depth of the romance. I also loved getting to see the couples from previous books and where there lives ended up as well.

This was a story brimming with hope and heart and the depths one will go for those they love. I admire many of these characters. The intensity of the action will have you flipping pages and begging your favorites to make it out okay. One for the books!!

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: low
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: high
- Content warnings: attempted sexual assault, kidnapping, murder, weapons violence, loss of life and war themes, grief

I was thrilled to learn that the third book in The Balkan Legends series was being released. Author A.L. Sowards shines at making history jump off the page. I've been impressed over the years as each book has become stronger and better. Against a Crescent Storm is truly icing on the cake.

The book begins in 1389, three years after the Serbs gained their newfound freedom from the Ottoman Empire. With peace being fragile, they need to unite with strong allies against the Sultan and his armies.

Danilo ranks as my top side character from past books. He's a fierce, Serb fighter, cousin to two Zupans from the first tales. He proves his love and loyalty best to his Zupan and cousin Ivan. This novel amps it up. Scenes like that brought tears to my eyes more than once. Danilo also finds fresh love and it comes from Maja, the sweet and pretty mosaic artist he once saved. Their romance is a beautiful thing and pulls at heartstrings.

The battles that took place in the Kosovo lands were heartbreaking and fierce. Sowards has a way of writing realistic war scenes without being too graphic. During these chapters, I found myself walking away, not wanting to see the fate of Danilo and Ivan, as I was so invested in these characters and their well-being. I also loved the growth that I saw in Ivan's wife, Helena, as she became a great leader in her husband's absence.

To wrap it up, read the earlier books first for the full impact. It can be read as a standalone, but the emotional payoff won't be the same. I love this series, and I don't want to let it go. The best part? I can return anytime. Audiobooks will be my next adventure with The Balkan Legends series. If you want your own escape, jump to the 1300s and immerse yourself in The Balkan Legend Series.

AGAINST A CRESCENT STORM
(The Balkan Legends #3)
by: @a.l.sowards

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~THE SERBS DEFIED THE WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL RULER, AND NOW DANILO AND MAJA MUST FIGHT TO SAVE THEIR PEOPLE AND THEIR NEWLY FORGED LOVE BEFORE THE SULTAN EXACTS HIS REVENGE.

“It seems we have to immortalize hardships either in song or in art. Perhaps to remind us that they can be
overcome.”

-AGAINST A CRESCENT STORM, is #3 in the Balkan Legends Series, 1389. This is an epic historical novel set in the Balkans, where great faith and deep loyalty are tested in the raging fires of war. It’s an inspiring story beautifully blended with unity hope, and strength! I thoroughly was moved by dear characters, who have had their fair amount of trials, and who are drawn together by shared grief and affection yet, torn between love and loyalty. This dear story had me feeling all the feels! I do suggest a tissue on hand for moments when eyes need to “sweat” out all the feels. It’s the strong family ties, the excruciating choices, Christian themes, sacrifices, and emotion throughout, that had my whole heart! I greatly recommend reading this moving series to order to truly appreciate this story. Worth the read, absolutely!📚💯❤️

“When storm clouds gather, sometimes there is comfort in seeing a bit of sunlight shining on a friend.
And there is no one I would wish sunshine on as much as I would wish it on you. Whether or not I return, I want you to be happy.”

•Content: No language, mild peril, lurking danger, cheering, robbery, conspiracy, loss, grief, hardship, war, death, kisses only.

“Once rescued, and you never left my mind. Twice
rescued, and you never left my heart. Thrice rescued,
and I pray you will never leave my side.”

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

“Everything seemed so bleak for so long. I didn’t know if the pain would ever end, if it would ever soften enough to let in happiness or love. Then I met you, and it was like the coming of spring after a long winter.”

The Brief: Amidst the conflict between the Serbs and the Sultan’s retaliation, Danilo escapes and helps Maja and her brother find a place to settle. But it’s not the peaceful home he hoped.

The Debrief: I am once again shook. I feel like I need a support group every time I read an @ book with lots of snacks to calm my nerves. This story continues the ever elusive peace right when I thought I was finally marked safe from previous plot lines. I was not safe. There are sweeping battles and betrayals and danger lurking behind every tree. Absolute loyalty between Ian and earning bestie goals for life.

There’s also the beauty of hope as characters literally and figuratively piece together their indomitable strength with love. I was there for all the pieces. I was there for every hard earned step towards peace. I also had this deep appreciation for those who lived during such tumultuous times and survived. They found beauty and peace within even while living in the midst of chaos. And learning about the mosaic process was so interesting.

Danilo was the epic protector and Maja the perfect tree climbing artist who never gave up. Their love story destroyed me in all the best ways. And bringing all the characters together at the end made me breathe again.

The Rhyme: When Maja’s life shatters into tiny pieces can she build a new foundation of hope? Danilo has experienced great trials and tremendous loss, but can he find a love that will help him cope?

Highly recommend reading the entire series. Complimentary copy. My thoughts. Kissing only. CW: this is 1300 in the Balkans so lots of intense battles and fighting

The wars continue with the Serbs and the Turks in this series. A. L. Sowards weaves a story of two cousins who are friends, one a ruler of a city , another a battle worn widower. Two orphaned mosaic siblings, Maja and her brother, who travel from church to church, creating murals from the bible. When they are attacked and left with no wagon or horse and the last of their money is gone. They try to carry their supplies and travel on foot, hoping to find work in a bigger city. The battle worn widower becomes a hero who steps in to save her from a bitter enemy. This is a little dark, but with a beautiful woven relationship between two unlikely souls.

Another historical fiction masterpiece by the one and only A. L. Sowards. I have genuinely struggled to write this review simply because this story is absolutely incredible and I have had a hard time trying to put all my emotions into words. This story puts the reader right in the middle of a significant and pivotal moment in medieval Balkan history.
I have been so excited for this story and it did NOT disappoint. You get to meet Danilo in the very beginning of this series and you can’t help but fall in love with his strength, loyalty, and hopefulness. He’s lived a hard life and has endured many moments of grief, persecution, oppression, and peril. He really has every reason to give in to the darkness and despair that was frequent during these medieval times. But he stays strong, he stays devoted and steadfast to his family and values, and the concept of quitting simply is not part of his character. Thankfully Maja comes into Danilo’s life and is the perfect balm for him.
Maja blows me away with how completely amazing she is. Having been through her own refiner’s fire moments she has yet to give up her hopes and dreams. She is responsible, smart, resilient, compassionate, and hardworking. Like Danilo, it would honestly make sense if she gave in to the hopelessness that could be overwhelming at times during these moments in history, and yet she never once does. And not only does she not quit, she finds beauty through her art and is able to share that unique perspective with others.
Overall this whole story was exceptional and truly special.
I cannot thank A. L. Sowards enough for writing these stories and truly making history come alive. The research, work, and love that went into every story in this series, and especially this book, is felt on every page and in every chapter. If you enjoy historical fiction I cannot recommend this book and series enough.

A special thank you to Shadow Mountain for gifting me an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and my positive review was not required but happily given.

Once again, A. L. Sowards leaves me speechless! Her books are Epic and Magnificent, and this one is no exception! It may split your heart in two in some parts, but she knows perfectly how to mend it at the end! I have been looking forward to Danilo’s story for some months. Danilo is Ivan’s cousin and loyal best friend, and he deserved so much his own story. And it was so good: heart-tugging to say the least but no less beautiful and touching.
Three years after Serbia’s hard-won freedom from the Ottoman Empire in the fourteenth century, peace hangs by a thread. As the sultan’s vengeance looms, the soldier Danilo journeys through a fractured land seeking allies—and escape from his own grief.
When he rescues Maja and her brother, orphaned mosaicists betrayed and destitute, their lives become entwined in peril and forbidden love. Pursued by enemies and haunted by duty, Danilo must navigate a world where loyalty demands sacrifice.
As love and honor collide, his choice will shape not only his fate, but that of a nation on the brink of war.
As always, the best part of the book for me is the character depth. Danilo won over my heart since the previous books, with his loyalty to his cousins, and particularly to his best friend and now zupan Ivan. His loyalty runs to the extent of being willing to sacrifice his life for his loved ones and for his country. He carries a heavy burden having lost his wife and newborn to childbirth. His journey to love again is touching, as it far away from his mind. But the sweet and resilient mosaicist steals his heart away with her gentle nature that hides a strong heart filled with love and compassion. Maja has suffered greatly too, seeing her parents murder, and she shoulders the heavy load of making a way for her and her young brother Luka, in a world surrounded by violence and search for power and conquers. She wasn’t afraid to face danger in order to help others. She fiercely defends her loved ones (loved when she threatens Ivan with a spear). Their romance was sweet, hard won, full of obstacles that made it seem impossible. But hope never died for both of them.
The POV of the villain, Iskandar, one of the most despising I’ve read of, made the story more suspenseful and had me at the edge of my seat.
The historical details, the vivid description of the places and happenings was so realistic that I could see the scenes like a movie, and almost smell the stench of war and destitution. There are more than a few scenes of war (that’s the main part of the plot), but it didn’t feel overly graphic. Just very realistic, as I imagine it must have been during that era. My heart was torn and received more than one hard blow during the war part, but also, my heart soared with the honor, integrity, sacrifice, and loyalty of those hundreds of unknown heroes. My heart raced for the second half of the book, where the characters were in constant deadly peril. I couldn’t put the book down and had to finish it in the wee hours of the morning. It was that good!
This book must have had an incredible amount of historical research and that makes it even more appealing. It almost seems as if the author was there and experienced war herself. The glossary at the beginning of the book was very helpful and informative.
I also loved revisiting with characters from the previous books: Ivan, Kostia, Milos, Helena, etc. This book, even if it can be read as a standalone, it is so much better and richer if read in order. You get to know the characters better and continue their journey in the continuing books. They are all so lovable, they will stay in your heart.
I don’t have adequate words to say how good this book was. So realistic, heartfelt and inspiring. The faith inspired message of unconditional love, sacrifice and forgiveness is not preachy, more subtle but present.
All in all, an epic medieval story that will leave you reeling. I still have a big hangover of this book. I’m not sure if this is the last book, but I dearly hope this saga continues. Especially because peace in Serbia still hangs in the balance. A highly recommended book for lovers of historical fiction and romance! Definitely a must read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Shadow Mountain Publishers and was under no obligation to post a review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

I've been looking forward to Danilo's story. He is the cousin to Konstanin, the main character of Beneath a Crescent Shadow, and the cousin and best friend of Ivan, the main character of Beyond the Crescent Sky. Danilo has been by Ivan's side from the beginning, and it's no different now. Danilo was married at some point during Beyond the Crescent Sky, but his wife and child died before the book was over. We never got too attached to their story as we just didn't see much of it. But it was an arranged marriage.

Against a Crescent Storm starts off with Maja and her brother seeking work. Their father was a mosaic artist that specialized in church scenes. Maja learned all from him, but being a woman and fairly young, she isn't offered many opportunities. Her parents were killed at the hands of Iksander in the previous book. Danilo and Ivan saved her and her brother, especially because Iksander wanted to capture Maja for his wife. A prisoner, slave wife anyway. Maja is terrified of Iksander, but she has so few options. She and her brother were almost captured on the road traveling to Sivi Gora looking for mosaic work. Surprisingly, Danilo and a group he was with saved her and her brother again.

Danilo starts with a desire to protect Maja and her brother. But through their repeated close proximity, he comes to see her in a deeper way. Yet things aren't smooth sailing for him. Being the cousin of a zupan means that Danilo will likely have to marry for a political alliance.

I was a little bummed that Iksander was still a part of the story. He was a great villian in that I hated him so much.

Favorite quotes:
-desire wasn’t the same as ability."

-He wanted revenge, and he wanted wealth. But more than those, he wanted to be important. He wanted to have influence and see his people grow into something grand.

A great statement for a villian to make.

-“Is it better to do what is wise or what is right?”

-There will always be threat, and there will always be evil. If you let them take you away from what you most want, what you most need, then you have given them an extra victory.”

-“It’s not our deaths themselves that we must offer up, just our willingness to sacrifice all for the sake of our people.

-Sometimes, we serve our cause best with our deaths. Other times, we serve our cause best with our lives. I am prepared to give either.”

-“Once rescued, and you never left my mind. Twice rescued, and you never left my heart. Thrice rescued, and I pray you will never leave my side.”

I have really developed a love for historical fiction. Yet this time isn't one that I've spent too much time learning about. These stories really show me how much I have to appreciate about the age I live in. Of course, all times and places have pros and cons. I appreciated the Christianity woven through this story.

Against a Crescent Storm was everything I hoped it would be. And I would love for AL Sowards to keep writing books in this time. Against a Crescent Storm get 4 Stars. Have you read Against a Crescent Storm? What did you think? Let me know!

DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK!! No, I'm not shouting. I'm excited about Against a Crescent Storm by A.L. Sowards

Sowards' writing always blows my mind, but this one, blew me out of the water too. I met familiar friends in Ivan, Danilo, Helena and Maja, and history familiarized by Sowards' Balkan Legends.

Set in 14th century Serbia that's fighting a vanguard action against Ottoman domination of the Balkans, it is also the beautiful, intense, slow burning love story of Maja, the penniless mosaic artiste that Danilo saves twice from a fate 'worse than death'.

Their mutual enemy and escaped slave, & ghazi (raider), Iskandar wants Maja and once he stumbles on her and Danilo, he stalks her relentlessly across the forested, sparsely inhabited landscape.

Courageous Maja, rescues herself when she stands up against Iskandar's attempts to force himself on her. However, she still needs Danilo's help to flee. But he's a captive...to Iskandar, awaiting his pleasure!! Do they escape?

Alongside this drama and tension are other threads: plans for Danilo's marriage to Ekaterina, the young daughter of a powerful local noble, to give Sivi Gora more allies against the eventual Serbian clash against Sultan Murad of the Ottoman Empire. Zupan Ivan and Dama Helena have arranged this, unbeknowst to Danilo and Maja.

Can there be a happily ever after for Danilo and Maja or will he die cruelly at Iskandar's hands? If they escape, what about Ivan's plans to use Danilo to gain allies? Can he escape that net?

Or will they fall in a third snare? Battle with the Ottoman Sultan Murad on the dusty plains of Kosovo with Iskandar's shadow in the background, hovering over them like an ill omen?

Much is known in hindsight, but this book embodied courage, resilience, devotion to duty, faith, hope, trust, a deep, abiding, intense love, bravery, and plain dogged stubbornness in the face of insurmountable odds. A strong, abiding faith and trust in God, a willingness to live and die for their faith and way of life.

Do Danilo and Maja have their happy ending despite all obstacles? What about the Serbs and the results of the battle of Kosovo? Do they live to fight another day to keep their precious independence?

In the hands of a master craftsman, Against A Crescent Storm is tastefully written, navigating delicately between the scenes of violence and war and the softer, sweeter strains of love, yearning and hope.

The glossary and cast of characters was very helpful, but I wish it included a detailed family tree/genealogy to make it easier to track relationships across the novel. Initially, it took a little time to wrap my head around it.

Mild content warning: there's some violence (it's set in a mediaeval war after all), and a near-rape scene.

If you only read one historical novel this year, make it this one. I loved, loved it.

Yet another action-packed, against-all odds romance by A.L. Sowards that completely blew me away! With the stakes higher than ever, Danilo and Maja must acknowledge that while war might not be a good time to find love, it also might be the only thing that pulls them through it.

Danilo and Ivan's brotherly love for each other is the stuff of legends. From their early childhood, these two boy cousins turned men have fought side by side through battle and through exile. But in book 3, we see that loyalty tested to the max. The pair might not know it, but on the horizon of Serbia's future is the legendary historical battle of Kosovo against the great Ottoman empire and its Sultan. It will take every bit of skill, loyalty, and devotion they possess to know how to navigate such treacherous waters.

Enter Maja. Maja was once saved by Danilo during a terrifying raid involving the evil Iskander (you'll remember him from the previous book!) She's not expected to have both men pop back into her life: one to save it, and one to harm it. Although she's an artist by trade, she'll need to use her wit and courage to be able to escape the grasp of Iskandar and help keep her Serbia safe.

This was an absolutely stunning installment in this series! The loyalty between Ivan and Danilo is the stuff of legends and really added depth to all that happened in the book. I also loved Dama Helena in this book. She is a BOSS who takes care of business despite seemingly insurmountable odds. I want a Dama Helena t-shirt! I also love when Maja makes an off hand comment about how Helena hasn't known hardship- ha! If she had only read the second book. But that moment just goes to show how no one, regardless of status, is free from hardship during this time period. Both Helena and Maja prove themselves strong, capable women who will weather the storms of life for the ones they love.

And Maja and Danilo! They are just absolutely perfect for each other. I loved Maja's sweet artist personality as well as her willingness to fight when required. It complemented Danilo's strong warrior character (although I think Danilo is the medeival Serbia equivalent of a big guy who is internally a giant teddy bear).

The suspense and fighting in this book was also intense! There were several surprise twists that kept me turning pages until late into the night. There is definitely a lot of violence, danger, and fighting in this one, but I felt like it appropriately acknowledged the horrors of war without coming across as super gory.

Put this book on you non-negotiable TBR, and you'll thank me later! A well-deserving five star book. Can we get another one please?

All the stars for this exciting third book in The Balkan Legends series! Against a Crescent Storm kept me on the edge of my seat with one rollercoaster of a ride! I adored Danilo’s story & second chance romance. Filled with legendary battles, dastardly villains, betrayals, a heart achingly lovely romance, & intriguing historical details, A.L. Sowards weaves an inspiring story that captured my heart & imagination. She brings the tumultuous 1389 Balkans to life in such a way that made this book impossible to put down.

After losing his wife & child three years ago, Danilo Darrasevic’s willing to do whatever it takes to keep the hard won freedom he & his cousin Zupan Ivan Miroslavevic fought for. On a mission to gain alliances against the Turks, he rescues a beautiful, orphaned mosaic artist & her young brother who were robbed & left starving. Danilo helped them once before years ago, & Maja’s never forgotten her handsome rescuer.

As they travel together to Siri Gora, his feeling of connection & shared grief with Maja begins to blossom into love. But, when Danilo reaches home, he finds his cousin’s arranged a betrothal for him to a Bulgarian nobleman’s niece which would strengthen their alliance against the Turks. Torn between his love for Maja & his duty to protect his home, Danilo reluctantly agrees. Before the arrangements can be made, a bitter, epic battle begins at Kosovo which will determine the fate of the Serbian Christians for centuries.

I was thoroughly invested in this sweeping story! Danilo’s & Maja’s romance was fraught with so many obstacles. One of them is a conniving Ottoman spy who’s obsessed with Maja & tries to kidnap & attack her multiple times. Danilo’s betrothal also has a surprising twist & I was hoping beyond hope there’d be a way out. Then there’s the epic battle where the odds are stacked against them. This story had so many ups & downs & yet a hopeful thread of faith is woven throughout. I also loved learning more about the beautiful mosaics Maja creates & gained a new appreciation for this amazing talent.

Highly recommend! To fully appreciate this book, it needs to be read in series order. Sensitive readers should know that while the author makes every effort to minimize details, there are some scenes which may disturb some readers involving assault, historically accurate battle scenes, injury, & deaths. I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & provided voluntarily.

Three years ago, a Serbian warrior saved Maja and her brother from captivity and worse. Since then, she's honed her skills as a mosaicist, learned at her father's knee, and works on mosaics in churches. When travelling to find new work after the completion of a job, she and her brother are attacked and robbed. Days later, near starvation, they're rescued by a group of Serbs, including Danilo, the very warrior who saved them years earlier. As they travel together, first on a diplomatic mission and then returning to his town where Maja hopes to find work in a new church, Maja and Danilo form a fragile bond - only to find, on return home, that Danilo has been promised as bridegroom as part of a marriage alliance. And it's an alliance they desperately need if they are to have any hope of beating off the Turks when they attack in the summer. There is much keeping them apart: this promised marriage, his high position as the zupan's cousin, the anticipated battle - but perhaps most dangerous of all will end up the Turkish warrior who tried to take her three years earlier and has never forgotten her...

A great read, with a perfect blend of history and fiction, including a side of romance. I know little about this time period, so it was interesting to learn more in a way that kept me engaged and seeing the events as real rather than as dry words in a history book. Add in that I got to spend time with some delightful people each doing their best to look out for each other and their nation - plus a villain I could have done without but that he was such an essential part of the story - and it's perfect, particularly given the pleasure of watching Danilo and Maja overcome the odds to end up together, and the delight of seeing previous couples a bit further down the track. There were also some thought-provoking questions raised, directly or indirectly - things like, is it better to do the right thing or the wise thing? or how much would you really give to try to save those you love? All in all, this is a great addition (conclusion?) to the series, though it can be read as a standalone story. It's on the long side, but didn't feel particularly so - and the ending is very satisfying. Recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I love reading historical fiction. It takes me to times and places that I have never personally experienced and gives me insight into how nations have changed over time. Against A Crescent Storm is the third book (and dare I hope there may be more in the future) in author A.L. Sowards Balkan Legends series, and while it can certainly stand alone, if you have the chance, read the previous books to get an even fuller understanding of what the mediaeval times were like in the Balkans. For most of us, Bosnia and Serbia are vague , distant places that we are only familiar with through more modern battles. This series educates the reader to the long history of battles between the members of the Ottoman Empire and the surrounding nations such as Serbia. To help the reader more fully understand the story setting, there is a map provided and an extremely important glossary right at the beginning of the book to introduce to words that likely weren't a part of most people's education.

Many characters from the previous books return in Book 3, but the focus of the story lies with Danilo, his opponent from previous battles Iskandar, and with siblings Maja and Luca, who were briefly introduced in a previous book. They had seen the death of their parents and were trying to eke out a living with skills their father had taught them in the art of mosaics. When set upon by robbers who stole all their money and food, Maja and Luca were facing starvation as well as a severe injury to Luca's leg. When fate brought them another encounter with a group of soldiers from Rivak including Danilo, it looked as if their future might be brighter. It was wonderful to watch the relationships develop between all of those in the entourage. Danilo had lost a wife and baby a year earlier from childbirth and had heard rumors that people thought he was cursed due to a mixed race marriage. He doubted that he would find true happiness again, but over time Maja and he drew closer. Life is never that simple though.

Set in 1389, three years after the battles that led to their freedom from the Ottomans, peace was still not guaranteed. A search was on for support from neighboring areas for allies to help against potential onslaught from the armies of the Sultan. When Danilo and his group are attacked by enemies, including Iskandar, who they believed was living in captivity as a slave, they barely escape with their lives and with the knowledge that Iskander has his mind set on having Maja for himself.

Can they gather enough allies to stave off their enemies? Can they trust everyone in Rivak or will they face betrayals? Will Danilo be forced into a marriage simply to gain allies? What will happen when the call to battle comes? Will Maja find acceptance that allows her to use her talents? And what of Iskandar?

All too soon, the call to battle comes and the enemies face each other on the fields of Kosovo where it seems the advantage lies with the Ottomans. Soward does an incredible job with her research into the weaponry and battle techniques of the time. Although the book is historical fiction rather than fact, she keeps it as factual as is possible given the battle took place centuries ago, and documentation was not as easily kept from those times. The battle feels real and breath taking and when it is done, many will be lost or maimed. War seldom leaves true winners. But what of Danilo and Maja? Will they survive? Will they be free to marry? Has the so-called curse been lifted from Danilo? Read the book to find out all the answers.

I loved learning about mosaics while reading this novel and inspired by Maja, I'm hoping to make my own small mosaic decoration. Stories that inspire learning are so good!

This is a book that not only tells a story but is also filled with inspiration and hope. It is a story of strong friendships and the love of extended family.. There are too many quotes to put in this review, but there were many that felt like they were speaking directly to me. I've loved all the books that I've read by A.L. Sowards, but this series is particularly outstanding and I believe would be of interest to all those who love historical fiction that rings true and gives greater understanding to how the battles of the past can have future consequences.

Many thanks to #ShelterMountainPublishing and author #ALSowards for giving me a complimentary copy of this novel. All opinions are my own honest ones.

Incredible and epic!
I have loved this series and this third installment was everything I could want! My only complaint is I just want more of this series!
Danilo has been one of my very favorite characters ever since we met him as a young boy in book one. He’s fiercely loyal as well as fiercely protective of those he loves. I was heartbroken to know the pain Danilo had gone through the last few years since we last saw him.
I loved how he and Maia have that instant emotional pull between them! The way you can feel the light and joy coming back to Danilo made me so happy, and really shows how well this book is written.
Danilo’s character arc was so powerful as well, with the constant struggle between duty and desire. I also thought the dynamic between his desire to always be there and do why Ivan needed him to do versus what he wanted with Maja was so incredibly powerful. The friendship, brotherhood truly, between him and Ivan has and still is one of my very favorite things about this series. The way Ivan refused to give Danilo to do anything, even when it would make life easier for Ivan and the people of Sivi Gora really showed how much he loved Danilo as his brother. And the sweet way both Ivan and Helena teased Danilo about Maja was so sweet!

Maja was a sweetheart. I loved learning more about the artistry in that time, and how much it really was a craft and trade that was learned. I loved the passion that Maja brought to her art, and the way she would think about it and plan for it. She was so brave and my heart hurt knowing how alone she was. She was so protective of Lukas and I loved how he wanted so badly to protect her as well, even though he was so young. The safety she felt with Danilo was precious. I loved how even though he felt so dark and at times hopeless, Maja only ever saw him as a hero. Their love was so strong and the chemistry between them jumped off the page and made this book so very special!

I could honestly go one forever about all the things I love about this book, but I don’t want to give away spoilers! But make sure you add this to your TBR! You can definitely read this as a standalone, but you will enjoy it much more if you have read the other two books because you will understand some of the supporting characters better.

ABSOLUTELY EPIC!!!

When Danilo rescues Maja and her brother, orphans surviving by crafting mosaics, their shared grief and time together traveling blossoms into unexpected love. But with spies, betrayals, and political alliances threatening to tear them apart, Danilo must choose between his heart and his duty. As war looms on the horizon, their fates are intertwined with the struggle that will define the destiny of nations.

What you'll love:
Set in 1300s Balkans
multiple pov
forbidden romance
epic battle scenes
plot twists
heart-racing suspense
friendships and loyalty
duty vs desire
swoony romance
Most perfect ending ever!!!

This series needs made into movies! The vivid setting, rich historical details, masterful storytelling, and captivating romance were so perfectly blended! I was drawn into the story from the first chapter and completely swept away by the love, loss and courage woven into every page of the story.

Danilo is a warrior but also a man of integrity, of faith, of compassion. I've loved his friendship with Ivan throughout this series and have long wondered what kind of woman would capture his heart. Maja is strong, resilient, and full of grace. It is no wonder that that these two souls find their way to each other! Their journey is not easy, but their faith and courage shine through every trial. They are the kind of characters that stay with you long after the final page, reminding you to love deeply and live honorably.

As the final book in the series, this one ties everything together so beautifully! I highly recommend reading the books in order to fully appreciate the character's growth and the sweeping historical storyline. The research and attention to detail in this series is extraordinary and opened my eyes to a chapter of history I knew little about.

If you enjoy epic historical fiction, stories of faith, and romances that feel both tender and timeless, this series deserves a spot on your shelf! All the stars and all the love to this incredible story!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

“When storm clouds gather, sometimes there is comfort in seeing a bit of sunlight shining on a friend. And there is no one I would wish sunshine on as much as I would wish it on you. Whether or not I return, I want you to be happy.”

This fantastic conclusion to the Balkan Legends series has epic battles, hard fought love, incredible characters, and beautiful faith elements. The writing draws you completely into the story. You can’t help but feel all that the characters are feeling.

Danilo! I was so happy to read his story. Danilo is strong and protective, a brave warrior, full of faith, and devoted to his family. I loved his interactions with his family from his mother all the way down to his little “niece”. His strength and courage to fight through wounds, pain, and loss was amazing. I loved his determination to keep Maja safe. He was caught between his duty and desire and the conflict was palpable. Maja is brave and strong. I enjoyed learning about the artistry of a mosaicist. I was amazed by her bravery and fight through all of the twists and danger in her path. I loved Danilo and Maja together. Their’s was a beautiful, sweet love that faced trials and danger but came out stronger on the other side. I LOVED the epilogue, seeing the happily ever afters. I loved seeing all the characters from Rivak (and her allies) and Sivi Gora. I might have shed a few tears over some of the battle losses.

A few more quotes:
“Why is someone as marvelous as you kissing someone like me?” “You asked me to, remember? And because you have become very dear to me over the last fortnight. . . You’ve reminded me of what joy feels like.”

“Everything seemed so bleak for so long. I didn’t know if the pain would ever end, if it would ever soften enough to let in happiness or love. Then I met you, and it was like the coming of spring after a long winter.”

“I do not think I would use the term common to describe someone who’s rescued herself from a Turkish tent, defended me with a spear, and turned an ordinary wall into a field of glittering grass.”

I do not know where to start in writing a review for this book and this series. I feel like I have to summarize a masters level class in a paragraph or 2.

Epic. Traumatic. Hopeful. Historical. Legendary. Conspiratorial. Death. Faith. Love. Fear. Intense. War.

That's the range of emotions I felt even in the last 3 chapters. If you love a book with intense historical information, a love story that defies all odds, loyalty to family and country, adventures that are unfathomable, friendship that runs as deep as family, beauty and healing, and intense war scenes- you have found a series to keep you hpapy. This is the 3rd book in the Balkan Legends series and you do want to read all and in order. They build on each other, transport you back to the 1300's, and make you feel every worry and wonder of war.

"Long ago her father had told her that life was like a great mosaic and each experience a tessera of glass or marble, limestone or ceramic. Some experiences were vibrant, others pale. Some were luminous, other dull. Some were light others dark, but they all fit together to form a whole."

"A mosaic is made of hundreds of pieces of shattered rock and glass. Somehow, it is still beautiful."

A warrior and a mosaicist are not on the same social level, but love doesn't listen to or adhere to that. He is torn between doing what his heart desires or doing what is best for his family and his people. Love or loyalty? She has an artisits soul- seeing the world in a way that makes everything more vibrant. She has nothing to offer but her heart, devotion and a listening ear.

"He was like the mortar of mosaic, holding together all the pieces of her soul. He was also the sunshine, enhancing her strengths with his warmth and light."

The beauty and descriptions of the mosaics tied with the harshness of war are just beautiful. The war scenes are rough- as war is. The balance is done well.

Thank you to Shadow Mountain for the advanced copy of the book for my thoughts.

Set in the Balkans in the late 1300s, Against a Crescent Storm continues the story of three cousins in their fight against the Ottoman dynasty. This is the third book in the series and could possibly be read alone, but I would advise reading the first two to get the full backstory. With obvious impeccable research and rich historical detail, this tale enriched my knowledge of the area and this slice of history. The battles between the different ethnic groups for lands and power were fierce and plentiful and made for some intense and riveting reading.

“But we cannot see the future. It would be foolish not to enjoy the moments when everything seems well. It would be equally foolish to expect the good moments to last forever.”

Sowards has a unique ability to make characters come alive on the page, and I enjoyed this story starring warrior Danilo and Maja, a mosaic creator. It was entertaining to see their relationship grow and change as they got to know each other.

“The more they treated him like a hero, the more he wanted to be heroic.”

“You know, a mosaic is made up of hundreds of shattered pieces of rock and glass. Somehow, it’s still beautiful.”

This wasn’t an easy book to read with war scenes, killing, and other atrocities, but the author did a great job of depicting the realities of the times while tempering them for the reader. I appreciated the maps, glossary, and character list in the front of the book, as well as the author’s notes in the back. They added much information and made it easier to keep track of the numerous characters.

With lots of twists and turns, danger, suspense, and a lovely dose of romance, this novel is a journey of courage, forgiveness, hope, and the healing only God can provide. 4.5 stars

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Shadow Mountain. All opinions are my own.

Against a crescent storm is #3 in the Balkans Legend series. This book follows Danilo, a Serb warrior, and Maja, an orphaned mosaicist.

Danilo seems to be fighting for freedom his entire life. As soon as he is free, he is fighting another battle to remain so. His valor in war somehow doesn’t harden him to the goodness in life and people. His heart is healed from some of the pains of life when he meets Maja.

Maja was saved by Danilo, during the battle that took the lives of her parents. Forever a hero in her mind, she is surprised when he happens upon her when she needs saving a second time. I loved their relationship!

This book was action packed. Nonstop. I feel like my husband would love it for that reason. Hahaha. It also had humanity, deep relationships, and the hope of a people that kept me invested in the story.

I loved the resilience of the characters. I loved the power goodness. I loved that when things got rough I knew I could count on this author to leave the story in a place that would make me content. No need to check on the characters at the end for me.

This book was beautifully written and such a great addition to this series.

I listened to the audio version of this book. At first I wasn’t so sure the voice matched the character, but then it grew on me. I enjoyed the way words were pronounced (I never would have gotten it right on my own) and the accents used. I eventually became so immersed in the story that I didn’t notice the voice at all. I think that’s the point of a narrator- to simply share the story well enough that the listener becomes so caught up in the story that they aren’t thinking about anything else.

Content: lots of violence as you would expect in a war book. If you have specific questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
