I believe this book is essential reading for any Pākehā New Zealanders. It is thought provoking and relevant. I found the chapter by Richard Shaw both eye opening & sobering. Highly recommended.
For an older pakeha who was not politically aware during her younger life, this was a hard read. Having very little experience of the issues discussed several articles were over my head (I was overseas during the Springbok tour and missed the protests and this was a turning point for several contributors). There were some standouts that really resonated with me- Denis O’Reilly, elder of Black Power, and Richard Shaw who discovered that his ancestor had taken part in The Plunder of Parihaka. It has certainly made me think, and want to read more eg a real history of Aotearoa.
