Tom Bradley, recovering from a stroke, discovers a new, inner self who can also hear the thoughts of others in close proximity. In the park where he exercises daily, he overhears a robbery plot and reports it to the police. The plotters are arrested and the drug gang’s profits, over two hundred thousand pounds, are impounded. The gang’s boss, K, threatens to snatch Tom’s wife, if Tom does not return the cash and Tricia is kidnapped as insurance. The villain escapes with the cash when the police botch an arrest attempt without identifying Tricia’s location. He flees to France but is arrested at the Channel Tunnel and returned into police custody, without the cash. Tom is allowed to interrogate K and uncovers the whereabouts of the missing cash. He uses a mind probe to reveal Tricia’s location, except, Tricia has already been moved to another site. Unexpected help comes to aid Tom’s search, but a gunshot casualty mars the rescue attempt. The captured shooter is interrogated by Tom’s mind probe to reveal where Tricia is being held. Can he recover the love of his life and the missing cash?
Wallace Briggs (1943 – present). Happily married to Pat in 1964, who I first met at the age of eleven. We celebrated our Diamond Anniversary in Sept 2024. Early years were lived in and around Durham never living more than 5ml distance from the Cathedral City. Married in 1964, Pat and I spent many happy years in the North East of England before employment almost took us off to emigrate to South Africa. But plans were changed in the final weeks and the company moved the family Sussex. After more than twenty years in Sussex, then Hampshire, employment was again responsible for the move to beautiful rural Lancashire, where we still reside. I am now retired from a long career in sales and marketing of technical products in the UK and international markets. Jimmy Crikey was born one rainy afternoon around over forty years ago, during a family holiday in Great Yarmouth, to entertain my son and his new-found friends for an hour or so. The story expanded over the following showery afternoons in the cramped confines of a beach tent, and more and more adventures were required to keep the children entertained. The wonderment on the face of children obviously enjoying my stories was all the inspiration I needed to continue my journey as an author. I look forward to sharing the adventures of Jimmy Crikey with a wider audience in the hope that they will bring a sense of wonder and enjoyment to another generation.
This book was a complete surprise in the best way possible. From the opening pages, Tom Bradley’s journey pulled me in. The concept of a man recovering from a stroke and discovering a strange new ability to hear the thoughts of those around him is both intriguing and handled in a believable, grounded way.
The pacing is excellent. Things escalate quickly after Tom accidentally overhears a robbery plot and sets a chain of events in motion that puts his wife, Tricia, in serious danger. The tension never lets up from the failed police sting to the chilling mind probe interrogations and the race across borders to stop a dangerous gang leader known only as “K.”
What I really loved was how the story blended a crime thriller with a light supernatural edge. The mind-reading aspect adds a unique layer, but it’s not overused it’s just enough to raise the stakes and make Tom’s character arc even more compelling. His emotional drive to rescue Tricia felt authentic, and I was really invested in their relationship throughout the chaos.
There are some dark moments, including a shocking injury during a rescue attempt, but they serve the story and raise the emotional tension. Even when things get intense, the writing remains sharp, clear, and well-paced.
If you enjoy thrillers with clever twists, emotional depth, and just a touch of the paranormal, this one is well worth the read. A memorable, high-stakes story that had me turning pages late into the night.
On the Edge by Wallace E. Briggs is a gripping blend of crime, suspense, and the supernatural that had me hooked from the very first page. Tom Bradley’s journey, from a stroke survivor finding unexpected inner strength to a man thrust into the heart of a deadly gang war, is both inspiring and thrilling. The author does a fantastic job of balancing Tom’s vulnerability with his newfound gift of mind reading, making him a protagonist you truly want to root for.
The tension builds steadily as Tom becomes entangled in a dangerous robbery plot that quickly escalates into threats against his wife, Tricia. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and Briggs keeps readers on edge with unexpected twists, botched police operations, and Tom’s desperate search for the woman he loves. The use of Tom’s psychic abilities adds a fresh layer to the story, pushing it beyond a standard crime thriller into something uniquely compelling.
What I enjoyed most was how the novel weaves action with emotional depth. It’s not just about chasing villains or recovering stolen money, it’s about loyalty, resilience, and the power of love when everything seems lost. By the final pages, I was completely invested in Tom’s fate, and the story left me both satisfied and eager to see what else Briggs might write. Fans of supernatural thrillers and high stakes mysteries will find On the Edge a rewarding, edge-of-your-seat read.
In On the Edge, Wallace E. Briggs crafts a tightly wound psychological thriller that seamlessly intertwines suspense, emotion, and a hint of the paranormal. The novel follows Tom Bradley, a man rebuilding his life after a stroke, who discovers that his recovery has left him with a rare ability to sense the thoughts of others. What begins as a quiet exploration of his new awareness quickly escalates into a dangerous conflict with a criminal network, forcing Tom to navigate both his inner turmoil and an external world filled with threat and uncertainty.
Briggs’s writing shines most in the human moments: Tom’s vulnerability, his unrelenting devotion to Tricia, and the quiet strength that builds with every setback. The mind-probing element adds an imaginative layer, but it’s grounded in emotional truth. The pacing is steady, allowing readers to absorb both the psychological tension and the characters' heartfelt connection.
There’s an admirable balance between realism and imagination here. The author never loses sight of the emotional stakes, even as the plot tightens and the suspense peaks. By the end, you’re not just hoping Tom succeeds, you feel invested in his redemption and the fragile love he’s fighting to claim.
A compelling and emotionally intelligent thriller that stands out for its depth, sincerity, and heart. Readers looking for more than a quick adrenaline rush will find something genuinely memorable here.
Recovering from a stroke is no easy task. From relearning basic tasks to retraining your body to complete once mastered skills, Thomas is reliant on his wife of many decades, Trish, to carry him through. Walking the local park each day, Tom suddenly returns home to greatly improved abilities. From the outside he looks back to his pre-stroke self, but on the inside, he’s gained another voice that is giving him abilities beyond his wildest dreams.
With his newfound talent for reading other people’s thoughts, during his daily walk Tom overhears the plans for a bank heist. Alerting the police, Tom is suddenly targeted as the robbers’ agenda is thwarted. Taking his kind, patient, and stressed wife as hostage, Tom has no choice but to get further involved if he’s to save Trish’s life.
Police, shop owners, and local community members all play an intricate role in author Wallace Briggs’ latest novel. Stepping into metaphysical fiction, “On the Edge” introduces supernatural abilities as strokes, stealing, and stalking rise to the forefront. Briggs continues to show off his writing repertoire as he delivers an action packed, vigilant, chase to the finish line.
“On the Edge” transforms stroke recovery into a superpower as Tom must use his newfound powers to save his wife.
It started out innocently enough, just a simple exercise jog in the park. Which is Tom’s daily routine to aid in his recovery from a stroke. Little did he know that his stroke had unlocked a hidden powerful ability to hear others' thoughts. He stumbled upon something he never could have anticipated. What may have seemed like an intrusion of other’s privacy turns into a crime.
There's consequences for having this new found power. This story takes a turn and will keep you flipping the pages to find out what’s going to happen next. Tom is faced with making decisions to keep his wife safe. Now he’s on a mission to put an end to the bank crime and bring his wife home safely.
One the Edge is a relatively short book with a good plot. I love the personal talks, interactions, and relationship in Tom’s and Tricia’s marriage. Which gives the story warmth and family dedication despite the robbery involved. It’s a good read and will keep you interested until the story ends.
This story pulled me in from the first page. Watching Tom fight his way back from a stroke while discovering his strange new ability felt raw and real I could almost feel his confusion and courage myself. The moment he overheard that robbery plot, I knew I was in for a ride, but I didn’t expect the emotional depth that followed.
What really hit me was how much heart this book has. It’s not just a crime thriller it’s about love, resilience, and how far someone will go for the person they can’t live without. The suspense had me turning pages fast, but it was Tom’s determination to save Tricia that truly stayed with me.
Beautifully written, emotionally charged, and impossible to forget. This book deserves every one of its five stars.

This book had me completely absorbed from start to finish. Tom’s recovery, his strange new gift, and the danger that follows felt so real that I couldn’t help but root for him. I loved how the author balanced the tension of the crime plot with the emotional pull of Tom’s love for Tricia it gave the story real depth.
Every chapter carried a mix of fear, hope, and determination. The way Tom uses his ability, not for power but to protect the woman he loves, was beautiful to read. By the end, I was both breathless and moved.
It’s the kind of story that lingers long after you finish it intense, emotional, and full of heart.
This book pulled me in deeper than I expected. Tom’s recovery after his stroke and the strange gift he gains were written with so much honesty and emotion that I felt every struggle with him. What stood out most to me was how human this story felt. Even with the mind-reading element, it never lost touch with real emotion love, fear, and determination. The tension builds perfectly, and the ending left me with a lump in my throat.
It’s a rare story that mixes suspense and heart this beautifully. A definite five-star read.
From the very first page, I knew this book was something special. Tom’s journey from recovery to danger felt so genuine that I found myself completely lost in his world. The way his strange new ability ties into the suspense kept me turning pages, but it was his love for Tricia that really hit me hardest.
Every scene carried emotion fear, hope, heartbreak, and courage. I could feel his desperation and his determination not to give up, no matter how impossible things seemed. The ending left me thinking about what true love and strength really mean.
Beautifully written and full of heart this one deserves every star.
This story had everything I love in a thriller — a unique main character, a dangerous enemy, and real emotional stakes. Tom’s recovery from a stroke and discovery of his new ability to hear thoughts made him fascinating. His determination to save his wife, despite overwhelming odds, was inspiring and kept me glued to the page. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys emotional and intense thrillers.
Briggs doesn't shy away from showing how frightening, frustrating, and isolating stroke recovery can be. But he goes further, delving into the mind’s strange capabilities. The relationship between Tom and his mysterious inner companion is compelling and often darkly funny. The book also confronts ethical dilemmas, especially when Tom begins to influence others’ thoughts. A slow burn that builds to something profound.
This story grabbed my heart from the very first page. Watching Tom struggle through recovery only to discover a gift that blurs the line between mind and miracle was honestly moving. I felt his fear, his love, his quiet determination to save Tricia even when everything seemed to fall apart. The story isn’t just about danger or crime it’s about the power of love and resilience when the world feels impossible. Beautifully human and surprisingly tender beneath the tension.
I didn’t expect to feel so much reading this book. Beneath the thriller elements, there’s this deep emotional pulse a man who’s lost so much yet keeps fighting for the one person who matters most. The mind-probing scenes were fascinating, but what really stayed with me was Tom’s heart his devotion, his pain, his courage. It’s the kind of story that reminds you love can survive even the darkest chaos.
On the Edge is a captivating read! The story draws you in immediately, and the tension and suspense keep you hooked until the very end. Your characters are vivid and relatable, and the challenges they face highlight courage, determination, and growth. I especially enjoyed the way you balance action with heartfelt moments, making the adventure both exciting and meaningful.
It’s a powerful story that will resonate with readers and leave a lasting impression.
This novel is a gripping blend of crime thriller and speculative fiction that kept me turning the pages from start to finish. The story centers on Tom Bradley, a man recovering from a stroke who discovers he has developed an extraordinary ability to hear the thoughts of people nearby. What starts as a strange new talent soon plunges him into a high-stakes confrontation with a dangerous drug gang.
The mix of suspense, action, and a touch of the supernatural worked really well for me. Tom’s “mind probe” ability was such a unique twist — it added a whole new layer to the story and made the investigation scenes especially gripping. I loved that the stakes kept getting higher and that Tom, despite his own challenges, never gave up.
I picked up this book out of curiosity and ended up completely hooked. The story of Tom Bradley, a man recovering from a stroke who suddenly gains the ability to hear others' thoughts, was unlike anything I’ve read before. What starts as a personal journey quickly spirals into a tense, unpredictable thriller involving drug gangs, a kidnapping, and a desperate race to save his wife.
What I really appreciated was how real Tom felt — a man thrown into extraordinary circumstances, still dealing with the aftermath of a stroke, yet determined to fight for the woman he loves. The story blends action, suspense, and emotional depth in a way that kept me turning the pages well into the night.
Wallace Briggs offers a compelling look into post-stroke recovery that evolves into a thrilling journey of self-discovery, laced with mystery and a hint of the supernatural. As Tom gains strange mental powers, his internal voice becomes a fascinating character of its own. This book is a heartfelt exploration of resilience that quickly turns into a gripping psychological adventure.
Forget everything you thought you knew about stroke recovery. On the Edge starts grounded in a personal, emotional reality and suddenly veers into speculative fiction territory, challenging the reader to question what’s real. With humor, suspense, and emotional depth, this is a stroke story like no other.
This is not just a story of survival; it’s a story of evolution. As Tom navigates his recovery, his mental strength grows—literally. The development of his strange telepathic abilities forces him into situations far beyond ordinary life. It’s a beautiful balance of the ordinary and the extraordinary.
I picked this up thinking it would be a typical story of physical recovery, but it’s so much more. There’s philosophical depth and a fascinating question at the core: what if a stroke unlocked dormant powers of the mind? The writing is honest, and Tom’s relationship with his wife, Tricia, adds warmth and realism. Highly recommend to readers who enjoy stories of personal triumph with a twist.
Tom’s post-stroke experience isn’t just physical—it’s metaphysical. The inner voice that helps (and sometimes questions) him makes this a fascinating read. I loved the interplay between vulnerability and power, confusion and insight. There’s also a surprising thriller subplot involving a bank robbery and organized crime that adds a whole new dimension. A genre-defying triumph!
This was not what I expected—and I mean that in the best way. Tom’s stroke opens a gateway to unexplored parts of his mind, which he must navigate while also dealing with criminals, financial pressures, and love. The tone is reflective and intimate, with moments of suspense and danger. A touching story with supernatural flair.
Wallace E Briggs combines personal introspection with a surprisingly intense plot. The first-person narration pulls you deep into Tom’s struggle—and then astonishes you as he begins to hear thoughts and influence others. The moral and spiritual implications are handled thoughtfully. A moving, unique book about inner and outer strength.
What a gripping and unexpected read! On the Edge is proof that independent authors like Wallace E. Briggs can tell stories that keep you turning pages late into the night. The twists were sharp, the characters believable, and the emotional depth gave it more weight than a typical thriller. I really hope more readers discover this gem it deserves far more attention.
More Than a Survivor’s Story Briggs turns a medical crisis into a meditation on life. The pacing, structure, and clarity make it easy to read, but what lingers is his philosophical voice. He asks the big questions what matters, what lasts, what love really means when time stops. A rewarding read for anyone interested in the psychology of healing.
Courage Written in Real Time I felt as if I were sitting beside the author through each stage of his ordeal. His vivid recollections of hospital corridors, family conversations, and quiet inner battles give the story cinematic depth. It’s a lesson in patience and self-belief, told without pity or exaggeration.
A Testament to the Human Spirit By the end, I wasn’t reading about one man’s stroke; I was reading about all of us how fragile and resilient we can be. On the Edge of a Stroke is honest, uplifting, and quietly transformative. Highly recommended for readers who crave authenticity and courage in equal measure.
