Murder Medic #1

Murder Medic 1: A Demonic Healer LitRPG

Rate this book
Zoe died, got better, and woke up in a new world . . . with a stat system. That's neat, but where is her S-Tier cheat power?

As a newly minted healer, Zoe doesn't need a unique ability to take on murderous cultists, an equally murderous paladin, and the weather. She'd certainly like one, though. It's a fast-paced, violent world, filled with undead ghouls, sprawling dungeons, and far too many scheming nobles, all of whom want a piece of her. A healer is a valuable asset—and becoming a demon and blood magic user only ups the ante.

But when life doesn't give you a cheat power, you figure out how to take it. And Zoe's new demon side reveals the first step to do just

Level up. Violently.

Mind numbingly boring. This is mostly an overly complex power system with flat, bland characters. They are meant to be layered and secretive, but they are lacking in any personality. The pacing is horrendous, and the story doesn't get going until about eighty percent in. This had some solid ideas that were ruined by terrible writing choices.

I was excited about this story since I feel like the LitRPG genre lacks female main characters.
This story follows Zoe who has awoke from her medically induced coma in a strange place and stumbles upon a strange cultist ritual. This ritual summons a demon and Zoe intercepts this ritual and summons the demon herself. That’s how the story kicks off. Now what happens next is a bunch of traveling and yep… The plot falls off majorly, my main thought while listening to this was “So, what is the goal here” I never understood what any character wanted to do, they were just doing things. The characters were also quite flat to me, they had no personality.

There was a part, where Zoe, passes out in front of group of random people. When she comes to her first thought was comparing her appearance to another woman’s. Then saying she was more attractive due to her being blonde. After this line it went down hill for me.

The narrator really brought this back for me, she had a smooth voice that boosted the story well. This story had a strong premise but i just didn’t fully connect with it. Just okay to me, but I would listen to the next in the series as I do think this has the potential to get better as it felt like we left off at strong place where the plot was coming together.

it was interesting, but it lost the plot in the middle with the whole beheading and prison stuff.

1 part story and 3 parts inner monologue.

Take an interesting premise, in a sometimes fun story,
And ruin it with bad tropes and constant inner monologue.
Want an annoying and insulting sick kick? Check.
A story that doesn’t so much unfold as zigzag around like toddler with a suger rush? Check.
How about an MC that never seems to have any idea what’s going on or what they are doing while simultaneously endlessly talking to themselves about everything but the actual story. Also Check.

It’s like reading a story by a teenage boy with severe ADHD who ran out of meds and decided meth was a good substitute.

Story, story, Squirrel!, story, Shiny Red Bicycle! Story.

So bad it’s almost good.

oh my god , whatever

This book has an interesting description and really squeezes out the emotions..mostly annoyance. The best way of describing what irritated me was the characters lack of human like qualities. Could be AI generated. Bob wakes up with a system and multiple class choices . Bob thinks “hey let’s take a cursory look at this new system thing but I’ll pick a class later despite the ominous messages”..then wanders. Sees evil character (think devil with horns and bodies). Thinks wow he is handsome. Then has crisis and decides to sit with angst. That’s the first 20% of the book….

Very Common

What is there no originality with this genre? Why does everyone have to be some hot headed cussing annoying person with little emotional intelligence? Can we get a competent soft spoken heroine. Or a serious vindictive heroine. Or a cold conniving play women. All the awesome variability of the human condition and authors choose brutish personalities that have been over written in modern fiction. The magic would have been interesting if it wasn’t wailed by a Neanderthal of a MC.

Dumb as rocks

The mc comes over as a smart girl with poor impulse control. Later on she becomes somewhat more ‘dumb as rocks’ which I did not really find consistent, nor did I like it. I hope this is just a temporary phase for her to grow through, as the book itself has quite an interesting storyline.

Every single character in this story lives in unreflective self-inflicted misery.

Thank you NetGalley for the audiobook arc

So I went into this book with high hopes the premise of the book a girl gets Isekai'd into an RPG world. I was excited because I love books like that for example SVSSS, however this book didn't really get going until about 80% of the way through where if I wasn't listening to the audio form of this book I would've DNF it instead of listening fully. The main character can be insufferable at times and the writing is repeating itself a lot. 2 quotes I would like to show this is "She had to kill monsters of the same core type it was obvious the quest said 250 monsters of the same core type." along with "then again a lot of things were unexpected recently that was why Zoe wasn't surprised even though Zoey didn't expect it." like the repeating itself got to be a bit aggravating because I would think my wifi or something was bad but no it was the writing. Along with the writing maybe it was because I was listening to the book but the amount of POV switches would confuse me especially the first time it happened and it kept confusing me throughout the story. Overall even though I know it's going to be a series the plot of this first book was just level up, like she didn't really complete any big major quest and even when I thought it was going to get good of the main bad guy becoming a guard he just threw her in prison like I thought we would get some tension of him having to guard her or slowly manipulate her but no he just threw her in prison. Like I'm sorry but this book does not leave me wanting to read the next book it left me saying finally the book is over. It would've been an even harder read physically. But the premise of the book is good but the execution of the book just wasn't it.

Massive Thanks to NetGalley and RBmedia for an early copy of the audiobook for Murder Medic 1 by E.C. Krueger.

Let me start by saying the narration in this audiobook is absolutely stellar; Jess Young breathes so much life into the story that I’d almost recommend experiencing it in audio format over ebook/print.

Here we follow Zoe, our FMC, who wakes up from a coma only to find herself thrust into a nightmare; she’s in an unfamiliar place, with no idea how she got there; from there, the story takes off with plenty of dark, chaotic energy. Zoe’s voice is engaging, and the tension in certain scenes had me completely hooked; there were moments where I couldn’t stop listening.

That said, the book isn’t without its flaws. Some dialogue felt unnatural, pulling me out of the story at times, and the characters lacked depth, making their motives hard to believe. The pacing also stumbled in places, slowing down when it should have ramped up.

Despite these issues, the strong narration and high stakes premise kept me invested.

A little too murder happy.

I really enjoyed this book—it kept me turning the pages and held my interest the whole way through. The characters are engaging and distinct, with enough personality to make their interactions fun to follow. The story itself has good momentum, and I found myself wanting to know what would happen next.

That said, my biggest issue was with the main character’s moral shift. She starts off with scruples, showing the kind of restraint and humanity that makes a protagonist relatable. But by the end, she seems perfectly fine with mass murder, and the book doesn’t really grapple with that change in a satisfying way. It felt a bit jarring and undermined some of the empathy I had for her earlier on.

Still, this seems to be a recurring problem in a lot of books in this genre—the line between survival and morality blurs, but sometimes too easily. Even with that flaw, I’d say it was an entertaining read and worth picking up if you enjoy dark, morally gray adventures.

Interesting but summary is misleading

So TL;DR I did like this story, as it is well written and the story is interesting. That said, after reading the summary I was expecting the MC to be posing as a healer, quietly living amonst humans all vying for her services. That is not what happens; pretty much all the characters know she is a demon, and the MC makes no effort to conceal herself - at one point she just starts walking around sans disguise and everyone important figures it out right away. Also, her blood magic healing is obvious sus on the rare occasion she heals others, usually she just relies on passive regen and uses blood magic to kill enemies. Not a bad thing, but very different from the implied "Isekai turned demon posing as a human healer in a world where healers are rare".

main character is written as ditzy, not my cup of tea.

This book isn’t bad actually it’s pretty good. There’s good character progression good power progression for the MC. My only issue is that the MC is not the driver of this book. She makes silly no let me correct that, stupid mistakes. The author has written the MC this way, I have no idea why. But if you like a book with a MC that bungle her way through the story is not in charge of our own agency where she drives the narrative then you might like this book if this is your thing, give it a shot. I am curious enough to read the next one, even though I give it three stars. If the MC continues with her air headedness, then I will not continue the series.

ALC 🎧 Book Review 🤍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was my first LitRPG, but it definitely gave me anime vibes- Minus the MC being broken & super OP off jump lol. Although, Zoe does scale quite a bit- She’s still considered lowkey low ranking!!
I loved the sassy system, reminded me so much of the system in “That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime”, except sassier. As for how the system actually works, it was a tad bit complicated keeping up w/ everything, I feel like it’d play out way clearer visually. The characters & story overall could’ve been a bit better as well, but I see the potential 🤌🏽 Jess Young was such a fun narrator!!

What fun! Zoe was frisked away from the medically induced coma to find herself in a sarcophagus under a domed temple while some cultist are in the process of summoning a Demonic presence. But strangely enough Zoe appearance is only coincidental to what the cultist are up to! If that could even be considered a coincidence, ha! My eye. But soon enough Zoe gets caught, and by trying to save herself, she ends up stealing the Demon vessel, ending up with a Demon Core, her Core! But because everyone is now trying to end her, she chooses Healing for her second magical Class! Which really jump starts Zoe remarkable magical journey! It was fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next!

This book is written for dudes who play games with female avatars because they are hot. So if you're a dude looking for simple adventure and hot tits you'll have fun.

If you're a woman or someone who's actually talks to real women this book is not for you. Writing quality is too poor to excuse bad characterisation of female lead. This author writes women badly not because he's misogynist but because he can't write in general. Women were just unlucky to be his subject.

Love the goofy nature of the book's tone and how Zoe seems to take her isekai in stride. After reading so many isekai webtoons/webnovels it feels strange reading one from a Western style, but I had a fun time following through Zoe's stat farming and meeting the recurring cast of characters.

For the love of god, PLEASE STOP HAVING a FULL PAGE OF THINKING BETWEEN TWO LINE OF DIALOGUES OR IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT.

This book has Some good ideas but they are lost in the middle of a sea frustrating stuff that make finishing this book a chore. With a little bit of guidance and some refining this book could be good

Worth it

Beyond the issue of formatting, namely the bold italics that follows the name of a skill, the plot, characters, dialogue and story were highly entertaining. Definitely worth the read.

A hell of a ride

As the title says, this book was a hell of a ride. Lots of action, well-defined characters, and lots of humor. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up.

Highly recommended.

A bunch of men want to use a woman. And book 2 will have the same plot. It’s not bad, there just wasn’t a wow factor that kept my attention. I think I’ll eventually continue the story but just not right now. I do hope the MC has a bit more backbone in book 2

Nope.

I didn't make it far. Hate the writing style. Nothing was happening, besides some internal monologue by the main character, some weird descriptions of surroundings, and some class choices. 7% and nothing interesting has happened.

Thank you so much to RBMedia and NetGalley for this audiobook of Murder Medic 1.

I enjoyed the concept of this book, but I feel like it got very overwhelming with all of the stats. It was hard to keep track of what was happening and I felt a lot like Zoe, I had no idea what was going on. I personally think it would be much more enjoyable as a physical book.

I did enjoy Zoe and her inner monologue. There was a good mix of humour and darkness. I felt like the narrator captured her personality very well.

I want to give this one another try as a physical book and hopefully I will enjoy it more. I definitely think if you like dark humour and LitRPG, you will likely enjoy this one.
