In the glittering era of the Gilded Age, the heirs of Philadelphia’s Denwall Department Stores navigate family expectations, relentless ambition, and unexpected love.

William Walraven’s picture perfect life is turned upside down when his fiancée jilts him for an English aristocrat and his father refuses to name him as his successor. To prove he’s worthy of leading Denwall Department Stores, Will must open their first New York store under budget and before the Christmas shopping season. Overwhelmed by disappointment and a nearly impossible deadline, Will has no time for distractions—especially not the captivating bookseller he saves from being crushed by a beer wagon.

Ivy King and her aging grandmother are barely keeping their struggling bookshop afloat. Though drawn to the charming, enigmatic man who saved her life, Ivy has no illusions about her place in the world. It certainly isn’t beside a department store heir whose dazzling emporium threatens to close her family’s business.

Brought together in the wake of an attack on Will’s brother, Will and Ivy find themselves at a crossroads—torn between the expectations that define them and a future neither expected.

Perfect is a clean, wholesome historical romance featuring opposites-attract tension, class differences, a touch of mystery and humor, and an inspirational journey of faith and love.

At the age of thirteen, Kimberly Keagan discovered romance novels. Whenever possible, she ignored her chores in favor of a book she couldn't put down. In time, she earned a degree in accounting and enjoyed a brief career in investor relations, writing financial reports and press releases—terrific jobs, but not very romantic. By God's grace, she married her own handsome hero and raised two wonderful children. Now, she is following her long-held dream of penning historical romance. Her debut novel releases in 2025.

I love historical fiction books, and I adore audiobooks, so I was so looking forward to this one.

To start with, the narrator did a beautiful job with the reading. I loved listening to her.

As much as I wanted to love this one, it fell a little short for me, though if you enjoyed the movie You've Got Mail, you may really like this book.

While I did like the movie, with the exception of letters, the book was nearly a copy of it, making it pretty predictable.

I did, however, appreciate the difference toward the end of the book (no, I won't tell you what that was 😉).

Give the book a try and see what you think.

“Remember, you’re a work of God’s hands. Perfect, just as you are.”- Gran

I think this may be a message every person needs not only to hear, but to assimilate deep in their heart. So many of us feel lacking in some way or another. Ivy King, Kimberly Keagan’s heroine, lacks in many ways. She has a physical disability. She is a lowly shop girl, not of the upper society that William Walraven belongs to. This is important in a time known as the Gilded Age, when old money means everything. I was so saddened to see how far some would take the importance of societal standing, at great cost to themselves or others.

Gran is such an encouraging, wise character, even if she can tend to be a matchmaker. She has to be my fave supporting character. Another character’s behavior arc really surprised me.

After a chance meeting, Will and Ivy meet again and begin to spend time together, even though they realize their attraction would be a forbidden romance. Will sees the notice in Ivy’s small bookstore that encourages small businesses to fight against large department stores. Afraid that Ivy will reject him if she realizes his purpose in being in NYC, he simply tells her that he and his brother Bert are there on business. What will happen when the full truth is revealed? Will both Ivy and Will endure a second case of shattered hearts?

Will’s father is spectacularly hard to please. One of my fave moments of the book happens when Will worries about his father’s heart when Charles finds out Will’s true desires. Bert informs Will, “You give yourself too much credit. God is in control of that situation, not you.” Will Will’s family be able to force him into their expectations?

A very satisfying debut novel from Keagan.

I received a copy of the book from JustRead Tours. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“We must strive to align our actions with the higher moral principles that God has set before us. This requires honesty, integrity, and the courage to face the truth, even when it is uncomfortable.”

“Oh, dear girl, you’re more than your boots or those practical dresses you wear.”

“I’ll grant that you may not have lied outright, but you purposefully hid the truth. It was a lie of omission.”

“Here he was, trying to prove himself worthy of his inheritance, and instead, he’d managed to alienate the one person—the one woman—who’d made him feel like more than just his father’s son.”

I found this book the perfect kickoff for a series starter, and look forward to reading more books by this talented author! It takes a talented romance author to keep her readers entertained, since a good romance always has a happy ending- you know you have to have a good journey to reach the ending, or the readers won’t want to stick with you through the story, but Kimberly Keagan definitely delivered a winning story!
Both Ivy & Will are great characters. Ivy loves her family & works hard to help support her and her Gran, while running the shop that she loves. Will is also hardworking, and wants so much to gain his father’s approval (a difficult- if not impossible- task). Right from the start, there are sparks between them- something Will’s brother picks up on, simply by hearing Will talk about Ivy. The attraction is strong and easily apparent to both of their families when they see them together, and Will’s brother and Ivy’s aunt obviously set about to do what they can to push them together at every opportunity possible. Of course, when Will’s true reason for being in town is revealed, it creates friction that may be difficult to overcome. Especially as Will struggles to please his father and achieve his own personal goals/dreams, while also realizing he’s developing some new dreams for the future.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romances. You won’t be disappointed, and you just may find a new author to add to your list if favorite authors, as I did!

William strives to be exactly what his father wants. He wants to take on a bigger role in his family's department store business. Ivy and her grandmother are struggling to keep their family's small bookstore going after the unexpected deaths of her parents.

William is a driven young man but you get the sense he hasn't really thought things out for himself. I liked his ambition but felt sorry for him being in his father's shadow. His brother has a better life balance and sees what William is missing.

Ivy is a sweet, smart, young woman that cares deeply for those around her and works to overcome her handicap. She doesn't want charity but is also strong enough to push the boundaries of her time. She and her grandmother are the owners of the store but other local businessmen don't want to include them in business discussion because they are females. Ivy is assertive and with William's help is allowed in the meeting.

The two are from different worlds but each offers the other that missing piece of themselves.

The historic details of the Gilded Age in New York City in 1895 made the story come alive. The descriptions of the backdrop of Dewall's large department store and how it affected the smaller stores created many interesting details that kept my attention.

For a debut novel, the author did an excellent job of creating characters I could relate to and believe in. Ivy is stubborn and determined, with integrity, trust, and faith in God. She runs a bookstore with her grandmother and Will, who is trying to fill his father's shoes but finds that there might be a better way. Can they create something between them despite coming from two different worlds?

The storyline has heartache, deception, danger, heroism, and many sweet moments—a budding love against all odds. The ending wrapped up everything nicely. Highly recommended.

Perfect is such a cute Gilded Age romance. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the two main characters and watching their distinctive relationship develop at a natural, satisfying pace.

As a book lover, stories with a bookstore setting always captures my attention, and the cozy family-run shop in this book made it even more appealing. I found myself rooting for Ivy, understanding her challenges, and was equally moved by William’s determination and sincerity. The dynamic between a wealthy family and a hardworking woman striving to keep her business going added depth to the storyline and I loved the gentle, sweet romance that blossomed between Ivy and William.

The narrator’s delivery truly impressed me—her voice is pleasant and engaging, adding an enjoyable rhythm and tone to the story. With its themes of family, faith, and a wholesome opposites-attract romance, this audiobook is delightful, memorable, and satisfying.

"And like a candle’s flame extinguished in one short breath, Will’s plans turned to smoke. No perfect wife. No perfect life."

Appearances mattered to the Walravens. At least to some of them. William knows that he needs to make a good impression on his father if he is too ever lead the Denwall Department Stores. Opening the New York store under budget will go a long way.  Will must open their first New York store without any mishaps.

Ivy King is trying to help her grandmother keep their family bookstore going. A big challenge in New York City. When she finds out that a department store with a book section is going to open soon, she is concerned. And when her new friend, William, hides the fact that he is connected to the store, her worry turns to anger.  The two of them might be from different backgrounds, but possibly they have more in common than they realize. Can their relationship survive?

This is a wonderful Gilded Age novel. The setting was interesting and the storyline was enjoyable. The plot even has a bit of a mystery. I highly recommend the book, and I plan to read the second one in the series.

I listened to the book as a part of a book tour.  I thought the narrator did a great job. I wanted to review this book. All opinions are my own.

Perfect is the first book in the Hearts On Display historical romance series by Kimberly Keegan it’s time for William Walraven’s dad to retire and hopefully William will take over on the same night he announces his engagement only to learn one his father isn’t naming him as his successor but sending him to New York to open up a new store too his fiancé is on her way to England in hopes of marrying a titled gentleman. William isn’t as sad as one would think he is, about his fiancé. So off to New York he and his brother goes. On the first day while trying to get through those protesting the new store that a beautiful woman falls into his arms her name is Ivy King and she owns a bookstore a couple of blocks down. they will eventually see each other again but she thinks he was at the protest and doesn’t know he is actually the one running the new department store but when she finds out it will just be the first of many trials this faded couple will have to go through. I really loved this book and found it so very interesting. Romance books can be tricky because we know how it’s going to end so if the journey isn’t interesting we could shut the book and no they ended up happily ever after but as for Perfect I started it and didn’t stop until it was over. I cannot wait to read more by Kimberly Keegan she is definitely an author I’m going to be looking forward to and ask for this book I definitely highly recommend it. #BookSirens, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview,#KimberlyKeegan, #Perfect, #HeartsOnDisplay,

This is "You've Got Mail" Meets the Masterpiece Theater TV show, "The Paradise".
A local shop girl meets a rich man who is building a department store in town. He doesn't tell her (of course). While he tries to ignore his attraction, he can't stop thinking about her. Having been burned by a past relationship, Ivy is in her, 'I don't need no man' era (something that I'm not a big fan of, to be honest), but finds herself equally attracted to Will. Once the secret is out, will their relationship make it?!
The premise is great, and I love the historical setting. I love the bicycles, the dresses, the plays they attend. These make for a great setting!
Something, however, slowed down the writing for me. Sometimes the dialogue felt a little unnatural, or a character felt as if they went up and down like a see saw in their arc. Sometimes I thought things were repeated too often. None of these things were done horribly, but I just felt like it needed *something* to make it a story that lived and breathed.

Precious, rare books. A family-owned department store, getting ready to expand. A lovely young (orphaned) bookseller who's trying to save her and her grandmother's livelihood; the bookshop started by her deceased parents. A subscription-only lending library.

And, a handsome, kind heir to the department store. All set in the wondrous Gilded Age. An age which is gorgeous and glittering on the outside...but which sets its honors and accolades on the fabulously wealthy and their homes, wardrobes, and society events and marriages.

Ivy, the bookseller, and William, the heir, meet by happenstance when her foot twists and she's almost flung under the path of a heavy, lumbering beer wagon; when William snatches her from certain death and saves her life. He's struck by her beauty, for certain; yet, having just been dumped by a Philadelphia society heiress, he's not in the market for a new love relationship. Yet there is something so appealing about Ivy.

Ivy feels the same way. And they do reconnect, enjoying church and a bike outing. Yet William is hiding something from her. He's in her hometown of New York City to open a new store for the family business of Denwall Department Stores. In the neighborhood of her own bookstore, no less. (Think "The Shop Around the Corner" or "Who's Got Mail.") He means to tell her...but he keeps putting it off. Until it becomes apparent in a quite hurtful way.

Ivy and William have enjoyed an innocent yet growing courtship. There's so much in the other that each one admires. Yet she's concerned that her ugly orthotic boot will put him off; and there's also her quite evident difference in social status. Yet once William's secret is out, she can't imagine that the hurt between them could mend.

And yet! Ahead of them are numerous adventures, which I won't mention here as I don't want to spoil your enjoyable listen! Kimberly Keagan tells a marvelous story, quite imaginable in its Gilded Age setting, with endearing characters who'll keep your interest going. Through all the adventures, to the end of the book! Enjoy!

This was a sweet romance about two people attracted to each other but fighting it as they both started out believing a romance couldn't work between them. William had been dumped by who he thought would be his perfect match, even if they weren't in love, so decided to focus on proving his worth to his father so he could take over the family business. He was drawn to Ivy when he met her but felt he had too much work to do and his father would never approve anyway since she was of a lower station so wasn't planning to pursue anything. Ivy, too, had a past rejection but because of her shorter leg that she had to wear a special shoe for. She felt that no one would want her, especially not a man of high society, since she and her grandmother were struggling shopkeepers. If it weren't for Will's pushy but loving brother, I don't know if they would have gotten together as Will seemed determined to stay away. He had to work through some issues with his father as he had impossible standards that no one could live up to and work to fight for the woman he loved. I liked the echoes of You've Got Mail with the little bookshop fighting to survive and the big store coming to threaten their way of life. I liked the mystery where Ivy started to notice rare books missing at her second job as a librarian and was trying to figure out if they were being stolen when Will's brother was attacked. They were drawn closer than before and he started to help her with the mystery. There was also a faith element as they attended church together and there was mention of prayer. I thought the narrator did a good job but I did have to listen at 2x the speed. I usually do, though, as that's what I'm used to now so anything slower usually seems too slow, especially at the regular speed. I liked the story and if you like romance, you'll probably like it. I am curious to continue the series as I'm interested in who will catch the bookworm brother's eye.

I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook from the author. I was not compensated for this review. All opinions are my own.

This book checked all the right romance boxes for me. I haven’t read a core romance novel in a while, so it was refreshing to dive into one and truly enjoy meeting the characters. 'Perfect' delivers the classic "wealthy yet good-hearted man meets kind but financially struggling woman" trope—made even more compelling by the heroine’s unique challenge. Ivy, a bookseller, has a noticeable limp due to her right leg being a few inches shorter than her left. While an improbable romance in any era, the historical setting makes their love story feel almost impossible, which heightened the stakes.

Both protagonists were hardworking, lovable, and deeply committed to their families, which made their journey rewarding to follow. It’s rare to find a romance where both leads are equally likable, but this one got it right—I found myself rooting for both.

My only wish? A more original, witty, or creative lovers’ meet. While the story was enjoyable, the way Ivy and Will first crossed paths felt predictable and unmemorable.

Despite that, this was a charming, comforting read, and I look forward to the next book in the series—hopefully, one about the quirky and intriguing Bert.

Kimberly Keagan’s debut novel is Perfect. And not just the title. The setting of Manhatten, New York in 1895, and the rise of the department store, was a wonderful backdrop for this historical inspirational romance. Will and Ivy grabbed my heart from the very beginning. Kimberly weaves a beautiful story of two people whose different worlds intertwine in ways that weren’t quite clear at first, yet ultimately turned into something perfect in every way. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Perfect is Kimberly Keagan’s debut novel. It was a pleasure to read her first published works. I look forward to reading some more of her works. It was a sweet Gilded Age story.

The character development was good. I enjoyed getting to know William and see how he went through being jilted by his fiancée. Seeing his heart, his desire to launch the new department store for his father, while also helping out Ivy and spending time with her. Ivy was fun to get to know. She has a past to overcome, losing her parents and trying to keep their dreams alive, while also dealing with her leg that is shorter, which seems to be an embarrassment to her.

The setting was perfect: Manhattan, New York, in 1895. I loved walking the streets and envisioning the city at that time, seeing the beginning of department stores, the pushback, and the thoughts behind the need for them. I enjoyed the storyline. It made for a slightly slower pace after some of the other books I have been reading, but it was perfect.

The opposites attract relationship that blossoms between Ivy and Will is great. I loved watching them fall in love, and then overcome the hardships of being from different classes and untold truths. It made for a great low-spice romance.

Kimberly Keagan does a great job intertwining faith throughout the book.

What a lovely read!

From the beginning of Perfect I’ve been intrigued by the characters and their backgrounds that influence the setting of the story. I loved watching Ivy and Will grow in their faith and determination to do what their heart desires.

This book is the perfect cozy read with enough drama and sweet humor to keep you hooked all the way!

Definitely looking forward to future books in this series!
(Secretly hoping Bert gets his own story;)

I'm giving this book 3.5 ⭐

I felt like all the elements were there. The romance was sweet, the characters likeable, and even the added mystery was fun. However, I feel like there's something missing in the story, but I can't figure out what. Maybe it's because it's the first book of the series, and there will be more to come. Regardless, I thought it was a very cute book, just not my favorite.

Thank you BookSirens for sending me this free copy of Perfect. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

*4.75 stars*
Genre: Romance, historical
Tropes: Opposites attract, instant attraction, forbidden romance, love after being jilted
Setting: Gilded Age Manhattan and Philadelphia
Writing style: Dual POV (within each chapter), except for a third POV in three chapters; 3rd person, past tense
Character- or plot-driven: Both

Romance: Yes
Clean level:
• 1 mouth kiss, 3 sentences long; another with zero description.
• 1 instance of running kisses up the neck and behind an ear, which is recieved with a sigh; 1 nose kiss, 1 hand kiss.
• 1 expressed wish to kiss, 5 brief thoughts of kissing someone, 1 instance of hoping to be kissed, 2 instances of gaze lingering on lips.
• 1 instance of nuzzling
• Attraction throughout. 2 instances of noticing a man’s muscles. A man and woman brush against each other multiple times throughout. Woman has a dream about dancing with a man.
*See caveats below

Sensitive aspects:
• 1 description of “taste” during a kiss – “She tasted of...he wanted to go on tasting her”
• “He’d loosened his necktie and unfastened the top button of his shirt, exposing the valley between his collarbones. Her hands itched to touch the spot.”

*There are light Christian elements in the vein of generic church sermons; there is one Christian Bible verse as well. Generic mentions of G-d are occasionally woven naturally into conversation and the narrative. If you believe in G-d but aren’t Christian, you shouldn’t have an issue.

Favorite aspects of the book:
• The characters
• The relationships
• The message

Thoughts on main characters: I love all of them.

I enjoyed this stellar debut immensely. It moves at a steady pace and engaged me all the way through. The chapters are fairly short, so nothing drags or feels excessive or unnecessary.

As the title suggests, the story calls the whole idea of perfection into question. What does a perfect life look like? What does a perfect match look like? Is perfection a worthy goal or value? Does perfection even exist?

The highlight for me was the relationships between different characters, every one of them heartwarming and beautiful in its own way. Ivy and William are well paired—both incredibly hard-working and deeply dedicated to their families. I was glad the friction that comes up between them doesn’t last so that I could just enjoy watching their affection and esteem for each other grow over the course of the story. Ivy and her aunt Zella are fairly close in age as far as being neice and aunt goes. Zella is in part like an older friend and sister, and part like a mentor (or at least intending to be one). Ivy and her grandmother take excellent care of each other and make a great team. William and Robert are as close as brothers ought to be, and William clearly loves their two younger siblings as well. Robert will make a wonderful brother-in-law for Ivy—he already acts like a friend to her. Though Laura Walraven is not present for most of the book, she plays a vital role. She wants the best for all her children and for her husband, Charles. Her love for him is genuine and complete. She is in no way blind to his faults, and yet she never lets that get in the way of her care for him. She is an example of how a sweet, gentle person can also be firm and stand her ground when it matters. She confronts Charles for the sake of her children’s well-being and happiness, and she never wavers—not even a fraction of an inch.

Favorite Quotations:
• How gentle he’d been, despite his obvious strength.
• The way he’d treated her like she was something precious rather than broken.
• Bert hunted down bookshops like a hound sniffing out a fox.
• Dickens blocked the path to the door and lifted his paw. Will laughed and shook it. “Good day to you, too, Dickens.”
Maybe I should put my foot down. Demand he put his health as a priority. Besides, she needed to set an example for her children. A wife should be strong enough to stand up to her husband when needed.
• “You get along well, then, you and your brother?” Will almost chuckled aloud when he remembered their knock-down, drag-out teenage scuffles. “We do now. Growing up, we were like any other brothers close in age. Extremely competitive.” “Over what?” She tilted her head. “Our father’s attention. Fishing. The last piece of cake.” […] “I’m an only child, so I don’t know what that’s like[…] “So,” he said after a beat, “back to your childhood. Did you compete with yourself for the last piece of cake?”
• “I know what’s going on in that head of yours, Ivy King.” Zella pointed at Ivy’s feet. “You think you can’t wear a pretty gown because of your shoes.” Her face softened at Ivy’s hesitation. “Oh, dear girl, you’re more than your boots or those practical dresses you wear. You’re clever, charming, and have a light in your eyes that doesn’t need silk or satin to shine. Trust me, no one will be looking at your shoes.”
• “I’ve seen it. What time shall I meet you?” He wasn’t sure he liked the way Miss King’s lips twitched. “Seven o’clock. I like to get to the park early, before the crowds.” “At that time, you’ll get there before the birds,” Will muttered.
• Bert stopped beside Will just inside the doorway of the packed hall. “Why do I feel like Daniel entering the lion’s den?” “I’m not sure we’ll be spared like Daniel. In retrospect, I should have prayed more fervently.”
• She’d sparkled like a thousand candles when telling him.
• They sat around the small kitchen table, barely fitting in the small space. Ivy could imagine this was an experience Will had never had before, coming from such a wealthy family. Her finger ran over a tiny hole in the worn tablecloth. She moved her cup to cover the spot and then thought better of it. This was her life, holes and all, and she wasn’t ashamed of it.
• Bert reached for a glass of water, and Ivy rushed to his side to help him, guiding the cup to his lips. “Hey, what’s this?” Ivy’s eyes darted to the door at the sound of Will’s voice[…] “I’m sorry, Miss King, but I’ve yet to learn how to drink through my nose,” Bert muttered.
• Maybe Bert was onto something by taking time to do the things he loved. Although their father might call him lazy, Bert was one of the hardest workers Will knew. He just had the innate ability to balance out his life.
• “I’m proud of you both. Even if I’m still mad at you.”
• “Isn’t it amazing? What luck!” “No, not luck. Blessings. The Lord has given us many blessings this day.”
• “You’ve always talked about the perfect woman for you. Let me see if I remember correctly.” His mother tapped a long finger against her chin. “Tall, blonde, smart but not too smart, and a woman of society. Good-looking, but not necessarily a beauty. Elizabeth fits the bill perfectly. Too bad she’s a cold fish.”

A Great First Book To A New Series!

"Perfect" is a beautiful book written by Kimberly Keagan. The setting begins in Philadelphia where the handsome hero of our story, William Walraven is jilted by his fiancee for a British nobleman. The book then has us in New York City, where Will's father has him on an assignment to open their first Denwall Department Store in that city. Will and his brother Robert (Bert) are to make sure that the rundown property is turned into an upscale Emporium by November 1895, which is only a few months away. The first thing right off the bat is he saves our young heroine, Ivy King, from being run over by a beer wagon. Before this occurs, though, each of our protagonists are checking each other out: he thinks this dark haired blue-eyed woman is the most beautiful he's ever seen; she thinks this tall, muscular, chestnut-haired, hazel-eyed man is the handsomest man she's ever seen. When Ivy sprains her ankle in the process of being saved, Will hires a carriage, instructing the driver to make sure she gets home safe. She is a bookseller, having inherited her father's bookstore business when he and Ivy's mother were killed in a train accident. Ivy also has a disability, her right leg a few inches shorter than her left, of which she wears a platform shoe. Ivy's grandmother and aunt are wonderful additions to the story, as well as her overgrown puppy, a St. Bernard named Dickens. Even though Ivy has a physical disability, she is one of the strongest female characters I have ever read. Not only does she own and run a bookstore, but she also works part-time Monday to Friday mornings at a nearby well-known Astor Library. Will isn't bothered by her limp and falls madly in love with her, as she does with him. When she finds out who he is, she is not a happy camper. However, when Will's brother is nearly killed in a mugging attempt, Will and Ivy must figure out who did it before more bad stuff happens. I loved the Christian aspect of this book, from going to church on Sundays to praying for God for guidance, to every act of faithfulness. This book has it all, from the buying and selling of rare books, to who is stealing rare books from the Astor Library, to the problems between the upcoming department store and the small business owners' fear of losing their businesses, to the rigidity and pompousness of the high society of Philadelphia and New York. You will love Ivy, Will, Bert, Mr. Denison, Ivy's grandmother and aunt and dog, and Will's mother. I received an advanced reader's copy via BookSirens and this is my honest and voluntary 5 star review.

Will and Ivy . . .

With the story set in the era of the Gilded Age, Ivy King and her grandmother have taken over the family bookstore and are struggling to keep it going after her parents have died, especially in a time when women in business are not welcomed. Even other shop owners ignored them instead of offering a helping hand or useful advice.

William Walraven wants to run the family’s big department store, but his father makes that difficult and is hard to please. He challenges Will to open their first New York store with two seemingly impossible tasks: do this under budget and get it completed before the Christmas shopping season arrives. Will he meet his challenges and prove to his father that he is competent to run the business? Will he and Ivy become closer as he becomes aware of the work she puts into her business despite the attitude of the times and her own disability that makes her have to struggle a bit harder? And when his father cruelly makes sure Ivy won’t marry his son, does Will finally confront his father and decide what is really important to him in his life, the kind of man he wants to be -- and where business success doesn’t come at the cost of everything else?

What a sweet book. A simple, clean romance story with a bit of excitement thrown in. Ivy and William are both wonderful characters with easy to relate to thoughts and reactions. I enjoyed seeing NY through the filter of the late Gilded age. Bonus points for a sweet dog side character.

I received a free review copy of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

Ivy is a local bookseller trying to keep her late parents' legacy alive. Imagine her dismay when she hears a department store is moving in teo blocks over and her landlord is doubling their rent. When she meets a handsome stranger who doesn't seem to mind her limp or elevated boot, she hopes things are turning around.

William just wants to finally make his father see that he is worthy of taking over their department store empire. When he meets Ivy, he doesn't want her to see him for his name or money, so simply forgets to tell her exactly who he is. Easy to decide since he knows she hates the department stores and would possibly feel "not good enough" for his family.

However, even a lie of ommission is a lie.

Snobbery is snobbery. Stubbornness is stubborness. How can these two opposites find a happy ending?

I gave Perfect 3.5 stars rounded to four ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you Kimberly Keagan, Ventana Publishing and Book Sirens for this ARC. These are my honest opinions.

I enjoyed reading about Ivy and Will and them falling in love. I enjoyed the characters in Perfect and think they were well thought out and had decent growth.

There were a few things that I didn’t enjoy as much. One was that the synopsis of the book opens with Will having to open the department store under budget and in a shortened length of time. Even though we got glimpses of him trying to do this, it was too easily handled and I’m not sure how. I would liked to have seen more on that side of the story. The other thing that bothered me was Ivy’s short leg. It was like we knew it and we knew she had to wear a special shoe, but there was no explanation for it. That was a perfect opportunity to explain a disability and it wasn’t taken.

I did love that this was a clean romance and that God was discussed in the book.

like a historical you've got mail, perfect seems to pit ivy's family bookstore against william's family department store. he might be interested in her, but is he also interested putting her out of business? add in missing rare books for a little mystery and class differences for a little extra tension, and it all makes for an interesting, sweet story.

i seem to have this issue with so many books i've read recently... but the pacing didn't work for me. the mystery with the books wraps up by 75%; then, the class difference doesn't really become an issue until after that, and it felt too late in the story to really cause much of a problem. i wanted a little more cohesion with the build-up and pay-off...

still, it's a nice read, especially because the audiobook is well-done and easy to listen to. for a reader in need of a quick historical romance, perfect could be a *perfect* read.

(i received a complimentary copy from the author and/or publisher. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)

considerations:
—language: none
—spice: kisses only
—faith: mentions of God, church, and prayer
—content: prejudice, mentions of loss of parents

Yes, Just Perfect!

What a fitting title- this Gilded Age romance is so...perfect! The characters are interesting, the settings are well described, and the pacing is steady. I kept coming back to read “just one more chapter” until I was suddenly unable to put it down without finishing! Will and Ivy are such sweet yet burdened characters- so much responsibility on young shoulders. I enjoyed seeing their serendipitous friendship develop into chaste courtship. And how often does an author include a worshipful Sunday in her characters’ lives?! Just one of the many ways this story was so satisfying. I bought this book so I’d have the background to better understand and review its sequel. And I’m so glad I did!

I listened to the audiobook version of this story.

A satisfactory debut novel set in New York where Department Stores are pitted against small businesses. Doesn’t this still sound familiar?! As another reviewer mentioned, you definitely get “You’ve Got Mail” vibes, but the author takes a subtlety different approach.

Ivy and Will have a predictable but enjoyable courtship and Ivy brings some practicality when I usually get frustrated by manufactured drama. But, thankfully, she doesn’t fall for it too much and Will’s awesome momma comes to the rescue. Will is steadfast to Ivy, and his brother encourages him to stay the course.

Overall it’s a light story with not a lot to sink your teeth into. That makes it a lighthearted read for when you’re in the mood. I do hope that we get to see Ivy’s Aunt and Will’s siblings in stories yet to come.

The narrator had a nice style and pleasant voice, though there were a few times I wasn’t sure which brother was talking. Overall, I think the narrator did a good job showing emotions and portrayal of the multiple female characters, but she’s not on par with the “super” narrators.

I received the audiobook from the author but was not required to post a positive review. All opinions are honestly my own.

Set in New York’s Golden Age, this is a perfect read for historical romance fans.
William Walraven is a rich heir to a department store, which unsettles the local community when the rumours about the opening of the store circulate.

Ivy King, who helps her Grandmother run her bookstore, catches William’s eye when she stumbles and almost falls under the wheels of a cart driving by, and he catches her before she is hurt.

I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

This is a lovely read, which grows on you, the reader, with characters and settings you will want to spend time with.
I look forward to reading more from the author.

This is a sweet Gilded Age book. I was going to open by saying it is my first read by this author, but in looking a bit further, I think it might be a debut novel.

I always enjoy reading books set in this time period, especially that whole department store vibe....and this one was fun!

Ivy is a bookstore owner, and learns about a department store coming to their neighborhood (for a minute, I thought....oohhh...Gilded Age "You've Got Mail"....and I have to admit, there were a few similarities). What she didn't realize is that her new friend Will was the project manager, and his family was one of the owners of said store.

I enjoyed seeing their relationship begin, from their meet-cute, to their friendship, and on from there.

This story has a hint of mystery (which...I had pretty well figured out before the book ever got there...lol), which I loved, romance, delightful characters, a well-written setting, and much more.

If you are looking for a fun historical romance, I recommend you give this one a try!

I had the privilege of listening to the audio version, and it was very well done!

I look forward to reading more books in this series.

This is my voluntary review of a copy I was given.

Will has worked hard to please his demanding father. That is his only real goal. Until he meets Ivy. Slowly, he realizes how much his father has turned his back on in order to “succeed”—time with his family, friendships, and hobbies.

Ivy is working hard, too. She supports her aging grandmother by running the bookshop her parents opened after their deaths and working a part-time job.

Neither is perfect, but they are perfect for each other!

Perfect by Kimberly Keagan is a well-written clean romance based on Christian principles. The story is set in New York. It is about how a bookseller who also works part-time in the library and a son of the owner of several large department stores find their way to each other. Their lifestyles are far apart and one is rich while the other barely makes ends meet. They are wonderful real-life characters you get to know well. This is my first time reading a book by Kimberly and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I really like the Christian nature of the book.

This is a very sweet, clean story. It focuses on romance, family, and friendship, with some light faith elements and a tiny hint of mystery about stolen books (and very brief violence and injury relating to the mystery). William and Ivy are both likeable characters, though William has some growing to do with God's help. Some aspects of the plot felt a bit formulaic or over-the-top, but I still enjoyed this nice story. I recommend it to others who enjoy clean romance with hints of faith.
