The Shackleford Sisters #8

Prudence: The Shackleford Sisters, Book 8

Rate this book
In this funny Regency romance series, the Shackleford sisters descend on a Regency society that doesn't know what's hit it…

Prudence Shackleford had not expected to be a spinster at three and twenty, but unfortunately, as she'd quickly discovered, very few men were prepared to tolerate either her ghoulish sense of humour, or her macabre taste in literature. And those were the ones she'd got as far as holding a conversation with.

When invited to London by the Duke and Duchess of Blackmore to witness the Coronation of King George IV, she was equal parts horrified and intrigued. Especially after a chance meeting with a Bow Street Runner on the trail of conspirators it was feared were planning to murder the King.

Jamie Fitzroy had been a Bow Street Runner for five years. In that time he'd risen swiftly up the ranks, gaining a reputation for both ruthlessness and guile. Such were his successes in ridding London's streets of thieves and murderers, his name had become almost legendary.

But in the wake of the Cato Street Conspiracy, he was now on the trail of a gang intending to assassinate the King during his own Coronation. And with less than two weeks to go, and a London packed to bursting, the stakes had never been higher.

The last thing he had time for was a russet haired chit who was too ripe and ready by half – even if she did haunt his dreams every night…

Perfect for fans of Regency Romances with wit and humour and a little bit of steam...

Author has no understanding of actual phrases

I like these books but every one in the series has such annoying 'cant' from an author that doesn't actually understand the phrases and doesn't use them correctly.

The term for vomiting is "to cast up one's accounts". Yet numerous times, in every book the author says "cast account".

Then there's the excessive use of other stupid cant like "dicked in the nob", which genteel folk like the Reverend would never have known, let alone used. He wasn't a Cockney gangster!

Sadly the excessive use of incorrect cant was just too annoying.

Just finished the 8th book on this series of the shackleford family was pleased that prudence fell in love with the handsome Jamie a bow st runner and not a man with a title to his name as all her sisters had married into, their father was a man of the cloth who made me laugh and cry at the same time he was infuriating and lovable and took great care to see his daughters safe and married off, l cannot wait for the last book to my horror isn’t till December 23

Enjoyable

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, as its a nice easy read, full of fun and entertaining characters. However, Prudence was just an ok book. Like all the other books in the series it follows a theme of farcical mayhem and comic relief, but it was a little to repetitive and over the top. I mean the dog Freddy would have been 15+, could have simply done a Freddy Jr. The love scenes were exactly the same as Charity and Chastity it could have been copy and pasted. Felt a bit like the writer ran out of ideas, Pru's personality throughout the series had always been on the side of the macabre and she always eavesdrop on conversations , so perhaps would have been better if she'd witnessed a crime and helped Jamie with the investigation and fell in love during the process of solving the crime. This would have shown more of her unique personality. Just wished there was more interaction between the love interests, as all the books don't have much content with regards to the actual love story. I know this review doesn't high light the book that positively but it's still a fun read.

MY RATING GUIDE: 4.5 Stars. As a Pick-Me-Up read, PRUDENCE fit my mood perfectly. I’ve been listening & reading my way through the Shackleford series since I first discovered it (and the author) a number of months ago. This series is light in tone with comedic scenes and romp-style adventures (similar to Classic vignettes of ‘I Love Lucy’ or Carol Burnett from days of old). PRUDENCE continues the farcical antics of the eccentric Shackleford family. I found myself truly enjoying PRUDENCE and the resolution at the end. Just ANTHONY left.

1=DNF/What was that?; 2=Not for me; 3=Ok; 3.5=I enjoyed this; 4=I REAALY LIKED THIS; 5=I lOVED THIS! (5 is rare for me).

London, a month frm the Prince’s Coronation, Summer 1821 ~
Pru Shackleford, nearing 23, is the youngest of 8 Shackleford daughters, the daughters of a small village vicar. Each of her older siblings found, in their own time, a love match and happily married. Remarkably, several sisters even married men of the ton - a Duke, a Marquess, an Earl and a Viscount as well as the son of a wealthy mine owner, a retired naval ‘pirate’ Captain and another naval man returned from duty. Prudence had no intention of marrying anyone, unless she could find a man who would allow her to continue reading her gothic novels, entertain herself as she pleased and wear whatever she wished.

Lowborn Jaimie Fitzroy left Blackmoor village 6yrs ago and headed to London to make his own way. He has been a successful Bow street runner for 5yrs. Suspicion of an assassinate attempt of the King during his London Coronation brings Jaimie back to Blackmoor where his mentor, the Duke of Blackmoor resides. While enroute to the Duke’s estate Jaimie runs across Prudence, who he knew years ago. Prudence has changed much from the straggly ragamuffin Jaime remembers. She still speaks her mind, but she has become quite lovely.

Comments ~
1) Each book in the Shackleford series features one of Reverend Shackleford’s eight daughters, with the 9th and final book, ANTHONY, featuring the Reverend’s only son. PRUDENCE features main characters who were acquainted in their youth but grew apart as they matured. When they meet again, 6yrs later, sparks fly, barriers rise, dastardly political plots and a royal Coronation hinder their path to happiness. But love finds a way.
2) PRUDENCE is bk8 in the 9bk Shackleford Sisters Historical/Comedy Romance series and can probably be read and enjoyed as a standalone title. Each novel after bk1, however, includes certain older siblings and their (newly) acquired spouses in peripheral roles in the books that follow. I have enjoyed reading this series in order (and listening). The last book, ANTHONY, features the youngest child and only son of vicar Shackleford. I purchased the audio of it and look forward to returning to this eccentric family again in the future.
3) In my previous reviews of bks 1-3, I remarked on the frequent & ridiculous behavior of Mr Shackleford. (His character is the main comic relief, especially in the earlier books). It seems his behavior has become more restrained in the books that followed (or perhaps I simply have gotten accustomed to his & his family’s ridiculous behavior). Plenty of romp-adventures occur and the stories move quickly. I am surprised to be enjoying these as much as I am - as Pick-Me-Up, entertaining and humorous reads. This is my first series by B Watts.
4) Readers looking for a light palate cleanser, a Regency Comedic Romance Romp, a Pick-Me-Up read, something a bit crazy and not particularly deep might enjoy checking out this series. Books 3-8 (FAITH, HOPE, PATIENCE, CHARITY, CHASTITY & PRUDENCE) are my favorites so far (but the first 2 grabbed my attention, so there is that). ;D The audio for PRUDENCE was excellently narrated by Alan Medcroft, Eliidh Beaton, Hannah Hedley & Mark Elstob.

READER CAUTIONS ~
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language and English slang are used on occasion.
VIOLENCE - PG.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - brief intimacy scene in the second half which could easily be skipped if desired.

Prudence was the last of the sisters to remain unmarried. That didn't bother her at all; but she knew it bothered her father. She was not against marrying; but she wanted a real man. One who talks intelligently and one who doesn't want to dominate his wife. Prudence was brutally honest and not afraid to say what she thinks. She isn't against marriage; but it has to be to the right man.
Nick and Grace are leaving Blackmore to travel to London for the Kings coronation. This would be the proper time for Prudence to be introduced to society without putting pressuring her to find a husband. However, due to the possible attack on the King during the Coronation, Nick had to go early and Grace insisted she go with him. That led to all of the family was to dress to the nines and go with NIck.
Although they weren't invited, Reverend Shackleford and his wife decided they must go too. They were relying on Faith and her husband to put them up. they just hope the letter had arrived. The only conveyance available was an old cart and stay at less elaborate places. Reverend and his wife had hoped with Percy and his new wife would get on with their honeymoon and get rid of Percy's mother at the same time. Their adventures themselves make for fantastic time.

Jimmy Fowler was a street boy that was always looking for something. He left home looking for his future. He grew up in the same village as Prudence and knew of the Shackleford Sisters' mischief as they grew up. He had worked for the Duke of Blackmore and admired him. When his name came up in the list of suspects for the problems with the coronation, Jamie, as he was known now, knew he had to be the one to go and talk to the Duke about the problem. He knew the Duke could
not possibly be involved in the problems.

As the coronation came closer, tensions rose as the men frantically worked to find the perpetrators and stop them before the coronation.

5 STARS, THE LAST DAUGHTER'S TIME TO MARRY

Beverley Watts gets 5 STARS for her interesting storyline in this quirky Series: The Shackleford Sisters. Great characters and some we readers are familiar with from previous books in the series. Finally, the Reverend is on his last daughter, his 8th one but he doesn't think she will take to society long enough to catch a husband.

Lots of stuff going on in this Book 8 in the Series, finally Percy Noon, the curate is getting married & his mother the former smuggler pops up for his wedding. The Duke has been running to & fro from London because of the preparation for George VI's Coronation. Everyone is getting ready to head towards London including Prudence.

Then, out of the blue, Jimmy Fowler rode back in town to see the Duke. Shocking all since he had up & left even his Mother has not heard from him, & the Duke thought of him almost like a son. Well he is back on official business & hopes the Duke will accept why he left, because he thought of him like a father. He had to do it and try to make something of himself on his own, maybe the Duke will understand.

Unfortunately Prodence & Jimmy run into each other at the small pond while he is watering his horse. Yes, the sparks fly & the sexual attraction knocks them both silly. They have to maneuver around this situation as they get the traitors under control first.

Readers of this series can't help but groan & shake their head at the shenanigans that the Reverend & his curate end up involved in. Or his daughters, any of the 8. Laughing out loud & often is par for the course for this series, I especially get a kick out of Mary Noon, the curate's mother. How Augustus Shackleford ended up with 3 wives that where the first 2 had 4 daughters each ( each had a set of twins ) & his 3rd & current wife had 1 son, must have been God's Will.

Don't miss out this is the story of the last of his daughters' Prudence & Jimmy.

The downside of an enjoyable series is when you come to the final one or two books and know the end is in sight, and your friends will soon be gone. The Shackleford Sisters series has not been my favourite series, not even close. However, it has been entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny at times, and as the others in the series, a twist in a different direction from most of the historical romance adventures. Prudence was no exception. The youngest of the sisters and perhaps the most eccentric, with a taste for the macabre, she fears nothing and is the one least likely to find a husband. Until an old friend turns up, I should not have been surprised by Jimmy's return, and I must admit, my heart fluttered as he was an important character to the duke. Of course, taking Prudence, the Vicar, Percy and Freddy to London during the king's coronation is a disaster waiting to happen. Add a couple more interesting characters, and we have another of Ms. Watts's humorous, exciting, "oh no!" enjoyable reads. I expected Prudence and Jimmy to have a bit more interactions and macabre moments due to his job and Prudence's sense of the bizarre, but as usual, Ms Watts has so many colourful characters and side stories that it is difficult to keep the book from being a saga rather than a novel. But the book was entertaining and quickly read.

Best in the series so far.

Prudence Shackleford & Jimmy Fowler(or Jamie Fitzroy) and the rest of the merry group from Blackmore band together to stop the Kings upcoming coronation from becoming his execution.

To be 100% honest, I could totally be riding a high and being a little too liberal in giving this a four star review, but it’s honestly the best story in the series so far. Even the relationship element was handled pretty well and not too unbelievable and rushed. It helped that we already knew both characters from previous books and that both characters already knew each other. (of course not in a romantic way) This book had all the positive aspects of the previous books, the chuckles, the characters, the intrigue, along with improving upon the aspects from other books that I didn’t like as much. The author didn’t choose to skip as many scenes and tell us about it later. The relationship was more believable. All in all this was a solid Beverly Watts book. bravo

Continuing the theme from the earlier books with a humorous improbable tale. There is a strong willed and unpredictable daughter with Prudence the youngest but by no means mildest of the gang, the leading man has featured before but now he has matured and become a Bow Street Runner.

The father Augustus features strongly along with his curate and long suffering hound. The plot seems daft but in fact there was considerable fear of popular uprisings in Britain at the time and George IV was an unpopular monarch.

There is a bit of erotic interaction, but it is hardly a strong feature in what is essentially a fun Georgian romance.

Delightful

Another really enjoyable story about the Shackleford family. If you have read the other books in the series you just know the Reverend Shackleford will cause mayhem wherever he goes. This is a delightful series and I urge you to read it. It will definitely bring a smile to your face and there are some laugh out loud moments. Really looking forward to the next book which is about Anthony the son. The big disappointment is that it is due to be the last in the series.

Surprised

It has been a long time since I started a series and stayed captivated this far into it! These books have made me laugh out loud and have kept me interested and have been thoroughly enjoyable. Prudence, in particular, touched my heart and even brought tears to my eyes. I am looking forward to reading Anthony and hope to read more by this author in the future. It is rare in this genre to find such enjoyable books that aren't also heavy on the sex scenes. Highly recommend this series!

Finding her way

I loved Jamie and Prudences story. She was the last sister not married and he was a straggly lad who’s grown up to be a Bow Street Runner.
Jamie has been gone for 6 years but as he returns to see the Duke he wonders how he will be received. Prudence just wants to be left alone and there is no one who wants her hand n marriage until she lays her eyes on Jamie again.
With a threat to the crown and conspirators out there can Jamie, The Duke and Malcolm find the answers.
A wonderful story with a perfect ending.

What a wonderful storu

Prudence is the last of the seven Shackle ford daughters and the one least likely b to find or want a husband. Circumstances brought Prudence and Jackie together , but of course there is a mystery to solve and all the usual players half a part to play. This series is great and very entertaining. You will find yourself laughing at parts and smiling at others. Enjoy!

Although she's a Shackleford, Prudence's story seemed to be one of the hardest for me to get through.
I love this family, but the youngest of the sisters'stories seemed slow and harder to get into. Perhaps this was because there was less to do with her father and more to do with the Duke of Blackmore?!
Still think this family should have a TV series and I cannot wait to find out how Anthony gets his happily ever after!!

prudence. …… at last

So the book finally came. I found this one just a little bit boring and hard to really get in to. It came out well in the end. I found the last 4/5 chapters the best, and of course it’s eventual happy ending.
Not as continually exciting as previous reads though.

Another happy ending.

I love this series Sam quite sad that all the sisters are now married. It is only Anthony who is left to find his wedded bliss. I have enjoyed getting to know this family and all the people of their small community. I am thankful to authors like Beverly Watts who writes such entertaining books.

I didn't forsee Prudence ending up the way she did. Fortunately it wasn't the toad eating Baron! The Shackford sisters married titles and with him showing up so early in the story, I was afraid. Then again none of the girls were going to marry anyone they didn't want to. A little government intrigue made this book spicy and Mary Noon added a vulgar dash!

I loved it!

Prudence is a lovely character who knows her own mind! A lovely story throughout, with the happy ending I was hoping for.
I found myself laughing out loud at the antics of the reverend and Percy.
I'm now looking forward to reading the final book of this series. Highest recommendations!

Once Again A Great Read

Beverley Watts has outdone herself with this story of Prudence, the eighth Shackleford sister. From the beginning of the book the tension mounts because of the once missing Jimmy Fowler and his belief that there is a conspiracy to kill the king. I highly recommend this book.

The best of the bunch!

I enjoyed this story more than any of the others, I just could not put my tablet down and read this straight through. What a fun, engrossing set of stories these are, and the romance, it just is always as proper as impropriety could possibly be. The romances are way more important than the actual sex. I would give 10 stars if I could!

ah one of my favorite couples

You must read all the previous books to understand how very special this book is. It shows the aging Reverend and all the extra characters. As a stand alone you lose some of the impact of the before storylines. I loved this book for many reasons, the heart and emotions of the characters, watching them age and pull together and evolve. Well done.

Boring and weak

And the worst of the series.
Such a huge step backward after the excellent previous installment. Three chapters of steam and a great deal of base comments repetitively dragging an already weak story into the trash heap.
