This book reads like a biography about an abusive relationship. The whole time I was rooting for her like I could give her strength to run away.

The title of this book is amazingly insightful for the topic because it really does help reflect on why it’s just not easy to leave. And even with friends and some support system, live is not just “decide to leave and do it”. It requires thinking ahead and formulate plans on how to survive after.

The most realistic part for me is that in the middle of all the awful abuse we get to see glimpses of Philip being a good man, a caring husband and you understand how when there is the tiny bit of love, Kasey just keeps waiting for it to change. Because she knows he can sweat and loving. And that more than anything is what I feel keeps her staying.

Wow just wow.

The experiences outlined in the book resonated with me throughout. Kasey's experiences as the default parent, the secrets, lies and manipulation of the husband, as well as the prioritisation of everything but their family. The gaslighting of all the problems, the abandonment and health issues. Then finally the financial controls and breakdown in communication, it could be me writing the story. Well written. Emotionally charged at least for me.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A MUST READ - especially for everyone who ignorantly and insensitively asks,
"Why didn't she just leave?"

"I Know Why She Stayed" by Kasey Rogers and K. J. Harrowick, tells two stories of different forms of financially abusive relationships, depicting not only the emotional trauma, but the suffocating financial control that makes it nearly impossible for many women to escape or break free from dire situations that society often misunderstands and thus judges.
iknowwhyshestayed.org states: ‘99% of women worldwide who face domestic violence also endure financial abuse, trapping them in a cycle of dependence and fear. More than fifty thousand women die every year from domestic abuse, yet many feel they have no choice but to stay because leaving means losing everything—‘
- their home, healthcare, food, children’s schools (or sometimes their children), support systems, pet(s), vehicle— the list goes on and on. With no financial resources of their own, leaving is often not even a choice.
What makes "I Know Why She Stayed" so powerful is its unflinching portrayal of the economic realities that keep women tethered to their abusers. It shines a much-needed light on the often-overlooked financial abuse, making this novel not only a compelling read but also an urgent call for awareness, understanding, compassion, and action.
This book is a testament to the resilience of survivors and a sobering reminder of the countless women still trapped in the shadows of domestic violence.

Beautiful, painful, raw.

Abusers aren't some weird monsters, most of the time they appear to be caring partners & parents. That's why it's so hard to realise you're being abused.
