As a child, I was often kept up at night by an overactive imagination. When I got to college, I decided to study writing so I could put that imagination to better use. I am an avid reader and rarely let a week go by without finishing at least two books. I love the way that books allow passage into other people's thoughts and let me see how they view the world. Though I have been writing stories as long as I can remember, Atancia was my first novel.

Atancia is far from just another romance. With crazy plot twists, mysterious Aussies, and a clever spin on immortals, I loved it from beginning to end. Whenever I put it down, the story stayed with me until I was compelled to pick it back up again.

Atty is a sweet, shy girl who suffers from panic attacks. She meets Ben, a swoon-worthy Durand, and as they grow closer he reveals a few facts she doesn’t know about herself. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but the Durand mythology is fresh and interesting. We learn about it as Atty does, and I loved certain rules that were integrated in the world.

Figueiro has a talent for weaving beautiful narrative and empathetic characters. I cared about Atty, crushed on Ben, and fell absolutely in love with Matty. Their relationships kept the story flowing at an excellent pace.

And the end!! OMG. I’m on pins and needles, desperately waiting for the second novel.

Fabulous book. I highly recommend for anyone who likes YA, paranormal, or just great story telling.

A fantasy well-grounded in flesh-and-blood reality; a thriller full of subtly chilling, sustained tension; and a romance that travels along two seemingly incompatible courses, Atancia defies definition as a whole and steadily exceeds expectation from chapter to chapter. In this first of two books, the dialogue is deceptively simple, while the atmospheric descriptions are rich and entrancing. Initially, Atancia’s inner monologue is what encourages us to follow her down a rabbit hole, leaving dozens of unanswered questions as she haltingly tramps alongs vast terrains of time, space and emotion.

We meet Atancia at a particularly vulnerable time. Having only recently graduated from high school, Atancia is struggling to stay afloat during a period of heightened uncertainty, vulnerability and curiosity about the world beyond her suburban Miami neighborhood. While initially devoted almost exclusively to her adoptive grandmother and best friend Lizzie as family and her college coursework as occupation, Atancia’s curiosity about her past, present and future diverts her attention enough to coax her onto an entirely new and uncharacteristically unplanned path.

As her life begins to tilt on its own axes, spinning into unfamiliar and discomforting terrain, following the beat of her heart becomes a new focus for her, one that has both life-saving and transformative consequences. The competing influences of new friends and lifelong connections rock Atancia’s world to its core, revealing a profound intuition, capacity for love, personal power and familial responsibilities beyond her wildest imaginings - and, in certain key cases, her worst nightmares. Her growing need to understand and assimilate matters intimate and historical, supernatural and organic, benign and menacing helps sustain and steady her as she navigates dark paths and discovers even darker truths. Her natural curiosity and preternatural intuition provide Atancia with the motivational fuel necessary to overcome her fear and self-doubt rather than become paralyzed by the swiftly shifting sands of truth.

It is literally the beat of Atancia’s own heart which proves to be her most reliable compass, but learning to trust herself is the most difficult of the manifold challenges she confronts. Conquering her panic attacks with a simple breathing technique is as critical as believing in her growing phyisical abilities. Within the context of her self-doubt, we as readers are given the opportunity to see ourselves and our own struggles mirrored in this ultimately empowering series of events. Atacia’s character proves strong enough to enlighten lives far beyond her own.

Luckily, this singular journey has reached neither it apex nor its conclusion.. As you read the final pages of Book 1, I suggest taking your own pulse before deciding whether to take a U-turn to the beginning or forge ahead into Book 2: For Atancia. Whichever path you choose, I encourage you to eventually follow Atancia as far as she will guide you. As her enigmatic and elusive mother advises “Find those who can teach you about the stars. What you seek will be near.”

Thank you to Wren for providing me a copy to review, although this didn't alter my review in any way.

Atancia begins with our protagonist, Atty, experiencing inexplicable heart palpitations. They seem like panic attacks, but a key piece of information about her long-lost mother sends Atty searching for answers. Atty doesn't know much about her mother and, from what she does know, it looks like her mother was in some kind of trouble. Atty's search for answers leads her to a boy (an Australian boy woot woot! To balance my praise for this, I should point out that Atty is Latina) called Ben. This sets up an intriguing story that beckons you to keep reading to unravel Atty's mystery, and to uncover whether Ben's presence was maybe a little too convenient...

Atancia was a very easy, enjoyable read. I felt that some chapters may have benefited from a faster pace, though. The book is fairly long, so perhaps a few extra cuts could have solved this. The beginning was also a little slow and I wasn't always sure that every part being written about was contributing to the overall story.

Atty is golden. She has a hint of relatable awkwardness that makes her believable, endearing and sincere. Ben is more of a conundrum... And Matty, well, what a cutie.

Before we know it, Atty is diving headfirst into the world of the Durand - a group of immortal beings who live among humans and live forever by transferring energy from other living things to themselves. The Durand grow like human children until about twenty years old, when they begin feeling the flows of energy all around them and their bodies switch to a system of consuming raw energy to survive rather than food. The world actually sounds pretty beautiful - imaging seeing and feeling the flows of energy in everything around you - but there's a dark side, too.

Atancia is a refreshing take on the Vampire analogy, with plot twists a plenty. There is a nice amount of romance (that first kiss is a doozy!) and a cheeky cliffhanger. What the...? Looks like it's time to grab a copy of book 2!

Today, I am reviewing the Paranormal Romance story Atancia by Wren Figueiro. This is a medium-ish book of about 100k words that describes a race of immortals known as Durands who feed off of the energy from living things. The protagonist, Atancia (“Atty” to her friends”) learns that she is one of these beings when Ben, a very handsome, urbane, and mature Durand walks into her life.

I give this book a 4.5/5. Here is my breakdown.

Characters: 5/5. Holy…hell. Figueiro does a fantastic job of creating interesting and rich characters. I could feel Atty’s nervousness, Nana’s caring and concern, the electric attraction between her and Ben, Matt’s fumbling…it was all amazingly well done. The characters drive this story, and they do a bang-up job at it.

Plot/Storyline: 5/5. When a book is this good, sometimes you feel worried that you’re overdoing the praise…but it just really was this good. The last half of the story (which is part of a duology, by the way) had me paging through as fast as my eyes could take in the words. There was a sense of compelling action…without what most people would consider “action.” This links back to the Characters section: if Figueiro hadn’t done such an amazing job of creating the people and making us care about them, the story may have stuttered and fallen flat. It did not.

Flow: 5/5. Onward and onward and onward with nary a dull moment. Never did I consider that the descriptions were too long, or too wordy, or that there were better things to do. I was wrapped up in the story and it took me wherever it chose.

Spelling/Grammar: 3.5/5. Ah. This is what kept Atancia from achieving the first perfect 5-star rating I have ever given. There were spelling and grammar mistakes sprinkled throughout – not tremendous, not onerous, not “my-god-what-is-wrong-with-you”…but they were there, and I noticed them. Another proofread (since this is an e-book) would definitely be advised.

Overall: 4.5/5. Yes! Wren Figueiro is a prime example of how independent authors can do excellent work. This is her debut novel, and, if the next in the duology can even keep up with this one, I think she has the potential for a splendid career.

The premise of this book is quite interesting. The characters are multidimensional, and you can empathize with them. All in all an enjoyable read.

I got this book from the author through Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.

Atancia is a great story about a fantastic supernatural world hidden in our very own. I usually don't care for urban fantasies, but it worked in this scenario. However, for some reason, I wasn't engrossed by it. Let me try to explain:

Pros:
- I really like Atancia (Atty). She is very relatable, intelligent and kind; and I think her misgivings just make me like her more. She is not the strong and powerful kind of heroin, but she struggles to be the best she can despite her (almost pathological) shyness. She (mostly) makes smart choices and trusts her instincts, and there were no moments where I rolled my eyes in despair over how cliche or egotistical the teenager was. She is honest about her feelings and level headed, and that is very refreshing.
- I also love that she has such a positive parent figure in Nana, because that is very rare in YA. The other characters, for the most part, are also likable and well developed.
- The premiss is really interesting, and the mystery around Atancia's background got me interested throughout the whole story, making me pick it up every chance I got. This was a very easy book to read and there were no major plot errors or unnerving twists. There were wonderful depictions of Australia, but not so much I was diverted from the fantasy.

Cons:
- There was only one, but it's an important one for me: I could't really FEEL the story, and I think that has to do with how it was told. This book is written in Atancia's POV, as if she is relating a past story. So it made me feel like a friend was telling me something that has taken place in her life - as in: I was interested, but not excited. I didn't feel like I was there, but like I was hearing about it from afar. She explained every feeling, every conversation, and even every uneventful detail that happened between the eventful ones. And that made scenes that should have been thrilling seem lukewarm. It hurt the pace of the story and it prevented me from putting my heart into it. And it all just tied up so very neatly in a bow. Her mother's clues, things with Ben, other things later that I don't want to spoil... It's not bad, but it just didn't make my heart pound.

That being said, I will read the next book if I have the chance. It is a nice, light read, that got me very interested in how it ends.

*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

I have very mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I really loved it the world creation and concept was great. But then it really annoyed me too, it was quite a long book and don't feel like much happened - stuff did happen it was just very gradual.

The concept of the Durand and taking energy was really cool and interesting. I haven't come across that sort of storyline before. The immortality and great long breaks between all the kids added something too - I found the 'kid thing' quite humorous.

Atty's character was really mature although I feel almost as though she was too rigid... I found it hard to like her some times, and empathise with her as she's just a bit to, well, boring I think. I loved her sense of morality though and the issues she faced.

The relationship's are something I'm a little 50/50 on. I loved Ben and Atty (mostly - this makes sense once you've read it). They were really good together and he balanced out her character a lot; she changed a lot with him - in good ways, his protectiveness of her annoyed me a little at first but it did eventually make sense. I didn't like her 'infatuation' with Matt though. Just because he has a pretty face. Either she is getting with him or staying with Ben.

My big problem with this book is definitely it's length; I have nothing wrong with long books but for this one I think there was a lot of unnecessary - perhaps even repetitive - stuff happening. Considering the story I would have liked it to have been a little more fast paced.

I'm still trying to come to terms with the ending - it annoys me how readily she went with Matt (are they together or not!!). I wish that last bit had been dragged out a bit longer; yes I know that goes against what I've said but it was the most actiony part of the book and it was so short. I can't wait to read the next book and find out what happens next though - plot twists guys!!

In a nut-shell: Shy and kind hearted Atancia has her logical world turned on its head the night Ben walks into it. Hit hard with an utterly life altering revelation, she's faced with major adjustments to make and a puzzle to solve.

Her journey into her new life among the immortal Durand effectively pulled me in, learning and experiencing right alongside her.

The pace and tone flowed gently, yet still managed to pack a punch- what it lacked in kick ass action, it more than made up for in plot jolts.

The romance was beautifully handled and very believable. I could easily relate to Atancia's initial awkwardness and insecurity, as could I follow her growth in confidence as their romance progressed. Though she and Ben did get together early on in the story, it didn't feel rushed -I appreciated the hold off on declarations of love.

Lack of self-awareness, slight gullibility, poor sense of direction and embarrassing social skills are all traits I share with Atancia, and she did feel very much like a real girl -down to earth and emotionally driven. (Though, the fact that when folk told her she was special, they meant it as an actual compliment rather than a poorly veiled insult did have me resenting her just a tad).

Ben was initially well developed but once his big secret is outed, I was left wondering how much of that early development could be trusted. There seemed little further development for him from that point on. And, considering the swerve the story takes, I figure this was purposefully done.

Matt, on the other hand, felt fully bared to me: Open, honest and caring. I loved his special skill and he sounded incredibly hot- who could say no to a tall, dark, sexy-as-hell musician? Seriously.

A lovely character driven story with a fresh and well developed take on the immortal species living among human-kind. Looking forward to book 2.

Review Wren Figueiro, first book in the Durand duology series "Atancia"

I was really surprised by this book. It was very hard for me at first to read it, because it had a very long beginning, but after a few chapters it started to get interesting.

Atancia lives with her adoptive grandmother whom she calls Nana, she has been the one taking care of her after her mother left. Atancia doesn't remember her mother, she was only one month when she left behind by her mother.
Well Atancia is a very shy person, but was invited to a New Year's Eve party by a almost kinda friend. She met Benjamin at this party and they hit it off right from the start, ok maybe after he broke her shyness.
Atancia has started to get these heart thumps after she saw a young boy die. So that's odd. But what's even more odd is that she was giving a message by Nana from her mother, something about seeking light to find the pease. After that the exiting things began!

Wren did gave away a little hint in the beginning of the book, first I did take it as well just thoughts and conversation, but as the book progressed I found out that it actually was a hint ;) so really read between the lines and keep an eye on the conversation, it may hold leads!

Wren has a natural gift for weaving plots and twists into his story, and it really amazed me! Great book from a really great writer.

I thought this book was fantastic.

I think it's the best paranormal romance book I've read since Twilight and the first several Sookie Stackhouse books. I hope I'm not scaring away the Twilight haters by saying this. This book has no sparkly vampires. So no worries there.

The book is about energy vampires. Instead of taking blood, they take energy.

A lot of the book takes place in Australia. Since I love Australia, I loved that.

I'm afraid to say much about the book. I don't want to give anything away.

Maybe it's okay if I say this: The book has great twists and turns. But there's enough subtle foreshadowing...hints. So it doesn't seem like anything is coming out of left field.

I am really glad I read this book so close to when the second book will be released because I can't wait to keep reading!

I really loved the character of Atancia. She's sweet, innocent, caring, totally likable. I loved how the writer wrote her interactions with the love interest(s). She really let the tension build slowly and slipped in little mysteries that made me want to keep reading to solve them!

Also, I totally have a huge crush on Matt now, and I can't wait to see where the next book takes them!

First, I would like to thank the author for giving me a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review!

So, I will say this book took me a while to get into. The sentence structure was pretty basic, and the world building wasn’t fantastic. I had just read a lot of fantasy books, though, so that may have been part of the reason why I felt that way.

I did think this the storyline was unique. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like this.

There was some tragedy sprinkled throughout the book. Our main character has truly gone through a lot of tragic times in her life. One event in particular really broke my heart.

About halfway through the book, we meet Ben’s (Atancia’s boyfriend) family. That’s when the story really started to intrigue me! I loved getting to know more characters, and I really liked one of these new characters named Matt. He’s a total heartthrob, and he just seems so sweet.

I have to admit, I kind of saw the plot twist coming, but I still really liked how it played out. The ending of Atancia perfectly set the set stage for the next book.

Based off of the characters the second book will be focusing on, I think I will enjoy that one even more than Atancia.

Although the book had a slow start, I really enjoyed the ending and I’m excited to see where the next one goes!

Full Review: http://myfantabulousbookshelf.blogspo...

THE COVER:
One thing I really want to highlight is the importance of a good cover. Unfortunately I don't love this cover and I think it really takes away from the story. A frequent saying is 'don't judge a book by its cover' and while that does hold true, there are so many books in the world, one of the factors inevitably becomes how good it looks from the outside. This cover feels haphazardly put together, and I feel like there are so many more ideas for it. For example, something having to do with energy could be on the cover, anything but this.

THE PLOT:
Going into the plot and story line of the book, I thought this book closely resembled Twilight. I liked the entire premise of the book, including the whole species of Durand and the way they function. I just wish the world had been more developed and more happened within the book, because I felt like throughout the whole five hundred page book, the pace of the book is fairly slow and slightly boring. I thought the plot was picking up when Atty started to look for her mother, but as soon as Ben came into the picture she basically stopped looking and just followed him around. I understand that a lot of this book was going into training Atty and introducing this world, but I feel like too much of the book was spent describing her everyday life and not enough of it went into the seemingly dangerous plot. Several subplots were mentioned within the book but never fully explored, I'm hoping they're mentioned later in the series because otherwise they seemed out of place.

THE CHARACTERS:
Honestly, the characters were just meh. I didn't feel myself relating too closely or getting too attached to any of them. Atty reminded me a bit too much like Bella, too dependent and needy. Ben creeped me out a bit, as did the rest of his family. All except for maybe Matt, he seemed relatively normal. Looking back on it, there weren't all that many characters in the book, since we spent so much of the time focused on Atty and her daily routine, I feel as though we missed some foundation to this new species.

Another thing I realized I didn't like because of this book. Older men with younger women. It happened in Carrie Lofty's Blue Notes and also in this one. Something about a an older man with a college student really makes me feel creeped out, which is probably why for most of the book I shipped Matt and Atty together instead of Ben and Atty.

As much as I wish that there was more in this book, I do like where this book ended because it really makes me want to read the second book and learn where all of this is going. I think if you like Twilight, this is definitely a book you may like, it's a fairly slow read, but I'm hoping that it picks up in the next book.

We first encounter the main character Atancia as she is in the midst of a panic attack. Strange physical ailments have affected her… such as extreme anxiety and erratic heartbeats. Atancia turns to her guardian who she calls Nana for answers. After it goes on a while Nana remembered what Atancia’s mother, who had left suddenly after she was born had said. That if her daughter begins to worry about her heart…then instructs her to seek the Light of Peace. Nan had up until then assumed that the statement’s meaning was metaphorical, but realized with recent events that it might be related the physical symptoms Atancia experienced.
Atancia and Nan deduce that the Light of Peace might in fact be a person, and thus the younger woman begins a search. But within the same time span, Atancia meets the very handsome Ben, who she cannot believe is attracted to her. Soon they begin to spend a great amount of time together, even chatting when he returns home to his native Australia. But Ben saying it was too difficult to remain apart returns to Miami to see Wren. During this time, more and more strange things begin to occur, and when Nana falls ill, Ben explains to Atancia that she is different, they both are different…not Human…and they each have power, a power that might help her Nana.
Atancia does eventually meet Ben’s family which consists of his father and his brother’s all extremely handsome. Unexpectedly, Atancia finds an kindred spirit in the youngest brother Matt, a musician and who has a dark beauty that rivals her golden Ben. Atancia, knows where her heart stands, but must acknowledge that she is drawn to Matt and vice versa.
Soon Atancia is on a roller coaster ride of twist and turns, leaving her and the reader wondering who can really be trusted!!!

This was really a fun read! From the beginning I was intrigued by whom and what she was; and the author did a great job with guiding the reader with a thread of suspense. The story was well paced, and crafted with enough twists, turns to keep the reader’s interest, without dragging it out causing a loss of interest.
I will say the author really did master the story telling that kept me as a reader wherever she wished to take me! I enjoyed the discourse between Atancia and Ben, but honestly I was more drawn to the warmth and vibrancy of Matt!!! I do not wish to give anything away, but I look forward to book two and to seeing what is happening with these characters!!
Great storyline, unique characters and plot…I fully recommend for anyone who enjoys paranormal or supernatural reads with romance!

Disclaimer: I rated this 3 stars not because I felt it was a low scoring book, but rather the description of the 3rd star of 'liked it' versus the 4th star of 'really liked it' better fit my feelings of it. On Amazon's scale, this is a 4 star.

Paranormal Romance isn't my typical genre, but I thought I'd give this book a go. I wasn't disappointed. I'm a little picky when it comes to formatting, but barring a few minor technical issues I had with the book I had no trouble reading this. So, on with the review of the content.

It was a little slow to start for my taste. I like things to heat up quickly, but it the pace was a gentle incline until the last quarter of the book when it picked up. It wasn't bad; in fact the setup is good for the sequel where I anticipate it will be a lot faster paced.

The story becomes a lot more engaging later when the author starts slyly alluding to several things, making good use of foreshadowing techniques. I found a very small amount of predictability in the story and that's a bonus for me. If I can see the end at the beginning, it doesn't thrill me as much. Atancia draws you along just enough to wonder 'okay, what's going to happen next?'

Atancia really pulls at your emotions. No doubt we've all felt loss in some form or another, so one can completely relate to her and the emotions she's feeling as she tries to come to terms with that and who she really is. I felt terrible for her when needed, and happy when I was supposed to.

The only qualm I have overall is that it ended too abruptly. Granted it was likely done that way to lead into the next book, but I went to turn the next page and there was none. Made me feel like there was something missing.

Overall, this is a good read. Worth picking up.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review (We <3 YA Books).

Wow.. ok, where do I start?
I think I'm so going to put so many spoilers in this review... I'm warning you! If you haven't read this book yet, DO NOT read the spoilers!
So, this book was... intriguing, mysterious, infuriating, sad, interesting, and most times hard to put down. That's probably part of why I finished reading this at like 6:30 in the morning. Yup, I'm totally in need of a good sleep but I'm afraid it'll have to wait until tomorrow night because now I got book 2 and I NEED to read it!
But let's go back to this book.
I liked Atancia, she was smart and brave but I guess she's not a good judge of character because... well... let's just say I saw things that she probably didn't want to see or was just blind. I didn't like Ben much.. he seemed sweet and caring but... I didn't trust him
I actually liked Matt and I think I sorta have a little crush on him. And he truly cares for Atty. But I guess I'll have to see what happens in book 2. And I can't wait!
Emilius gave me the creeps. And I'm very probably right about wanting to stay the fruck away from him.
So now I'm going to go read Book 2!
I'm so thanking the author for both books!

This is the first book of two that details the changing life of Atty (Atancia). She is dealing with panic attacks, possibly brought on by the trauma of seeing a young boy die in front of her. Apart from that, her life is safe and normal. However, that all changes when she goes to a New Year's Eve party and meets Ben. Before you (or she) knows it, her life has changed drastically and not in all ways good. Her beloved nana has died and Atty feels personally responsible. Ben is her knight in shining armour and helps to ease things. Before long, Atty has left the States for Australia, needing some space to get closure whilst she figures out just who she is and what she wants to do with her life.

I won't go into any more details as I dislike giving spoilers but I will say that this book has a fresh take on the whole 'vampire' story which makes it a refreshing and intriguing read. There are lots of amazing characters in here that you will like or dislike, depending on the part they play. Perhaps, it's my twisted mind, but I will admit to looking for 'snakes in the grass' throughout this story. Did I find them? That's for me to know and for you to find out when you read the book!

A brilliant book to start the duology with. Totally recommended.

This is a mixed review.
The concept of the novel is really new. And very fresh. The idea of transferring energy was interesting.
Atancia, the main character is sweet. But I found her doing the damsel in distress act too much. After a point I just thought she was being stupid and would believe anything.
It might be because I like my heroines to be strong, though. Ben is not explored much. By the end u don't really know anything about him. But u understand later why that is so.
I thought it was pretty clear by the small hints dropped here and there who was the evil guy but Atancia was just too gullible for my taste.
The writing style of the book was very distant. It was not really gripping. There were too many repetitive terms and not enough description.
I never felt that i was there with the characters. Rather it felt like someone is reciting it to me. I was interested but not excited.
What I liked about the book was the sweet fairytale romance between the protagonists.
And the concept. Full marks for the plot and the idea. And the amazing cliff hanger.
But overall it was not one of my favourite books.
Pick this book for a light read.
P.S - I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

***THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***

Tina,#NerdGirlMama’s Review

Wren Figueiro’s debut novel Atancia is a great young adult paranormal romance and hit this one out of the park. I love this story and Wren wrote with such detail and full range of emotions that had you turning page after page until the end. I have to say one thing, that ending is one heck of a cliff hanger. You find yourself surprised at what comes next as you turn the pages, you are drawn into this book from the beginning and you can picture what is happening as it happens. This book has it all mystery, suspense, love, grief, friendship, coming of age, self discovery, sorrow, twist and turns, and many unknowns.

This book for me was not only a romance, but a self discovery and a mystery of finding out who you are and where you belong. I enjoyed every minute of this book and cannot wait for the next book in this series. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good YA paranormal romance or a suspense filled mystery.

I gave this book 3.5 stars, but since I can't do half stars on Goodreads, I think it's far to give a four star instead.

First, it was refreshing to see a book with a Latina as the main character. Kudos to the author for that. Atancia and her grandmother Nana were well done. I thought that the book's opening was strong, and I did feel Atancia's sense of panic. The characters were interesting, too, and totally on point for the genre.

I didn't notice the grammatical issues that others mentioned, but there were a few times were there was a comma missing (like before someone's name). But that's minor and easily fixable.

The only thing that took away stars for me was the pacing of the plot. I thought the book moved slowly after the first few chapters, and it never quite picked up its steam after. The cliffhanger ending was pretty good, though, and it left me curious about what was going to happen next. I just wished I would have had more of that sooner.

However, I think that YA paranormal romance readers would enjoy this book. It's got an engaging heroine, mysterious but interesting characters, and a love triangle to boot!

Wren is definitely a very well versed author with a pleasant writing style. The plot of the book is very unique, which is always a huge plus when reading paranormal books. She develops her characters beautifully which allows you to really "get to know" the characters.

Antacia is an interesting character who I can't fully relate to. She seems to have her heart at the right spot, but once meeting Ben she seems to not be using her brain. There are hints of things being off along the way, but she doesn't seem to pick up on it because of her feelings for Ben.

The pace of the book is a tad slow to me. The plot is great, however I just feel like the author could have gotten there quicker without taking away from the story. I did struggle a couple of times to continue reading. What kept me reading this book mostly, was that I was waiting for some big reveal, some action in this story. There were some nice placed twists, but they started more towards the very end of this book.

All in all a good read.

I received this book – Antancia (The Durand duology #1) from the author Wren Figueiro in exchange for my honest review.

This book is a paranormal romance for young adults and it is told trough the eyes of the main character Antacia Clark.

She's a college student, who has panic attacks, is very shy and doesn't has many friends and has been brought up by Nana, her adoptive grandmother. She was left to her care by her mother who disappeared and never heard from again. She meet Benjamin Althaus at a New Year's eve party and instantly their connection is undeniable. Not only she falls for him but finds out part of her heritage.

This book is good not great. I like the fact that it was Antancia who was talking about her life and what was happening.

I found it too slow and some parts were not all that interesting. I didn't get the wow factor reading the book until near the end when the suspense was present.

Will I read the second book? Yes, the way it ended, I still want to learn what happens.

I give this book a 3 stars.

I've read many a paranormal romance before, and I have to say, Atancia is a refreshing and original take on the word "paranormal". Atty, and the majority of the characters she interacts with through the novel, are part of a lineage known as "The Durand". I enjoyed how Ben (Atty's romantic interest) explained their race - as a type of vampiric energy shifters. Instead of drinking blood, the Durand can simply transfer someone's energy to themselves.

I thought Figueiro did a great job with world-building and characters. Atty's romance with Ben was very natural and believable, without ever feeling rushed. The overall pacing of the novel, I found at times to be slower than I would have liked. However, the last third of the book really began to zip by until I was racing through the last few chapters. I look forward to the second novel in this series!

I was given this book from the author for an honest review, which is on Goodreads and Amazon

Okay, so let me start off saying that I was tripping over the names a few times. That's my first confusion.

Second confession, the beginning was just a little slow for me.

About halfway through the book, the story picks up and it becomes more exciting, which I definitely enjoyed! I wasn't expecting the major twists and especially the plot twist. It's a good YA read, and at the same time I wish it took place in a dystopian world.

So here's a little background, but nothing to really spoil. Atty or Atancia is Durand and therefore she can transfer energy from other people or animals who have energy. It's interesting on how Atty's life changes especially when she meets Ben, who is like her.

The rest of the novel is good and heartfelt and an interesting YA novel.

What a great read! I really enjoyed this book. I fell in love with the characters right away. Atty is strong, smart and a compelling heroine. When she discovers she's part of an ancient species of beings that are immortal and have been cohabitating with humans for millennia, her whole world is turned upside down. Her struggles with redefining herself and accepting the new revelations and her budding romance with Ben - the mysterious Aussie who sweeps into her life and reveals her true identity - kept me turning the pages eagerly.

I can't wait to see what happens next in the Durand Duology. I won't spoil it, but the end of the book just leaves you with more questions and dying to know what happens next.

The book has a wonderful concept, the transferring of energy between living organisms. I loved the idea! The book is written well with one issue I had over the frequent use of the word OK, not sure why that bothered me. Its probably just me and I doubt anyone else noticed it.

I really was enjoying the development of Nana and unfortunately, (when you read the book you will understand my word choice), she was my favorite character. The main character annoys me slightly in that she is, well, really gullible and weak and I wanted her to be stronger, fiercer. The ending was getting better and I do enjoy the character Ben. I do feel it will interest readers who enjoy romantic story lines.

I had heard about this book for awhile and was excited to finally read it. It started off a little slow, but good things come to those that wait! Once the main character, Atancia, began to discover the truth about her special abilities, the book picked up and became a real page-turner. I'm glad I read this now because the sequel just came out and I won't have to wait to find out what happens next! I recommend reading this book.

Fantastic

My favorite part was the last chapter because it was full of twists and turns and full of suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
