23-year-old Undesirable, Durvla Garrick, has a dangerous secret. Being both deaf and having a chronic ailment, her very existence is treasonous. So, when the Queen’s mercenaries accuse her of stealing a dress, she comes quietly—better to be arrested for her knitting skills than her illness.
Under the watchful eye of the broody royal guard, Tiernan Kilkenny—the embodiment of the very people she’s spent her life hiding from—Durvla is appointed dressmaker to the princess. But castle life isn’t quite what she expected, and nor is its staff…
With the Queen dying, Princess Carys Meredyth fa Rhodri is reluctant to inherit the throne of a broken Kingdom when she feels so broken herself. Magic has been outlawed for a millennium—so why are her memories filled with whispers of enchantment?
When Carys finds a book that only she can read, more questions unravel. Are the fairytales that have provided her comfort since childhood really only stories? Or has the truth been right there all along?
K. V. Meadows is the proud wife and the mother of two young children. With both children on the Autism Spectrum, and one with multiple disabilities, she longed to see more disability inclusion in fantasy.
When she's not poring over words, plotting, or spending hours upon hours making playlists and Pinterest boards for multiple interests, K.V. enjoy spending time with her family, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and playing video games.
Dear, This Book - I love you. What a perfect, PERFECT read for Disability Pride Month.
Representation: Deaf main character (sign and lip reading) with chronic illness, Undiagnosed mental illness in a main character, Numerous disabilities and neurodivergent characters, BIPOC author and main character, Several queer identities (demi and bi/pan coded)
The representation here isn’t just tacked on; it’s integral, nuanced, and empowering. Durvla, one of our main characters, is deaf, chronically ill, and navigating a world that criminalizes her very existence. She’s clever, resourceful, deeply empathetic, and devoted to caring for her younger (also disabled) sibling. He isn’t on the page much, but Durvla’s unwavering love for him made me instantly attached. Watching her navigate life deep behind “enemy lines” was both tense and profoundly moving. And her romance? I absolutely adored it.
Princess Carys adds even more complexity with her undiagnosed mental illness and her unraveling sense of identity. Her story is layered and heartbreaking in all the right ways.
This book doesn’t rush. It lets the characters breathe, and that emotional depth pays off big time. I wasn’t expecting this book to lean as hard into the darker elements as it did, but that ended up being one of my favorite aspects. There’s a quiet undercurrent of fury and injustice running through every chapter, with a background of smoldering political unrest that builds into something truly gripping. Think slow burn, but with rebellion, secrets, and politics threatening to boil over. For those who know me, that is a huge plus.
I don’t want to spoil a single reveal, but just know: it all works. Every beat hits. Every twist lands. This broke my heart in so many ways and I am so happy that I read it. I was so gutted and yet so full of hope by the end. I am SO excited that the next book is coming soon because I NEED it like I need air. Seriously, so good.
Highly recommend.
Thank you to the author and R&R Booktours for the complimentary review copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
Durvla is amazing and Carys is an absolute spitfire.
This book was so good to read and I immediately grew to like both Durvla and Carys, even though they lead two total opposite lives. While I love Carys for not being your typical royal kind of girl (I don’t know how else to call it), I truly admired Durvla. Durvla leads an life with secrets. The kind that will destroy ones life once discovered. She is wholly unexpected thrown into a whirlwind of a journey that would make us blanch.
The world-building is intriguing. I think there are plenty of real world inspired happenings that are masterfully woven through it and combined with a dash of fantasy it makes for an interesting read that also makes you think about life.
Solace of Dusk is an amazing debut and I for one can't wait to read what's next for K.V. Meadows.
I loved every second of this read. I am amazed that its a debut novel. The magic system is well thought out and the world building amazing! The characters are superb, a well written diverse unique cast. The duel PoV was perfectly done and not just one that repeats the same scenes. I loved the slow burn romance it was incredible, the tension, banter and connection I loved it. The found family and support network to die for! I cannot wait; ney I need the next book now!
This is a dual POV story line; so you get to see both sides of the story (princess and seamstress). There are twists, drops, and reveals that have you hooked and wanting to read more. It gives off dystopian and mediviel vibes which i thought was a nice touch. Magic has been outlawed for a millennium, yet the pricess has whispers of enchantment. Then you have our seamstress that finds a book only she can read, and the questions flow! was the truth right in front of them all along?? Definitely check trigger warnings! I loved the disability rep (deaf/chronic ailment). the characters are well developed, and the book does have some open door spice. The book is a thick one at 560ish pages.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a finished copy!
I loved this fantasy book. The magic system, the world building, the politics of court are all amazing and well done. The characters are well-rounded and likable, the villains cruel and evil. But what really drew me into the story was Durvla and her migraines and knitting. As someone who does fiber arts and also has chronic migraines, it was so nice to see my interests and chronic condition represented within. I like how the author didn't make her magically healed just because she is channeling her magic now.
I am really excited for book 2 and see how the characters get out of the pickle they are in, because that cliff hanger .
(FYI, to the author, I still haven't forgiven you for that one character)
I was so fully invested in the characters and the story by the end of the book that I didn’t want the book to end at all. I kept thinking about the characters long after 🥺 This is a dual FMC POV read, so you get to see both sides of the storyline as seen by the princess and her seamstress in a world where magic is forbidden. Even being suspected of having a book that mentions magic gets you arrested. The world feels like a mix of dystopian and medieval adjacent x regency, and might break your heart a time or two. The characters are all well developed and loveable. Oh the way I love Durga and Kilkenny 🥹 The characters in this book really went through some hard times, having to fight for their lives, and against evil leaders. Betrayal and twists made for an exciting and unpredictable read.
💗 Disability Rep 💗 Found Family 💗 Training 💗 Caretaking 💗 Rebellion 💗 Balls with dancing 💗 Broody Cinnamon Roll MMC 💗 m/f, m/f, f/f relationships 💗 Magic Powers 💗 Hidden Identities
I immersive read this with the ebook and the audio at the same time. Loved the audio narrator 💗
🌶️ open door, not very descriptive (many conversations about spice topics) Later books will be spicier *some language
Solace of Dusk is well written with many relatable and diverse characters. While the story dragged on at times, it took that opportunity to build up the characters and relationships. I appreciated that the author didn't hesitate to throw punches. There's a lot of build up here for an interesting series, and an ending fitting for anyone who loves feminine rage.
Durvla is deaf and has an Undesirable as a brother. All she wants is her brother to be safe and to do that, she has to keep him secret and her deafness secret. After a raid gone bad, Durvla gets arrested, but is saved by the Princess to make the Princess a gown for an upcoming event. And if she’s successful, Durvla can go home.
Princess Carys’ mother is dying, and Carys is not ready to be Queen. So she tends to allow herself to do self-destructive activities not caring about consequences. And when she’s caught reading a book in a language no one can speak anymore, she begins to question who she really is and what she’s capable of, and what her mother has been keeping from her all these years.
This is such an amazing story. It is so well written. The story, the adventure, the friendships and family built, the sloooooow burn romance, and the emotions are all so well portrayed, as well as the disability rep. I wish there were more books like this series out there. We need more that are epic fantasies with the right kind of romance and right kind relationships that are built, slowly, and healthy. This has it all.
Durvla is such an amazing person. Someone who doesn’t realize how strong and brave she is, someone who would do anything for her brother. I love the relationships she develops as the story goes on. Her journey is amazing, and after having such a mundane life, and to experience something more gives her the drive to do what she needs to and can to help her brother and others like him.
Carys took me a moment to like. She’s very self-destructive and she knows it, and I couldn’t wrap my brain around by the fact that she knew she could do more or be more of the ruler she could be, but she wouldn’t even try. I know it’s a part of her journey, and what happens to her in here is devastating and should never happen to anyone, and so I know the next book will be rough for her journey, and I’m curious to know how it continues.
This world is unique and so well built. I never felt as if too much was being told at once. There are a lot of characters, and somehow, I kept track of all of them. They’re each so different and unique and I loved learning about each of them, while also despising others. I love the journey everyone is taking, and the beautiful found family being built. And the romance is my favorite, a delicious sloooow burn done right!
This was such an amazing book and I can hardly wait for the next book!
The first half was alright (we were building), but that second half?! Drag show bb. The amount of twists, drops, & reveals had me throwing my dollars at K.V— Babes you turned that.
The audio was so fierce. I loved all the effects & it even had a song? OKAY PRODUCTION. I was vibing. I fw w/ a good ol’ ancient prophecy trope.
Now, the characters were good, but I haven’t really picked a fave yet. Durvla is a mood, but like her I’m still figuring it out lmfao. I like Kilkenny, but I feel like Book 2 is where we’ll be booking tickets to Swoon City ✈️ Right now we’re very much still at home, checking dates & prices.
“Don’t diminish your own pain based on the pain of others.” *He’s def that voice that everyone needs though!! And just the support he’s always shown her, love 💋
Princess Cary’s is def a fireball (lol) & I’m so excited for her growth up ahead ‘cause those last chapters? YAAAASSSS DIVA 💅🏽 Idc if she gets a villain arc at this point either, I’m here for it. They’ve been playing w/ her this whole damn book & I was soooo sick, throw away the whole kingdom at that point. And her Jean Grey moment? Oh, I was seated on several seats.
Overall, I’m excited for Book 2!! This was def a nice intro, esp that second half— Once the ball dropped, there was literally barely any room to breathe in peace. Emma Fischer did an AMAZING job narrating!!
And a HUGE thank you to K.V Meadows for gifting me w/ not only the audio, but a physie 🫶🏽
Quick Summary This book was such a fun ride. Two points of view, hidden magic and wild twists that kept me guessing the whole way through. The characters tugged at my heart, especially Dervla, and the slow-burn yearning was written so beautifully it made me smile and ache at the same time
Reading Thoughts 📔Was great to have the 2 points of view 📔The concept of the story and the undesirables plus the hidden magic was all woven in so well. 📔It was so intriguing to unravel the mystery behind what is happening to both the main characters 📔The yearning between characters was written so well 📔The way Dervla continues to think she is a burden so she doesn’t let anyone get close is heart breaking 📔The twists in this book are extreme, just when you think you know what is happening…bam it all changes
Words that linger 🍷The first thing I need to do is start taking back my power as heir apparent. 🍷 People look at our differences and underestimate us.But if there is one thing I have learned it’s this:let them underestimate you. Then prove them wrong. 🍷 With a slow exhalation, I stop my mind from spiraling and chant all the senses aloud myself over and over. “Loch, Cold, Outdoors, Birds, Citrus.”

"Everything that I’ve ever known has been a lie." (pg 317)
Really loved how this story played out. Durvla and Carys, each from different backgrounds, showed strength of character from the get-go and/or from growth through the trials and tribulations that they faced on their journeys. They both endured so so much! Ugh, and the torture! (Be sure to check your triggers.)
""Ordinary, magical, different, typical, healthy, ailed …” That sounds divine, yet I can’t quite fathom it. The world we live in hates differences— differences are seen as weaknesses." (pg 413)
It is a world of cruelty, heartache, and magic, where magic is considered a threat and treasonous. Secrets, deceit, political intrigue, hidden agendas, hidden identities, budding friendships and romances, death, chaos, plot twists, emotional upheavals, and more!
This book was a crazy rollercoaster 😭 It started out bleak as we followed Durvla, an Undesirable who has tried to mask her disability in order to provide a life for her little brother Taig. Durvla’s life is upended the moment palace raiders find a knitted dress and take Durvla to the royal palace. There an unlike friendship starts between the shy and calm Durvla and the fiery princess Carys. But not everything is the way it looks. Something is brewing under the walls of the castle and by the time Durvla and Carys realise it might be too late.
I’ve written to K. V so many times crying about this book or sharing my theories and there were plety of moments that left me in a 😨😨 state. Amazing work fr fr 🙂↕️🫶🏻 (I want to say a character’s name but that would be a spoiler 💔)
The twists and turns of this book was amazing. I loved every moment of reading. I loved the world building and character development throughout the book. This was an amazing book and I can’t wait to read the next one!
I am not okay right now! I'll have to gather myself first and then come back to leave a better review! But right now I will say ALLLL of my feelings are everywhere & I FREAKING LOOOOOVE CARYS & DURVLA!!!! That cliffhanger hanger is....insane!
Can one person or a group of them change the world? Can they change the rotten foundations and the bias and prejudice that have been infesting the world for generations? I fully believe they can. Dismantling one brick at a time. Trying, failing, trying again. No matter the circumstances, no matter the setbacks. One brick at a time. Revolution starts small, with a spark here and there, until the fire roars. That's what K.V. Meadows has shown us through her story and her characters. One brick at a time.
Solace of Dusk, Book 1 in her Dusk and Embers series, shows us the world and its magic through very different perspectives, from the bottom and from the top. Through the eyes of Durvla, an Undesirable, and through the eyes of Carys, the kingdom's princess. An unlikely pair? It would seem so at first. At a second glance, Durvla and Carys will learn they are more similar than they would believe at first. Pain, suffering, hurt don't choose based on status.
In a world where anything deemed undesirable is punishable, where whispers of magic and fairytales end lives, two girls from very different backgrounds will find common ground, friends, allies, and more. Carys and Durvla face very different fates, even though some invisible threads link them. Their found family and the relationships that will develop will fill your soul with an array of emotions. They are both scared of feeling love and will struggle with it in their own way.
"Don't diminish your own pain based on the pain of others". Truer words couldn't be said of Durvla. Still, amidst it all, she will find friendship, support, and the seeds of love.
Carys, on the other hand, will face her own struggles, and I can only hope her happiness is somewhere out there.
A princess and a seamstress, unlikely friends, linked by destiny. Where will it take them? After that cliffhanger, time will only tell.
It was an honour being K.V.'s ARC reader, and I hope to continue following her on her author's journey.
Durvla Garrick and her 5 year old brother are orphans and Undesirables. Durvla, deaf and suffering from a chronic illness, and Taig with developmental delays are hunted by the Queen’s mercenaries for their disabilities.
Carys fa Rhodri is the reluctant heir to the kingdom. Living with the loss of a brother and a bedridden mother at death’s door, she’s buckling under the pressure of duty.
These women, so vastly different ,meet by an act of fate. They come to find they have more in common than they realize and their bond may save or destroy the world.

I was blessed with an eARC for this book as well as book 2 (which I will be devouring posthaste-because that ending!!!!!)
This book started slow. Time was taken to get the reader familiar with the characters. Relationships develop naturally and characters develop well. The lore and world-building is illustrative and in-depth. I have virtually no qualms with any aspect of this book and would definitely recommend to lovers of high fantasy and romantasy.
This book was such a good and unique fantasy with themes I have not read in other fantasy books before! The world was so well put together and I loved both FMC! The slow burn romance was perfect and the ending has me needing the second book immediately!
I absolutely loved the disability representation in this! Not only does the FMC have debilitating headaches/panic attacks, she's also totally deaf. She is the only caregiver to her little brother (nonverbal autistic) in a world that would see both of them killed 'for the greater good.' Not only is she solely responsible for him, she actually has to hide his existence as well as her disabilities from her neighbors and friends for fear of being reported as an 'undesirable.’
The book is broken down into two POV’s. Durvla (our botanist/knitter) and Carys (the semi-spoiled royal princess). Durvla is sweet and kind, but she's not faultless or overly naive. Carys is (at first) a self-centered and arrogant future queen. Carys rescues Durvla from the death penalty in what may be the first semi-selfless act of her life, and places her into indentured servitude in order to have Durvla knit her the perfect debutante dress.
The contrast between the two main characters is compelling. They are opposites in so many ways; selfless versus selfish, promiscuous versus demisexual, powerful versus powerless, etc. But the similarities between them make their budding friendship understandable - their love of fairy tales, hiding their true selves, and their struggles with crippling anxiety.
The story is truly epic and spends a good deal of time fleshing out the world and the characters. I love how unique the names of both people and places are. So often, authors just say “Oh, it’s high fantasy, so everything is going to sound like it’s Old English, Celtic, or Gaelic. But the names in this book are much more diverse. Some sound English, some German, Slavic Arabic, and even Asian. It’s just a nice touch for creating a truly unique fantasy world.
I was lucky enough to get a space and got an ARC for this book in anticipation of the next. And I'm so glad I did, because this cliffhanger would have driven me completely crazy! That's not a knock against this author, it's just that I got so dang invested in these characters that I feel like my soul would have shattered if I couldn't get the follow up in the next month or so! (Dang you for making me love these people!!!!)
"You're somebody to me. And change starts with one small drop of water with the potential to become a storm."
Solace of Dusk by K.V. Meadows is available now on Kindle Unlimited!
Listen. I devoured this book. Then I sat in stunned silence wondering how the hell this is a debut?!
Solace of Dusk is a sweeping, soul shaking romantasy full of emotional depth, rich world building, and unforgettable characters who broke me open and stitched me back together.🔥
In a world where being different is deadly, we meet Durvla a deaf newly seamstress with a chronic illness, who is just trying to survive under a brutal regime.
Opposite her is Princess Carys, the reluctant royal who’s more interested in rebellion than ruling. When fate throws them together, everything begins to unravel from buried magic to long forgotten truths that could ignite a revolution.
🖤 Found family 🖤 Grumpy Cinnamon Roll MMC (Killjoy, I’m LOOKING at you 😭) 🖤 Fierce, flawed, but powerful women 🖤 Hidden magic, rebellion, secrets, and twists you won’t see coming 🖤 Dual POV (Durvla & Carys = absolute queens) 🖤 Disability and chronic illness rep that is powerful, and real 🖤 Slow burn romance, caretaking, loyalty, betrayal, and strength in vulnerability
This book is dark, emotional, and beautifully written. It doesn’t shy away from hard topics like grief, mental health, torture, systemic oppression but it handles them with care and authenticity.
There were lines that left me breathless, scenes that broke my heart, and moments where I just wanted to scream at the injustice.
And that ending? CLIFF. HANGER. I’m not okay. Book 2, I am BEGGING you to hurry.
This is for you if you love: ✨ Thoughtful disability rep + fierce girls with swords ✨ A story that means something
🩶 A huge thank you to @authorkvmeadows & @rrbooktours for the ARC + bookmail! I will be screaming about this series forever. I’ve got a new auto-buy author right here. 🫶
This book gave me far more than I expected. We have a bleak world where those with disabilities are considered... Undesirables. In the villages raids happen by those looking for things that don't belong in their world such as magical items, practicing magic, Undesirables and more. Our FMC happens to be deaf and uses sign language and reads lips. She has to do everything possible to keep this unknown lest she be turned in. She takes care of her little brother as well who would also be on the list as an Undesirable. This isn't a nice world, it's a place where those who already struggle must do what they can to survive, or they die.
During a random raid to their village she is captured and taken as there is no way a botanist could craft something as she did. Taken from her home, her brother, and thrown into an even more perilous world... the Mainland. Her brother is left alone hidden in a trap door, her best friend left to care for him. Her? Captured, branded, and now having to work even harder in a world that is meant to work against her.
Fairytales, supposed magic, a simple dress made by a botanist are just a few things that could get you killed or confess and be sent to the to the Veilguards, which is still a death sentence really... Follow The journey of Durvla and Carys, discover a world of magic, intrigue, and emotion that leaves you needing more.
I found the characters to be easily lovable and of course the ones you just completely detest. The depth everyone has I feel was given life with the narrator who did make a point to differentiate who was speaking and I enjoyed it. I love the view we get of the world, the struggles the FMC must go through and of course learning that there is far more in their world that none of them knew.
I absolutely love the representation throughout this book! The story itself is captivating, and the narrator did a great job. I will definitely be giving this one another listen to and adding it to my bookshelf.
This is absolutely, hands down, the greatest thing I’ve read in 2025. Incredible diversity and representation. I loved all of these characters and it feels like a home. The story moves smoothly, it’s exciting and keeps the reader engaged. The romance is a veryyyyy slow but satisfying burn. This is amazing. Five stars, 10 out of 10, strongly recommend

I received a copy of this book alongside the eARC for the sequel as result of a giveaway from the author and a bookstagrammer (@luna.reads.things on Instagram). After the tsunami that was the Twilight Saga, I was in the mood for something fresh. Nothing could be fresher than a book I knew nothing about that ended up on my doorstep, so in I dove.
This is an epic fantasy novel centering around the POV of two very strong female leads. One hot headed fireball, and the quieter strong survivor. This book has some great world building. In this world, there has been a cleansing of "Undesirables" - those accused of having magic but are presented as people with disabilities (stay with me, this is for a reason). Our first main character, Durvla, is deaf and suffers from an unnamed chronic illness. She is living for her brother, whom I speculate is autistic. She must do everything in her power to protect him and hide him from the strong arm of the kingdom's mercenaries. Durvla is caught, not for her brother, but instead over perceived theft of her own knitting.
At the heart of our kingdom, we have Princess Carys. Her mother is dying and she is left with the weight of choosing a husband and running the kingdom. She is a messy young woman who is struggling with being a princess that needs to take charge and a young girl who is losing her mom. Carys takes out her frustrations with alcohol and sex with many different characters (bi-representation, hell yeah). There are memories she is missing and when the reveal themselves, it turns everyone's world upside down.
I loved this. Love love loved this. There is excellent disability and LGBTQ+ representation. There is a variety of different racial presentation in the characters. The burn is slow but there is movement every step of the way. I was absolutely hooked; there was no way I was going to put this down unless I absolutely had to (I was regretfully very busy when I read this and I hated that). This is 100% my favorite book of 2025 and it is quite the buzzer beater. I now have my hands on a physical copy of the sequel, and I will be diving into that soon.
I encourage you to read this, blog visitor. If fantasy and magic is your vibe, this is for you. If you love strong female leads, this is for you. If you want to see yourself in a fantasy book with a disability, a sexual orientation, personal representation in skin and hair type, this is for you.
I had the pleasure of receiving an early audiobook of this novel for my honest review.
There were a lot of things I loved about this book. The world-building alone is top notch. It had depth and felt authentic to the setting in the best way possible. I also loved Meadows writing style in how seamlessly the words flowed from the pages. Character development was top notch, especially for the side characters, which I enjoyed more than the mains. I do love how the author highlights under-represented characters. It made the story feel more relatable to the modern world.
Now for my discrepancies and reasons for them.
It is VERY DIFFICULT for me to be invested in a novel of this magnitude if there is not enough high-stakes unpredictability to keep me interested. This, unfortunately did not hit the mark. Most of the 'ah-ha' moments were very easy to figure out, which mitigated the impact for me. Some moments were too quick to conclude while others took a very long time. The protagonists themselves were far less interesting than the side characters were. Both their character arcs were very similar, the only difference being one was a princess and one was not. This made a lot of those 'ah-ha' moments feel overdone and less 'edge of my seat' anticipating.
I wished we had the perspective of someone IN IT and not just of those who had no idea their part to play in this unfolding prophecy. If we were able to see that, Kilkenny or even Iwan, I think it would have made for a much more compelling story. More high stakes and more unpredicable moments.
There were make-or-breaks for me, which is why my rating is only 3 stars. BUT I do think this could be someone's next favorite fantasy series. It has all the ingredients needed to continue the epic journey Meadows is unfolding. It just was not my cup of tea.
Solace of Dusk is a slow burn, in more ways than one. Following the vastly different lives of two women brought together in strange circumstances, the book starts slowly, teasing political intrigue while masterfully weaving a layered court and country.
Durvla, a so-called "Undesirable" is arrested for petty theft and through a series of strange events she ends up in the service of the Princess. Her one goal is to get home to her brother - another Undesirable, who she has taken care of since their parents' death.
Princess Carys, stone cold and bored, begins through Durvla's companionship to see that the kingdom is not as it seems from within the walls of the palace.
As the two girls' lives are intertwined, both girls discover hidden pieces of themselves which come to a head about halfway through when everything is turned upside down.
I was never bored by this book. Frustrated by the Princess? Yes. Annoyed at Durvla's self control when it comes to the very attractive, secretive guard? Also yes.
The representation in this book alone makes it worth reading, featuring a Deaf main character and countless others with disabilities - hidden or otherwise, without falling on the trope that they need to be fixed or healed.
I laughed, eyerolled, and teared up while reading this book.
My one annoyance is that this book ends on a complete cliffhanger!!!
Oh, I do have one small criticism, and that is that while many of the names are Gaelic/Celtic and spelled properly, a few spellings are changed for easier pronunciation. I feel like this kind of diminishes their effect -- ie, Eefa instead of Aoife.
Regardless, I cannot wait for the second installment.
Thank you to KV Meadows for the Advance Readers Copy.

This is the first book in Dusk and Embers, a new adult epic romantasy series. I received a review copy and my thoughts are my own. Thank you to author and R&R Book Tours for my paperback review copy.
Tropes and themes include:
✨Inspired by Celtic & Norse lore
✨Two FMCs and two MMCs
✨Disability/neurodiversity representation
✨Slowburn
✨Emotional connections
✨Found family
✨Outlawed magic
✨Rebellion
✨Caretaking
Rating: 4/5 Stars 1/5 Flames
The Lovely: I loved the characters in this story, especially their emotional connections/relationships and the found family aspect. I thought at first having two couples would be chaotic but it was smoothly done. I also really liked the disability representation and how one of the FMC’s was the caretaker of her autistic brother (which is my experience).
The Mundane: While I appreciate how much happened in the book, the middle third (ish) felt a bit drawn out and slower paced. It seemed like we saw a fair amount of repetition of actions, whereas I would have liked to see the FMCs spending more time with the two MMCs.
Recommendation: I was drawn to this book for the disability representation, in particular the autism, as that’s an important topic for me. I thought it was portrayed in a realistic and respective manner, at least based on my own experiences. I’m excited to see where the story goes next and hope to see the FMCs’ paths cross again. Book two is expected to be released in November of 2025. If you like a romantasy with a focus on emotional connections and found family, I think you would like this book.
-When I first got into this book, I needed a little time to adjust and comprehend everything that was going on. It wasn’t really what I expected when I read the premise, it’s not misleading or anything but I guess I just interpreted it differently. The story was still interesting with interesting plot lines and world building. What I am confused about is how everything came to the point where they are now. it’s a world that is quite devastating especially towards certain groups of people and the princess seems to be against that, but her mother also doesn’t seem to be the type to enforce that either. Other than that, everything was quite interesting. Though c I have to admit that I wasn’t never fully invested in both PoVs at the same time. I felt like Durvla’s story was waiting when she had done her job at the castle but then I ended up being more invested in her story.
-The characters were great. I would have loved to see more development before all of them and see more of each person individually. I felt like Tiernan came in quite late but I really liked him. Although he did feel a bit textbook broody guard at times rather than his own character. I was fully invested in his and Durvla’s relationship.
-The ending is something that kept me on my toes. I wasn’t exactly hooked during the entirety of the book. But the ending was definitely a promising part of the story and I would love to see to develop into a great series.
K.V. Meadow's debut novel, "Solace of Dusk," the first book in the Dusk and Embers series, summons readers into a captivating world overflowing with magic. In it, the lives of two young women—Durvla and Carys—unfold in stark contrast. Durvla, marginalized and labeled as Undesirable, struggles against a society that views her with disdain and fear. In comparison, Carys, the regal princess of the kingdom, lives a life of privilege and expectation, confined by the ornate walls of her royal duties. Initially, they may seem like an unlikely pair, separated by their vastly different social standings and experiences.
However, as their paths begin to intertwine, they discover profound and unexpected commonalities that challenge their preconceived notions about each other. Through shared moments of pain and suffering, the barriers that define their worlds begin to dissolve, revealing the universal truths of humanity that connect them both. This poignant exploration highlights their struggles and emphasizes that, regardless of status, the weight of hardship and the desire for understanding can transcend all divides.
I loved the representation of both physical and mental disabilities throughout this book. I struggle with chronic illnesses and disabilities, so I genuinely appreciate this representation.
I am honored to be on K.V.'s ARC team and cannot wait to read book 2
Solace of Dusk by K.V. Meadows is everything I crave in a fantasy novel—rich prose, aching vulnerability, and a slow-blooming intrigue that kept me turning pages deep into the night.
Durvla Garrick is a standout heroine—deaf, chronically ill, and resilient in a world that deems her very existence a crime. Her sharp mind and guarded heart make her easy to root for, especially when fate places her in the middle of court politics, an enigmatic guard, and a reluctant princess on the verge of the throne. The tension between Durvla and Tiernan Kilkenny is simmering perfection, full of wary glances and reluctant trust.
And then there’s Princess Carys, whose journey of self-discovery is steeped in forgotten magic, crumbling legacy, and the aching weight of grief. Her inner battle—torn between duty and the echoes of forbidden magic—is beautifully written, making her chapters equally captivating.
Meadows masterfully weaves themes of power, ableism, and identity through a story that feels both intimate and epic. The worldbuilding is immersive, with a kingdom on the brink of collapse, a dying queen, and whispers of a prophecy just waiting to ignite.
If you love stories about hidden magic, political intrigue, unlikely allies, and protagonists who refuse to be defined by their limitations, Solace of Dusk is a must-read. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next.
Wow, just wow. The storytelling for Solace of Dusk is just amazing! I fell in love with this world and these characters, I just didn't want to put this book down! Absolutely amazing.
We get two POVs, Carys and Durvla and both were just so well written. Both have suffered loss and pain and were put in positions they were not fully prepared for. Carys seems to be a carefree maybe a bit spoiled princess at the beginning but as the story continues, there's a dark evil at play and betrayals come at her from everywhere. The absolute plot twist at the second half of the book left me stunned, just stunned. I didn't see it coming at all.
Durvla has a loss of hearing, which I feel was written so well. She starts off with having a fairly simple life and then all chaos breaks loose, she is thrust into Carys ' life and mysteries of her past come to surface. She also meets Tiernan, one of Carys ' guards and oh man, he's broody and I just love him so much.
The budding relationship between Durvla and Tiernan is just so sweet and wholesome. I love them together and he thinks nothing about her should change and I love that.
Now the ending of this book was a massive cliffhanger!! Like my emotions were all over the place. I was crying, I was mad, I didn't know what to think! And the last line. Oh man, I absolutely need book 2 immediately because I need to know what happens!!

First of all, I cannot believe this is a debut!! This incredible story is beautiful and captivating until the very last page. There are two FMCs - Durvla: a chronic illness warrior and deaf Undesirable, big sister, botanist with a sewing hobby. And Carys: a loving, insecure, and misunderstood princess who is way too immature to take the throne, with all her drinking and bedding of the royal staff. These two are more likely to be rivals than friends, but find themselves fated together in a precarious situation. This story takes you on an adventure where magic is a secret, the royal officials are up to no good, and people are imprisoned and executed for petty crimes and having disabilities. The friendships and romance between characters is perfection. The slow burn is wonderfully slooooooow burning! The plot twists and betrayals are unexpected, and will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait to see what happens with these characters in the next one!
