DI Gravel and his daughter, Emily, are oblivious to the terrible danger she is in when she accepts a job working for the solicitor Charles Turner.
Meanwhile, Gravel is on the hunt for a serial killer. And when Emily becomes the killer’s latest obsession, the murderer will stop at nothing to make his grotesque fantasies reality. But as further bodies are discovered, the killer seeks to befriend DI Gravel and misdirect his investigation.
How can you catch a killer who is hiding in plain sight? Can DI Gravel and Emily come away from this case with both their lives intact?

4.5* Attention: Fans of dark thrillers - this one’s for you!
Detective inspector Grav is back, and just as surly as ever! (You gotta’ love him). He’s hot on the trail of a serial killer preying on young women. Can he slap the cuffs on this crazed maniac before he finds another victim?
Grav’s daughter Emily returns home after law school, moving back in with dad while she works to get back on her feet. Now things are looking up after she has a timely stroke of luck. Emily just landed a job with one of the most prominent attorneys in town.
Here’s the kicker. Charles Turner, attorney at law and new boss, has a hidden side that no one is aware of…until now. It appears that the esteemed Mr. Turner craves something more from office relationships than simply employer/employee. And he’s now set his sights squarely on the new hire Emily. He has no intention of taking no for an answer.
Author John Nicholl has followed up his last great police procedural, A Mind to Kill, with another fantastic spellbinder. While this book could easily be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend you go back and read the aforementioned. His main character Grav, takes a backseat at times in this book as the focus remains on the killer at large. Could retirement (or worse) be around the corner for Grav? I really hope not! Fingers crossed!!
This is truly a chilling thriller that will leave you reading late into the night. (With the lights on bright!) You will question your pre-conceived judgements on who can truly be trusted. Eerie, dark and altogether creepy.
Thank you to John Nicholl for providing an ARC for me to read in exchange for an honest review.
'Sometimes evil wears a suit'........ and oh my is this guy evil! I love John Nicholl's books, they seem to get better and better with every new one he writes. "A Cold Cold Heart" - the latest in the DI Gravel series - is a fantastic police procedural/psychological thriller incorporating a narcissistic serial killer that really leaves you wanting to check over your shoulder. I was glued to the pages, it was so gripping and entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. Detective Inspector Gareth Gravel is on the hunt for a sadistic predatory serial killer. When his daughter Emily becomes the killer's latest obsession, the killer will stop at nothing to make his grotesque fantasies reality. As more bodies are discovered and with the killer misdirecting the investigation, can DI Gravel solve the identity of who the killer is in time to save the next victim and can Emily escape his clutches? Although you suspect what is coming and you are fully aware as to who the killer is from the start it doesn't make it any the less tense or suspenseful and depicting the evils of humanity at its worst this really is a brilliantly plotted book with a nail-biting climatic end. The killer's character has been fabulously created and is very realistic hiding in plain sight and since the author uses his own vast experience in law enforcement to create a true to life police procedural featuring some great characters, spine tingling moments and a torture chamber hidden in the killer's house this all combines to make a first rate novel that will send chills down your spine. I do like a menacing and sadistic serial killer in my stories (don't know what that says about me) but this book fitted the bill perfectly and I highly recommend "A Cold Cold Heart" along with all of John Nicholl's previous five star novels!
John Nicholl is back with another spine-tinging psychological thriller that will keep the reader hooked until the final sentence. A number of young women have turned up murdered, strangled by hand and dressed in some vintage outfits. West Wales Police takes up the investigation, headed by DI Gareth Gravel, who is still trying to balance work and his personal life. When Gravel receives a surprise visit from his daughter, Emily, he is overjoyed, especially when she reveals that she’s taken a local job as a solicitor. As the investigation heats up, Gravel suffers a health crisis that pushes him to the sidelines and allows his colleague, DS Laura Kesey, to serve as temporary point-person. Kesey uncovers some interesting information from Emily that helps point the case in a specific direction, one that Gravel cannot stomach while he remains bedridden. With a killer on the loose, their home a veritable torture chamber, and more bodies piling up, everyone soon realises that Emily’s gone missing. It will be up to Kesey to solve this horrific case and locate Emily, while keeping DI Gravel from making a rash decision that could pave the way to his permanent departure from the police force. Nicholl does not falter whatsoever in this quick read, that allows the reader to feel the full gamut of emotions. Readers who have indulged in Nicholl’s work beforehand, as well as those who love a psychological thriller with a cat-and-mouse aspect, will thoroughly enjoy this book and likely push through in a sitting or two.
I have been a Nicholl fan since I sped through his debut novel, which caught me off guard. Writing about what he knows best, Nicholl utilises the depths of despair to his advantage and produces well-paced thrillers, pushing good and evil together at every turn. DI Gravel does not make his debut here, though series fans will know that he is a tough as rocks copper that places the public above his own well-being, as is clear throughout the narrative here. Giving DS Kesey some of the spotlight will surely help pave the way for future series pieces, should some of the underlying tones of the narrative prove correct. Nicholl is able to utilise a vast array of characters to pull the story together and keep the readers curious throughout. Introducing the killer in the early stages might have been a gamble for some, but Nicholl allows the reader to see the sick development of a killer blossom, turning what might have been a hunt for a serial killer into a twisted game of cat-and-mouse, with the two sides pushing slightly under the pressure. Nicholl’s writing is such that the story flows swiftly and the chapters melt away, leaving the reader to want ‘a little more’ before bookmarking their progress. Readers are in for a serious treat should they take the time to explore this piece and the entire John Nicholl collection.
Kudos, Mr. Nicholl, for always having some new spin to offer your fans. Your writing is stellar and you capture the nuances of the genre so effortlessly.
One of my favourite authors have smashed through the barriers again. The boundaries that keep an author alive and interesting and a reader eager to not put the book down until the very last page.
What a plot!
John Nicholl throws that 'authors' web over the reader, captures us and never lets us out of his claws until the end, and still leaves us gasping at the end. He traps you in that web and you never know what to expect, you sit there in anticipation.
This is the best description I can give about how this book made me feel.
We have revisited Grav from previous books, although this is completely a standalone, and can be read as such, but like any other books written who has the same theme of a character we can more insight as each book is written, into the Detective or Inspector in each book. This was the case in this read, Garv is on this case, but hes not a well man.
Emily is back living at home after the breakup of the love of her life.
There's a killer on the loose.
As with this authors books we know who the killer is. He's an every day kind of fella, well groomed, seems to be an attraction to the opposite sex. Nothing that really makes him visibly stand out.
I love how this author opens the villain in his books to us. Its like a man with a can opener turning slowly to reveal its contents underneath, and bit by bit the horrid smell emits from it showing up a disgusting mess. That's what I find with this authors writing, he reveals and uncovers the 'baddy' to us, but at the same time, reveals reasons that have made them this way, not that its an excuse.
When the villain was relating his past to Emily I was drawn in or a mini secound, feeling sorry for him until I shuck myself up and said "What the hell", hes a killer!
This man, this excuse for a human being and what he did, how he committed his crimes, his murders, his killings, I hardly wanted to turn the pages unless I got blood on my hands too.
John Nicholl really knows how to weave a story, how to interwave a great plot for us readers.
Since his debut novel I haven't missed one of his releases. I'm waiting for him to write one I don't like, its not happened yet!
If you love a good thriller, if you don't mind reading what makes a villain tick, if you don't mind staying up late reading because you can't put the book down, then this is definitely for you.
My thanks to Bloodhound books for my early copy. My thoughts are my own.
Though not designated a series, Scottish author John Nicholl’s five novels so far all include Detective Inspector Gareth (Grav) Gravel. I love Grav and he is one of the main reasons I always look forward to Mr. Nicholl’s books.
In A Cold Cold Heart, Grav takes a bit of a backseat as much of the spotlight is on Charles Turner, serial killer of young women. I have to admit that disappointed me, as I can’t get enough of Grav. Not only that, but Turner was a bit too Galbraithian for me—he very much reminded me of David Galbraith, the despicable baddie of Mr. Nicholl first two novels. Don’t get me wrong, Mr. Nicholl can certainly write a first class baddie, but I just had such an intense dislike for this guy Turner to want to spend much time with him. He did not have one ounce of any sort of redeeming factor, and frankly, I wanted him out of Grav’s book!! Point is, this is a personal dislike on my part. I’m sure others will appreciate Turner as the fabulously wretched character he is.
With Turner hogging a lot of the airtime, mainly in the first half of the book, it takes a while for the police procedural to take center stage. Mr. Nicholl does a fine police procedural and that part I greatly enjoyed. Not only is there DI Grav Gravel, but also the highly likeable DS Laura Kesey (in a big role), and the imposing Detective Chief Superintendent Hannah Davies. DS Kesey let us in on a personal secret this time, and DCS Davies, though always trying to get Grav to retire, is again her admirable self.
I have to give this novel two grades. Two stars for Turner’s role and 4 stars for the Grav/Kesey/Davies police procedural part. This averages out to 3, but its real score is 3.5 because I loved the latter part more than I disliked the former part. And rounded up to 4 stars for the same reason.
I recommend this book to all thriller fans. It actually does fine as a stand alone, but in my opinion does better if the other books, or at least A Mind to Kill, are read first.
Finally, congratulations to John Nicoll for not only landing a contract with Bloodhound Books, but for his fine independent career up until this point. I’m looking forward to his next novel!
Many thanks to John Nicoll for sending me an ARC of this novel. Opinions are mine alone and are unbiased in any way.
DI Gavel is on the hunt for the sadistic killer of young women. Whoever he is, he's smart, he's crafty, and he really, really enjoys mentally and physically torturing his victims before finally killing them. None of his victims have anything in common ... other than they somewhat remind him of his mother.
When Gavel's adult daughter moves back home to take a position with an attorney's office, they are both delighted. He warns her time and time again ... please be careful. His daughter, Emily, looks just a tad like the victims that have been discovered.
The reader knows from the very beginning who the killer is. What makes this a killer book? As he talks to his intended victim, he's very charming, and witty, and funny. But while he's talking, the reader sees exactly what he's thinking ... and it's ugly and evil and downright frightening.
And while Gavel is frustrated at not finding the killer, when the human monster turns his attention to Gavel's daughter, he takes it very, very personally .. at great risk to his own health.
This author is definitely one to follow. I've found all his books to be well-written, with characters that will stay in your memory .. especially when the lights go out.
Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books / Netgalley for the advance digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A COLD COLD HEART is the new thriller by bestselling crime author, John Nicholl that is totally brilliant…his best book ever in my estimation. I have read all of his books and he is one of my favourite authors, that always provides an intense read, and naturally appeals to a wide audience. I don’t know how he does it…this talented author gets better with every book!
For those of you who know me…and for those that don’t, I love reading mystery, suspense, crime, psychological thrillers, a real puzzle, where I am able to get in the evil mind of a serial killer/a dangerous predator, to see why he does what he does.
“A STUNNING THRILLER YOU WON’T WANT TO PUT DOWN.”
A Cold Cold Heart is a dark and disturbing book that deals with the subject of a serial killer…the hunt for a vicious killer of young women. It is not for the faint-hearted, but it is necessary to show that these “people” can lurk anywhere…and you would never suspect or know.
Five young women have died recently-murdered!
DI Gareth (Grav) Gravel is the officer in charge of a murder investigation case, along with the help of assistant Detective Sergeant Laura Kesey. Gravel is on the hunt for a serial killer. A killer is on the loose!
The serial killer's identity was revealed early in the book. I was initially concerned that this would take some pleasure out of reading this book, but in this case, it worked really well. As a read, I could only bite my nails, as the tension was ramped up. The killer abducts his victims, imprisons them, and kills them where and when he wants too…to be easily discovered.
DI Gravel and his daughter Emily are oblivious to the terrible danger she is in when she accepts a job working for the solicitor Charles Turner.
When Emily becomes the killer’s latest obsession, the murderer will stop at nothing to make his grotesque fantasies reality.
But as further bodies are discovered, the killer seeks to befriend DI Gravel and misdirect his investigation. "Sometimes evil wears a suit…"
This is one novel that you will not forget too readily…and one that I highly recommend!
Many thanks to Bloodhound Books via Netgalley for my copy. I highly recommend you pre-order this one if you like your crime thrillers dark and disturbing.
Expected publication: January 31st 2018 by Bloodhound Books
A Cold Cold heart is a fast paced Thriller that is fresh, gripping, addictive and will leave you turning pages into the early hours.
What I loved most about this book was the fact that the killer was divulged straight away. I don't think I have ever read a thriller where the killer is revealed within the first few chapters. But I loved it. It was very very clever and I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh take on this thriller. It meant that instead of concentrating on who the killer was I could really enjoy the thought process of the killer and why he was killing.
I enjoyed the little inner most thoughts of the killer. When he was having conversations you would get lil snippets into his mind. It was perfect and chilling as it almost gave away what he might do.
This book was the perfect cat and mouse chase. The detectives trying to catch the serial killer. Whilst the killer has inside knowledge making him always one step ahead. It was actually quite scary to think this could actually happen!
I haven't written anything about the characters as I don't want to ruin the momentum of the story. We all know the serial killer has a Cold, Cold Heart, making it the perfect title.
Although the killer was divulged straight away it didn't stop you from getting all the thoughts and feelings you get from reading Thrillers. I still got the shivers, it still made my heart race, I still enjoyed trying to work out why the killer was killing, you was still given all the twisted scenes leading up to the kill, it still played with my emotions and kept me reading till the early hours.
I also just want to mention how fantastic the cover is!
If you are looking for a fresh new Thriller, that is gripping, Creepy, fast paced, short addictive chapters, that keep you reading till the early hours. Then this is definitely the book for you!!
100% Reccomend A Cold Cold Heart!
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This was a fantastic read,I really enjoy this authors books.Love to read crime books with serial killers. DI Grav daughter is in danger,Grav lifestyle isnt great and he loves his job hes on a case women are being murdered and killer is right under there nose...I was hooked from the start and looking forward to reading more of his books..The only criticism could of added abit more to the ending...
I definitely am a lover of a good mystery, thriller or suspense novel. Recently, I finished what I thought was a very good book written by an author who used to write/edit puzzles. The light bulb went off in my head and I realized what draws me so strongly to this genre. I love finding clues, puzzling them out and in a very good story, being wrong more often than right and figuring out how the author and my brain led me astray. I was slightly concerned when I realized the serial killer's identity was revealed early in the book. There wouldn't be any clues for me to ponder or incorrect suspect guesses leading up to that pivotal reveal moment. Fortunately, the police attempt to identify and catch the killer kept me quite engaged and the killer's POV showing both his false face as well as the evil that lurked inside him kept me flipping pages, hoping he would be unmasked. So I did have two mysteries to consider, how did he become this loathsome man and would he be caught before there were many more victims. A gripping story and one that is too often encountered in the real world. The evil that walks among is often disguised behind an attractive facade. Two things to note, it is as I said a serial killer story and what happens to the victims is graphic and horrific and there is quite a bit of profanity used throughout the story. As long as neither of those things makes you decide not to finish a book, the author's writing style made for an intense read. My first John Nicholl book and not my last. Thank you, Mr. Nicholl, Bloodhound Books and NetGalley for the digital ARC to read and review. Books like this one have made me realize I don't need nearly as much sleep as I thought.
I have read all of this authors books and he never fails to create a horrible and extremely unlikeable character in them. In fact White Is The Coldest Colour, has one of my most hated characters ever in it! The serial killer in A Cold Cold Heart certainly gives him a run for his money in this book though.
If you have read some of the authors books you may recognise DI Gravel. Don’t worry though as this book is a total stand alone and you don’t have to have read any others before this one. I would love the author to start or turn the books into a crime series though as DI Gravel is a great character and he is one I would happily read more books with him in.
The case that DI Gravel finds himself working on is an horrific one. As the victims are all young females, he fears for the safety of his daughter, and him and his team are very much racing to catch the killer.
This is one of those stories where the reader knows very early on who the serial killer is. It makes it even more frustrating as at times I wanted to scream out who it was so that the police could grab them before they took anyone else’s life. It was certainly some gripping stuff though seeing the police close in on them.
A Cold Cold Heart is a book that will definitely have you feeling like someone has walked over your grave. It is dark, gripping and totally had me on the edge of my seat. Another great read by an author who is vast becoming one of my go to authors whose books I will always turn to when I want a book that will have me hooked throughout as he hasn’t let me down once.
This is the third book in the DI Gravel series by author John Nichol. Another dark thriller and a new case for DI Gravel to investigate. This time he is on the hunt for a serial killer who is raping and murdering young women. When the latest victim is discovered by the river it appears that the killer may have made an error and left evidence at the scene. But is everything as it appears?
This is a fast paced, dark police procedural that is a page turner. What this novel lacks in the finer points of writing is made up from the excitement and blood curdling plot. I really enjoy John Nichol novels, gritty, dark police procedurals where maybe the author uses a little bit of his experiences from a past career.
You can't judge a book by its cover because even evil can wear the mask of trustworthiness. DI Gravel is on the hunt for what could be his most diabolical killer ever and this time, the danger is far too close to his heart.
Young women are going missing, when found, their bodies tell a heinous tale of torture, abuse and the Hell they endured in their final moments. With the pressure on, Gravel is driven to capture the monster if it is the last thing he does and it just might be…
Meanwhile, Gravel’s daughter Emily has come home, taking a job with a respected attorney Charles Turner. Charming, attractive and successful, Turner has his eye on Emily as more than an employee. Could love be in the air for the crusty detective’s daughter? Could Turner be the prince charming she needs in her life or will her association with him make her a target for the sadistic killer?
Sometimes the clues are lying in plain sight, but even the best of the best can miss the obvious… John Nicholl is back, full of his signature grit, gruesome scenes that lay bare the worst that humans can do to one another without flinching once. A COLD COLD HEART is beyond raw and edgy. It is a twisted tale of hell on earth, unleashed, unchecked and insane. You will ask yourself if the monster is actually another victim. You will ask how any person could be so depraved. You will demand his demise, not only to save the lives of innocents, but to put him out of his own misery. You will, like DI Gravel, demand justice. That is a sign of an author who knows his craft, knows how to drag us in and hold us captive to the very end.
Dark, chaotic and riveting, once again, John Nicholl gives us reading that cannot be forgotten, vivid scenes not for the faint of heart, and a look at the underbelly of life that is equally terrifying and far too real to dismiss.
I received a complimentary ARC edition from John Nicholl! If you are looking for that read that messes with your head and sense of security, this is it. Highly recommended adult reading.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bloodhound Books for a review copy of A Cold, Cold Heart, a police procedural set in Wales featuring DI Gareth "Grav" Gravel.
When the team is called out to a dead body it becomes apparent that it is another in a series. Someone is dressing young women in 50s clothing, raping, strangling and leaving them in local beauty spots.
I thoroughly enjoyed A Cold, Cold Heart which is an absorbing read with a clever plot. It grabbed my attention from the start when solicitor Charles Turner gives his client some unorthodox information and I could feel my jaw dropping as I read it! Turner, of course, is the killer, a fact the author establishes early in the novel. I'm not always a fan of this early reveal approach but it works really well here as Turner fastens his attention on his new trainee, Grav's daughter Emily. The cat and mouse game he plays with the uneasy but unwitting Emily is tense and compelling. I read the novel in one sitting, unable to put it down.
I was a bit disappointed in the characterisation which is rather by the numbers but it's maybe not so important in a plot driven novel. Grav eats unhealthily, drinks too much and is massively overweight but smart and dedicated. He has a good relationship with his number 2 DS Laura Kesey who is also smart and dedicated but, as a kick boxer, much healthier. I didn't get a good feel for Emily and feel she is only a plot device but I feel the author missed a trick with Charles Turner who is a stereotypical callous psychopath.
It should be noted that there is a lot of bad language and some graphic descriptions of the young women's ordeals in the novel so it may not be for the faint hearted. I think it adds realism.
A Cold, Cold Heart is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
A Cold, Cold Heart is a convincing and powerful portrayal of a serial killer who applies the trusted hunter and prey formula to score a twisted victory over their victims. It provides a merciless addition of another nauseatingly repellent character to this author’s established repertoire.
The killer’s identity is revealed to readers at the start and the remainder of the story focusses on establishing their lethal agenda. As many contradictions hinder the progress of the investigation that’s easier said than done! An added kick to the teeth is the lead DI’s health concerns, which the smarmy, slap-worthy suspect uses to achieve maximum suffering.
Victims are subjected to a sadistic physical and mental ordeal while in the killer’s company. This is often grim and graphic in equal measure, a description fitting all of the killer’s indulgences as they torment their 'guest' to death.
If ever there was a book that lives up to its title it’s A Cold, Cold Heart, as it’s a chiller of a psychological thriller.
(I’d like to thank the author for providing a digital copy of this title which I chose to voluntarily read and review).
I’ve read and reviewed John Nicholl’s books before and to say he has a dark and vivid imagination is an understatement, so I always look forward to a new novel by this author as to be frank I’m never quite sure how dark or disturbing it’s going to be, but one thing I’m guaranteed it’s bound to be a “hell of a read”. Everything you need to know is in the book description, so I’m definitely not going to “rehash” the plot details, suffice to say in A Cold Cold Heart DI Gravel is on the hunt for a serial killer, a killer who is by definition a monster of the worse kind.
A word of warning for the feint hearted A Cold Cold Heart does contain some graphic descriptions which some readers may find distressing. The author has a knack of creating the most despicable characters, he is able to get inside the dark recess of his characters mind, so the reader is very much privy to the Killers thoughts and reasoning which means this book sometimes makes for an uncomfortable and a very chilling read, fortunately for me I do love this type of read.
If you have read some of this authors previous books you may recognise DI Gravel (although fear not this book can be read as a standalone) he isn’t your usual stereotypical detective, he’s overweight, heading for retirement, suffers with arthritis and angina, he’s sarcastic with a jaded opinion of the legal system and the killers he chases, but he’s like a breath of fresh as he tramples through crime scenes and blunders his way through witness interviews! You can help but warm to him.
From the beginning you know who the killer so there’s no mystery there, now sometimes this can spoil my enjoyment of a crime thriller as I do like to try and work out who the killer is and his motives. Fortunately the killer is such a sick individual I found the suspense came from wanting the killer to slip up and see justice served. Although not highly original in plot John Nicholl adds his own unique signature to A Cold Cold Heart by incorporating a character study of a serial killer who will send chills down your spine. All in all A Cold Cold Heart made for a gripping and nail biting read. Highly recommended if you like your crime thrillers on the dark and disturbing side.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the advanced ebook copy and the blog blitz spot!
Whenever I see new books coming out from Bloodhound I know that I'm going to be sucked right in! This was my introduction to John Nicholl and I need to go back and read more of his backlog. A COLD COLD HEART was gripping and had me turning the pages (tapping the screen?) to see what would happen next in this police procedural/serial killer thriller.
DI Gravel and his daughter Emily don't realize the real danger they are in. After Emily accepts a position working for Charles Turner, their lives are forever altered. She is completely oblivious to the risk she has put herself in.
Meanwhile, DI Gravel is on a murder investigation, but as more bodies begin to surface, he quickly realizes that he's tracking a serial killer. All signs point to his daughter Emily being the next target to satisfy the killer's grotesque inner fantasies. The twist? The killer attempts to befriend Gravel in order to throw him off his trail. With the killer hiding in plain sight, how will Gravel and Emily be able to make it out alive?
I think this always makes for the best kind of serial killer thriller. You know who the killer is but the investigator is none the wiser because of how normal and charming they seem. That's the most terrifying of all - not all serial killers are crazed maniacs. This definitely gave me Ted Bundy vibes, just for the simple fact that he was charming, charismatic, and no one suspected him. Despite knowing how the killer is, that didn't take away from the suspense of the story.
Overall, if you're looking for an engrossing serial killer thriller then you'll need to pick up A COLD COLD HEART. With a dash of cat and mouse elements you'll definitely want to clear your schedule before starting.
I read paperback version with the same ISBN number as ebook . The paperback has ISBN number 9781912175895 & the ebook has the same ISBN number. I have pointed this out to Goodreads. If you look on Amazon the paperback has the same ISBN number as I have on my paperback 9781912175895. I only read paperbacks or hardbacks. I never read any digital format. Twitter@favouritenovels John Nicholl is my favourite author. I'm on my blended knee here. If you are going to buy one thriller make sure it's A Cold Cold Heart as it's one of those thrillers everyone will be talking about. You would never guess that a solicitor in a suit would give a client ill advised information. What the solicitor tell his client to do is just jaw dropping. A masterpiece novel not to be missed. I've read Bully Boy Blue that I highly recommend and I've read A Mind To Kill that once again I highly recommend. With an addictive cast of characters that have you on your edge of your seat I strongly recommend buying A Cold Cold Heart.
Meet the suave and debonair Charles Turner. A gentleman and solicitor of impeccable manners who has a fondness for pretty young ladies. He wines them, he dines them, he surrounds them with his wealth and musical taste and introduces them to his large detached residence in the country. There is just one problem with Mr C he is partial to erotic asphyxiation, enjoys the thrill of strangulation, and has a fixation with his dear departed mother her elegant party dresses and the smell of her lavender perfume. DI Gravel is having a bad day with a serial killer on the loose, the body count mounting, and his only daughter Emily about to step into the jaws of a crocodile when she accepts a job at a respectable local firm of solicitors Harrison and Turner.
I really enjoyed this book and unusual in the fact that the reader knows very quickly who the killer is. There are some well defined characters namely DI Gravel and his unhealthy life choices, his very able assistant Detective Sergeant Laura Kesey and a dangerous predator who will stop at nothing to feed his depraved sexual lust. Many thanks to netgalley for a gratis copy in exchange for an honest review and that is what I have written. I will certainly be reading more by John Nicholl as I enjoy his witty and fast flowing prose.
Absolutely amazing storyline that chills you to the bone . Twisting so much you won't know which way to turn . I can only hope there is more to come from this detective
In this thriller, we know who the killer is right from the beginning. The story is about how he selects and then reels in his next victim. The tension mounts as he gets closer to his goal.
His next victim is going to be Emily. Emily is the daughter of DI Gravel. DI Gravel has been investigating the murder of a string of young women and the detective has no clues to the identity of the killer.
The police are sure the same person raped and murdered all of the women, and it seems he dyed their hair and dressed them in old-fashioned clothes, before dumping them in the countryside.
DI Gravel is pleased when his daughter, Emily, tells him she has decided to move back to his area. She has been taken on at a respectable, local solicitors - not knowing that the killer is the main partner of the practice.
We watch as Grav’s daughter steps closer and closer to tragedy. The solicitor is charming and seductive and she almost falls for his charms, even though her instincts are telling her to keep her distance. They work together, they date, and he manipulates her into situations she can’t avoid.
There are some graphic, violent scenes. The author is an expert at crawling inside the mind of the killer and this was the part of the book that I found the strongest (in fact, it made the police procedural aspects fade into the distance.)
Three generous stars. I was excited to get this book but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to expectations. DI Gravel is excited to have his daughter Emily stay with him for a while and is happy that she has got a job at a prestigious law firm.
We are also introduced to a sadistic killer who has left a number of bodies of young women lying around, strangled to death and left in strangely old fashioned clothing. Gravel is on the case along with DS Laura Kesey. Then Gravel has a health scare and ends up in hospital so he doesn't realise straight away the danger that Emily is in. Then she goes missing. Is she to be the next victim of the sadistic killer? Laura must solve this case pretty much on her own.
The book was full of the elements we have come to expect from Nicholl but, to me, it seems he has devolved from hard hitting and gritty exposure of horrid domestic crimes into more farcical endeavours, more sadistic brutality for shock value. This villain was almost a caricature. He was ridiculously evil, if you can picture that, in an almost 'mwah ha ha' way. And the oily way he manipulated Emily was very predictable and crass. How many young women would fall for that? Unfortunately I think quite a few but it was all so obvious and predictable as to be almost comedic. No surprises in this book.
I absolutely loved this book - I thought it was simply brilliant!
I was hooked in straight from the off - what a brilliant plot!! I literally read it in one sitting, I really wasn't putting this one down! I thought it was absolutely excellent and the writing style, pace, characters - the whole lot - everything was superb!
Definitely a must read for 2018 - 5 stars from me, no hesitation - sometimes evil wears a suit... yes and in this, wears it really, really well - a cracking book!!
i hesitated a lot before rating the book, it was all along between 2 and 3 stars and at the end i decided it's 2.5 stars.
Last year i read White is the Coldest Color and i loved it, despite how much disturbing it was, so i was excited to read this book. But i did not really enjoy it. The story was naturally interesting, the serial killer as horrible and evil as one could expect from the creator of Dr Galbraith. But in this book, the serial killer was predictable, evil but predictable and i did not like this combination. I don't know if i'm making any sense, but there were no surprises in the story to make me look forward to the next chapter. Besides, i did not really like the other characters aside from DI Gravel who was rather interesting. And there was way too much swearing, in almost all the dialogs, for my liking.
This was rather a disappointing second experience with this author but maybe i would give another book a chance. This is my honest opinion in exchange of a copy via NetGalley.
Well written gripping book that didn't let me until I finished it in one sitting. I was so into the story that I felt like I was there with the victims, police, into killers twisted sadistic mind...
I'm not sure I can write a review that will do this book justice. How weird is it that overweight, misogynistic, cigar smoking, beer swilling DI Gravel holds such a warm place in my heart? The relief I felt when his daughter moved in with him; I've been very worried about Grav! The story grabs you from the first page and doesn't put you back down again until the last word. I read the whole thing in one sitting, (so no one got supper and the dogs didn't get walked....), but there was never a good place to take a break. I had to keep reading and knowing and reading and knowing! This is a frightening tale that will keep you thoroughly engrossed and completely absorbed. Take the phone off the hook and hang a 'Do Not Disturb' sign from your big toe. You can thank me later! 5, (+++) gold stars from me and a very, very most highest of all highly recommended!
John Nicholl can't keep a secret, he tells you from the beginning of the book who the killer is. He is happy for his readers to know why this madman does what he does too but most of all he doesn't just put you inside the mind of a killer, he puts the killer in your mind and believe me he stays there way after you close the book! D.I. Gravel is pushed and pulled in all directions in this story. His health is at it's all time low, his drinking and unhealthy eating is out of control and his emotions torn to shreds. It feels like he is on a suicide mission of self-destruction but with a serial killer playing cat and mouse with him he simply won't cut down on the work load. His daughter Emily has bagged a new job in a solicitor's office so at least he believes he has one thing he doesn't have to worry about!!!!!!!!!!! The killer is one smooth good-looking bloke but gift of the gab he doesn't have. Oh my does he make me cringe with his superior condescending way that he speaks to women. Now I aren't a violent person but honestly I wanted to slap him and then run like the wind! This killer really is one sick son of terrible mother! John Nicholl is highly skilled at intensifying the utter desperation of the victims while the self-gratification of the killer remains the only goal. His journey to continually re-enact his revenge on the person that would never allow him to have a normal relationship. Talk about making those goose bumps, bump! A super series but these books can also be read a stand alone reads.
This is a gripping read and I will definitely be reading more of John Nicholl’s books. The description of the book really intrigued me: “DI Gravel and his daughter Emily are oblivious to the terrible danger she is in when she accepts a job working for the solicitor Charles Turner.
Can DI Gravel and Emily come away from this case with both their lives intact?”
In this book we get to see the murders from both the killer’s perspective and also that of the Police. The murders are pretty gruesome and it soon becomes apparent that the killer puts on a front in his day to day life. DI Gravel is happy that his daughter has decided to move home and start a new job but soon her life is in danger and we first get to know about it from the killer’s evil thoughts. This book had me on the edge of my seat and I loved it! Thanks to Bloodhound books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
I’ve read all the books by this author and yet again he’s shocked me with his fantastic writing abilities.
DI Gravel is on the hunt for a serial killer. DS Laura Kesey is on the investigation with him. Young girls are being abducted, tortured and killed.
Gravel is delighted when his daughter Emily moves back in with him. The serial killer has set his sights on Emily as his next victim. Can Gravel and Kesey find the killer before it’s too late?
I sat down to read a few chapters of this book this afternoon and read it all. I could not put it down. I highly recommend you read this book. In fact go back and read his previous books as well because this is definitely one of my auto click authors.
I am off to purchase the first two in this series! I think that says it all. I found it a 'can't put down read' and although I like to read, I can get distracted by other books and tasks. This was not the case with A COLD COLD HEART, even the title grabbed me. Definite recommend from me.
