Nothing is more frustrating than getting screamed at, spilled on, and talked down to while doing a miserable job just to make ends meet. Less Than Three Press offers a collection of romantic shorts about the people who work the daily grind to keep the world turning, and toil away so others can have fun. Because everyone deserves a happy end, especially those who work so hard in the service of others.
Stories in this anthology
» Robillard's by R.D. Hero » No Complaints by Diana Sheridan » Fair Weather for Airstrikes by Mina MacLeod » Heartbeat by Mell Eight » Deliver Me by J.D. Walker » A Bird in the Hand by Ils Greyhart » There is Light by Blaine D. Arden » Stableboy by Leona Carver » Flip Flops & Tennis Shoes by Bettina Kaipling » Single Vampire Seeks Consort by Cassandra Pierce » My Sexual Superhero by Talya Andor
Obviously I have a thing for anthologies--you are right to judge me. But this one is good though! The common thread throughout these stories that the characters work in generally thankless and low-paying service jobs.
After a rough start, this collection becomes pretty good, and it contains two (2!) stories with trans characters. I suggest skipping the first two stories outright, most of the rest are okay or better.
Robillard's by R.D. Hero Unlikable characters. 2 stars
No Complaints by Diana Sheridan So, so, bad it was almost enjoyable. But: no. 1 star
Fair Weather for Airstrikes by Mina MacLeod Really good actually. A cute superhero story. 4 stars
Heartbeat by Mell Eight Vampire-werewolf fated mates. 3.5 stars
Deliver Me by J.D. Walker Poor grad student and rich grad student find love, and a pug named Mr. Wrinkles. 2 stars
A Bird in the Hand by Ils Greyheart UPS guy crushing on his cousin's friend. 4 stars
There is Light by Blaine D. Arden Melancholy tale of a lonely outcast with minimal magic in a world where all the techmology runs on magic power. 3.5 stars
Stableboy by Leona Carver A questing party stops at an inn, and the stableboy falls for an assassin. 3 stars
Flip Flops & Tennis Shoes by Bettina Kaipling YA/NA story of young love, as wholesome as a glass of milk. 4 stars
Single Vampire Seeks Consort by Cassandra Pierce Kind of muddled and unnecessarily complicated. 2.5 stars
My Sexual Superhero by Talya Andor Generation Y geeks. 3 stars
A mix of genres and stories, most of which I'd peg at a decent three stars and all worth reading, but there are few that really stand out for me, Flip Flops and Tennis Shoes being possibly one of my favourite romance stories ever (despite my initial reaction to the title as 'ugh, flip flops, gross!'). 5 stars for that one, easy. The characters are very easy to care for and I got very attached to the protagonist. I also really liked There is Light, a glimpse into a really cool and unique, magical world.
This is not so much a review as my random comments on each of the stories.
» Robillard's by R.D. Hero: 2.5 stars Contemporary I just never really got the connection between the two MCs.
» No Complaints by Diana Sheridan: 3.5 stars Contemporary I really liked the beginning of the story, but it started to fall flat towards the end. I think it would have been better as a longer story so the conflict could have been developed a bit more.
» Fair Weather for Airstrikes by Mina MacLeod: 4.5 stars Superhero This was one of my favorites. The whole story was quirky and humorous. I'm really hoping for more one day.
» Heartbeat by Mell Eight: 4 stars Paranormal The story was really too short for everything that went into it. I'm really hoping it will just be one in a series, because I think there is great potential and I would love to see the MCs later down the road.
» Deliver Me by J.D. Walker: 4 stars Contemporary It was a good solid story. I liked the characters well enough.
» A Bird in the Hand by Ils Greyhart: 4 stars Contemporary Ah, the joys of a well-meaning/meddling friend. A series of misunderstandings, but in a realistic way. Once the MCs started actually talking, it was good.
» There is Light by Blaine D. Arden: 5 stars Fantasy I loved this story. The worldbuilding could have used a bit more depth, but given the length of the story it was good. I'm hoping for more in this world (though I would really love for more with the same MCs).
» Stableboy by Leona Carver: 2.5 stars Fantasy, This one started out okay, but it didn't really work for me. I think with more length, this could have been developed better.
» Flip Flops & Tennis Shoes by Bettina Kaipling: 4.5 stars Contemporary, I can't put a finger on why I liked this one as much as I did, but it was one of my favorites. I'll be looking for more from this author.
» Single Vampire Seeks Consort by Cassandra Pierce: 3 stars Paranormal I think this had lots of potential, but it just didn't really work for me.
» My Sexual Superhero by Talya Andor: 3.5 stars Contemporary I liked the geek references in this one, otherwise it was just okay.
Probably more like 2.5 stars, but I'm in a generous mood.
Robillard's by R.D. Hero: 3/5 It wasn't bad, but Diego was kind of whiny and the the other guy (Josh? Jonah?) behaved in a way that didn't really make sense. I liked the antagonism, but it didn't go anywhere, and the sex was random.
No Complaints by Diana Sheridan: 0/5 This was just atrocious. I bailed out two pages in, unable to stand it longer.
Fair Weather for Airstrikes by Mina MacLeod: 3.5/5 It was cute, though I never really got into the world.
Heartbeat by Mell Eight: n/a I'm not really into urban fantasy and skipped this one, so.
Deliver Me by J.D. Walker: 1.5/5 Started out okay, but degenerated pretty quickly, and I ended up skimming most of it. The sex (what I happened to read of it) was excruciating, though. "Digging for gold," yikes.
A Bird in the Hand by Ils Greyheart: 3/5 Objectively, there wasn't really anything wrong with it, but it got so boring.
There is Light by Blaine D. Arden: n/a Skimmed it.
Stableboy by Leona Carver: 3/5 It was all right, but felt distant somehow.
Flip Flops & Tennis Shoes by Bettina Kaipling: 4/5 Cute until the rushed ending, but eh.
Single Vampire Seeks Consort by Cassandra Pierce: n/a Again, urban fantasy... I couldn't really get into it.
My Sexual Superhero by Talya Andor: 2/5 I just didn't like this one very much.
