Complexity and the Economy

Economics is changing. In the last few years it has generated a number of new approaches. One of the most promising - complexity economics - was pioneered in the 1980s and 1990s by a small team at the Santa Fe Institute. Economist and complexity theorist W. Brian Arthur led that team, and in this book he collects many of his articles on this new approach. The traditional framework sees behavior in the economy as in an equilibrium steady state. People in the economy face well-defined problems and use perfect deductive reasoning to base their actions on. The complexity framework, by contrast, sees the economy as always in process, always changing. People try to make sense of the situations they face using whatever reasoning they have at hand, and together create outcomes they must individually react to anew. The resulting economy is not a well-ordered machine, but a complex evolving system that is imperfect, perpetually constructing itself anew, and brimming with vitality.

The new vision complements and widens the standard one, and it helps answer many Why does the stock market show moods and a psychology? Why do high-tech markets tend to lock in to the dominance of one or two very large players? How do economies form, and how do they continually alter in structure over time?

The papers collected here were among the first to use evolutionary computation, agent-based modeling, and cognitive psychology. They cover topics as disparate as how markets form out of beliefs; how technology evolves over the long span of time; why systems and bureaucracies get more complicated as they evolve; and how financial crises can be foreseen and prevented in the future.

William Brian Arthur is an economist credited with developing the modern approach to increasing returns. He has lived and worked in Northern California for many years. He is an authority on economics in relation to complexity theory, technology and financial markets.

I read this book and The Nature of Technology about the same time. This review restates the one I gave that book. I’ve been on a campaign for the past year and a half to try to understand what’s going on in our world in terms of the collision of technology, the economic, jobs and the workplace. In that context, I recently discovered W. Brian Arthur and his work in complex systems theory. He is my latest hero in terms of making sense of the world. Complexity theory just work for me -- it’s probably as close to a theory of everything as anything I’ve come across. It’s how the economy works, how the brain, the human body, culture, creativity… how all these things work. Mr. Arthur has been at this for a long time, and he’s gained such a level of proficiency that he makes it look easy.

Checks the boxes, but it's ironic that one can seriously start off by claiming complexity and ambiguity, and then spend the rest of the book arguing on how this can yet be bounded.

کتاب به صورت مجموعه مقالاتی از آقای برایان آرتور دانشمند در حوزه ی پیچیدگی و اقتصاد است، کتابی که سعی دارد کاستی های نگاه اقتصاد نوکلاسیکی که در واقع برخاسته از فیزیک قرن نوزدهم است را کنار بگذارد و با ایجاد نگاهی جدید مبتنی بر نظریه پیچیدگی و شبیه سیستم های بیولوژیک، راه کار هایی برای مشکلاتی همیشگی که اقتصاد نوکلاسیک به آنها پاسخ نمی دهد را ارائه دهد. نگاهی که می تواند ورای معادلات کمی برای پیش بینی ها باشد و در واقع واقع گرایانه به آنچه واقعا در روند اقتصاد رخ می دهد را نشان دهد.

کتاب کلیاتی راجع به نظریه پیچیدگی و تکامل سازمان های پیچیده با ۳ مکانیسم توضیح میدهد، نگاهی به تفاوت های فردی در قالب روان شناسی شناختی و تاثیر این حیطه بر اقتصاد آینده دارد، از لزوم به کار گیری تجربه در کنار تئوری برای پیشبرد اقتصاد می گوید همانند آنچه در پزشکی دیده می شود.‌ از لزوم دانش گسترده ناشی از تاریخ اقتصاد و روند ها در گذشته در کنار معادلات ریاضی برای مدل رفتار انسانها، از موضوعی به نام فناوری و سرشت تکامل فناوری ها که در واقع ارتور بیان می کند استخوان بندی و شاکله اقتصاد ،فناوری های سیستم هستند، فناوری هایی که اقتصاد را می سازند و اقتصادی که با دینامیک و پویاییش بستری برای ظهور و تکامل بیشتر فناوری ها فراهم میکند.
در فصلی بسیار جذاب نیز در کتاب از دور زدن و بازی دادن سیستم ها در هر سطحی می گوید، راه هایی برای سودجویی و باگ در هر سیستمی که افراد با استفاده از ان از سیستم به نفع خود استفاده می کنند، نویسنده به خوبی مکانیسم هایی برای این نوع دور زدن سیستم ها ارائه می کند و پیشنهادهایی برای پیش بینی و عیب یابی باگ های سیستم های اقتصادی -سیاسی ارائه میدهد.
در صفحه ۲۱۲ از کتاب ترجمه نشر نی در این فصل می خوانیم :"در زندگی اقتصادی و اجتماعی یک نظریه کلی جاری است و آن این است که در هر نظامی، مردم بالاخره راهی راهی برای سودجویی از آن پیدا می کنند، یه به گفتاری کوتاه تر هر نظامی بازی می خورد. در این جا منظورم بدگمانی نیست بلکه دارم از یک قاعده کلی سخن می گویم و آن اینست که در هر نظام حکومتی معینی، هر نظام حقوقی خاصی، هر سازمان نظارتی، هر ساختار بنگاهی، هر سامانه انتخاباتی، هر مجموعه مقرارتی، هر مجموعه قواعد سازمانی و هر مجموعه پیمان بین المللی، مردم بلدند راه غیر منتظره ای برلی بهره برداری به سود خودشان پیدا کنند (و می کنند) ..."
در چندین فصل نیز نویسنده با کمک برنامه نویسی و ساختن مدل های کامپیوتری دینامیک بازارها را نشان میدهد و مدل هایی که می توانند بازارهایی را شبیه سازی کنند. بازارهایی متشکل از افرادی با تفکرات مختلف و استقرا نه افرادی شبیه به هم با عقلانیت کامل.

کتاب به صورت ساختار یافته و منظم ارایه شده که تفکری نظام مند را در قالب این نوع نگاه به اقتصاد ارائه می کند. با اطلاعاتی ابتدایی در باره نظریه پیچیدگی و دانش مختصری از کلیات اقتصاد می تواند برای شروع این نگاه جدید به اقتصاد شروع خوبی باشد.

"اقتصاد مجموعه ای از رفتارهایی که انگیزه ای برای تغییر ندارند و به صورت جمعی به سمت وضعیت بهینه می گرایند، نیست، اقتصاد شبکه ای از انگیزه هاست که همواره به رفتارهای بعدی دامن می زنند، راهبردهای جدید را به کار می گیرند، به صورت جمعی وضعیت های معقول پدید می آورند و پیوسته موجب تغییر نظام افتصادی می شوند"

I'm a huge fan of W. Brian Arthur and this is his most accessible work to date. If you're into complexity economics and system dynamics — and let's face it, who isn't — you'll be as pleased as punch with this slim volume.

تصورم از کتاب این بود که به مبانی پیچیدگی بپردازه و بعد سراغ اقتصاد بره. اما کتاب متشکل از چند مقاله است که آرتور قبلا منتشر کرده. به نظرم اگر کسی قبلا جیزی از اقتصاد و چیزی از پیچیدگی ندونه، از کتاب چیز خاصی متوجه نمیشه.
کتاب سنگینی بود نسبت به سایر کتاب‌های عمومی علمی که قبلا خوانده بودم.

Just great! Complexity applied to economy. But it's more than that - it's about technology as a base for economy, it's about different principles of evolution common for life and economy, it's about dynamic, always changing and non-equilibrium economy, it's about economy as cognition. A very profound read!

Accessible and somewhat repetitive. Not revolutionary as Arthur's first book but still valuable - in part for its condemnation of post-2008 economics.

A few excerpts:

Like many economists I admire the beauty of the neoclassical economy; but for me the construct is too pure, too brittle - too bled of reality. It lives in a Platonic world of order, stasis, knowableness, and perfection. Absent from it is the ambiguous, the messy, the real.

and

The market in this view is psychological, organic, and imperfectly efficient. From the academic viewpoint, traders - embarrassingly the very agents assumed rational by the theory - are irrational and superstitious.

Repetitious Arthur, alas, is still scandalously original thinking.
