30 Days to a New Relationship with Alcohol

Rate this book
Whether you’d like to give up alcohol or just drink less—or you’re just thinking about drinking less—this guide is for you.

Each day for 30 days, New York Times best-selling author and recovery expert Holly Whitaker brings you a 5- to 10-minute reflection aimed at helping you change your relationship with alcohol, drawing on her personal experience and grounded in the latest research.

This is not necessarily a sobriety program. You don't have to quit drinking to participate. Instead, we’ll work with the thought patterns that are often tied to the reasons we drink, drink too much, and keep drinking when we don’t want to.

30 Days to a New Relationship with Alcohol is crafted to help you gently but powerfully change your brain and your life. All you have to do is listen.

This guide is part of the 30-Day Guides to Improve Your Life series. Follow the series to get notified of titles forthcoming this year on setting better boundaries, rediscovering your creativity, and thriving with ADHD.

I think the reading/vocal narration by the author was passionate and a true reflection of the authenticity of her words. I was not looking for complete sobriety so much as a reset and nice slow down, which I achieved. I meditated, sketched and journaled on her daily mantras. A lot of them were already lessons I’ve worked on healing and learning from, so it was a bit repetitive for me. However, I do think this could be very effective for someone completely new to these concepts. I also think this is a very subjective body of work and will translate uniquely based on the reader/listener. I applaud Holly for putting her work out there, and I am hopeful it does help people.

Good for what it was! I didn’t know that it was a once a day book so I just went through it at a normal book pace but the messages were good. It’s not necessarily only for drinking but for anything you may be struggling with in life , it gives different affirmations but it also gives real life stories and real life examples, which to me, makes it much more digestible. It’s an easy and quick read.

Nothing particularly life-changing but when you do a little bit each day, it’s kind of nice. Trying to get through it all at once would have been tough (and is not the point of the book). Interesting to do during Dry January. I set a few id my favorite affirmations as daily alarms on my phone throughout the day and it’s really nice to be reminded of them continuously.

Just a good reminder that my relationship with alcohol can be whatever I want it to be and it’s good to evaluate it often. I enjoyed some of the commentary, didn’t really care for some of it, and got bored with some of it. But overall it kept me accountable to think about my relationship with alcohol during this very stressful season of life.

This 30-day guide was so helpful for my first month without alcohol! I listened to the affirmations every morning with breakfast and it set me up nicely with a positive mindset for the day. Not even directly relevant to drinking but good for building confidence in short snippets

There were some good mantras. I would say while it's a good listen with some points that I will inherit into my life, there were some that didn't resonate with me.
It's a good routine to listen to a mantra a day for a month and get into a habit of a single daily focus.

Very interesting recovery experience. You need to understand that the process is long. With ups and downs.

I loved this so much I’m starting it all over again. I decided this year to stop drinking alcohol and saw this. The daily affirmations are great, I put them in my phone and set my alarm to remind me thought the day and use them as journalling points on my journey to sobriety. Highly recommend.

I decided to listen to this because it was free on audible and because I was curious to hear the author's take because of my own personal experience working and living with people who are in the thick of substance abuse/dependence.

I think it had a lot of great content, most of which was general self-improvement and not specifically related to alcohol. The message was different from what I typically associate with recovery via the 12-steps (this book focuses on giving yourself grace and embracing disappointing people) and I actually really liked her take.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of affirmations. They've always seemed kind of limiting/reductive and I feel like I get more out of contemplation. Personal preference aside, 75% of the affirmations in this book felt really important.
