The author was seconded to the regiment during World War II and was a former commander in the post war years. Because the regiment served as a source for officers and NCOs during World War II and di not operate as an organic unit, the bulk of this book concentrates on the regiment's service during the Kenyan Emergency (Mau Mau uprising). It is stylistically well written, but the overall tone lends one to think that this was primarily intended for those who served in the regiment. There are many personal anecdotes which are structured in a way that gives me the impression that I'm definitely on th outside looking in. All in all a solid history of the period in Kenya, 1950-1963. A bonus is that one of the appendices lists all of the British units that served in Kenya during the Emergency. This is information that is very difficult to find in one place.
