When I saw this book, I was immediately intrigued. Especially since I work in a public library. This book discusses 150 libraries, often highlighting the beautiful architecture and the origins of the library in question. The book covers various types of libraries: public, affiliated with a university or college, those dedicated to a specific subject, national libraries, and even those incorporated into modern cultural institutions. If you think the types are diverse, wait until you discover which buildings some libraries are housed in. From churches and former post offices to dilapidated factories and palaces. During this walk past beautiful buildings, you'll occasionally hear the same architects mentioned. The walk is divided into different continents, with Europe alone covering 50 locations. This book is certainly not for those with wanderlust. With the accompanying photos, you'll almost book a world trip. This is a wonderful book for library staff and lovers of books and buildings. Other readers might not find it so successful. Still, it is worth taking a look at these special libraries, even if it is in a printed version.

Toen ik dit boek voorbij zag komen, was ik meteen benieuwd. Zeker aangezien ik in een openbare bib werk. In dit boek worden er 150 bibliotheken besproken. Vaak wordt er gesproken over de prachtige bouwkunst en het onstaan van de bibliotheek in kwestie. De verschillende types bibliotheken komen in dit boek voor: openbare, verbonden aan een hogeschool of universiteit, over een specifiek onderwerp, nationale en zelfs degenen die zijn opgenomen in moderne cultuurhuizen. Als je denkt dat de types al verschillend zijn, wacht maar tot je ontdekt in welke gebouwen sommige bibliotheken zitten. Van kerken en voormalige postkantoren tot vervallen fabrieken en paleizen. Tijdens deze wandeling langs mooie gebouwen hoor je soms dezelfde namen van architecten vallen. De wandeling is opgedeeld in verschillende werelddelen, waarvan enkel Europa al 50 plaatsen inneemt. Dit boek doet in ieder geval geen deugd voor mensen met wanderlust. Met de bijhorende foto's erbij ga je bijna een wereldreis boeken. Dit is een heerlijk boek voor bibliotheekmedewerkers, en liefhebbers van boeken en gebouwen. Andere lezers gaan dit misschien niet zo geslaagd vinden. Toch is het de moeite waard om eens een kijkje te nemen bij deze speciale bibliotheken, al is het in een geprinte versie.

Thanks to my hubby for giving me this book! I loved this one, gorgeous libraries, including one I may visit soon as I was looking for a substitute to one of my libraries~

Heb jij wel eens een bibliotheek in een kerk gezien? Of een bibliotheek in een oud badhuis? Of een bibliotheek waar je per kabelbaan komt? Of wil je weten wat de oudste constant opererende bibliotheek ter wereld is? In 150 Libraries you need to visit before you die staan de allerbijzonderste, mooiste, gekste bibliotheken die je je maar kan voorstellen.
Bibliotheken zijn een van de mooiste plekken ter wereld. Waar je ook bent, je bent er altijd welkom om te studeren, rondkijken, of boeken te lenen. Zelf ben ik wel eens in Mexico een bibliotheek in gewandeld - natuurlijk mocht ik even komen kijken - en de Nationale Bibliotheek van Frankrijk in Parijs mocht ik nátuurlijk even kijken, als ik maar stil deed.
In 150 Libraries you need to visit before you die kan je volop inspiratie vinden van bijzondere bibliotheken. Het boek is per werelddeel opgedeeld, en bij alle bibliotheken zie je 1 of meerdere afbeeldingen van de bibliotheek. Sommige bibliotheken hebben een tof pand, zoals DePetrus bibliotheek in Vught: deze zit in een kerk! Anderen hebben een hele bijzondere collectie, of bestaan al duizenden jaren, of zijn extra bekend om hun samenwerking met de lokale bewoners. Al deze bibliotheken zijn bijzonder, en dat maakt dit een heerlijk boek om in te bladeren.
Je kan op zoek gaan naar Nederlandse bibliotheken (extra leuk! Ik wil meteen op roadtrip om ze te bezoeken). Of een bibliotheek in de buurt van je vakantiebestemming. Of gewoon wegdromen bij de plaatjes en verhalen. Het is een prachtige verzameling en ik wil alle 150 bibliotheken wel bezoeken!

If you're a fan of books, you should probably read this one too, and see if there's something to your liking...
I can proudly and gladly say that I have already visited some of these places and that a couple more are on my to-visit list! And one is even only a short walk away from where I live!
The most interesting part, I have to admit, is Europe. It contains 50 libraries, so a third, and it has the most varied offer, from baroque libraries to state-of-the-art ones. Most other continents aren't gifted with that diversity, unfortunately. Although I have to admit it was rather funny to see how some architects (or architectural firms) are mentioned time and again throughout the book.
The texts are always short, no more than the absolutely necessities are given, and most of the time the pictures are nice and give a good idea of what you can expect from the libraries themselves, thinking of the ones I have visited myself. There's also a good balance between the big and famous ones - obviously places like the Library of Congress and the British Library are present - and smaller, lesser-known libraries, such as - for us Flemish and Dutch people - Aalst and Vught.
The final part, Africa and the Middle East, was less interesting to me because it was much less about the buildings and the architecture (the reason I took this book from... the library) and more about the ideas behind them, which I find less enticing. But to each his own - there's definitely something in here for every reader!

Zoveel plekken waar ik nooit ga geraken! Maar wat een schat aan reisinspiratie. Gestart in New York en klaar voor de rest van de wereldse parels. Ook voor architectuur lovers.
