Bestselling author Donna Alam burns up the page with this sizzling opposites-attract romance, where mistaken identity and role-play bring two strangers together for a night they’ll never forget.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. And there’s nothing more desperate than turning up to my ex’s wedding alone.
My cheating ex.
My current boss.
The reason I hired a professional to be my plus-one.
When I spot Mr. Temptation-in-a-Tux at the hotel, I assume I’ve found my man. Charming, attentive, and protective, he’s the perfect boyfriend experience. The way he looks at me has even me fooled.
After the most passionate night of my life, I slip away before he wakes. But there’s a price to pay for all that pleasure…
Months later, our eyes lock across a boardroom table. The shock is real. Because Matt is no escort—he’s a powerful billionaire investor. And he’s determined not to let me get away this time.
But there are things about me he doesn’t know. Secrets I can’t share.
I’m no damsel in distress, and Matt’s no white knight.

Wow! I had no clue what to expect going into to this as I know it's the third book in the series, but I haven't read the others. This was divine! Matt has the "touch her and ☠️" vibes but also such a loving/caring king!! Like yes, please, give me a Matt any day!! 🥵 I love the FMC. She was truly real. It was interesting to see her fierce, girl boss vibe and how her character development throughout the book. I'm obsessed with them together and LOVED this! There were some tense moments, a bit of suspense, and a teary-eyed moment.... though I can't say more as it'd spoil things, but immediately go get this one!
I received this ARC from NetGalley and Montlake to read/review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.
I was enjoying the book until my absolute most hated trope appeared. Accidental pregnancy. I wasted my time getting to the 50% of the audiobook. I’m sorry but this is really not for me. I wish there was a trigger warning for this trope.
That’s a dnf for me from here on. The book was fine. The audio was good! Narrators were fantastic. But the meet cute dragged for over 30% and the story doesn’t actually start till 50% in.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I actually got to ~26% (not even the typical 30% that I usually make myself get to before adding to my DNF pile) and past the sample. I didn't really like the h that much, I thought it was moving way too slow, and I was at their steamy scene and I felt like it was just too much. Don't get me wrong -- not too much smut or anything, but just too much inner dialogue and actual dialogue. I had read 100 pages and I feel like hardly anything happened! We were still on the same night they met. Maybe other readers would like this, but it just wasn't working for me.
I was immediately hooked by the premise of No Knight: Ryan hires an escort for her ex's wedding but accidentally ends up with Matt, a protective, gorgeous billionaire investor. The initial confusion and the explosive chemistry at the wedding were fantastic—sizzling, witty, and everything I want in a steamy romance.
Unfortunately, for me, the execution didn't hold up. The start was slow, dragging on with extended dialogue for the first 30%, which killed the pace right away. Then, when Ryan and Matt finally reunite months later, Ryan suddenly transforms into a "Debbie Downer" with frustratingly low self-esteem. It was a jarring change that made me disconnect from her journey.
I loved Matt; his dedication to Ryan was clear, and the writing itself was mostly smooth. But the characters felt inconsistent, and their love story, despite the intense spice, just didn't emotionally land for me. It had all the elements of a five-star read—mistaken identity, high stakes, billionaire hero—but it ultimately fell apart in the execution. This one is strictly for readers who prioritize heat over character consistency.
This book was a fun and easy read; I'd give this book 3.5 stars. I was expecting the worst from Ryan's backstory, and it didn't end up being THAT bad. Ryan and Matt's first encounter of mistaken identity was pretty cute, it just felt so real with how desperate Ryan was. Matt's niece was probably my favorite character, she was hilarious. The story line was good, and the banter was fun. Just going to add, Matt had so much money at his disposal, if he wanted to find Ryan, he would have.
Format: audiobook narrated by Ariela Crow and Will M. Watt
Thank you NetGalley, Donna Alam, and Brilliance Publishing for the ALC!
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC. I'm so in love with this author's writing. It's uplifting and full of hilarious banter whilst touching on trauma from childhood. Her characters are always such fun, well-rounded, and a joy to read. There's something special about a Donna Alam book that takes you into the character's world. if you love a swoony romance, knightly mmc, and a fiercely independent face, you've got it here. I'm so excited to read the next book Kerry Kennedy Author
I was enjoying this book a fair bit early on for a while until it hit me... there is a LOT of dialog. Like, the first 25% of it is dialog. Considering what's going on and where they are, it does make sense, but when I noticed this, I realized I was beginning to get bored with how much talking they were doing when they were simply sitting at a table. The entire book has about 7 locations: 1) a bar, 2) a hotel / wedding reception, 3) a hotel room, 4) a work place, 5) a little restaurant, 6) another work place, 7) Matt's house.
The beginning of the book is funny. I chuckled multiple times. It just eventually got to be too much dialog, with nothing happening (and frankly nothing important being said or thought) that I began skimming parts.
It's a sweet enough story, but it kind of fell a bit short for me. I liked Matt a lot. He was a great character. Again, funny, too. Protective, a little vengeful (though I wish we had more details on that front)... but unfortunately, I don't think I'll be reading the book again or even bother looking into the first two before this one.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for this ARC!
I truly enjoyed this book — it features one of my favorite tropes: accidental pregnancy. The author did a wonderful job weaving that into a heartfelt, emotional story.
Matt was such a standout character. I adored how he loved Ryan — no love bombing, just consistent actions that showed his devotion and care. He supported her, fought for her love, and helped her grow in ways that felt realistic and touching.
I especially appreciated the character growth, particularly Ryan’s journey. The author handled sensitive topics like child abuse, infidelity, and misogyny with care, adding emotional weight without overwhelming the romance.
It’s a solid 4-star read for me, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys heartfelt, trope-driven romance with substance.
This book was boring ,repetitive, and Unrealistic. Totally impractical . If I wasn't the sort of person that felt compelled to finish what I started I wouldn't have finished this bunch of bull. The male main character Matt was interesting. He went from thinking that the main female character Ryan was crazy, to feeling sorry for her to sex dazzled. Matt was enough to keep me reading but the female main character,Ryan, just kept up her self destructive monologue throughout the book which got boring and old fast. She needed serious therapy to get past her abusive childhood. People who have that parents that are addicted to substances need counseling and coping skills before they become parents, and every parent could use some counseling while parenting so they have balanced lives. The author really does a disservice to her readers by not addressing her character's issues and writing counseling of some sort into the story and sending her abusive alcoholic Mom money doesn't waste to murder. It shows she, Ryan, was still trying to connect with her mom and get parental approval. Even if Ryan knew that her mom would probably use the money to feed her addictions and poor choices Ryan didn't force her to buy drugs or booze instead of food. The author relies on the fairy tale that the right person can "fix" you. You can not fix someone else's trauma. You can give people tools and support but you can't and you shouldn't be expected to "fix" someone else. Ryan's near death experience "fixes" all her Mommy and insecurity issues. Please don't insult readers Ms. Slam just so you can give them a HEA. Round out the characters so a HEA ending is at least feasible.
I didn't enjoy this story. When all you read is someone who keeps denying her own feelings, denying his feelings, and getting all angsty about everything ... for hundreds of pages.... Not reading anymore by this author
I have read a few books by this author and loved each of them. One of the books was another in this series.
I knew it would be a good story with heat, love and angst. This was probably my favourite of hers. Matt was such an amazing and patient book boyfriend and half Spanish/half Irish is the dream!
Ryan did have some baggage but what she did to her mum wasn’t really bad at all. It’s not her fault.
I wish we had a little bit more in the epilogue though.
Also, this has an accidental pregnancy trope for those who hate that.
First time reading this author, I will not be reading another. Does she know how to write smoothly and well? Yes! Did I sometimes laugh? Yes! Did I love the MMC? Yes! However, she drags things out unbelievably. Ex: if the MMC asked a question there are 7-8 pages of backstory and explanations. By the time the question comes up again to be answered the reader can’t even remember what the question was. It’s just too much information. It made what could have been a good book boring. After about 50% I started skipping some pages just to get through it. Very frustrating for me.
I’ll admit, the beginning had me completely hooked. From the very first page, I was transfixed, and I ended up devouring the first half of the book in one sitting. The one-night stand setup was electric—the smut was some of the best I’ve ever read, full of tension, heat, and impact. It was playful and hilarious at times, yet still deeply captivating. Even though the premise itself isn’t entirely new, Allen’s writing style and attention to detail made it feel fresh and unforgettable.
Then came a trope I usually hate: the accidental pregnancy. Normally, this is an instant dealbreaker for me, but to my surprise, it actually worked fairly well here. It didn’t feel as heavy-handed as it often does, though I can’t say it was my favorite part.
Now, let’s talk about Matt. He’s literally the whole package! Kind, patient, tall, rich, family-oriented, empathetic, understanding—you name it, he’s got it. Honestly, he’s so flawless that it almost breaks the illusion, because no man like him exists outside of fiction. But I adored him all the same, and his dynamic with the FMC had so much potential. And omg his nickname “teacup” for her was so adorable and unique! The FMC herself was well-rounded, flawed in a believable way, and shaped by trauma, but not defined by it. Her growth and development were strong points in the story.
That said, there were a few aspects that drove me crazy. The biggest offender: the constant edging. After such a fantastic opening, I found myself frustrated when later intimate moments were brushed aside or cut off with a “…” as if to say, we’ll just skip this part. I didn’t want them skipped, I wanted more of what made the beginning so addicting.
And then there’s the miscommunication. I understand where Matt was coming from, but the FMC’s silence and refusal to open up was maddening. Time kept passing with nothing changing, months and months of distance—and then suddenly, they’re deeply in love. From Matt’s side, it made sense, but from hers, it felt unearned and rushed. The angst toward the end was gripping, though, and I was genuinely nervous about whether things would work out. Thankfully, the resolution was sweet, and the epilogue was undeniably adorable.
One last letdown for me was the big “trauma reveal.” The story hinted at something devastating and dark, but when it was finally revealed, it felt oddly anticlimactic. I expected something heavier, especially since I usually read darker romances where the stakes are higher. Instead, it felt a little too basic compared to the build-up.
No Knight by Donna Alam was such a fun read, and overall, I really enjoyed it. The first few chapters hooked me right away. I was pulled into the story and couldn’t wait to see how Matt and Ryan’s relationship would unfold.
Matt completely stole my heart. He was so sweet, persistent, and adorable in the way he kept trying to win Ryan over. I loved how dedicated he was to showing her his feelings and proving that he was worth the risk. Honestly, he’s the kind of book boyfriend you root for the whole way through.
The reason I didn’t give it 5 stars comes down to Ryan’s side of the story. Her reasons for holding back really frustrated me. I’m a big believer that communication is key, and it felt like so many of her struggles could have been resolved if she’d just let herself open up, even just as a friend, to see that she didn’t need to keep secrets or push Matt away. Because of that, I didn’t fully feel her walls breaking down or her falling for him. The glimpses we did get were mostly tied to jealousy, which wasn’t enough for me to really believe in her side of the romance.
I also thought the ending wrapped up too quickly. The buildup of Matt’s love was beautifully done, but I wanted to see more of Ryan’s growth and more balance between them.
Still, I really enjoyed the story. It had such a strong start, and Matt’s charm and persistence carried the book for me. While the middle and end didn’t pull me in quite as much as those opening chapters, I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a sweet, determined hero who won’t give up on love.
It's a case of mistaken identity when Ryan thinks the hot guy in a tux is her hired escort for the night. Her cheating ex and current boss is getting married and she's required to attend, and what's a girl to do to save her pride but hire a date? She didn't expect to hit it off so well with him though, enough to not want the night to end. Mattias Romero was only in that bar to unwind after his own ex's wedding, he certainly didn't plan to attend another. After a stray comment of his was misunderstood and she thought he was an escort, he went along with it because she was so desperate not to go alone. He never planned on letting it go any further without telling her the truth... but by morning she was gone and he lost his chance. He's the one desperate now to find her, but will she ever forgive him? I love the flirting and banter between these two, the spice and slow burn of their relationship, and the comfortable easy way he treated her at home. Matt's large family and their dynamic was awesome and hilarious, and his friend group and their wives were great too. This is the first book I've read in the series and can be read a a standalone but the first two sound like they could be great too. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I only read the blurb before starting this one, and I’m so glad I did. It was such a sweet romance with low angst. Honestly, exactly what I needed after so many dark romances💕
Matt and Ryan’s story was adorable, and I loved the way they met (both times, lol). It just made their connection feel that much more special.
Also, shoutout to the narrators because they did such a good job. I actually think the audiobook made the whole experience even better.
And even though this is book three in the series, it totally works as a standalone—so don’t stress if you haven’t read the others yet.
Thank you so much to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this as an arc.
Unfortunately I had to DNF around the 30% mark. The premise sounded fun and something right up my alley, but once I started reading I realized the writing style wasn't my jam. It made it difficult to get into the story, and the pacing was too slow to be able to grasp my attention.
I can't give a proper opinion on the characters, because I feel like I didn't read enough to get to know them properly, but I was mostly enjoying them.
Might be my favorite of the series. Mistaken identity, literally squealed, she mistook him for a male escort at a bar, who keeps a retainer because he doesn’t look cheap and has a black card. Matt or Matias, is Irish/Spanish helping Ryan out as her date for her ex boyfriend now boss’ wedding. Matt having also attended his ex’s wedding earlier goes along reluctantly, but when the finance bros, Ryan’s co-workers, arrive at the table he brings all the “touch her and die” vibes. Loved meeting Matt’s siblings, now I need a book from each of his siblings, they sound fun. Ryan was a truly strong FMC who deals with entitled men and childhood trauma.
Thank you to Montlake & NetGalley for an ARC of this book, in exchange for my honest opinion.
My Initial Thoughts I was so excited to read the last book of My Kind Of Hero series, the last of the Maven Inc men taken, but by who. At the start there is a lot of speech that I pushed through and I really couldn’t understand Matt’s thinking, but Ryan had me LOL with her bossiness in the pub and demanding Matt helps her. But also who goes to an ex’s wedding? These two apparently. Also can we take a moment to appreciate the covers for this series! Plot I’m not sure what I thought of this plot, a lot of it made no sense and some just poofed outta nowhere. But the tension between the characters was obvious and it was funny watching Ryan do everything to a schedule and Matt just going along with it. I think the biggest pull of the plot was Ryan’s character development. Characters Of course we have the Maven crew and their wives make an appearance, which I have loved how interconnected the whole series has been. Ryan is a complex character and I liked seeing her slowly and I mean slowly lower her guard. Matt was his normal self but I must say he is a bit of a pushover, right ? Recommend If you like billionaire romances then this series needs you to pick it up. Favourite Quote “It’s possession, Ryan. I want you. Want to keep you. And I will, because the truth of it is, I already own a part of you. Just as you own a part of me.” Favourite Chapter/s My favourite chapters were 2, 22 and 25. Summed up in one sentence A romance were the walls are high and the guard needs to drop. Overall Wrap up I thought this was okay, it was not my favourite in the series though. Finishing up this series, and this one was just okay for me. I liked the MMC, but overall it’s not a story I’d ever really reach for again. It was fine, I finished it, but I feel like it was portrayed as one thing and didn’t quite deliver on that. Overall… it was okay.
Spoilers ahead — sorry not sorry. I found this book through an IG ad that sold it as a fun romcom: a woman mistakes a hot guy at a bar for the escort she hired to take to her ex’s wedding, and instead of correcting her, he plays along. Cute, right? And it is, at first. Ryan and Matt hit it off and end up spending a perfect night together, but she ghosts him the next morning, assuming she was just a job to him. Weeks later, Matt, still hung up on her, spots Ryan while out with his niece, but she vanishes again. They finally reconnect at a work meeting, and from there, things should take off, but here’s where the book lost me. Matt is the total package: sweet, emotionally available, half-Scottish/half-Spanish with a hot accent, and of course filthy rich. But Ryan spends the entire book pushing him away. Why? Well first, it was because he lied to her about being an escort. Oh get off your high horse lady, you just paid $2000 to some stranger for one night. All he did was not tell you he was a billionaire businessman. Calm down. And second, guilt over her mothers death. Throughout the whole book, she kept thinking “if he knew what I was capable of, he’d never love me”. I was expecting something dark, come to find out all she did was feed her alcoholic mother’s habit by giving her money. Whoop-de-doo! Then there’s the surprise pregnancy trope, which I can’t stand and really wish I had known about going in. But honestly, I could’ve dealt with the pregnancy, if Ryan wasn’t so determined to ruin a good thing. Because if a guy like Matt actually existed, no sane woman would ever let him go. I spent most of the book absolutely furious with Ryan. The only reason this book is rated a 3.5 is because a) I love Matt’s character and b) because the male narrators voice is chefs kiss.
No Knight by Donna Alam completely stole my heart! The chemistry between Matias and Ryan is magnetic, but what really made me fall in love with this story was the witty banter. Their back-and-forth is sharp, playful, and full of warmth—it actually reminded me of the way my husband and I tease each other while taking on life one step at a time.
Donna Alam balances humor, heart, and swoony romance so well. Matias and Ryan feel real, like a couple you’d want to hang out with, laugh with, and cheer on. This book is the perfect mix of laugh-out-loud moments and emotional depth, and it left me smiling long after I finished the last page.
If you’re looking for a romance that’s smart, fun, and endlessly charming, this one is a must-read. 💕
This story started hilarious. The way Matt and Ryan met was absolutely out of left field and I loved how it started something neither anticipated.
Ryan is such a fire cracker and I loved her independence. I also though loved that Matt swooped in for her in a way where he didn’t want to dim her light he just wanted to make her brighter. These two truly saw each other and made the other better.
The heat at the start is very angsty and though you have some “ooo La la” moments this book is more about the characters journey and how they heal and help each other. It was so great getting to see past characters and seeing everyone mix and their happiness!
I picked up No Knight because I was in the mood for a lighthearted romance, and the blurb promised exactly that. It delivered on its premise with witty writing, fun banter, and a romance that felt both entertaining and authentic.
First Impressions The opening threw me for a moment—I expected the female lead’s perspective based on the blurb, but instead found myself reading a male character discussing a wedding. Once I realised what was happening, though, it clicked into place and hooked me quickly. From those early chapters, the tone was established as sharp, witty, and playful, with dialogue that often made me laugh out loud.
Plot & Pacing The story moves at a brisk pace. Within just a few chapters, I felt like I knew the characters and their world. It’s not bogged down in lengthy setup, which makes it easy to settle in and enjoy the ride. My favorite moment early on was the first interaction between Ryan and Matt—complete with Matt’s hilarious internal dialogue. That scene set the tone beautifully and raised my expectations for the lighthearted, character-driven story that followed. While this is largely a romance, there are enough small twists and developments to keep the plot engaging. By the end, it builds toward a satisfying crescendo that makes the journey feel worthwhile.
Characters The characters are a definite highlight. The three main men and their banter are endlessly entertaining, grounding the humour and making the story feel like you’re hanging out with friends. Ryan and Matt’s relationship is the heart of the book, and I loved how it developed naturally across different stages. Both of them are imperfect people with histories that still weigh on their choices, which made them feel real and relatable rather than stock romance leads. The dialogue felt very natural, especially paired with the internal thoughts that they both share with the reader. That extra layer adds humour and realism—since we rarely say everything we think, but the reader gets to enjoy it here.
Writing Style & Atmosphere Donna Alam’s prose is light, quick, and very witty, making the book a joy to read. Because the story is set in our world, the setting doesn’t require elaborate worldbuilding, but Alam still provides enough detail to bring each scene to life—whether it’s a location, a situation, or a new character.
Emotional Response This book was genuinely hard to put down. It felt almost like listening to a friend recount a funny, slightly chaotic story about how they fell in love. The humour carried me through, but the emotional beats landed as well, especially as the romance deepened and the story built toward its climax. I found myself invested in hoping everything would work out, and the final twists paid off nicely.
Critiques The only real critique I have is that the opening could feel slightly confusing if you’re expecting the story to start from the female lead’s perspective, but hearing the story from both sides is fun. Once I adjusted, it wasn’t an issue, but it might catch some readers off guard. The ending, too, felt a little sudden, though not unsatisfying, it left me with closure, but I wouldn’t have minded a slightly longer wrap-up.
Content Considerations The book does touch on childhood neglect and its lingering impact, but it’s handled thoughtfully and without overwhelming the otherwise light tone. There’s also a bit of steam, in line with what you’d expect from this style of romance.
Final Thoughts No Knight is a fun, witty, and surprisingly heartfelt romance. It offers charming characters, laugh-out-loud dialogue, and a relationship that feels both playful and grounded in real struggles. I’d recommend it to fans of contemporary romance who enjoy a mix of humour, heat, and sincerity.
Nearly a 4-star read from the very start, and it held that all the way through.
I enjoyed this book so much that I’m already looking for Donna Alam’s earlier works—and I’d happily recommend No Knight to other romance readers looking for something light, entertaining, and engaging.
🎧 No Knight by Donna Alam Series: My Kind of Hero, Book 3 (but you can absolutely jump in without a map) Narrators: Will M. Watt & Ariela Crow Length: 13 hours, 16 minutes Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
🔥 Tropes - One-night stand ➡️ friends ➡️ lovers - Mistaken identity (escort mix-up, and yes, it’s juicy) - Workplace romance with tension thicker than HR’s patience - Surprise pregnancy (cue emotional chaos) - Emotional trauma meets romantic persistence - Banter Olympics: gold medal level -
This is book three in the My Kind of Hero series, and while the characters do pop in from previous installments, you don’t need to read the others first. That said, once you finish this one, you’ll probably want to go back and see where these side characters got their drama from.
🎙️ Narration: Will Watt, Take a Bow Let’s be real....Will Watt rescued this book. His Irish accent? Flawless. His Spanish accent? Seamless. His spicy scene delivery? Illegal in 37 states. There are moments you’ll want to replay just to hear that brogue hit a line like it’s dipped in honey and sin. Ariela Crow is no slouch either, she brings the heroine’s emotional messiness to life with just the right mix of sass and softness. Together, they’re the kind of narrating duo that makes you forget you’re listening to fiction and start rooting for reconciliation like it’s your best friend’s love life.
🧍♂️ Matt: Matt is emotionally available, financially stacked, and chasing the heroine like she’s the last Uber on a rainy night. He’s charming, persistent, and occasionally exhausting...but never insincere. His pursuit is relentless, and while some listeners might wish he’d take a breather, Watt’s narration makes him feel like a man worth chasing back.
🧍♀️ Heroine: Smart, and Running Like She’s Training for a Marathon She’s got trauma, sass, and a talent for emotional self-sabotage. After a one-night stand that turns into a surprise pregnancy, she ghosts Matt and keeps ghosting him until the final chapter. Her arc is raw, real, and frustrating but Ariela Crow gives her voice enough vulnerability to make you root for her even when you want to shake her.
🐢 Slow Burn + Banter Overload This book is a masterclass in verbal foreplay. The banter is relentless clever, biting, and occasionally exhausting. If you love dialogue that dances and tension that simmers for hours, you’ll be in heaven. But if you’re looking for quick emotional resolution, prepare to wait. The payoff comes late, and the journey is full of emotional detours.
💬 Last Thoughts No Knight is a spicy, emotionally tangled listen with narration that deserves its own award. The story leans hard into banter, trauma, and romantic pursuit, with a heroine who runs and a hero who refuses to quit. While the pacing drags in places and the resolution feels last-minute, the narration especially Will Watt’s brogue-powered performance makes this audiobook worth every minute. It’s the third in the My Kind of Hero series, but you can jump in cold and still catch fire.
I received this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.
I pretty much went into this book blind and couldn't get enough! I simply adored Matt and Ryan's story and how much of a journey they went through to get their HEA.
I loved the premise of their meet cute, where Ryan mistakes Matt as an 'escort' she hired, but instead of being embarrassed by it she intends to get her money's worth 😂
Matt can't bear to see Ryan crying over her cheating ex (who also happens to be her boss) and how she's also been practically forced to attend his wedding - with the bride that's currently not her. Matt is determined to bring justice for Ryan and ends up tagging along as her plus one. It's not until he meets her work colleagues where he realises Ryan is not only bulletproof but has to put up with misogynistic behaviour on a daily basis. She is also hyper independent and resilient and Matt can help but fall a little in love with her.
Ryan and Matt hit it off and spend a passion fueled night which sees Ryan disappearing before the sun is up. She's gone, leaving behind a wad of cash for Matt's 'services'.
Fast forward a few months, Ryan ends up across the pond in London, which also happens to be where Matt resides. As fate would have it, their paths cross. Matt hasn't been able to move on from that night with Ryan and vows that now he's found her, he's not letting go. Ryan who's been once bitten, twice shy has her walls right up and is determined to keep him at arms length. However, Matt is not one to give up, especially now that he's not only fighting for Ryan, but the baby they're pregnant with.
I absolutely adored Matt in this book, who wanted to win over Ryan from the moment she walked out on him. He stepped up when it mattered the most and continued to show Ryan that he was dependable and that he wasn't going anywhere. Ryan has deep trust issues- courtesy of her late mom and doesn't want to rely on Matt nor risk getting her heart broken. She knows that it's not something she could bounce back from, especially with a baby to consider. Matt being Matt fights for her, his love never wavering and I loved how he was so patient with her to catch up to him 💗
The only reason why I knocked off one star was the fact that i thought the latter half of the book was really rushed. I would have liked to have seen more scenes of Matt trying to break down Ryan's walls and then just getting to know each other. Ryan stood firm pretty much to the end and it felt like she only gave in for the sake of their baby 🥺
However, I do commend Donna covering many sensitive topics on misogyny, child abuse and abandonment in a delicate manner!
Where do I start... The humour and emotional depth were my biggest highlights of this book. I resonated with Ryan on multiple levels. Her story felt real and relatable.
The writing was great. Not a single cringy moment, and that's rare these days. There were several occasions where I wasn't fully grasping the meaning of the dialogue between characters and somewhat felt stupid but that only happened on 2 or 3 occasions so I not sure what to make of it. Badly worded, Irish slang, who knows.. I loved the dual POV. Some say it's overused but I am a sucker for it. A significant part of the book (a third to be precise) is taken up by Ryan and Matt's initial meeting around the wedding and their night at the hotel. The pace was perfect, I wouldn't change any of it. But I feared how the rest of the book would read. I also felt like I needed more of Ryan in that moment as I felt like she went from reserved about his "escort" status to being all over his dick. Her disappearance after the hotel scene was predictable. I wondered how the author would reunite the characters after that moment and I knew it would be in a work-related situation, though it would have to be a very creative reunion if that happened in NY, so I guess Ryan relocating was sort of necessary.
The rest of the book remained nicely paced for my liking until we got to the end. Ryan's personal growth felt rushed and skimmed over. I personally like to be tortured a lot more when the inevitable temporary breakdown of the relationship comes, before that last big final reunion.
My favourite moment of the book was in the end when Ryan was using the 5-4-3-2-1 strategy to enjoy the moment of their wedding as opposed to getting herself calm in an overwhelming moment. I thought that was creative and added to the emotional depth of the moment.
The book reminded me of All Our Tomorrows by Catherine Bybee and The Stopover by T.L. Swan.

This book ❤️ We start off with Ryan hiring a "companion" to be her fake boyfriend at her former boyfriend/boss's wedding. She works at a hedge fund with an extremely finance bro environment. She's facing borderline sexual harassment that caused her to make up the boyfriend.
At the location she is supposed to meet her companion she mistakes Matt for him. He agrees to go along with the scheme, since his friends keep pushing him to be more spontaneous, but never really has the chance to come clean. Their dialog throughout the wedding as they go along is absolutely hilarious.
"The beauty in spontaneity. It turns out, Fin might be right. Fucking Fin, I think less charitably. He can shove the rest of his advice where the sun doesn’t shine - shove it right up there along with his beaded bracelets, which, if I know him, he'd use as anal beads"
Ryan sneaks out after their night together without leaving any of her information. We fast forward time and she's moved over to London. After unexpectedly finding out he is the new owner of the company, she bolts and finds herself sick. She reluctantly agrees to meet up with him.
"You didn't make me sad…you made me pregnant"
Matt really pushes to try to keep Ryan in London rather than going back to the states. She's very adamant on keeping their relationship strictly platonic for the baby's sake, while he is trying his best to get her to fall in love with him and stay.
"I grin and close the door with a solid thunk before I say or do anything stupid. Like High Five! I put a baby in you"
By the time we reach the birth… that scene.. My heart dropped. And the letter afterwards? Ripped my heart out. Thankfully it all worked out, but I would have loved to see more of what happened in their lives afterwards.
Loved the plot, but I wish we could have seen more development of their relationship and more scenes with his family. Their personalities sounded very intriguing and I think it would have added more depth to why he is such a family man.
