What does it mean to be brave? This is the question Caden must answer as he accompanies Thea, Ben, Rain, and Naomi back out under the dark clouds of the canopy, to rescue Viv from the deadly shadows and save a shattered Earth from the brink of destruction. Caden’s lazy, arrogant nature is tested as the group draws closer to finding Viv, forcing him to confront his inner demons and admit his feelings for Thea—even as their relationship is threatened by her ever-growing connection to Ben.
Will Caden discover his true potential? Or, when the group uncovers a devastating secret and faces a betrayal that has the power to turn the tide in the war with the shadows, will he abandon his friends and go back to a life of never-ending darkness?
Find out in The Gray Horizon, the exciting, action-packed sequel to The War Inside.
I believe that stories can change the world. I also believe that teens and young adults have eyes that are open and ears that are awake to the thrumming life hidden deep within great books. I write YA fiction because I'm in love with stories and because I want generations of young people to hold tight to the vastness of their potential—the potential that lies waiting in all of us. The world is ours for the making.
No matter who you are, you have the power to do great things.
I had forgotten a lot about the first book, so I was nervous starting The Gray Horizon. However, after a couple of chapters, I was able to re-familiarize myself with the characters and the world Kircher has created. I got really into the story again and I felt like it was a solid sequel.
I loved the idea behind the series and I was happy to see the author continue to develop her dystopian society. Readers got to learn more about how Thea and Caden’s world came to be and I found the history interesting. The author brings attention to important environmental issues in a very subtle way.
The characters grew more in the novel and I especially appreciated being inside Caden’s head. He has grown the most in the series and I love the budding romance between him and Thea. My only complaint is that I wish Thea had a bigger part to play in the sequel.
The pace was good and I did feel like there was more action and suspense in the sequel. The conclusion left me eager to see how the trilogy concludes. Overall, The Gray Horizon is a solid book for fans of teen dystopians.
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Thanks to the author for a copy of the novel for review!
well - I enjoyed the first book, but this book took a real long time to get going and really not much happens until the end - Enjoyed it but not sure I am intrigued enough to read the next one
I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I really enjoyed the sequel, I finished this within a day!
This is a dystopian/paranormal book in which the world the sky is covered in dark clouds from pollution. The sun can’t get through the clouds, which means nothing can grow and survive in this world. Food is scarce and it’s hard to survive. Everyday your just trying to survive until the next day and try and find food, and do the same the next day. Thea, our main character, sees a girl being beat up by 2 guys and runs to save her. While bringing Viv back to a healthy state, Thea notices that her bandages need to be changed. While changing, Thea sees this weird light coming off Viv’s abdomen. Whoever comes in contact with this light, will receive this light on them as well (if they believe in the light).
I am really excited that I got to review the 2nd book. I definitely enjoyed this! My biggest issue is connecting with the characters. I really like all the characters, but I’ve just had a hard time connecting with them. As well as the action, I felt that it was building up to this one epic battle scene. It comes, and within 3 pages, it’s over with. But when the action was there, holy cow! These dark creatures are freaky! They have human like qualities, but kind of remind me of ghosts.
My favorite thing about this series, is the world that M. Kircher has created. Not only is this dystopian, which is one of my favorite genres, but it includes paranormal aspects which is my favorite genre! I love that the romance isn’t the biggest part of this which is nice to get away from for a while. Yes, there is a couple scenes, which are adorable and sweet by the way. Rain is definitely my favorite character, he is hilarious and is head-over-heels for Viv. I love Viv and Rain’s relationship! I also really enjoy how this changes point of views every so often. I think the majority of The Gray Horizon is told from Caden’s point of view. Who, I really like!
Cover The cover works with the story. It’s clean and simple which I like.
Initial Thoughts Book two started right where book one finished off. It was a nice, smooth transition. I really enjoyed the first book so my expectations were pretty high for this one.
My New BFF Thea used to be my BFF but I found she was less intense in this book. I really admired her for her strength and how she could take care of herself but I found we didn’t see as much of her in this book. That made me sad. I really missed her. She was kind of just the pathetic girl who missed her new friend. She was too sad for me in this book but I wanted to keep loving her so bad. She disappointed me a little.
My Crush Caden was easily my favourite in this book. I thought it was hilarious how he never admitted that he liked Thea until it sort of hit him. I thought it was great seeing into his mind a little bit because we got to know him a little better. He definitely kept the book light. I thought he was super funny and entertaining. Whenever him and Rain got together I had a good laugh. The only thing that bothered me about him was that he could get a little cheesy when talking about Thea. Their relationship was really cute though.
Writing Style I think this book was fast paced with lots of action. There was a lot of information thrown at us though but the author made it fairly easy to keep track of everything. Most of the characters were all well developed, except Thea, who I was a little disappointed with.
Closing Thoughts I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a little short for me, but the author made good use of all her words. I think that it was typical for a second book. First and last books are always great but the middle books have a lot of setting up to do for the final battle. I could tell there was a lot of setting up in this book for an epic battle. I liked the dystopian society that the author has created in this series. I enjoyed that it was an adventure story as well as a dystopian, it made it a little different. I’d recommend this series to anyone who likes a fun and unique adventure.

It's probably not any big secret that I'm a fan of M. Kircher's work. Her first book, The War Inside stayed with me for quite some time after I'd finished it. Dream On (outside of this series) was one of the best books I've read in several years. So I was excited to read The Gray Horizon.
I wasn't disappointed.
There were parts of the first book that felt a little preachy to me. This isn't a bad thing, and shouldn't be considered a fault of the first book, but there were times I felt the author was veering a little too heavily into the religious imagery. While there was just as much of that imagery in this installment, I felt that it was less...preachy. Again, don't think that I'm dinging the book for this. Not at all. Post-apocalyptic books often have these components and there's a very good reason for it. The book of Revelation lends itself to it.
As with the first book, I thought the characters were very well done. Thea was a little disappointing. She was so strong in the first book and she had...not a supporting role here, but not a starring role. It was necessitated because Caden gets a lot more page time in this book (since we're in his head) and while I missed Thea a bit, I loved getting to know Caden better. The dynamics between the two were very well done and believable.
We also got more background about how the world got to the state it was in. When the first book started, we found out a lot about the world and how it worked quickly, but we weren't privy to a lot of the whys and hows. This book gave a lot of answers that we needed (and wanted...at least from my perspective) about what landed the characters in this mess in the first place.
There were parts of this book that were difficult to read. That was intentional. There were times I disliked what the characters did. I had to shut the book a few times and go do something else. But I cared about these characters. that's why I had such an extreme reaction. That's the mark of a good writer.
This is a quick read that you won't want to put down and I'm very much looking forward to the conclusion.
The first book is told from Thea's point of view and this book is told from Caden's point of view. At the end of book one, Viv was taken by the shadows and Thea, Rain and Naomi made it to Maria's settlement. In the beginning of this book, Thea, Rain, Naomi and Maria's son Ben set out to find Viv. Ben is a tracker and his skills come in handy. Caden realizes his attraction to Thea is deeper than he's used to. He gets jealous of the attention she pays Ben and then Naomi helps stir the pot.
Meanwhile, Captain Steele receives a visitor who brings him out of the darkness and helps him realize there's a better life in the light. He's resistant to the help but decides to give it a try and is surprised by what he finds.
Towards the end, there's a betrayal which is painful for all involved and it sets off a devastating tragedy. I was feeling devastated along with the rest of the group and then there was a twist that changes everything. The ending set up the third and final book quite nicely and I'm excited to see how this ends!
I loved this book! The characters learn more about themselves and each other, some good and some bad. There's a lot of traveling and I tend to lose interest in sections of books when this happens, but I didn't with this one. Ms. Kircher's writing held my attention and I kept reading to find out what would happen next. This is a series that is worth reading and I'm looking forward to book 3!
Content: Mild swearing; some kissing. Clean!
I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.
The Gray Horizon by M. Kircher is a knockout sequel to The War Inside. The story resumes with characters Thea, Caden, Rain, Viv...to name a few. I love the way (it's lyrical and beautiful) Ms. Kircher writes about light and dark and how those elements effect her characters, the world they live in, and to a degree, her readers.
It's refreshing to read a book where those written words can make the reader stop, sit up and ponder about the musing in a book and how that can translate to real life.
The Ancient One...oh my. If things weren't challenging enough, wait until you stumble across this twist in the story. I enjoyed the way weakness and strengths were executed in The Gray Horizon. It was well balanced and reminded me that even the strongest person has weakness and even the weakest can emerge from nowhere and surprise you.
The characters were unique, individual and fleshed out well. They each brought something different to the table making this a fast paced, diverse read where you find yourself flipping fast through the pages eager to find out what happens next.
This is an amazing Dystopian read, high on this readers radar waiting patiently for book 3 in this trilogy.
If you're a fan of Dystopian YA Fiction, you'll want to snatch this one up in a hurry and make sure to clear your schedule. It was hard to pace myself once I started. Hats off!
Fantastic! This sequel flowed from book one seamlessly. Just perfect.
As Thea and her friends search for Viv, they encounter the roughest of conditions.
The characters have depth. They're all very different, yet likeable in that they're so realistic. Every one of them made me laugh. :) Equally as outstanding is the detailed settings. I could imagine being there with them every step of the way. There is literally not one bad thing about this series. It's marvelous!
This story is about choices, freedom, good, evil, and everything in between. It is a strong reminder to go outside, look at the bright blue sky, appreciate the brilliant sun, feel the rain, and relax. Leave the cell phones, I Pads, I Pods, laptops, etc. inside. Sit and read a paperback book. Take a walk, alone or with someone. Talk to each other without the gadgets. Feel the grass beneath your bare feet. Even if it's just a minute or two a day, leave it all behind. :) That's what this series make me want to do. Every single day. :)
This is book two and it is blindingly brilliant. Just like book one.
Can't wait for book 3.
Love it.
Highly recommended to everyone.
I got this book from the group LOP for an honest review.
The book starts out with Thea and her group tracking down Viv after the shadows captures her. It is also told from Caden's point of view. I thought this was cool so now I know what he's thinking when he's around Thea. Their relationship develops in this book and I'm glad, but I feel like the other characters in their group Rain, Ben, and Naomi were very underdeveloped. I still didn't know anything about Naomi by the end of the book and Rain is mostly still drooling over her. Why does Naomi do certain things and why was she MIA when facing the ancient one? I feel like she will betray the group or have an agenda or something just because we don't really know anything about her. The dialogue I found to be really cheesy, whenever Cade talked about the light Or Thea. I did enjoy Captain Steele and Devon's relationship, and his reluctance to let her in but she wasn't one to back down. Overall I found the book to be okay but not one that really stood out to me.
I received this book from the author through Lovers of Paranormal in exchange for an honest review.
The Gray Horizon is an excellent second installment of series. The story picks up soon after the events at the end of the previous installment. While the opening was somewhat slow, Kircher used this time to further develop her characters and the world they live in. We got to see more into the minds of these characters and how finding the goodness within themselves changed them for the better. We also saw some progress on new and old characters finding the light within themselves as well as their darkness'. I liked the bits of detail that not only gives us more information on how this world came to be, but also linked itself to the world that we live in now.
It was an entertaining read that really picked up toward the middle. I was sad to see some characters go, but I will be interested in seeing how this series will come to an end. I will definitely be returning for the final book!
Book 2 picks up where Book 1 left off. Viv has just been taken by The Shadows and Thea and the rest of her friends must find her before it’s too late. Thea dreams of how The Shadows are torturing Viv as they take her to The Ancient One. They know they have to hurry if they’re going to save her. Viv holds the secrets to defeating The Ancient One but she isn’t ready yet to defeat him and The Shadows. If she doesn’t stop him, he will destroy everything.
I really enjoyed The Gray Horizon. The characters learn to work together more than they did in the first book and the relationship between Thea and Caden starts to develop a bit more. Like the first book, The Gray Horizon is loaded with adventure and I could not stop turning the pages to find out what happened. While you don’t need to read the first book to enjoy The Gray Horizon, I would recommend that you read both so that you understand all of the details. I cannot wait to read the third book!
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review for LoP and I would purchase it and the next installment. The setting is in the future where evil, greed and technology have brought the earth to the near apocalypse. Small pockets of people have survived in their every man for himself, dog eat dog world. Then, like the Christ child, a new child (Viv) comes forth to bring the light to this dark, evil, dying world. The light is rising again through our teenagers as they learn how to use the light for good but they must face many dark challenges within their own souls and against the harsh environment and true evil. The author paints a good picture and the storyline is easy to follow. This is a great follow-up to the first book in the series “The War Inside”.
We received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This is a book for people who enjoy predictable, flat Christian stories. There was nothing engaging about this book. The characters were a small collection of traits, and the plot was primarily travelling and a running commentary about what awful creatures people are for ruining the Earth. The clear ‘be good and spread the light around the world’ commentary overrode any chance of character development or a plot. All in all, this was paper-thin, trite, and tedious.
The journey continues with Viv, Thea, Caden, Rain and others as they battle the darkness, the shadows and the Ancient One. I really like how the characters develop and we see their weaknesses and their strengths. There is also a surprise twist at the end that I wasn't expecting. The middle was a little slow for me just because of the constant battles and attention to detail I felt like there was a constant cycle of battling but it makes sense in the end why all of that occurred. You just have to stick with it. I'll enjoy seeing how it plays out in the end.
This is an amazing novel that completely envelopes the reader. It was intriguing, captivating my every thought...a book I couldn't put down. It is an action packed novel, the sequel to The War Inside, which if you haven't read, I highly recommend it.
M. Kircher will leave you wanting more. You won't want the story to end...it will leave you closely connected with the characters.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal). Normally the second book in the series is not as good as the first. In this case it is not true. Death, Violence, and Betrayal? What else would you want from a book? I have already recommended this book to a few friends and I will continue to recommend it. Patiently waiting until the next one gets out.
Love it! This second installment of the Horizons Trilogy is wonderful! The story advances in vibrant prose, so descriptive, it is as if a movie is playing in your head. I cannot wait to read book three... Can there also be a book four please?
