This is an excellent analysis of Barbara Pym's work. I am almost finished rereading the twelve novels now in publication (there were only ten published at the time of this book), and Nardin's insights were very helpful.
Really liked this. Ms Nardin's book is from 1985, the height of "Pym-mania", and reflects some lack of knowledge in certain areas of Pym's life, not to mention that a couple of novels from the archive, which would subsequently be published, had not yet been released. But this is just to situate the volume in its context. Nardin has a wide-ranging, intuitive understanding of Pym's novels, of their place within the broader canon of English literature, and the many themes and concerns of the author's work. A reliable volume.
