Savage #20

Savage Hero

Rate this book
A New York Times Bestseller

To the Crow people the land was a gift from the First Maker, a place of snowy mountains and sunny plains, where elk and antelope grazed by brightly tumbling streams. But Chief Brave Wolf knew that proud heritage was threatened by the pony soldiers under Yellow Hair's command, for they spread death and destruction wherever they rode. To Mary Beth Wilson, Custer's Last Stand meant the end of her marriage and a lonely trek back East with her young son David. When renegades attacked her wagon train, carrying off her beloved child, she thought her heart would break, until rescue came in the form she least expected; a powerful Crow warrior whose gentle eyes promised she would know nothing but tenderness at his hands. This beautiful man was both her savior and her enemy, her Savage Hero.

I am reminded why I haven't read anything from this author in years. Edwards was one of my first romance authors when I was in school. I have since matured in my reading preferences-- or at least my expectations in the writing styles of what I read. As a teacher I would be pointing out that there are other words for speaking other than "said." My creative writing students are better at branching out in their word choice. The other downer was the fact that literally after one night Mary Beth finds herself in love with Brave Wolf-- she has been kidnapped, separated from her son, and is in danger of rape and murder, but after being rescued, and despite not trusting him she falls in love with him?! I know sometimes romance novels require suspension of belief in timing of "falling in love" but this one is just too much. Even more, she completely moves on from worrying about her son way to fast. Add in the fact that it seems like attempts at providing something plot wise they fall completely flat, so not even the plot can help where the characters fail.

Taking this book for what it is, my only real qualm with it is how ridiculously quickly the characters "fell in love." There was so much opportunity (I mean, like 300 pages...) for actual bonding and development of feelings for a satisfying slow burn. All in all, though, this the least offensive "savage" romance novel I've read.

This story was okay. It started with Night Horse, and then went into the story of Brave Wolf and Mary Beth. I would've like to have read more of Night Horse and his journey.

I started reading this author about two years ago. And I love her style of writing. This one had me guessing the whole way through if things were gonna happen how I wanted them to.
