Hawaiian Herbal Medicine stands alone as a landmark book. Never out of print, it uses extensive research, historical documents, and interviews with Native Hawaiians who were experts in their field. The knowledge of many of these kahuna reaches back to ancient times when Hawaiian medical practices were based on rigorous training. This included mental and physical diagnosis, and the complex use of medicinal plants. Today interest in herbal healing continues to increase among physicians and the general public. At the core of this book is world view which combines the spirit and the body. Hawaiian Herbal Medicine has both a practical approach, and shows readers the traditional importance of unseen things that must be resolved to achieve health and happiness.
Fascinating and elaborate account of the medicine and medical practices of Ancient Hawai'i. Not only are the specific plants and remedies described in detail but also the everyday life of the Hawaiians.
What is really special is reading the actual notes of an 19th century kahuna la'au lapa'au. We see the translation but also a copy of the observations written in Hawaiian.
This is a very special book and one I would highly recommend for those interested in Hawaiian history.
I saw this in a used bookstore in Kailua and couldn't put it down. It gives a lot of history of herbalism here in Hawaii, talks about plants specific to different areas, lots of story, and valuable info. The updated edition has lovely photos too.
