Shatter Me #1-3

Shatter Me Starter Pack: Books 1-3 and Novellas 1 & 2: Shatter Me, Destroy Me, Unravel Me, Fracture Me, Ignite Me

Rate this book

The Shatter Me series is perfect for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalizing romance like Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu. Tahereh Mafi has created a captivating and original story that combines the best of dystopian and paranormal and was praised by Publishers Weekly as "a gripping read from an author who's not afraid to take risks." This collection includes the three novels and two novellas in the series.

Shatter Me: No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal, but The Reestablishment has plans for her. Plans to use her as a weapon. But Juliette has plans of her own. After a lifetime without freedom, she's finally discovering a strength to fight back for the very first time—and to find a future with the one boy she thought she'd lost forever.

Destroy Me: Set after Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me and before Unravel Me, the spellbinding sequel, Destroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

Unravel Me: Juliette is still haunted by her deadly touch. But now that she has teamed up with other rebels with powers of their own, she'll be able to fight back against The Reestablishment to save her broken world. With the help of these new allies, she'll also finally learn the secret behind Adam's—and Warner's—immunity to her killer skin.

Fracture Me: In this electrifying sixty-page companion novella to the New York Times bestselling Shatter Me series, discover the fate of the Omega Point rebels as they go up against The Reestablishment. Set during and soon after the final moments of Unravel Me, Fracture Me is told from Adam's perspective.

Ignite Me: With Omega Point destroyed, Juliette doesn't know if the rebels, her friends, or even Adam are alive. But that won't keep her from trying to take down The Reestablishment once and for all. Now she must rely on Warner, the handsome commander of Sector 45. The one person she never thought she could trust. The same person who saved her life. He promises to help Juliette master her powers and save their dying world . . . but that's not all he wants with her.

Well! here I am ready to be backhandled for hating this series
But I DO NOT CARE!😅

First let me say that I've read the whole series even the novellas
Just because I was told it gets better and because I was promised a strong Female lead (a unicorn amongst books🦄)
Oh! How disappointed was I!!!!
I am not going to retell the summary, by now almost everyone knows it
So I'll just dive on the reasons why I HATED this book
But just a warning, possible spoilers ahead
🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫
So my issue with this book falls under 4 areas

1-cheap immitation of other books especially ACOTAR
2- different POV of characters
3- white-man hero complex
4- but mainly weak FL

+ ONE BIIIG ISSUE THAT DESERVES ITS OWN MENTION

So let me role my sleeve and dive in

1- there was a sense of deja vu while I was reading the series (where did I read this before?)
- Jullietts "i am not insane" repeated over and over is immitating Carden's letter to Jude in the Cruel Prince (I also remember seeing the same thing in another older book but cant remember the name)
- Warner is depicted like any other supposedly dreamy boy (tall, blonde, strong, smart....) the perfect perfection...or is he???
Never mind he captures J. Puts her in jail to suffer for almost a year, stalk her in jail, tries to force her to do things, makes her believe she killed a child, corners her, wouldnt take no for an answer so she had to shoot him
Never mind all that bec. Like any dark romance mafia, Tahere set out to make Warner the ultimate book boyfriend
- but the obvious immitation was the ACOTAR theme of hating on the first love interest to make way for the grey red flag character
We all loved Adam in the first book
He inlisted as a soldier for his brother
He helps J. Who promised him to be together
He was tortured horrendesly by Warner
But do we excuse him for shouting at J. for wanting to bring W. Into the fold and not understanding the trauma Adam went through? Oh no how could he shout at poor defenssless J who needed the blond guy to rescue her!!!!
So now we hate Adam and root for Warner whose ONLY redeeming quality is loving J.
He is a bad son (couldnt save his mother but went against his father for his gf)
Bad brother (couldnt even make a connection)
But hey, at least he is willing to let J do whatever she wants which was basically nothing

But this is not surprising since both Acotar and shatter me got the idea from a Turkish novel "Heart Beats"

2- by book 3 we get the feeling that Tahere is bored of J &W cause now she has other important thing to focus on, her POC characters
Now Kenji is in the center and a bunch of other character whom i forgot their names but somehow deserved their own chapters
I loved Kenji
And I loved Nazeera more (she gets a special mention)
But why all of a sudden they became the main characters?????

3- Tahere is a Muslim female writer. So i wished had she made J. The white blond and Warner a POC.bec as it is, it showed her white man hero complex
It is always Warner to the rescue

Which takes me to point 4

There is no way
No reason
No arguement
That could convince me that Julliette is a strong FL
Yes she has this fatal power, but the only 2 times we see her use it ione by accident and the other when she kills her sister!!!
She is a whiny cry baby who wants everyone to excuse her because she had "trauma"
Well sweetheart, so did everone else in this series even your precious Warner, but you dont see them cower in the corner refusing to participate!
I found myself laughing at every scene that featured J.
At one point she was like "I have to show everyone I am strong! I know what to do! I'll shave off my hair" 🤣🤣
The only time I felt she had a little punk is when i thought she killed all the representitives. I was like "at least she did something" only for Tahere to throw this out the window in the next book
She was useless
And I hated her when she saw her sister (a twist that was just thrown there for no reason except week writing) in the hurtful condition but forgot about her the minute Warner comes to her rescue

Nazeera was way way a better female representation than J.
She had a goal
Determination
Took action and control

J. Had nothing of those

She couldnt even kill Anderson

Which brings me to the final point of why I hated this book
A point that almost made me puke 🤮🤮🤮
The idea that Julliette is attracted to the Anderson DNA
Oh my god! Just thinking of this one made my stomach turn
She got Adam
She got Warner
Tried to get Anderson
And what next? Wait for James to be of age???????????

What the hell was the purpose of this plot twist?????

Finally, i just want to add that Tahere is a very smart writer
She knew exactly what would appeal to young adults especially teenagers
She monopolized every Romance idea to the extant that she sacrificed the plot

I would never say that is a post apocalyptic series
It is a romance
Cheap one at most
And that is that

I'm so disappointed in my self for actually reading all of them. The writing style is reminiscent of a middle schoolers wattpad story. All of the characters have the personality of literal flour. Juliette is is a joke, and Warner is an absolute creep, and don't even get me started on Adam and the half brother plot line. Kenji was the only entertaining part of the whole series, and that's a stretch. Like this series romanticizes so many unhealthy things its so ew. Granted I read the whole series in a month when I was in middle school, but it left such a bad impression that I seethe in genuine anger whenever people tell me they like this series.

Wow after reading this book I can say it seriously messed me up. Whilst reading the first book I kept thinking what on earth am I reading but I kept going. Then you get to warners POV and OMG so many emotions juliettes diary was so well written you could physically feel her pain and most of all the pain warner feels for her.
I read it for the romance I found the ending rushed but the love story blew me away. Especially the little moments Juliette and Warner share.

In a weird sense Iv been attracted to warners character since the beginning despite his negative portrayal and then you keep reading it's just

First of all I absolutely have to mention… THE COVERS. Oh my eyes. They are so so so beautiful. Hats off to whoever designed these beauties. The books are worth buying just to have such gorgeousness on my bookshelf. *swoon*

I remember when I first read Shatter Me I was intrigued by the idea but a little put of by Tahereh Mafi’s writing style. It was too much for me, too poetic and struck me as trying too hard and failing. It was distracting me from the story. Some of the lines had me stopping like really?! Why oh why? That makes no sense and is actually quite disturbing.

“My words wear no parachutes as they fall out of my mouth”

“The sky is raining bricks right into my skull.”

“My eyes break open. Two shattered windows filling my mouth with glass.”

“He shifts and my eyes shatter into thousands of pieces that ricochet around the room, capturing a million snapshots, a million moments in time. Flickering images faded with age, frozen thoughts hovering precariously in dead space, a whirlwind of memories that slice through my soul.”

Ugh, Its like that all the way through, constantly. It really grates on my nerves. It’s just unneeded and quite frankly annoying.

Despite this I pushed on through the book. I’d heard some good reviews that advised me to just get used to the writing style and keep going. So I did. Eventually you just sort of get used to the over use of metaphors that barely make sense.

The world its set in isn’t too bad but it isn’t focused on enough, or else we missed it in-between the personifications of the sun and metaphors about breathing. Its a typical dystopia, world gone wrong little group of rebels out to save everything. Except this group of rebels all have magical powers.

It’s very X-Men gone wrong. They keep saying they have some big plan but really they don’t seem to be doing much. From what I gathered there aren’t very many of them and they plan to attack someone or someplace in Sector 45 where they live and win (plausible), then they’re gonna somehow use this victory to save everyone across the entire country… (not plausible). It struck me as badly thought out.

And Omega Point (rebels really cool little hideout) just seems to be used as a stage for Juliette and Adams relationship (if you can even call it that) drama. I mean come on! So much potential to make me fall in love and be dying to go to Omega Point and its just tarnished by stupid arguments. This at least is pointed out by the fantastic Kenji, who straight up lets them know that they are being dumb. (Kenji is fab btw).

In the first book Juliette is annoying whiny and childish. I get that she’d been locked up for ages on her own so she was bound to be less than her best but ugh seriously, I just wanted someone to put her back in her cell.

Adam has the personality of a potato. An especially bland potato. He is boring and dull and all he has going for him is his ridiculous insta-love for Juliette. I HATE INSTA-LOVE. They tried to play it off as childhood sweethearts but seriously she let someone cheat off her when she was nine and suddenly Adam thinks she’s gods gift. He treats her like some kind sweet innocent little flower that he needs to protect. She’s a kind person, that doesn’t make her an endangered species Adam, jeez. Juliette is tough under all her whining, anyone could see that. She needs to be pushed and challenged to wake up the real Juliette inside, not coddled.

I get Juliette instant attraction to Adam, first person to be able to touch her her whole life? Shes gonna feel something. That something however is not love, if anything its lust and the first taste of friendship she’s ever had all mushed up. And that’s being generous to Mr Dull Potato Adam. The only redeeming quality to Adam is his love for is brother James. I do love it when YA shows some good sibling relationships.

As for the other characters; James is adorable and funny, loved him. Kenji is fantastic, seriously fantastic. Id give him his own book. I want him as my new best friend, loved loved loved him. Castle was not so great although I did like his and Kenji’s relationship.

Finally, Warner. My oh my oh my.
What a character. I think hes responsible for at least 3 stars of my review. Without him I would not have been able to read on. He is amazing, fanastic, brilliant, perfect… AAAGH, there are no words for him…

He is exactly what I needed Juliette needed. He brings out the best in her even when he’s not with her. And so by the end of the series Juliette becomes a kickass main character who knows what she wants, all thanks to my boyfriend Warner.

The first two books are mediocre, 2 stars for Shatter Me and 3 for Unravel Me. Ignite me is by far the best of the triology, 4 stars. Destroy Me gets 3.5 and Fracture Me gets a measly 1.5 stars because Adam is just so BORING.

Overall I give the series as a whole 3.5 stars. If you can power through the first book then well done! and keep going!

The Shatter Me series romanticizes abuse; click here for an ongoing, in-depth commentary about abuse romanticism in this series and others.

| Reader Fox Blog |

It must have been over a year ago now that I said I was going to be rereading the Shatter Me series in order to shed some light on the deeply problematic aspects of abuse romanticism that exists within the series. Well, I'd started but eventually lost track due to life and my desire to read books that were more deserving of my attention.

Last night I finally started.

I ordered physical copies of the first three books and the short stories that exist in between them. I opened Shatter Me last night and began. As of this moment, I have only annotated the first nine and a half chapters. It's interesting, reading this book again. I had enjoyed it the first time. Never in my life had I expected that the author would try to manipulate me into liking the despicable Warner.

Forgiveness is important in life, for sure, but I don't think it plays a role here. There are some things that are unforgivable. And honestly? If Warner genuinely wanted to develop himself and become a better person, it should have been with someone else. To have Juliette degrade herself and regress entirely in her character development to the point that she falls for her abuser was disturbing on a number of insane levels.

Warner's obsession with Juliette is terrifying. And I haven't even truly scratched the surface yet.

I am baffled by the fact that people find their relationship romantic. I am deeply saddened by the fact that "broken" characters somehow are given the okay to horrifically damage their partners in the name of love. As if the fact that they love this person makes it okay that they hurt them in these ways.

It doesn't make it okay. He did not deserve or earn her forgiveness. And once I've finished annotating all of these books, I will share with you all why that is.

To any girl who meets a boy who was "broken" by the way someone in his life treated him, who gets treated horribly by this boy -- run. His brokenness does not make it okay for him to hurt you. His brokenness does not mean that he deserves your forgiveness. There are plenty of people who suffer abuse and do not lash out and abuse the people they "love."

Mafi manipulates her readers to try and force them to like Warner. She creates characters and then manipulates them into unrealistic actions in order to push them in the direction she wanted, even if it doesn't actually make any sense to do so. In this way, I see these books as being very poorly written.

But the worst thing of all is the fact that abuse is lauded as romantic in these novels. Warner may hurt Juliette and be forgiven for it time and time again all because, beneath his terrible acts, his motives are supposedly based in the fact that he loves her. Nevermind that time and time again his love is portrayed as selfish and only insofar as she benefits him.

Like the novels, if you wish. But at least like them knowing the facts: Warner is abusive. Juliette and Warner are in an abusive relationship.

EVERYONE NEED TO READ THESE BOOKS
THE PLOT. THE CHARACTERS. THE ENDING.
IT'S PERFECT.

And of course, it had to be Warner. I read the book without expecting anything, I was so engrossed in Juliette's words and pain, I literally zoned out of reality and when Adam came, I was skeptical, I thought maybe it's a sick test, they will introduce her to a human the take the human away.
Then all of the things happened, why Adam got into the army, and who the Commander is. Oh my lord, of course anyone would hate the Commander, even how handsome he is, he did not have the best approach though in some way he always wanted Juliette to be strong and stand on her own than treats her like a fragile damsel in distress who needs saving all the time. Which Adam did!

description

I won't say I hate Adam, I love the guy though he's really cheesy and it's kinda lame BUT he's a guy who need a sweet girl and Juliette might be silent when people bullied her but she is not weak or sweet. For someone to be able to stay sane, calm in an asylum for so many days, you had to have a strong mental psychic. And when she found out she was not the only one with ability, she started feeling better about herself, 'she was not a freak'. Which was something Warner insisted on.

I did not hate Warner I first, I thought he was just some greedy Commander who was smitten with Juliette's beauty and ability, but man I did not know the REAL WARNER! He is.... IS TWICE THE MAN ADAM COULD HAVE BEEN . A man that will stand by you, not put you behind because he trust you that you can fight, because he helped you to stand your ground. He encouraged your convictions rather than mock them. A man who would rather die on his feet than his knees, a man in need of love and attention. A bruise child within.
And at the end, he gets his heaven. I was so happy for both of them.

Ummmmm. Unpopular opinion. ((SPOILERS AHEAD))

The build up was good, great even. But the fight... that was it? PFFFT AKDHBGHEGB

- Aaron Warner? Overrated--and insane.
- Juliette Whose-Last-Name-I-Forgot? Utterly annoying.
- Kenji Whose-Last-Name-I-Also-Forgot? Literal BOSS BITCH. I love him. Star of the show.
- Adam Kent? Is the equivalent to Tamlin the Tool. The amount of times I wanted to slap both him and Juliette-

~RANT CONTINUED.~

The amount of times I stopped reading because of how annoying Juliette was is astronomical. I'm actually impressed I managed to finish it... and you know why? Because everyone's all, "OHMYGOD AARON WARNER IS EVERYTHING!! [insert heart-eye emoji]" when really it's, "HOLY SHIT AARON WARNER IS FUCKING CRAZY, ARE YOU SHITTING ME RIGHT NOW?? [insert spam skull emoji]"

Seriously, I couldn't get over how weird and crazy Warner was and then alluva sudden he's all mushy with Juliette and calling her "Love", and I have to say.... their chemistry was.... weird. I dunno, it just wasn't sitting right with me.

Buuuuuuuut Adam and Juliette? It's like if Feyre stayed with Tamlin instead of going to Velaris with Rhys in ACOMAF and through ACOWAR. Like, imagine that. It's a sinking ship.

I'm very glad it's over.

2.5 stars kindly rounded to 3 (for the sake of Kenji's amazing ass)

Shatter Me:
Original rating: ★★☆☆☆ Read in 2012
Rating after re-read: ★★☆☆☆ Read 5/11/19

Seven years later and this is still just as awful as I remembered. This first book is a hot, boiling ass mess and I will never understand the hype of it and why people tote it as the second coming. The writing is just above tolerable but the prose is laughably bad. Terrible, cheesy dialogue, a weak main character in Juliette and to top it off we get the bland bowl of oatmeal that is Adam Kent. *snores* Thank God for the love of my life Warner and my spirit animal Kenji because they made this book. Without them this would’ve been a one star read because I genuinely don’t like it. I will say that the next two books are leaps and bounds better but damn this first one is just a dumpster fire.

Destroy Me (1.5 Novella):
Original rating: ★★★★★ Read in 2013
Rating after re-read: ★★★★★ Read 5/11/19

I still love this novella with all of my heart and soul. It’s heartbreaking and emotional. I hate seeing what Warner has gone through and what he still goes through with his father. It’s fascinating being inside of his head and seeing a human side to him after the first book. Warner is one of my all time favorite book boyfriends and I will always love this short story. He’s such a tortured soul and I cannot get enough of him and I think this was wonderfully done and is an important part to not only Warner’s character but the series overall.

Unravel Me:
Original rating: ★★★☆☆ Read in 2013
Rating after re-read: ★★★☆☆ Read 5/12/19

The first 200 pages are incredibly slow and boring to get through but then Warner and his father show up and shake shit up and things finally get going. This has a lot of great action and I loved the ending but there’s so much wangst between Juliette and Adam that I just wanted to bash my head into the wall. Juliette is starting to come into her own here and while she is still incredibly whiny and passive, I can see the development and I think her absolute best moments were when she was interacting with Warner, Kenji and Castle. All three of them really brought out something different in her that I enjoyed.

Fracture Me (2.5 Novella):
Original rating: ★★★☆☆ Read in 2013
Rating after re-read: ★☆☆☆☆ Read 5/12/19

LMAO. A boring novella about a boring bowl of oatmeal. Yawn. Doesn’t add anything of importance. Just solidifies my hatred for Adam.

Ignite Me:
Original rating: ★★★☆☆ Read in 2014
Rating after re-read: ★★★★☆ Read 5/13/19

Okay, so this one surprised me the most out of this entire re-read of the series. I remember thinking that this last book was decent and I had enjoyed it enough but there was something about it this time around that I really liked. There’s a lot of character development in this and with the exception of one person (Adam, because of course it’s him) it’s very well done. It’s about Juliette tapping into her inner strength and finally becoming the person she should’ve been from the jump. Warner’s character development was honestly my favorite of the two of them because he has a lot more emotional growth and moments where we really get to see his character stripped down to it’s most basic level and it was wonderful. The two of them together bring out the best in each other without trying to change compromise who that person is as an individual and I appreciated. They grew on their own but together if that makes any sense and it makes their relationship feel very solid. This was a pretty good ending to the series but I can definitely see how Mafi left it open in the end to write more.

Overall, this series is like candy. I re-read all of these in three days. They’re not all that good (minus the last one) but they’re addicting as hell. I’m looking forward to finally continuing on with the series and seeing where she takes the characters from here.

I am consumed with this series.

I practicality binged the first 5 novels and novellas.

The story is about 17 year old Juliette Ferrars who has a lethal touch. Anything living she touches dies.

Juliette’s character development is exquisite. Watches her throughout all the novels grow into who she becomes during Ignite me was perfect.

Adam sucks. Not only because of all the hurtful words he says to Juliette. Constantly doubting her intelligence, thinking of her as a “Damsel in distress” in Fracture me, always viewing her as a “good girl”. He almost treats her like shes a dog. Alike she doesn’t have her own way to think and speak. It especially feels like he was written never to stand a chance at winning Juliette over in the end.

Kenji is perfect, he provides a great comedic relief. Juliette’s and his relationship was well needed for the story and i appreciate their relationship growing over time.

AARON WARNER. holy hell, his character development is amazing. I cannot believe how much i feel so hard for his gentle touch towards Juliette and kind words. I’m obsessed with their relationship. The build i thought was great. Their trust in each other, prefect. Their love, beautiful.

I love this series! A perfect blend between action and Romance. A well written series, and stunning story.

Ignite Me: 1 stella e mezzo, e mi pare pure troppo

- Lo stile di scrittura è allucinante: la traduzione non aiuta, ma ho potuto constatare che pure l'originale faceva abbastanza paura. E' un susseguirsi di metafore pretenziose e senza alcun senso (questa volta non avevo nessuna voglia di segnarmi gli esempi peggiori, perché altrimenti avrei dovuto ricopiare interi capitoli); ripetizioni a go-go e amenità simili;

- Non succede nulla o quasi. 3 libri e 2 novelle, e forse (e sottolineiamo "forse") l'unico volume in cui avvengono avvenimenti che portano avanti la trama è il secondo, poi per il resto il nulla. Il triangolo amoroso porta via il 90% della storia e il word-building è di fatto inesistente. Mi aspettavo un po' di azione nel libro finale, ma la Mafi liquida tutta la faccenda negli ultimissimi capitoli, con un anticlimax da paura (il cattivone muore in due secondi, grazie ad un piano che fa acqua da tutte le parti messo in piedi da una banda di ragazzetti che dovrebbero essere la versione poraccia degli Avengers...seriously?);

- la Restaurazione: invece di ammorbarci con scene di limone selvaggio, la Mafi poteva anche spiegarci meglio il sistema di governo, i suoi obiettivi, come caspita ha fatto a prendere il potere. E invece no. Ci basti sapere che i capi di questo sistema globale sono tutti dei cattivoni che riducono la gente alla fame, ammazzano cittadini inermi, la cultura, il pianeta, la galassia e l'universo. Bene, ma chi è sta gente? Da dove sono usciti? Ci viene fatto conoscere uno dei capi supremi del movimento e sappiamo solo che è un sadico, dalle scarse capacità genitoriali che però è bellissimo e si veste molto bene. Decisamente un po' pochino;

- il triangolo è gestito non male, di più. Tanto che quando non sa bene come giustificare il cambio nella ship, la Mafi decide di rovinare completamente il personaggio di Adam (che già era inutile di suo), trasformandolo in una specie di idiota, violento e perennemente isterico. Santificando al contempo Warner: ammetto che lui è stato, insieme a Kenji, il mio personaggio preferito, ma il ragazzo ha decisamente qualche problema. Ma la Mafi imbastisce insieme una serie di giustificazioni, una più ridicola dell'altra, per cercare di alleggerire le azioni commesse da Warner nel primo libro. E anche qui i cliché non si sprecano: picchiato dal padre, madre malata e fuori di testa; apparentemente indifferente al fatto che mezzo mondo lo odia e lo vuole morto perché lui non se ne fa niente del giudizio altrui; lui non ha mai voluto trasformare Juliette in un'arma, ma ha dovuto propinare una scusa al padre psycho perché non poteva dirgli che stava cercando una cura per la madre, e via discorrendo. E dopo averci scartavetrato i maroni per due libri su quanto lei fosse innamorata di Adam, che anche se non poteva starci insieme avrebbe amato solo lui per il resto della vita (ah sì, ricordiamo che la protagonista in questione ha 17 anni e i due galletti ruspanti 18 e 19, quindi tutti grandi maestri di vita), Juliette finisce con l'altro. Il tutto sarebbe stato anche più naturale, senza tutte quelle inutili dichiarazioni di amore eterno. Come gli fa notare Kenji, dopo aver passato una vita in solitudine e schifata da tutti, la fanciulla si è lanciata a pesce sul primo tizio che le ha mostrato un po' di compassione...non era difficile da capire. Non mi lancerò su quanto sia malsana la relazione tra i tre, soprattutto quella tra Juliette e Warner, perché altrimenti non la finiamo più;

- i personaggi principali: vabbé Adam è il classico bello ma senza uno straccio di personalità e profondità caratteriale (tranne quando lo trasformano per magia nel re di tutti gli stronzi); Warner lo preferivo quando sembrava un semplice sadico, perché alla fine ci vogliono far credere che sia solo un ragazzo incompreso che ha bisogno di affetto. Juliette è la peggio di tutti: questo dovrebbe essere una serie che mette in primo piano il percorso di crescita di questa ragazza. Il problema è che è tutto molto forzato: passiamo dalle paturnie sul suo suo essere un mostro, alle lagne infinite sui problemi di cuore, alle crisi isteriche, fino allo step finale, in cui lei, a 17 anni (vale sempre la pena di ricordarlo, 17 anni, quasi senza istruzione e completamente ignorante del mondo), si dice pronta a guidare prima una ribellione, e poi un'intera nazione. Il cliché tipicamente americano dell'adolescente pronto a sacrificare la sua vita in nome del greater good l'ho sempre trovato terribilmente irritante e sembra che tutti gli autori YA sentano il bisogno di propinarlo in tutte le salse. Passiamo in un lampo dall'autocommiserazione più becera a discorsoni pieni di aria fritta sulla crescita personale: peccato, perché se il tutto fosse stato scritto meglio, ci poteva anche stare;

In trash we trust!

This was not for me.

I read shatter me and destroy me in May and they didn't draw me in enough to continue. Finally in November/December I managed to finish the rest.

It is 100% a romance. For the dystopian parts I missed world building.
The action scenes lack development, they just happen so fast and conveniently that it is unbelievable and fails to grip you, e.g. outdoors scenes, battlefield scenes. Usually fast action packed scenes manage to grip you. But this was just too easy, too quickly resolved, too smooth.
It's so easy for the characters to get from Point A to B. Like a car just waiting there for their escape. Like driving a TANK back to the secret location? That it seemed to be waiting for them. AGAIN? - how conveniently come on.
The abilities were intriguing, I hoped to learn more about them and their origins.

Usually I'm fine not liking a single character in a book and still love it. But when the whole book is so character-focussed and I don't care about them, the rest doesn't give my anything. The insta-love just proved me again that I'm no romance reader. Rolling eyes. I read the Legend series this year as well and though there also was the insta-love aspect the world and action scenes were palpable.

Talking about characters. I don't get the Warner obsession, even though I like morally grey characters.
"I never would've kissed you if I didn't think you wanted me to." duh. Him calling Juliette "love" from the start or "my dear girl"? Delusional that guy. "There was something about you that felt different to me." Not. Again. Generally Unravel me overused the word different.
Ignite me transformed Aaron almost into a saint through explanations and justification of his previous actions. "He's just ... so different." No. Just no. I would've preferred him being the evil guy enjoying to kill people, not this watered down version to fit the romance and Juliette falling for him.

And Juliette? After experiencing trauma, abuse and trust issues, I wouldn't have expected her to jump head first into relationships. Of course after isolation she is also craving human touch and contact but just going for kindness? Have to agree with Aaron for once. But trusting the guys. Letting them have so much control over her life. Urgh. You want freedom right? Stand up for yourself girl without any of those two guys. I was cheering her on when she shot Aaron.
Don't even care enough about Adam to talk about him.

The description of Juliette's emotions are just too much. The reader spends the majority of his time in her head. Although her thoughts and the way she was trying to cope with everything was understandable at times, at the length of three novels she was just annoying. But I still liked her character's growth.
Kenji is the only good thing about these books. He is always on point especially about "all that emotional shit".

Suffice it to say that I won't continue the series. For now as I can't seem to leave any series unfinished.

1- shatter me اعطيها (4/5)
2- unravel me (5/5)
3- Ignite me (4.5/5)

My overall thoughts on this Shatter Me Complete Collection:
I'm so glad I bought this and not the books separately. I probably wouldn't have continued in this series after book 1. The series got better from book to book and I will definitely continue with the rest of the books in this world.

Thoughts on the particular books:

Shatter Me
Not sure about this one. Beginning was very slow, then it felt rushed... guess I'll have to continue to read and see.
3/5

Destroy Me
I kind of like Warner. He's weird, seems to have a gift too and super obsessed with Juliette. It was good to get inside his mind a bit.
3/5

Unravel Me
I really liked the twist. Kenji is such a fun character. I still don't like Adam. First time in the series I want to immediately continue with the next book.
4/5

Fracture Me
I don't like Adam. So even though this was short - and sets up the next book nicely - it was still Adam whining. Have I mentioned that I don't like Adam?
3/5

Ignite Me
I loved this book. It was so good and I read through it so quickly. These characters really grew on me. Warner, Kenji, Juliette. Only Adam can go. Who needs him?
5/5

I loved this series the writing is literally insane there are moments where being inside the main characters head is just crazy and then there are those moments that you legit have to read over and over again its like I said insane!! I'll never get over Tahereh's usage of the word ignite and forever more when I hear that word I will think of this series!! I don't have much else to say there's two things that make this series so incredible one the writing and two Warner you can read this for either one and be happy!! I know some hated the writing its different and that's why I loved it so much!! I can't wait to treat the new books though I'm taking a break cause I'm not ready to read about these characters struggling even more after everything that went down!!! But make no mistake I will most definitely be reading the other two and anything else she writes because she's bad ass!!!!

Amo a Adam, omgggg😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

Shatter me: 4/5 💫

"This girl is destroying me. A girl who has spent the last year in an insane asylum. A girl who would try to shoot me dead for kissing her. A girl who ran off with another man just to get away from me. Of course this is the girl I would fall for." Like HELLOOO?🤣😭 Lo amo.

"I've wanted few things in this life. I've asked for nothing from no one. And now, all I'm asking for is another chance. An opportunity to see her again." AYYYY cositaaaa😭😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽

"I almost forget that she still hates me, despite how hard I've fallen for her. And I've fallen. So hard. I've hit the ground. Gone right through it. Never in my life have I felt this. Nothing like this." 😭😭😭😭😭😭

"She is scared and broken, yes. But she is also angry-and stunningly beautiful. I'm certain I've never seen such beautiful creature in my life."

Destroy me: 4/5 💫

"I cannot be with him. I will not be with him. I won't risk hurting him again, won't risk becom- ing the creature he's always afraid of, too scared to touch, to kiss, to hold. I don't want to keep him from having a normal life with someone who isn't going to accidentally kill him all the time." 😭😭😭 ay chiquitaaaa

"Still, I see no appeal in the life he's offered. I see no future in it. I take no pleasure in it. Still, I tell myself, despite everything, I know that I do not want to hurt people. It's not something I crave And even if the world hates me, even if they never stop hating me, I will never avenge myself on an innocent person. If I die, if I am killed, if I am mur dered in my sleep, I will at least die with a shred of dignity. A piece of humanity that is still entirely mine, entirely under my control. And I will not allow anyone to take that from me." La amo.🥺

"Warner is beautiful in ways even Adam isn't." 😦🤣🤣🤣 GIIIIRRLLL🤣🤣🤣

Aaron has dimples. Repito: *Aaron Warner has dimples* 😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

YO SABIA QUE KENJI PODRIA HACER INVISIBLE A OTROS, LO SABIAAAA

"There's never going to be anyone else. I'm never going to want anyone else." ADAAAAAM😭😭😭😭

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHA😭😭 Kenji es el diablo😭🤣🤣 "I mean, that last line? 'I wish I could love you less?' That was genius."🤣🤣

"Because all you ever said to me," he explains, "was that you didn't want to hurt anyone. You didn't want to murder people." "I don't." "Except for me?" AAAAAAAAAH😆😆😆😆😆

"Don't go," he whispers, eyes on my notebook again. "Please," he says. "Sit with me. Stay with me. I just want to see you. You don't even have to say anything." ES QUE LO AMOOOO😭😭😭😭

"I miss you. I miss you so much is killing me." 😭😭😭ay Adam...

"No," he says, shaking his head. "I refuse to be- lieve that this is the end of us. Not if you still love me. Because you're going to get through this," he says, "and I will be waiting for you when you're ready. I'm not going anywhere. There won't be an- other person for me. You're the only one I've ever wanted and that's never," he says, "that's never going to change." 😭😭😭😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽 ADAAAAAAAM.

JAMES TIENE PODERES CURATIVOOOOOS😭😭😭😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽 OMGGGGG; Y amo a Kenji con mi vida🤣🫶🏽

"My life has been nothing but bat- tle and destruction. Being here?" He looks around. "Away from duties, responsibilities. Death," he says, eyes intent on the wall. "It's like a vacation. I don't have to think all the time. I don't have to do anything or talk to anyone or be anywhere. I've never had so many hours to simply sleep," he says, smiling. "It's actually kind of luxurious. I think I'd like to get held hostage more often," he adds, mostly to himself. 😭😭😭 Ay chiquitooooooo

"I love it when you say my name," he says. "I don't even know why." "Warner isn't your name," I point out. "Your name is Aaron." His smile is wide, so wide. "God, I love that." "Your name?" "Only when you say it." "Aaron? Or Warner?" His eyes close. He tilts his head back against the wall. Dimples. 😭😭😭😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

"You're going to go on to do incredible things," he says. "I've always known that. I think I just wanted to be a part of it."😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

Warner tiene poderes🙂‍↕️

"Is it even possible," he whispers, "that you can't feel this fire between us?" 🥺😆😆😆😆 Yo si.

"You-you said you wanted f-friendship-"
"Yes," he says, he swallows, "I did. I do. I do want to be your friend." He nods and I register the slight movement in the air between us. "I want to be the friend you fall hopelessly in love with." 😭😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

"I want to know where to touch you," he says. "I want to know how to touch you. I want to know how to convince you to design a smile just for me." I feel his chest rising, falling, up and down and up and down and "Yes," he says. "I do want to be your friend." He says "I want to be your best friend the entire world." 😆😆😆😆😆 y qué clase amigos son esooooos????

"Please." He says "Please don't shoot me for this." And he kisses me. 🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽😆😆😆😆😆😆 I'm deaaaaadddd.
He says, "Juliette." I close my eyes. He says, "I don't want you to call me Warner anymore." I open my eyes. "I want you to know me," he says, breathless, his fingers pushing a stray strand of hair away from my face. "I don't want to be Warner with you," he says. "I want it to be different now. I want you to call me Aaron." 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😭😭😭😭😭

Aaron is such a sweetheart😭 pero todavía amo a Adam.
Unravel me: 5/5💫

Omg, James is sooo cuterr🫶🏽🫶🏽

Si algo le pasa a James, me voy a quillar coñazoooo😡

Kenji grins. "Okay then. Let's go get our girl back." "My girl," I correct him. "She's my girl." Kenji snorts as we head in the direction of the compounds. "Right. Minus the part where she's not actually your girl. Not anymore." "Shut up." "Uh-huh." "Whatever."

"I love Juliette. I really do. I want to help her and support her and be there for her. I want us to have a future together. But sometimes I wonder if it's ever going to happen. This isn't easy to admit, but part of me doesn't want to put James at risk again-on the run again -for a girl who broke up with me. A girl who us. walked away from I don't know what the right thing is anymore. I don't know if my allegiance is to James or Juliette." I mean.. i can't blame him🤷‍♀️ O sea, yo que amo a mi pequeña estaría igual o peor.

Fracture me: 5/5💫

"I thought I could walk away the last time," he says. "I thought I could let you go and hate you for it but I can't. Because you make it so damn diffi- cult," he says. "Because you don't play fair. You go and do something like get yourself shot," he says, "and you ruin me in the process."🥺

"Don't do that," he says. "Don't ask me questions you already know the an- swers to. Twice I've laid myself bare for you and all it's gotten me was a bullet wound and a broken heart. Don't torture me," he says, meeting my eyes again. "It's a cruel thing to do, even to someone like me." Awww🥺😭

Emm... hellooooo???

Castlee 😭😭😭🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

Todavía amo a Adam.

No shame on it.

"I can't stomach your pain," he says. "I can feel it so strongly and it's making me crazy-please," he says to me. "Don't be sad. Or hurt. Or guilty. You've done nothing wrong." "I'm sorry-" "Don't be sorry, either," he says. "God, the only reason I'm not going to kill Kent for this is because I know it would only upset you more." AAROOOOOOON😆😆😆😆🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

"He was upset," I whisper, "because I didn't agree that you were crazy. And he was accusing me"-I hesitate-"of being in love with you." Warner exhales sharply. Touches a hand to the doorframe. My heart is pounding so hard. Warner's eyes are glued to the wall. "And you told him he was an idiot." Breathe. "No." Warner turns, just halfway. I see his profile, the unsteady rise and fall of his chest. He's staring dir- ectly at the door now, and it's clear it's costing him a great deal of effort to speak. "Then you told him he was crazy. You told him he had to be out of his mind to say something like that." "No." "No," he echoes. ESA ERA TU OPORTUNIDAD LOCAAA😭😭😭😭

'But while I don't know much, I do know that if Adam really loved me, he wouldn't have treated me the way he did today. He wouldn't prefer that I was dead. I know this, because I've seen proof of his op- posite. Because I was dying. And Warner could've let me die. He was angry and hurt and had every reason to be bitter. I'd just ripped his heart out; I'd let him believe something would come of our relationship. I let him confess the depth of his feelings to me; I let him touch me in ways even Adam hadn't. I didn't ask him to stop. Every inch of me was saying yes. And then I took it all back. Because I was scared, and confused, and conflicted. Because of Adam. Warner told me he loved me, and in return I insulted him and lied to him and yelled at him and pushed him away. And when he had the chance to stand back and watch me die, he didn't.' Si.🙂‍↕️

Hahahahahah Kenji es el mejor. Me da mucha risa 10/10🤣

"You don't love him at all?" Warner asks me. My voice is being stupid. "Romantically?" He nods. "No." "You're not attracted to him?" "I'm attracted to you." "I'm serious," he says. "So am I." 😭😭 La tensioooon

Pobre Adam😔 debe ser dificil para él. Pero al final lo hace por James.

"Commandering and shit." "Commandering is not a word." "It has letters, doesn't it? Sounds like a word to me." 🤣🤣🤣 no veo fallas en su lógica.

"This managed to prove is that you are extremely good at turning me off." Adam's jaw clenches. 😦el diablo

QUEEEEEE😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 NOOOOO.

"So," I say to him, rocking on my heels. "I can touch anyone I want now." "Yeah, I know." He laughs, cocking an eyebrow. "Do you know what that means?" "Are you asking me out?" "You know what this means, right?" "Because I'm flattered, really, but I still think we're much better off as friends" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 lo amo

"Lift your hips for me, love" 😦 Em... Aaron? Juliette? QUÉ HACEN EN ESA MESAAAAA??? AAAAAAAAH😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆🫶🏽

Ayyyy los hoyueloooos😭🫶🏽

Son tan lindooooos😭😆😆😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Él se quiere bañar con ellaaaa.

"Is this really happening?" I hear him whisper. "What?" I blink, try to stay awake. "You feel so real," he says. "You sound so real. I want so badly for this to be real." "This is real," I say. "And things are going to get better. Things are going to get so much better. I promise." He takes a tight breath. "The scariest part," he says, so quietly, "is that for the first time in my life, I actually believe that." Ay tan lindooo😔❤️

"Why are you wearing so many clothes?" he whispers. "Mmm?" "I don't like these," he says. He tugs on my pants. I touch my lips to his neck, just barely. It's a feather of a kiss. "Then take them off." La Juliette está que ya no se reconoce ni ella🤣🫶🏽 But i get it. I GET IT🤣🫶🏽

"What are you doing?" I whisper, turning to look at him. He gentles my body back down. "I want you to know," he says, pulling on the zipper holding this suit together, "how much I value your friendship." The seam is coming apart and my skin is now open to the elements; I bite back a shiver. The zipper stops at the base of my spine. "But I'd like you to reconsider my title," Warner says. He drops a soft kiss in the middle of my back. Runs his hands up my skin and pushes the sleeves off my shoulders, leaving kisses against my shoul- der blades, the back of my neck. "Because my friendship," he whispers, "comes with so many more benefits than Kenji could ever offer."😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

Haven't read the 2 novellas but I absolutely adore the Shatter me series with all my heart. Can I just say that Tahereh has super a beautiful writing style. Have you ever just read a sentence and thought "wow that's a pretty sentence" because that's me throughout reading all of her books. Not only is her writing style absolutely astonishing but you can really feel what the main character, Juliette, feels (which is why I love first person point of view). When she's in love, you're in love, when she's confused, you're confused, when she's determined, you're determined. This book was an emotional journey that I loved, and this series is my all time favorite series and I don't think that'll ever change. I could rant on and on about this book but I'm not going to, so just read it.

First I would like to say that I'm writing this review for the whole Shatter Me series, and second that I never EVER write reviews... That being said here's my review of the shatter me series.

Breathtaking, wonderful, stunning.... I could use any of those words to describe this series but they would all be understatement.

Mafi's writing is beyond refreshing and unique. It's something so hard to describe or even put into words, and I know that my review wont do it true justice.

I found myself drowning in her words and not wanting to come up for air. I wanted the waves of her writing to crash over me and pull me further and further out. I'm pretty sure I held my breath the whole time I was reading this series (which might I add I finished in less than two days).

Since finishing this series I have found myself comparing any book I have read or am reading to it. Never has a writer made me fall so in love with characters and made me feel like whatever happened to them was happening to me. Her characters will steal your heart and soul. Juliette will make you feel empowered and brave. Adam will make you remember what love feels like. Warner will show you everything you secretly want and OH BOY WILL YOU WANT IT, and Kenji will be the friend you've always wanted.

I could go on for days... weeks... no years about this book. I would go so into detail and fine tooth comb and break down every chapter if I could, but I wont because I would never want to tarnish, or give out any details to someone who hasn't had the chance to read this masterpiece, because that's what this series is. It's the Mona Lisa of ya novels. A slight mysterious smile that you can't turn away from. It makes you want to scream out loud and kiss Tahereh's forehead and thank her for writing something so on point. so on point.

I could seriously keep going, but I'll spare you the novel of a review I could write and leave you with this.....
You know how you meet someone with such passion for what they do and all you can think is "wow, this person was born to do this" well Tahereh Mafi was meant to be a writer, and I'm SO very thankful that she is! Thanks for the permanent goose bumps, tears, laughs, and never ending book hang over that you have rewarded me with.I am forever in your debt.

This is an excerpt from my review of the whole Shatter Me series. Read the full review here: https://bibliomad.wordpress.com/2015/...

This is not your average book series. This doesn’t even come close to your average book series. Think The Hunger Games but with more metaphors. Think Divergent but with more heart. Even then, even then, you are not even close. This is the Shatter Me series, and words don’t come close to describing how I feel about it. Whenever I think about this series I want to scream. Out of joy, out of frustration, out of typical fangirl tendencies.

I heard about this series through Goodreads, and the reviews pinned it to be so utterly flawless that I had very high hopes. And, overall, I was not disappointed.

Tahereh Mafi writes poetically and lyrically. Her words interlock so perfectly, it’s as if they were destined to be written side by side. This injects a rhythm into her books, which I believe this genre is lacking. Every other sentence is interlaced with a metaphor, and in using this method, Mafi’s ideas and Juliette’s emotions come across much more prominently than if she had used plain words.

Furthermore, Mafi writes in a way that gives you an insight into the mind of this girl – Juliette – who is clearly very crazed due to her time in solidarity. The constant use of repetition, as if Juliette has to repeat herself so as to get through to herself. The crossing out of words, as if Juliette is crossing out thoughts, trying not to think certain things, or simply crossing things out on a page. The long flowing sentences, like Juliette’s never-ending thoughts. The short, powerful sentences, depicting sudden changes in her emotion. It’s this craft that makes this series what it is. Without it, it would not be so highly praised.

The storyline is not pristine. There are many flaws, and many reasons to believe Mafi simply wanted to write a love story, but more on that later.

Overall, this series is magnificent, and truly one of a kind. I look forward to reading more from Mafi in the future, for she is destined to be a big hit in the YA community.

I went into the Shatter Me series very skeptical. I'd heard the strikeouts were annoying and that the writing style was strange and confusing. Well, I absolutely couldn't disagree more! With the Shatter Me series, Mafi cemented herself as an A-list writer on my score sheet.

The strikeouts took a few chapters to get comfortable with in Shatter Me & was a little distracting at first. However, the significance, importance, and absolute relevance of them become so PERFECTLY clear as Juliette's character transitions throughout a strikeout free Ignite Me. They served to show the magnitude of her personal growth, inner strength, & discovered clarity. So, please don't let the strikeouts deter you from this series! They weren't just for show!

I've never been a fan of lyrical'esc writing, that with endless strains of metaphors and descriptions about a leaf or some trivial tidbit that takes up multiple paragraphs. However,
Mafi's writing style flows so freely, with such potency, with such raw unfiltered emotion, and with such soul searching analogies that it's impossible not to get absolutely captivated by every word! I'm in awe of her ability to connect her readers with her characters and their plights.

Shatter Me had me rooting so wholehearted for Adam & Juliette to escape and find solace in each other, and my heart broke a million times over for both of them in Unravel Me. I never, ever thought that I would waiver in my opinion on Adam and Warner, but Ignite Me brought it all into perspective for both Juliette and the readers. Juliette ultimately chooses the right path, for the right reasons and it's beautiful to watch it all come into focus. This is one love triangle that actually has real substance in the story, something I never thought I'd say:/

Btw: Witty Kenji goes down as one of my favorite supporting characters ever!

My one and only complaint is that I want more! "I can't wait to watch them try." Well, hell~ me too, me too, me too!!!! I want Mafi to share! Please! I'm begging!
