5 Geek Meets Alpha Stars!!

I love the Midnight series. Midnight Promises is the fifth book in the series and Metal and Felicity were introduced to us in the last book, Midnight Vengeance.

Felicity Ward is a beautiful Russian computer geek who has lived a very secluded life, without relatives and very few friends. Felicity decides to surprise Lauren the heroine from Midnight Vengeance with a visit. Lauren is the cyber friend she’s never met in person but has formed a strong bond with. However, when Felicity arrives at the airport someone is waiting for her and attempts to abduct her. She escapes, but is severely injured in the process, but Lauren is the only one she can trust. When Felicity finally connects with Lauren she also meets Sean O'Brien aka “Metal”, who becomes her fierce protector.

I loved Sean "Metal"!! His character is sensitive, very protective, but he's still a somewhat dominant alpha. He comes from a family of heroes, but sadly his father and four brothers all perished on 9/11, then his mother died of a broken heart soon after. He joined the Navy, became a SEAL, and found a new family at ASI to fill the void. Metal isn’t as hard as the other heroes in this series, he’s looking for love and he’s found it in Felicity. He’s attracted to her quirky sense of humor, her intelligence, and her loyalty. He and the rest of the team join ranks to protect Felicity and find out who is after her and why, and the women rally around Felicity, which I loved!

 photo PicsArt_1419388000581_zps7f9zvqgn.jpg

The plot was nothing new and as with the whole series the heroine is in jeopardy and the hero comes to the rescue, but what made me really love this book was Felicity. She is an exceptionally intelligent woman, with an off-the-chart IQ, and while she may not be hip about the ways of the world, that’s okay, because she's totally cool and has a fantastic sense of humor!! The things Felicity could do using her prototype laptop was amazing and I totally loved her character!!

All in all, I enjoyed the interesting storyline, and the fact that ALL the characters from the previous books were included and rallied around Felicity. It had everything I come to expect in a Lisa Marie Rice Midnight series book and hopefully we’ll get more of these amazing heroes and heroines in the future.

Story Rating ~ 4.5 Stars
Hero Rating ~ 5 HUGE STARS!
Heroine Rating ~ 5 HUGE STARS!
Action Level ~ 4 Stars
Heat Level ~ 3 Stars
Ending ~ 5 Stars
Overall Rating ~ 5 HUGE STARS!

Midnight Promises sure was an EXCELLENT read for me. The beginning started out with Felicity the heroine of this book being abducted in an airport. This part of the story moved rather fast and grabbed my total attention. I loved reading how Felicity got herself out of this situation, it was REALLY GOOD STUFF!

Felicity barely manages to get to her friend Lauren’s house alive. Lauren, Jacko and Metal all jump into action and get Felicity some off the charts medical attention. Afterwards it’s decided that she will stay with Metal at his place while she recovers and try to find the villain who attacked her.

I LOVED Felicity’s character, simply put, she was BRILLIANT! She was a complete computer nerd that knew how to do just about anything with a computer. This really added SO MUCH to the overall story line.

Metal, SIGH………. He was my favorite character of this read. The way he cared for Felicity throughout this story was the stuff romantic dreams are made from. He was a HUGE man and was good looking in a rough way. I loved the fact that besides his huge size, he was so gentle, kind and caring and very protective.

The sexual tension was very high between Felicity and Metal. I REALLY could feel the attraction these two shared way before they took the final step. All these scenes were written with care, their feelings were explained in great depths leaving me in awe of Lisa Marie Rice’s writing talents.

Once again a lot of the characters from the previous books were front and center in this story too. I loved how they all came together as a team to help protect Felicity and to track down the evil villains.

We were treated to some really good action scenes. These scenes were written with a lot of smarts rolled in and were VERY exciting to read.
The ending was really good and we are treated with an epilogue that gave me a smile and a sigh.

Typical LMR story--which is okay by me. Beautiful smart woman in trouble (lately it seems that it's always a Russian bad guy), dangerous yet sexy alpha male who is instantly smitten, and vows to protect her.

Sean 'Metal' O'Brien...
 photo 5e7d5fd4-92bf-49f5-aa96-f2d050ad316c_zpsb57a6202.jpg

Felicity...
 photo 2b261dbc-b2b5-4d12-bf1c-1b5b00acc6a8_zps1cb26f50.jpg

LMR gives us just enough background on the characters to really connect with them. Felicity, our heroine, is a super smart computer nerd/genius who graduated from MIT. She mostly works freelance, and pretty much keeps to herself at her home in Vermont. A lot of that is due to her upbringing. Her parents (a Nobel prize winning physicist from Russia) defected from Russia (and were presumed dead) with the help of the CIA. But growing up in the US there were always secrets. And Felicity was encouraged to keep herself mostly isolated from others. After her parents (real) tragic death years later, Felicity is alone. But she's made a friend in Lauren (Midnight Vengeance) by providing her with alternate identities while she was on the run. Now that Lauren's safe, Felicity is heading to Portland (unannounced) to visit her. When she meets up with some serious trouble from the bad guys at the Portland airport, by sheer force of will she manages to escape and lands quite literally on Lauren's doorstep, and into the arms of her future: Sean 'Metal' O'Brien.

Sean...what a guy. Not conventionally handsome (another LMR trait), but huge, buff, blond, sexy, and a former Navy SEAL medic. And a pretty sad backstory of his own, but in a different way . Now he works for John (Midnight Man) and Douglas's (Midnight Angel) security company, and the minute he sets eyes on Felicity, something clicks. He must help this beauty, at whatever cost. No one will harm her again, as long as he's around. Could she be what he's been (unknowingly) waiting for his whole life?

Very nice story here, with a suspense element that was easy to follow. I was really impressed by the smarts and courage of this heroine, which made it easy to like her. And Metal? Totally wonderful hero. Kind, considerate, protective, possesive and super sexy. Yeah...:)

If you've been reading this series and enjoy it, you'll be sure to enjoy this one too. It's a bit similar to some of the others, but who cares? I enjoy this series because I know what to expect, and LMR delivers. H/h to root for, some super sexy moments, no TSTL moments, a decent amount of suspense, and a meet up with some of the characters from previous books. What more can you ask for? Maybe another book in the series so we can catch up with Felicity and Metal? 4 1/2 stars

Dear Romantic Suspence lovers!
For those of you that have never before read a book by LMR...
This book will be the beginning of a wonderful addiction/obsession that is every LMR book! So sit back and enjoy the ride...

For those of you that follow every LMR book release like myself...
Summing up the reaction while reading and after having finished this I will...

Another wonderful addition in one of my most favourite romantic suspence series ever!

...and for those of you that believe this is another of "the same" book by this author....

I find that most readers that know what they like from their books choose an author again and again just because they know what they are looking for and they know they will find it in their books....like sipping the greatest malt whiskey, you don't ask why you like it every time you choose it!
(in my case...a LMR hero!)

I like reading about imperfectly looking, scarred, unusually "ugly" possessive protectors (though "ugly" in describing LMR heroes is highly debatable IMO!), modern knights that come to the rescue of 21st century highly intelligent damsels in distress that though they are in need of protection, they can hold their own and SEAL their fate no matter the severity of the danger.

The story of Sean "Metal" O'Brien and Felicity Ward was ANOTHER great couple in the Midnight Series that never disappoints its followers! From the 1st Chapter, the action reached sky levels, along with the reader's interest. (Wo)manhuting, computer geeks, ASI goodies and KGB baddies...
What can I say?

*5 stars and a prayer for more books in this series*

4.5 stars!

I love the "Midnight" series, and was thrilled that LMR continued on with it!

I read this book right after reading Midnight Vengeance where we (the reader) are introduced to Sean "Metal" O'Brien and Felicity Ward (gotta say I love her name. I'm a HUGE fan of "Firefly").

Once again Ms. Rice delivered an action-pacted story with strong,-alpha characters, and amazing sassy, smart, independent women.

The writing, characters, and story-line were once again top-notch.

I really liked seeing Midnight, Doug, Jacko, and Metal 'suit-up' again

(once a SEAL always a SEAL, and they protect what's theirs) in order to get 'shit done', and Felicity out of harms way once and for all.

 photo 9951fd119d057b9ce36343f8595f8897_1.jpg

Felicity is by far my favorite lead female character in this series.
She was smart, brave, sassy, independent, and a nerd (which is one of my favorite characteristics in a female lead), but not oblivious to what was going on around her and what was at stake.

 photo respectthenerd.jpg

I liked Metal, but I'm sad to say that he wasn't my favorite.
I felt that his character should have had a bit more confidence with Felicity, and his feelings towards her.

That being said it was a solid story, and I would definitely recommend it!

Well done, Ms. Rice!

Look forward to reading more books in this series! :-)

3.75, rounded up for a fun read. My guilty pleasure. This smexy suspense story is set in Portland, Oregon (good action scene at the airport and hospital, but I suspended doubt and just went along with it). The heroine, a lonely but brilliant techno-nerd, finally finds her place in the world with an orphaned hero who dresses wounds, bakes five-grain bread, and kicks ass. What's not to like? A former SEAL medic now working for Alpha Security, he's Sean O'Brien, called Metal — but not because of body piercings (which would be gross, IMO). He was injured in the line of duty, shattered bones replaced with titanium.

He's ugly, she's a beauty beyond compare. The author goes on about Felicity's gorgeous blue eyes, golden hair, and unblemished skin, but not nearly as much as she did in other novels. Hoorah for that! Rice likes the beauty-beast trope. We've seen it before, in Midnight Angel, for example. But unlike Douglas, Metal isn't covered in scars. He's just got an ugly mug, since birth. Heartbreaking, but aren't all babies beautiful?

It's insta-luv. He's immediately protective, knowing she's hunted, bleeding out. He's drawn to her kindness, fascinated by her cyber-smarts, and fiercely in lust.

Quite a nice read with witty dialogue and vivid scenes, but beware a handful of typos and the weirdest glitch where "3/4" replaces a few letters. Rice mentions several characters from film and pop culture, but I only recognized a few, so the meaning was lost on me. Haven't seen Minority Report, and who is Smoak? "She'd named herself after Felicity Smoak, Arrow’s super bright friend. So. What would Felicity Smoak do? Steal a car, of course. Borrow a car."

For prequel readers, there are some heartwarming scenes showing the whole security team together, working to take down a rogue from the defunct Russian KGB. Especially Suzanne and John from Midnight Man, and Lauren and Jacko from Midnight Vengeance.

Written in 3rd-person POV through the perspective of heroine, hero, and villain. They engage in too much thinking and/or lovesick mooning, but it's not as bad as some books (I hate needless repetitive thinking).

The plot was decent, and I didn't guess the secret to the nuclear bombs. Rice tweaked my interest in loosened privacy laws and a few technical gadgets. I looked up some of the devices, weapons, and apps she incorporated into the story. Learned something new! Maybe this book should be called "Midnight Apps" (LOL -- the app that she used!!). Rice did her research. And hearing loss would probably occur from that other device, just as she said.

As for the sizzle factor, just right for me. A good balance, where it feels hot but the plot isn't lost in sex. No oceans of "juice" in the bed, no insulting terms for female anatomy. One smexy get-naked scene, at about 45% into the story, and one full-on sex scene, at 70% into the story. The sex is also balanced by a lot of sweet loving moments, like when Metal brought his recuperating houseguest breakfast in bed.

Quibbles: Too much boring thinking and/or lovesick mooning (pet peeve). I didn't like the term "meatspace" -- it offends, and felt out of character. The author didn't coin the term, but she did decide to use it. People aren't meat. I don't think all nerds have pencil dicks, either. Stereotyping. Also, Porland rarely gets snow; if so, only a dusting.

Contents: Sex, some F-bombs, some religious profanity, some violence.

5 for the entertainment factor, 3.5 for the execution=4 solid stars

Midnight promise is a worthy addition to Rice's Midnight series. The story opens right into the action with the heroine getting caught in the airport by a bad guy. Quickly she manages to get free, but not without getting hurt in the process. Metal (ok, I don't like the nickname, I prefer his real name -Sean- way better) is there when she finally stumbles into her friend's Lauren place, and being a medic and a SEAL, he's the obvious choice when looking for someone to take care of her.

I liked the fact that Felicity, though a damsel in distress, is not entirely helpless, but with her IQ and laptop, she managed to stay on top of things. Being isolated from people for most of her life, she's ignorant of how beautiful she is, which makes her all the more likeable and attractive to both Metal and this reader:)

Metal is the usual Rice hero, with the rugged exterior and the heart of gold, and though his face is repeatedly described as 'thuggish looking', his body is the stuff dreams are made of<3 I liked the fact that he's protective of Felicity, but not to the point of cutting her own wings. He's also tender, loving, supportive... simply perfect!

The problem for me was that after the adrenaline-fueled opening, the story seemed to loose its pace, and as a huge part was spent inside Metal's appartment, there was not much action going on. I think a skirmish or two in the middle, would gain this story a 5-stars rating instead of 4. Also, I admit to taking a dislike to the ending, which I do NOT consider completely a HEA because So yeah, I wish the ending was slightly different.

In short, I loved both Metal & Felicity, had a great time reading their story BUT the middle was decidedly action-lacking and sounding awfully close to a broken record(=how ugly but kind Metal is, how smart and beautiful Felicity is) and the ending seemed like a pissing contest, as to who is the baddest ass: KGB or FBI. And this being an American author, it goes without saying that FBI wins hands down.

Looking forward for the next book which hopefully won't indulge in the same hymns to America's prowess (at least not as fervently as this one).

This is the first book in the series that I read and it was okay...not bad but nothing special.
Maybe it had something to do with the hero's name...Metal..really!!!!

I struggled to finish the book...dragged a bit for me.
And also I could engage fully with the characters.

I have read one of this author's books from her other series which I liked but I think I am going to give this series a miss!!!

*face palm*

Going back now to read about Metal's AMAZING TOOL :D

LOVED IT but... I feel a tiny bit cheated since Metal and Felicity never actually "got it on" *STAMPS FOOT IN ANGER* I wanted MORE on Metal's HUGE TOOL

4 Solid Suspense STARS!! ★★★★

Spoiler free review

I must confess, I haven't read any of the books in this series but I have read some of Lisa's other books and I do enjoy her writing style. Always suspenseful and filled with white-hot sexual tension, Rice's stories are winners for entertainment.

This one in particular has it all, Alpha male Hero, super smart innocent Heroine, nuclear weapons and a former Soviet Union Colonel bent on world domination....

It takes a lot of concentration to follow the storyline but once you're emersed in it, you're not disappointed. The interaction between the H/H is equally sweet and sexy and the insta-love connection endears the characters quickly...

All in all, a good value for money read...Definitely one for romantic suspense fans

The second addition to Lisa Marie Rice's Men of Midnight series. Felicity Ward makes an impromptu visit to Portland Oregon to visit her friend Lauren Dare who was the heroine in the previous book in the series Midnight Vengeance . But she is nearly kidnapped and is injured when she escapes. After the kidnapper follows her to the hospital she makes her way to her friend's house where Sean O'Brien aka "Metal" is there to help.

The formula that LMR uses is the same (alpha hero and damsel in distress heroine) but I love it and it works for me. I love this series and love this addition. It was wonderful revisiting the characters from the past and meeting new ones. I highly recommend this series to Romantic Suspense fans who like a little added spice.

This one is so much better than the last book! I didn't hate Jacko's book but I didn't connect with the characters the way I did with this one. Felicity is now one of my favorite female lead characters and Metal is definitely a fave male lead character. I'll be adding a longer review closer to release day. :)

What I love about a LMR romance is that's what I get, and that the H is in from the get go. I love that there is no push and pull, little to no angst, no miscommunication (pet peeve no. 1), suspense, plenty of background info on the characters without bogging the story down, catching up with characters from previous books in the series and lots of hot, sexy scenes.

I got all this in Midnight Promises apart from the hot scenes, that was lacking in this one. I still really enjoyed the read but would have preferred less of Metal's inner monologue and a bit more action.

I love this series. Hot romance, decent suspense and really wonderful main characters. Felicity Ward's parents were Russian defectors and she was raised not to trust anyone. A very lonely upbringing. She takes a trip to Portland, OR and is attacked before she leaves the airport. Ex-SEAL, Sean "Metal" O'Brien, is visiting his friends when Felicity turns up on their doorstep, bloody and near unconscious, only to fall into his arms. Game over for Metal and Felicity, sheltered as she was, feels the same. As a computer expert, Felicity sets out to find who did this and why. It soon becomes apparent that this attack is related to her father's work and someone wants information she has.

Another good romantic suspense by Lisa Marie Rice. The plot was interesting, I loved the protective hero, and the smart heroine was endearing.

This checked all my boxes, except I would have liked a little more story. It was a little too quick to be a 5 star read. That said it was enjoyable, I'm looking forward to continuing this series.

ARC has been graciously provided by the author, which I thank her very much since I am a big fan.

I love the Midnight series. I think Midnight Man (the 1st book in the series) is the reason I totally buy into the ebook crown. I may not be an early ebook adopted if not for the greatness of Midnight Man. That book convinces me that ebook is the same (or much better than) as printed book.

Midnight Promises is the fifth (single title) book in the series. Both Metal and Felicity are the characters in the previous book (Midnight Vengeance) but the readers do not need to read that book except that if your read Midnight Vengeance, you would feel that you HAVE TO read this book.

The theme in this story still is in line with the whole series, the heroine in jeopardy and the hero to the rescue. Felicity Ward is a genius computer nerd who lived alone for all her life. With no relative, and no friend, it is very obvious that she is very lonely. She arrived at Portland Airport with a hope to connect with Lauren, a virtual friend whom she helps to get a new life but never meet before in person. But someone is waiting for her at the airport and try to abduct her. She escape but is hurt in the process. Lauren is the only one she can trust but when Felicity finds Lauren, she also find Metal aka Sean O'Brien and with him she finds her protector.

As mentioned the plot is nothing new but what make me really love this book is the characters especially Felicity. I totally believe in what Ms. Rice describe her to be. An intelligent woman with of-the-chart IQ who may not quite sophisticate about the world. A lot of books fail to convince me to believe the intelligent of a characters but not this one. The trick Felicity used to escape the bad guy at the airport are totally believable and very into her already built-in character that the author described. I may not know much about computer but I think I know enough (to survive) and I believe the story. And I love Felicity as a person. I like the combination of naive and cleverness.

As for the romance, it is Lisa Marie Rice signature. InstantLove. And since I expect it to happen, I am OK with it. Of course I already fall in love with (the character of) Felicity so I do not disappoint that Metal also fall for her. She is the type of person people can feel the love for.

The only "let down" thing I have with this book is the reason why the bad guy hunted Felicity. It may be the fault of

All in all, I love this story. It has everything I expected in a Lisa Marie Rice's story.

This is another great book for Lisa Marie Rice. It is will have you laughing, crying and cheering on the guys at ASI. Metal is the stunning example of an alpha male and Felicity is a beautiful warrior in her own right. An amazing book for everyone and if you haven't read the first four.. This book will make you want to go out and get them or download them to your kindle.
Congrats Lisa Marie Rice on another amazing book for this series. We can't wait for the next one.

Readers who enjoy Rice's style of writing will be all over this book.
It is her tried and true formula of writing that has served her well for this entire series so far.
Woman on the run? Check.
Hot, damaged, scarred hero? Check.
Instalove? Check.
Crazy hot chemistry? Check.
Although, that last one, I have to say was much more subdued than I am used to from Rice. She really made us wait for it in this book! I wasn't aware of it so much while I was reading because I was really into the story and the sexual tension was always simmering, though.
Sean O'Brien, known as "Metal" due to the amount that was used to put his Seal body back together after a horrible injury, is completely floored by the beautiful, injured woman who collapses in his arms while he is visiting his friends and coworkers. Thankfully, as a former medic, he knows exactly what to do to keep her alive and immediately knows that he's going to be the one insuring her safety. 24/7.
Felicity Ward, a computer genius, and woman on the run, has unknowingly made very powerful enemies. Her parents defected from Soviet Russia and took their dangerous secrets with them. Secrets that certain factions would kill to possess. Secrets they are sure Felicity has the key to. Forced to live her entire life on the run, under different names, Felicity has come to the only person she thinks may be able to help her. Lucky for her, and for us, Metal is there as well.
I can't tell you how impressed I was with Felicity. She is exactly the type of female I most like to read in these types of books. Incredibly smart and brave, yet able to maintain some semblance of innocence, she will do whatever it takes to stay alive. The moxie and absolute genius she employs to stay breathing was thrilling and exciting at once.
She and Metal make for a good team. Both appreciative of the other's strengths and at the same time immensely attracted, they carefully navigate the tangled web of secrets that is threatening Felicity.
I very much enjoyed this book and hope there is more to come!

Midnight Promises by Lisa Marie Rice is the 5th book in the Midnight series. This one focuses on Felicity and Metal, (Sean). It starts off with an intense action sequence that captured my interest and had me admiring the heroine, Felicity. She’s tough, super smart, a computer whiz, with a kind heart. She’s lived a bit of a reclusive life but deep down she’s always craved belonging. She was taught from a young age to hide and keep distant from others. In this book we see her open up and become a part of a whole group of people.

I really liked Metal as well. He’s a total badass but a complete teddy bear with Felicity. Their chemistry is smoking hot and their romance happens quickly. I enjoyed reading along as Metal and Felicity came together while working to uncover the plot of her attempted kidnaping. It’s a fast read that slows down of bit around the midway point before picking back up again. It fits within the series and I liked it better than the last book, Midnight Vengeance.

I must admit though, that I’m getting a little bored with reading the same basic formula over and over again. So much so that I stopped reading this book about halfway through and didn’t pick it up again for a couple of weeks. The heroes and the way they view the heroines are essentially the same in every book by Lisa Marie Rice, certainly within this series. It’s a formula that has worked well for her but it gets repetitive after a while when you’ve read all her published works. Fortunately, when I picked it up again I liked it quite a bit more and ended up really enjoying it.

All in all, Midnight Promises is well done. It’s fast paced with action, sex and romance woven together in a way that draws you in. I would recommend it to fans of romantic suspense.

I love Lisa Marie Rice’s books, and the Midnight series is a favourite of mine. Midnight Promises was a great addition and I really enjoyed it.

I don’t know how the author does it, but she writes the most perfect heroes, and I love how she always writes the perfect alpha without the big jerk attitude, and I love how possessive and passionate they are over their women and the sex scenes are always so hot and sexy.

The pacing of this book was fast and gripping from the beginning, and I loved Sean “Metal” and Felicity. Metal is super-hot, and very protective of Felicity and I liked how quickly they fell for each other.

A great book and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good romantic suspense, with a total alpha warrior who is very possessive and protective and a geeky heroine.

It was pretty good, but not the author’s best. Some parts felt slow. Some scenes too drawn out.

But it kept my interest. I like a dose of LM Rice every once in a while - alpha male always turned on by heroine and wanting to do everything and anything for her.

Felicity is a super smart computer hacker who graduated from MIT. Metal is a former SEAL and medic - now working for a private security firm. He’s a great cook. She is used to eating takeout. Bad guy is former Russian KGB who wants information about Felicity’s father.

I received this ebook at the RT convention.

Better than the last book of this series. LMR has a formula, and this is more of the same; but I'm a fangirl, what can I say. My only real complaint was the purple prose section of the book where Sean's dick was referred to as a separate entity and took on a throbbing, pulsing life of its own. That was a bit off-putting for me.

Basically, it's everything you'd expect. Tiny fragile goddess heroine, big sweet kind of ugly hero, vicious foreign villain. Some cameos from previous couples in the Midnight series. Nothing radically new, but if that formula works for you, you'll probably like this one as well.

I received the ARC author of this story after attending the Book Tour Breaking Danger and I was glad to have on hand a chance to read another book by Lisa Marie Rice and my favorite series.
But, when Vania Nunes from The Butterfly Reads blog invited me to join a new Book Tour of Lisa Marie Rice’s, I accepted.

Felicity Ward comes to Portland and intends enjoy of life. For a long time she lived on the run and now sees the chance to enjoy a bit of life. The window-shopping with your purses, skirts, tshirts, fragances and colors to enchant ... but a Russian accent and a knife in your back brings this down. She needs to get away again. But where?

Felicity the only solution is to go to Lauren's house (heroine of the book Midnight Vengeance). There she finds help of her friend, but also of Sean "Metal" O'Brien.

Metal is Jacko partner (hero of the book Midnight Vengeance) and also works on the Alpha Security International (belonging to John – book #1 Midnight Man book and Douglas - book #3 Midnight Angel). Your nickname comes from the fact that after years of being SEAL (and doctor) in his body have more metal than bones.

When a beautiful woman falls into his arms he feels emerge as strong protective instinct he just wants to know to care for her, keep her safe and find out why wanting to kidnap her.

Felicity (which has been Alina Darin and Karyn Valk) is an expert in computers and programs and is part of the witness protection program, his parents (a physical and a biochemical) fled the Soviet Union, but they led to the United States a secret, a powerful nuclear weapon.

Throughout her life she fled the KGB (Russian secret police) and thought the nightmare was over, but she does not know Vladimir Borodin (former KGB colonel and now a major industrial) has other plans and it needs to find it.

While trying to find out who is wanting to kidnap, her Felicity and Metal are discovering. The two have difficult family stories, Metal lost his father and four brothers (on September 11, 2001) and his mother shortly afterwards, add to that the SEAL of life to know that he hasn’t the best view of the world. But the involvement is inevitable and the two give in to this feeling.

Lisa Marie Rice brings us (again) a great story, with decent action scenes of any successful, in addition to sexy passages between the main characters. The supporting cast also have their time, John (sighs), Douglas, Bud, Jacko, and Suzanne, Allegra, Clarie and, of course, Lauren has major holdings in history.

I just thought the scene where they discover, and consequently, the encounter with the villain and its outcome, very fast.

Again I point out (as I did in the review of Breaking Danger) is a pity that Lisa Marie Rice is not published in Brazil. Those who read only in Portuguese is losing the chance to meet a great author.

4.5 stars

There was violence afoot from the start in this erotic novel of a young, beautiful techno-geek unwittingly on the run from the silent, frozen past of her parent’s Russia. Former KGB Colonel turned industrialist Vladimir Borodin received a fragment of information from a long-ago planted Operation Yankee mole about a little remembered “dead” Nobel Prize winner in Physics–Nikolai Darin. Which led Borodin to research a trail of deceit that began with a faked death, a hidden defection, an unexpected child, and a $60,000 pot at the end of the rainbow. But unearthing the secret left planted in the mind of a child might be impossible for even an experienced KGB officer…or a man in love. Even to save her life.

Felicity Ward is a lovely girl who has always grown up knowing how to hide and how to keep secrets. The child of Russian defectors, brought up in the witness protection program, she’s never gotten to have or keep a name of her own. Felicity was the name she’d chosen when her parents were killed in an automobile accident in her late teens and she left the witness protection program. She rarely traveled or left home, and she did most of her work online. It’s amazing to me that she even took the trip to see her friend Lauren.

Because of her circumstances, Felicity has had to become a survivor and a quick judge of character. When she is accosted at the airport by Borodin’s accomplice, she’s still able to make her escape from him there and then at the hospital; think quickly enough to avoid her hotel; and go to the one place that she trusts she’ll be safe–Lauren’s house. She’s immediately confronted at the door by Lauren, her boyfriend Jacko, and then falls/faints into the arms of Sean “Metal” O’Brien, Jacko’s co-worker. Luckily for her, she’s fallen into the exact right spot. Because Sean’s not only a medic–he’s a man who’s been hit over the head with a powerful attraction and a strong desire to protect. Her. He’s not letting her go. She’s a wounded comrade at arms and he’s going to save her. He treats her at the house and takes her to a safe, off-the-grid hospital where she’s stitched up and given antibiotics and pain medications. And he stays by her side the entire time and insists that she return with him to his place so that he can watch over her. He becomes her personal protector, and when she feels him holding her hand in her sleep, she swears it helps her heal.

Sean is an interesting character that tugs at the heartstrings emotionally while also appealing physically as a dominant alpha male. Coming from a family of first responders, he watched his father and four brothers all perish at 9/11, and his mother died of a broken heart soon after. Orphaned by tragedy, he joined the Navy SEALS and found another family–one that helped him serve vengeance on those that had taken his first one. Earning the nickname Metal because of the parts replaced in his body due to various injuries, he doesn’t seem as hardened as the other characters in the series. He’s looking to find softness and love again, and he’s found it in Felicity and her quirky intelligence, her ability to take on the world alone, and her need to find someone to love too.

I like the way that the characters–Sean and Felicity–are allowed such intimacy through touching because of her injury and his being her caretaker. I think that both are naturally loners and wouldn’t necessarily have reached out to one another as quickly as they did if she hadn’t been attacked and needed his help. For both of them–bereft and abandoned of all family–touch was so healing, important, and pivotal in growing their relationship. And it was such a gentle way for their intimacy to evolve. It started as healing and became sensuous and then passionate.

I really loved this book. It was tightly written, cohesive, and carried through on all the things that I wanted to know about the characters, the story, and the outcome. The sex scenes were delicious, the intimacy between the lovers extraordinary, and the heroine was kick-ass amazing in her cyber-brilliance. I loved her chutzpah and the fact that Sean’s alpha manliness didn’t feel the need ever to overpower her. Job extremely well done, Ms Rice!

Midnight Promises is the 5th book in the Midnight series by Lisa Marie Rice. I got hooked onto Lisa Marie Rice ages ago when I first stumbled upon her Dangerous series. Lisa has a penchant for creating heroes that are as tough as they come. Demanding in the bedroom, gentle with their lady outside of it and lethal in the art of fighting and willing to lay their last breathe for the women they love. Ah! Those are the books that still linger afresh on my mind because the impact a good novel can have on you is imprinted in the deep recesses of your mind forever.

The 5th book in the Midnight series features a heroine in danger from the Russian KGB, for the secrets that she unknowingly holds in her hands. Felicity grows up in a household where her father had always looked sad, fear of being captured or worse always making him look over his shoulder. Her mother hadn’t fared any better under the life they’d been forced to live and Felicity had borne the brunt of it all.

Her trip to Portland had been a test of sorts, to see whether she could lead a normal life. A bit of a recluse and a genius in computer coding, Felicity is taken unawares when she is attacked in the airport itself. Her ingenuity and quick thinking saves her life and she lands on the doorstep of her friend Lauren, where Sean “Metal” O’Brien takes charge of her well-being and her heart in the process.

Midnight Promises for me held echoes of the Lisa Marie Rice that moved me to sigh over her books and squirm over the rough and oh so sensuous sex scenes she writes so wonderfully. Sean is the hero who has battle scars all over his body to prove that he is a toughie all around. Felicity, while she might’ve had to lead a reclusive life, is classy and beautiful with a heart that wants to trust that there just might be a person out there capable of keeping her safe from harm. And yet I found myself wanting more from both of them.

Though Midnight Promises had potential to be something more, it fell a wee bit short of hitting the mark. Sean and Felicity were likable enough, I just wasn’t able to connect with the rest of the story as much. Some parts of it dragged a bit, and I missed out on how Lisa tends to forge a connection between the hero and heroine in her previous books that makes it feel like they are in a world of their own, a cocoon of their own making where they are the only ones that exists. But I still would like to say that even with the lack of that, the scene in which Sean makes Felicity his was superbly done; Lisa has a penchant for making the dirty variety of sex sound beautiful and poetic.

Recommended for fans of the series and fans of Lisa Marie Rice. I might be of the very few who found that the story could have been much much better.

Rating = 3.5/5
