The book encompasses five five different heart touching stories with simple narration to bring an awareness about the misconception about kidney (referred as Second Heart) issues among general public. These are partly based on true stories about individual experiences. The book attempts on non-technical handling of a technical issue through emotional stories.
This book includes a collection of five fiction, heart touching stories of which the fifth one (Shalom) is my favourite. Whats really mesmerising is the simple yet effective narration. Also the section ' Doctor's Diary' at the end of each story gives us some crucial information about kidney disorders. The book gives us what it promises - "non technical handling of a technical issue through emotional stories" Kudos to Dr. Sandeep Huilgol for giving such important advices to the audience and Santosh Avvannavar for moulding these advices into 5 masterpieces.
There are several awareness campaigns towards heart-health often posted through social media. But how many times do we hear such health campaigns about kidneys? How many of us are aware of kidney related disorders? Will you believe that kidneys are considered to be second hearts?
Author Santosh joins hands with Dr. Sandeep Huilgol in his book Second heart, to educate the readers about simple must-know information on kidneys through five short stories. Each of the stories talk of a unique tale where one of the characters suffers a kidney disorder.
What stands out about the stories is the kidney related information are not forced on to the readers like how a book on medicine would do. Instead, they are subtly written, mostly falling behind the main scenes, though it forms the central theme of the book.
'Second Heart' is an anthology of five stories about kidney diseases and the misconceptions associated with them. Great job by the authors in narrating their experiences through these stories!
Let me start the review with an apology note to the author who was kind enough to send me a copy in exchange of a review.
Second Heart is an anthology of five fictional stories that deals with various misconceptions that surrounds Kidney also known as Second Heart.
We don't focus much of Kidneys as much as we do for other vital organs such as heart or brain. As of 2013 17% of urban Indians have kidney disease ( the numbers might have drastically increased), out of which 6% had stage III, which needs medical attention such as dialysis or transplant. The shocking finding is that most of them were not aware of it till reached a chronic stage or have undergone any kidney fuction test (Source: Times of India)
The book provides an insight of the fuction of Kidneys, the reasons/symptoms of diseases and also on pros and cons of dialysis and transplant. The language is simple without much of medical jargons which helps even the lay man to understand.
As always the writings are backed up with data to emphasise the importance of the subject. Doctor's dairy- a note at the end of each story gives a glimpse of observation of doctors and few do's and don'ts.
Do give it a read if you want to be aware of your Second Heart.
Second Heart is not about organ donation or claiming myths about second-hand heart. It talks about the pair of kidneys in every human being that too help in regulating blood and its flow. Therefore, kidneys are termed as our second heart. This book is a compilation of five short stories that tell you why it is important to take care of your kidney’s health too.
Unforgotten Love, Love That Returned and Faith is a story of a doctor, who ignored his own health and lost his kidney functionalities. Hope tells us about various ways in which kidney can fail. Love, War and Faith reminds you not to ignore any illness symptoms. God, Freewill and Lucifer: Battle Ground shows what happens if you take your body for granted and abuse it. Shalom is about a girl who is thrown into human trafficking. All the stories have a situation that lead to kidney failure except Shalom. This last story is an odd-man-out in this compilation and you will feel like it has been forcibly stuffed here in this book. There is moral in every story. A good one time read.
The stories are woven around characters who suffer from some kind of kidney ailment. Each story ends with a doctor's note advising the reader about the kidney problems. The book is written and published primarily as a creative way to generate awareness about the importance of kidneys and the issues concerned with kidney ailments...Read full review at NatashazWords
