Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case

Rate this book
In this delightfully witty historical rom-com, a scandalous mystery and an opposites-attract romance combine—perfect for fans Enola Holmes and Bridgerton !

Georgina Harrington should never have trusted her feckless cousin Percy with her most precious archaeological discovery. But no one would take her academic work seriously if they knew it was hers and not her male cousin’s. When Percy goes missing, only Georgina realizes that he is truly in danger. To find him, she must rely on the help of his infuriating but incredibly handsome best friend.

Although Alexander Lovett is always up for an adventure, he vows to keep his distance from Georgina, who is on his insufferable parents’ list of suitable brides for a future duke. He’s a grown man who can pick his own wife, thank you very much. But he’s surprised to find himself falling for Georgina’s shockingly bold initiative and independent thinking, which saves them from more than one deadly scrape.

Yet as a simple kidnapping grows into a threat to the monarchy, their smoldering attraction might be snuffed out before it has a chance to ignite.

Two-time Golden Heart finalist Violet Marsh is a lawyer who decided it was more fun to write witty banter than contractual terms. A romance enthusiast, she relishes the transformative power of love, especially when a seeming mismatch becomes the perfect pairing.

Marsh also enjoys visiting the past--whether strolling through a castle's ruins, wandering around a stately manor, or researching her family genealogy online (where she discovered at least one alleged pirate, a female tavern owner, and several blacksmiths). She indulges in her love of history by writing period pieces filled with independent-minded women and men smart enough to fall for them.

Marsh lives at home with Prince Handy (a guy who can fix things is definitely sexier than a mere charmer), a whirlwind (her toddler), and a suburban nesting dog (whose cuteness Marsh shamelessly uses to promote her books).

One Liner: Entertaining with some important themes

1750s

Georgina Harrington loves archeology and history, but her gender prevents her talents from being acknowledged. She uses her Cousin Percy’s name to submit her works and sell the antiques. Percy is happy with the deal. However, he disappears with her latest find, a possibly high-valued helmet. Georgina realizes he might have been kidnapped or is in danger.

Alexander Lovett is always ready for an adventure and prefers to live a happy life due to his traumatic childhood. His father’s desire to fix his clubfoot and the bullies of the ton made him determined to live his life the way he wanted. Alexander is more than ready to help Georgina find Percy (who happens to be his best friend). However, he has to keep his distance from her as she is on his father’s list of chosen brides for him, and the last thing Alexander wants is to do what his father wants.

The story comes in the third-person POVs of Georgina and Alexander.

My Thoughts:

While the book works as a standalone, it would be more enjoyable if you read the previous one (Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man) since the characters from that one appear quite a bit here. Also, we meet the MMC in the first book and can understand him better.

The story starts a few hours before the previous book ends, but comes from the MMC’s perspective. While I forget most details, I remember Pan the parrot and Banshee the monkey. Here, we have two more additions – a dog and a chicken. It’s a riot with the animals taking over and well doing what they like!

The MMC has a clubfoot (that has been further damaged in ‘repair attempts’). The book presents how physical disability was viewed with disdain and repulsion, especially in the ton where one is supposed to be perfect (only the mask, of course). His childhood trauma, the toxic relationship with his parents, and the coping mechanisms are handled well but without overwhelming.

The FMC is an archeologist and a historian trying hard to retain control over her life and finances. We get to see the patriarchy, gender bias, and other issues associated with the theme. She is a bit gruff and quick to judge at times, but it can be forgiven. It fits with her backstory.

Despite the heavy themes, the book is a romance, so there are quite a few scenes of it. Though I was surprised that the steam is less than 2. It’s not as steamy as I thought it would be. Not complaining!

There’s a mystery element too, which does get decent focus. However, the subplot doesn’t as such take itself seriously, so readers shouldn’t either. It expands into something a bit dangerous but farcical as well.

The book ends with a happy epilogue and a lead for the next one. I’ll be sure to grab that too!
To summarize, Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case is a lighthearted romance with a touch of mystery, but it deals with heavy topics like disability and gender discrimination.

Thank you, NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing), for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case by Violet Marsh
Second book in the series, after Lady Charlotte Gets Her Man. Historical mystery and romantic comedy. Diversity in physical form. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Georgina Harrington is an archaeologist. As a woman, she’s forced to use her cousin’s name for her antiquity appraisal business. When he disappears with a valuable discovery, she turns to a friend of his, Alexander Lovett, to help find her cousin.
The future Duke of Falcondale doesn’t want to spend time with Georgina. His manipulative and cruel parents have chosen her as a potential future bride. For most arguments, he would just grin like a fool and move on. But the lovely Georgina needs his help. Together they go on an adventure to find her cousin and the missing artifact. The investigation goes deeper than either of them imagined.

🎧 I alternated between an ebook and an audiobook for this story. The narration is performed by Marisa Calin in a delightfully soft British accent. Her performance brings a lightness of adventure to the reading which made the romance and comedy come alive.
I slowed my playback just a bit to 1.5 to accommodate the accent until I was used to it.

I appreciated the less than perfect Alexander for his uniqueness and acceptance of science to explain his birth defect. I felt bad for everything that his father put him through (off page, in the past) to try to fix it, and admired his ability to live life to the fullest as best he could.
As usual, also upset by the lack of power or legal options for women. Sigh. Can’t change the past.

Loved the rooster craze! Hilarious.

I was gifted a copy of this from NetGalley and publisher Hachette Audio.

My first experience with this author was mixed. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. I had a decidedly less enjoyable experience with this one even thought there were some good elements to it. The story is a slow-burn romance, filled with intrigue, humor, and lively banter, but some characters, particularly the heroine’s half-brother, the hero's parents and the villains, were, well villains. Miss H. is in the middle of a dastardly plot hatched by her half-brother. I could have done with less pearl clutching and wished for more romance. The mystery got lost in the histrionics and absurd chicken humor. The narration by Marisa Calin was a tad over the top with the angst element at times.

Georgina Harrington only wants to dig for antiquities and write articles, which her cousin has to claim as his own as he is a man. She is quite happy on the shelf until her half-brother decides to marry her off. Then there is the disappearance of her cousin, Percy (her beard). As it turns out Georgina's intended is Percy's best friend Alexander who is heir to a dukedom. His parents are anxious to marry him off too (he has a disability). Georgina and Alexander join forces to find Percy and their search unearths some nasty goings on in the neighborhood.

My thanks to the Publisher and the Author for providing a complimentary audio Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

I requested an early copy of this book based on the description (and let's be real, that cover is charming), but I quickly realized that it's a sequel! This book stands alone, but it takes us back to the world of Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man, a book I loved. It was wonderful to revisit this cast of characters. What makes this book especially interesting to me, a historical romance fan, is that it's set in the 1700s. We get talk of politics, hair, makeup, and fashion from that era (as opposed to the more popular regency era).

This story moves on to a new couple, Georgina and Alexander. Georgiana has suffered through a few social seasons and is content to spend her days excavating land she inherited. Her father, now passed away, raised her to love antiquities. She has written articles and uncovered artifacts, but shares them with the world using her cousin Percy's name. Percy even gives speeches as her when in London. As far as the world knows, he's the antiquarian.

Alexander is the brother of the main female character from the first book. He was born with a clubbed foot and suffered through brutal treatments as a child, as his father was desperate to "fix" him. When he went away to school, he was bullied relentlessly and learned to adopt a happy, unaffected attitude.

The humor and whimsey I remember from the first book is back and some action happens at the coffeehouse that serves as a meeting point for characters. You'd think that the presents of a parrot and monkey would take this into farce territory, but there are so many other topics that keep this from being silly - smuggling, the role of women in society, disabilities, and the obsession with linage in English society at the time are all dealt with. The love story is sweet and a little steamy at times (maybe three peppers?).

Thank you to Forever Publishing for the review copy!

I love this campy cozy mystery historical romance series. I would personally start with the first book, Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man, because they pretty frequently reference characters from that book and it’s a tight knit crew. But I hate feeling dropped into a world, so you might be fine because the mysteries are not connected!

Georgina Harrington is an archaeologist and historian who publishes under her cousin’s name for propriety’s sake. After Percy visits her dig site with some friends, he mysteriously disappears, but Georgina is the only one who believes he’s in danger. She teams up with his friend Alexander Lovett, who her brother is trying to arrange for her to marry, to try to find Percy.

This was the perfect balance of romance, mystery, and jokes for me. I love the silly animal companions that have been in each book! I was absolutely giggling and kicking my feet at the budding romance between Georgina and Alexander. If you are looking for something lighthearted, cozy, and low spice, pick this one up!

Absurd and witty Regency romp!

What a perfect pair Georgina Harrington and Alexander Lovett are. Although they don’t know it of course
They first meet when Georgie’s cousin Percy, Lord Pendergrast brings Alexander to her pit site. An avid antiquarian / archaeologist, Georgina has a dig at a mound on a strip of land in Essex she’d inherited from her father, himself a famed antiquarian. Think cliffs and smugglers. Georgina has found a gold helmet. Percy pretends to have found her artefacts and presents them to the Antiquarians of England Society.
Unfortunately that’s the last Georgina sees of Percy before she’s bundled off to London by her wicked step brother in a plot to marry her off to someone.
In London Georgina looks everywhere for Percy but no-one’s seen him. She’s worried and turns to Alexander for help. That’s when Georgina discovers her people! Her group! They’re wonderful, quirky and supportive.
There’s plots within plots, both hilarious and dangerous. Never more so than for Alexander who’s sworn he’ll never marry, but has started to have feelings for Georgina. He’s actually the Marquess of Heathford, heir to a dukedom. Little do they both know that Georgina is the woman his father and Georgina’s brother are angling for him to wed. Oops!
Some surprising twists before the whole is revealed makes this a humorous and delightful read! I especially loved the way they influence Society into believing roosters are a fashion statement!

A Forever ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

The first book I’ve read by the author & it won’t be the last. I also requested the audiobook so half read & half listened to the book. I enjoyed the book, the characters were well portrayed & had depth. I liked both Alexander & Georgina & there was chemistry between them. There was a parrot & a monkey who lightened the book but just enough for it not to dissolve into farce. I really enjoyed the audiobook, the narrator was accomplished & her use of voices raised my enjoyment
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

Big Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the Advanced Copy!!

'Our Dear Miss H. is on the Case' is a historical, whimsical romance with an academic side story and a short of mystery to be solved by the characters as the prompt storyline.

The plot overall is pretty cute, with the characters being adorable and endearing and having chemistry between them that was aided by the melodrama of their love story. The latter was enjoyable and kind of steamy but never reached a 'boiling point', something that made me question why those scenes were there in the first place. Still, the romance was served feels, so that's that.

Also, the mystery was engaging for some time, though it took the passenger's seat midway through, as the book focused more on the romance.

However, the academic aspect, with the archeological excavations and the love for historical artifacts that Georgiana had, were refreshing to read and an innovative idea for a historical romance of this kind.

Finally, the production of the audiobook was perfect and the narrator did an amazing job!

This witty romcom mystery is a rollicing adventure. Set in the eighteenth century, Violet Marsh has created a comedy of manners that combines romance and wit with comment on societal expectations of the time. While most of the characters in this novel are one dimensional, the main characters are delightful and complex. Georgina Harrington is an archivist at heart. Nothing interests her more than continuing her father's work, unearthing treasures on her inherited land. But as a woman, she has gone from the "care" of her father to that of her half brother, who has a tight control on her estate. She is frustrated by her inability to live on her own lands, let alone control her own funds. Women scholars are not taken seriously, and so she must rely on her male cousin to present her work as his own. When Percy goes missing, she must search for him but needs to rely on the help of his exasperating but attractive best friend. Alexander is the more complex character. Marsh weaves in the society's expectation of the perfect male heir with Alexander's physical deformity. Alexander deals with his physical disability with style, becoming a sportsman despite his reliance on a cane. He must overcome not just physical pain, but hide the rejection and abuse from his father that ensued. Over the course of their search, the two become more and more attracted to each other. But this is a sweet love story with just a little spice. There are a few compromising situations and racy ideas, but nothing explicit. The mystery to find Percy becomes an adventure fraught with peril. The story is complete with disguises, carriage chases, gun play and dungeons. What starts as a mystery, soon becomes melodrama. But it is told with such wit and whimsey that readers will giggle through the whole story.

I alternated between text and audiobook advanced copies that I received from the publisher through NetGalley. The audiobook, narrated by Marisa Calin, is charming. She is a delightful actress, whether she is voicing, women, men or even roosters. This is one novel that is even "better as an audiobook."

readers will want to know that although the book wasn't labeled as part of a series, it is actually a sequel to last year's Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man. There are references to a few past events that made it obvious that this was a continuation. But as is the case in many series of this nature, this is a seperate love story which happens to have some of the same characters. The book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, but I loved this one so much that I plan to read the first book some time too.

ARC READ

Rating: 3.75 stars

If you like Bridgerton and mysteries, you will definitely enjoy this book. The regency era vibes were so cozy and fun. I loved both the FMC and MMC and how they came together.

Also as someone who went to school for history/museum studies, I loved the "archeological" side of this book and our FMC's passion for studies even against the social norms 😊

The book was on the "goofier" side which was fun for the most part. My only issue I had with it was the amount of filler that seemed to be added because of this. This may also just be something I'm not as used to, but I thought there were scenes that felt a bit unnecessary to the story.

Other than that though I enjoyed myself and would recommend to any friends looking for a fun, light read. It was a perfect read for spring.

As far as the audiobook portion goes, I think the narrator did a lovely job. The pacing was good and she kept me engaged the whole time. It wasn't revolutionarily done where I would insist my friends to listen to the audio over physically reading the book, but it was still well done and I would recommend either reading format.

A very cute, fairly fast-paced read, Our Dear Miss H Is On The Case follows a side character from Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man and keeps up the fun energy with two new romantic leads! This was great on audio! I thought the story and the character growth (particularly for our lead, Georgina Harrington) was really sweet as she comes into her own with archeology and discoveries.

If you want something lighthearted with a bit of mystery and intrigue (Georgina's cousin and confidant, Percy, is missing!), with a sweet, somewhat slow burn romance, then you should give this one a go! Though it is somewhat a second book, it works just fine as a standalone!

This was a fun book. There were a LOT of characters though and I wish I had read the first book to give me a primer on who they all were. There were definitely some laugh out loud moments, such as the rooster trend and the dog’s love of turnips, but the monkey and parrot were a little too much for me.

Also, I didn’t really get the sense of the time period (Georgian period) especially based on how the women dressed.

A very fun, cute book! This is a sequel to Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man, and I think the sequel is stronger than the first book in the series. I really loved our main characters, and as usual, the side characters were a delight. The animals were the best and added a lot of humor. I wasn’t as crazy about the first few chapters of the book; some of the description was too much and tried too hard to be screwball comedy. Once I got through that, things were pretty smooth sailing—the book was a fairly quick read. Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC via NetGalley.

I thought this was really cute!
I typically do not prefer historical fiction but it depends on what it is and in the end this type of story that happens to take place in the past but doesn’t get bogged down in it is the type I enjoy. I came upon this audiobook from a post from the publisher and I was searching for something to listen to whilst I got a project completed so it came at the right moment.

It was marketed as “whimsical” and that’s exactly what it was.
I enjoyed the cozy feeling to it while still uplifting a strong FMC who was in a profession that would be very uncommon for a woman at the time. I love the strong willed character who got the job done and the breaking barriers of the time.

As far as the audiobook facet.. the Narrator Marisa Calin did a fabulous job. She had a lovely British accented voice and spoke clearly whilst at a good natural pace at the 1x speed.
I chose to listen at 1.5x speed and it was still very easily understandable at that speed. I also tried the 1.75x speed for a short bit and it was still understandable but at 2x speed it was too fast for me.

Lastly, I enjoyed the romance and cozy mystery genre combo! It was the second book I read in the last few days that had that combo and I think I’ll seek out more crossovers like these.

I am thankful to have gotten the audio ALC for free from Hachette Audio through NetGalley to read which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily leave a review.

My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars

⭐️ Hated it
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again

This was fine and a quick enough read but ultimately not for me. The premise was interesting, but the pacing was uneven and the humor was a little too silly for me. I think there was a lot of plot crammed into a story that's supposed to have a romance and I lost interest between the different shifts. I did appreciate the social commentary on the role of women and disability perspectives of the time but it was pretty heavy handed.

I didn't read the first in the series and was quite fine, so this could be read as a standalone. If you enjoy cutesy or silly humor with a stubborn historic spinster FMC, I think this would be a pretty amusing for you.

Thank you, Forever (Grand Central Publishing), for the arc!

A mystery that keeps you guessing and a romance of misfits. Alexander and Georgina are both outcasts of their own right. Alexander has suffered isolation in his own family for physical ailments outside his control and Georgina faced the stigma of being an educated miss, isolated because of her gender and refusal to conform. These both prove such monumental messages, that one is defined by the actions of their life not their status or appearance. Their romance was a gently growing flame and those sweet tender connections made for a compelling story that I truly enjoyed.
Marisa Calin was a great narrator choice. Her tone is perfectly tuned to historical romance. She has a wide array of emotion that she taps into through the different characters and was fabulous to listen to.

I loved Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man, and this book was just as good! This one is set within the same London universe, focusing on the Black Sheep Coffeehouse and its patrons. Lady Charlotte Talbot happens to be Alexander's twin sister.

This book is a blend of my two favorite genres historical mystery and romance. Our Dear Miss H features an array of endearing characters and amusing scenarios. This series keeps getting better with each installment, and I can't wait for more. If you're into romance, mystery, and historical fiction, you should absolutely check it out.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

3.5 rounded up

This was a fun feminist, historical romance that has a Duke and a woman antiquities lover pairing up to track down a missing person and some stolen artefacts while falling in love along the way. There was swoony moments, lots of action and some great spice too. I especially liked that the Duke had a disabled leg and used a cane. Great on audio and perfect for fans of books like Earl's trip by Jenny Holiday or authors like Evie Dunmore and Elizabeth Everett. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

⭐️ 2.5/5
🌶️ 2/5

I personally do not enjoy reading about people lusting after each other. I read through their first kiss.🥲 There was another part where I could tell it was going to get spicy so I skipped past it; I don’t know what happened. Since this is a dual POV, we read that both of the characters are wanting to embrace and kiss and all that jazz…

Anyway, the spice could’ve been worse, but minus 2.5⭐️ because of it. The story is otherwise not that exciting so if this book would’ve had no spice I might’ve rated it a 3.5.

Violet Marsh's 'Our Dear Miss H is on the Case' is a heartwarming historical mystery that feels like a warm hug. Miss H, a smart and determined heroine, is a character you instantly root for, and her connection with her love interest is simply perfect. The story is filled with interesting characters, each with their own depth and growth, creating a wonderful found family. The blend of humor, sweet romance, and a gentle mystery kept me thoroughly engaged. I appreciated the clever use of social customs and the subtle commentary on gender roles. With cute pets, including delightful chickens, and a cozy atmosphere, this book is a must-read. It's a sweet and satisfying story that leaves you wanting more. 5 stars, highly recommend! I read this book not realizing it was a sequel to “Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man” - this book was a true delight as a stand alone! The characters are colorful and witty and sometimes down right mischievous in a lovable way.

The story is set in 1700 and our two main characters, Georgina and Alexander, have weather several socials season and are enjoying the spinster and bachelor life. Their families do not agree, lineage and image is to take priority!

Along side this story line, Georgina’s dear cousin Percy has gone missing and she is determined to find him and return him safe - she is soon to learn things are not what they seem.

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for an early review audiobook.

Thank you to to the author, and Hachette Audio for the free audiobook arc received through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is a lot of fun! I enjoyed it thoroughly, even if it is somewhat predictable and the mystery part not the most mysterious out there.

That said, the romance was swooning, even if the main couple were a little insta-lovey. I listened to this audiobook in a busy time, and it was perfect for just turning my brain off and enjoying Georgina and Alexander’s (mis)adventures.

Georgina is a nice fmc; she is of her time, but still modern, and the back-and-forths between her and Alexander are hilarious and/or swooney.
Alexander is also a great Mmc, and I love the disabled rep he brings to the story!

I must also confess my love to the entire ‘fashion rooster’ subplot. It was hilarious.

The side characters were also nice, and the villain(s) made for an intriguing love story to say the least.

I do, however, also have some more negative critique. Firstly, the chapters are VERY long. Now, I don’t mind a long chapter every now and then, but a lot of the chapters could easily have been split into two. However, that’s a minor thing.
It would also have been nice to get to now the side characters better.
Further, the actual crimes are resolved pretty easily, where I wouldn’t have minded a few more complications, but honestly, I enjoyed the book nonetheless.

I listened to this book as an audiobook produced by Hachette Audio, narrated by Marisa Calin, and I enjoyed it a lot. Calin kept up a nice pace, making it possible to listen to the book while doing other things and still feeling the emotions of the characters and the story.

Overall, this is a great book for when you want to turn your brain off and just escape the real world into a regency romance with a touch of mystery.

All in all, 4 stars

Georgina Harrington is an antiquities scholar forced to publish as her cousin Percy because she’s a woman. When she digs up a gold mask for Percy to present at an Antiquities Society, he goes missing. Percy's best friend Alexander Lovett (twin brother of Charlotte from 'Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man') is considered an embarrassment by his abusive father for being born with a club foot. Left in lifelong pain and disfigurement after being forced to undergo corrective surgeries, Alex likes adventure, especially curricle racing. The two team up to find Percy while also told they're being forced to marry by Georgie’s half-brother and Alex’s father.

This was a lot of fun, I adored Georgie and Alex. The two of them were perfect together, her a blue stocking and he a man of action and adventure. Alex is a sweetheart who supports and encourages Georgie and values her as an equal. I loved all the gang from The Black Sheep and found the prank about the chooks hilarious. However, there were times I felt that the pace lagged with too much time on the spice instead of solving the mystery (hence my rating). I love that they had an instant attraction, but plot-wise I think a slow burn would’ve been stronger given one of the central conflicts was that they were being forced to marry by their families.

A fun historical romp com with action, adventure and mystery. I look forward to more stories from the Black Sheep gang.

Thanks to Forever/Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC.

This was a quick fun read! I love these historical romance books with an FMC who is strong and independent and somehow always finds themselves caught up in a mystery. I especially loved that it included archaeological finds, which is a subject I love.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced e-arc!!

After Georgina’s cousin Percy disappears with her most recent and very precious archeological find, she finds herself in London, relying on Percy’s feckless best friend Alexander to help her retrieve her cousin and her fossil!

This is your classic historical romance, where two people who are against marriage in general or the mechanisms of their parents matchmaking Val to not be interested in each other … but find themselves together and very interested!

I personally really enjoyed Georgina and Alexander and thought they made a great pairing. Alexander was very underappreciated and Georgina eventually sees his value and seriousness. And on the flipside Alex recognizes Georgina scientific work and strives to help her take ownership of her discoveries and ability.

This is the second book in the series, but you can easily jump in right here and move forward.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Marisa Calin and I enjoyed her voice work. She had a good voice for his romance, and she intoned a lot of fun and mischief into her reading. She made the book very lively and a lot of fun.

This is a review of the audiobook.
