Angela Maria Lambert was a British journalist and author. She is best known for her novels A Rather English Marriage and Kiss and Kin, the latter of which won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award.
A well written and well researched book on the subject of cultural differences and our lack of empathy for those differences. It also highlights the very pertinent subjects of the psychology of bullying, and male toxicity in our communities throughout the world. Ultimately, the message at the conclusion of this book, is that no matter the culture of the characters, their views are entrenched by their upbringing and associations, especially home environment and peer group pressure. We are moulded both by Nature and Nurture. A child raised in an environment of violence and lack of love becomes a ticking time bomb with the potential to explode. Both Sam and Jake are products of their home environments, however their characters are very different, but they both react to situations in similar ways, although Sam lives with guilt and regret, but Jake displays no compassion. My one criticism, in spite of the beautifully written narrative, the pathos, and heart wrenching tragedy of the story, is that I personally found the conclusion unconvincing. The reason, - I could not believe that Sam’s character would have been able to live with his final actions into the future, due to the guilt he displayed after the rape, and his religious background.
Angela Lambert is one of my favourite authors. The combination of her writing skills and her storylines makes her eminently readable. No two novels of hers are alike. In this black tragedy covering three decades, two cultures and characters interlink with tragic consequences.
I have read this book twice over the past decade. Each time I have been moved by the pathos, beauty and tragedy that unfolds in the clash of cultures in an earlier, colonial (or empire) period. This is a powerful book
afraid I only got halfway through this book. Found it very boring. And I really found the Suffolk dialogue difficult to get through & annoying. I do love to hear different accents & am sorry a lot are dying but this really got too much in the way of the prose.
