Just Us is the first book in Riley J. Ford's Just Series, but can be read as a standalone. While Avery's story does continue in the second book Just You, the reader is not left with a huge cliffhanger at the end of this book and can easily be read separately. I had never read anything by Riley J. Ford before this book, but I really liked this story a lot! I thought that Ford's writing style was engaging and I didn't want to put this one down. It was well written, and the characters were great. I can't wait to read more from Ford in the future, starting with Just You.
Avery Hill and Hayden Stuart work together and go to the same school. They have been best friends for a long time but when there is a dance at school they find their relationship changing. Soon they are dating one another, and falling in love for the first time. Hayden and Avery might be their first loves and high school sweethearts, but they begin to make plans for their future. When Hayden gets accepted to college in Los Angeles, they agree that Avery will follow as soon as she can and begin their life together. They plan to finish school, get married and start a family together. But when tragedy strikes them, their plans are forever ruined. Now Avery must figure out how to move forward with her life knowing that things will never be the same.
I loved Avery and Hayden. They were both so sweet and loving. They truly cared about one another, and you could tell that their feelings for each other were so real. They saw the best in one another and were truly committed to each other. Hayden was smart and loyal, and I loved that he was such a good friend and boyfriend. Avery was easy to like and relate to, and I thought that she was great. She always wanted what was best for Hayden, and was really supportive of him. I loved how patient they were with each other. They took things slow and let their relationship evolve naturally. I liked that they didn't rush to sleep together, and that what they shared meant something to them. Their relationship was exactly what a true first love should be, and I couldn't help but fall in love right along with them.
This book definitely brought out all the feels though, and I would definitely recommend having some tissues on hand when reading this one. While this story did have me crying, it was heart breaking but beautiful. My heart aches for the characters in this book, and I hope that they find some happiness and peace in the next book. I won't spoil what happens, but after reading this book trust me you will want to pick up the next one immediately. This one was short and easy to get into and I couldn't put it down. I really liked this story, and it is one that will stick with me. I can't wait to read the next one and see what the future has in store for these characters. I will absolutely be looking for more from Riley J. Ford in the future and would recommend this book to anyone looking for a story about a first love and the kind of love that lasts forever.

“The only time I’d ever seen a male penis was when Ava and I were freshmen buying candy at a liquor store, and she had picked up a Playgirl magazine. She’d opened it to the centerfold, and what I’d seen had shocked me so badly that I’d run out of the liquor store, covering my eyes. Ava had followed, doubled over in giggles. The centerfold had been burned into my brain ever since: a grinning tanned man with a member the size of a small baseball bat. It looked like “it” would hurt.”
“It was as if I was suddenly seeing him for the first time: his rough but chiseled face, strong jaw, the long lashes on his brown eyes, the utter vulnerability that he tried valiantly to hide behind a cocky and macho exterior. It made my heart ache to see him like this, so destroyed. For an instant, I wanted the jerk back, the guy I disliked…”
My Review:
Before picking up Just Us, my one and only experience with Riley Ford’s work was Carpe DiEmily - after stumbling into it as a free offering a few years ago. I had enjoyed it and was expecting something similar. I was totally unprepared for the depth of emotion in this book, so needless to say – I was caught off guard. I rarely cry when reading books, even during those that others say required a full box of tissues… but found I was moved to tears more than once, and also had quite an ugly cry as well. Ms. Ford’s writing was insightful, perceptive, and consuming. It brought back many good and some random memories of how we think and feel when we are young and have so much to learn, fear, and await. I felt like she had drilled a hole into my skull and tapped into my mental and emotional memory banks. She vividly, and often ironically, detailed so many experiences of youth including self-consciousness, insecurity, impatience, confusion, self-doubt, as well as the thrills of self and sexual discoveries, it was all there - as if the events were shiny and new. I felt a time warp. But after flying so high, I fell just as hard, and had to search for that dusty box of tissues. Yet, I am anxious to start the next book in the series – as even though she made me cry, I thirst for more of the same. Yes, her writing is THAT good!
Avery and Hayden are each other's first loves. They shared a strong friendship that turned into much more. We know from the beginning of this book that we are hearing a story from the past, and in this first in the series we get to see the development of Avery and Haden's relationship and then the event that changed their lives forever.
One of the things I really liked about this book was seeing how Avery handled all of the new feelings and desires she had as she was experiencing romantic love and attraction for the first time. I enjoyed that she and Hayden were close friends first and then dealt with the challenging emotions that came with discovering they wanted more than friendship from one another. Hayden's parents are a challenging negative force to contend with, but other than that, it is difficult to find fault with any aspect of Hayden. He is patient, kind, and loving. The dialogue between Avery and Hayden gets a bit hyperbolic at times, but considering the intensity of the emotional experiences they are sharing, and their youth, it didn't distract too much from the story. The high level of satisfaction and joy the characters were experiencing, along with some foreshadowing statements at the beginning of the book had me waiting for something to go wrong. And boy does it. The lives of the main characters are altered in a serious way, and it is tough to see how they will move forward. This book doesn't end on a cliff hanger, but it does provide the reader with a reason to want to continue reading to see where the lives of these characters will go. I will be moving on immediately to the next in the series.

As I'd never heard of this author before I found this to be an unexpected delight that pushes all your emotional buttons. It's a quick yet well written read that realistically portrays all those feelings you experience with your first love. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be filled to the top with feelings of warmth that unfortunately crash down when tragedy strikes.
Hayden and Avery were great friends throughout childhood who one night decide to be more. They have a few obstacles to their romance though in the form of their parents, but luckily have the help of their close friend Bryce to help their romance flourish. They soon have their whole future planned out with their HEA in sight when they're torn apart by a single event. They, and we, are left with a huge whole in our hearts and are left praying for a HEA. Hayden and Avery were wonderful together. Both were mature beyond their years and immensely supportive of each other. Their relationship evolved slowly which made their coming together all the richer and their falling apart all the more painful.
The writing in this story was powerful, engendering strong emotions that brought you back to your own first love. The pace kept me fully immersed in their story experiencing all their joys and pains along with them. While there's not a cliffhanger the future is definitely altered for everyone, including Bryce, in an ending that was shocking. This is a memorable start to an unforgettable story and I highly recommend it and greatly anticipate the sequel!
This was the first book I have read by Riley Ford. And I am glad I did read it. The blurb had my attention when I read it. But I honestly don't think the blurb does it justice. This book is one of two. This one can be read as a standalone. But you will want to read the second one. I don't think I could of waited long for the second one, I needed to read it to see what happens. I read both in two days, I couldn't put them down.
*** BE WARNED YOU NEED SUPPLIES WITH THESE BOOKS, ESPECIALLY THIS ONE.***
I can honestly say this book will pull at your emotions. I will admit I cried, big fat tears. This book broke my heart. It was unfair in so many ways. And because of that I am not going to tell you anything about this book. It was beautifully written. The story was stunning. The character's buried themselves deep into your heart. While you read this book you feel like it's playing out like a film inside your head.
There isn't one part of this story I didn't like or felt like it didn't work. Everything about it worked. I loved this book. It was truly heartbreaking and amazing. This is a fantastic read. One I think you need to put straight to the top of your "TBR" list.
This book gets 5/5 stars and 5/5 for movie moments.
Hayden and Avery have been friends for years. Then they realise they have feelings for each other and decide to move outside the friend zone and into the dating zone. The first 40% or so of this book is just so sugary sweet and innocent. Avery is clearly a girl in love and Hayden has none of the macho arrogance that we usually read about. The whole build up to them both losing their V plates was very sensitively done. Hayden was so attentive to Avery’s needs and making sure she was ok that I really hope any virgins reading this, will get this kind of introduction to sex rather than the memories I used to leave a girl with!!
Enter Bryce, yep there’s always a bad boy. I don’t think he was actually bad, just made a very bad choice and has to live with the consequences.
This is where the whole book tone shifted from smiling as you share the sweet love growing between Avery and Hayden, to the black shutters and barbed wire piercing your heart. Trust me when I say, the author has done an excellent job evoking the reader to feel every cutting remark, every tear is shared and my heart broke for Bryce, it broke for Avery.
The Just Series provides a wide range of emotions. The books take you from a sappy, happy, lovely feeling right down to the depths of despair. The second book slowly but surely guides you back to happiness but not without a heartbroken journey. I just knew reading the blurb I was bound to shed some tears with this story and true enough... I did!
Just Us started out like any teen romance novel. Having the reader feel all giddy inside. The story is sweet and innocent but towards the end of the book a tragedy takes places that turns this book into a dark place. The book stayed dark until the characters healed in the second book.
I loved Hayden and Avery's relationship. It was so real. They were just kids, only seventeen. Just discovering what love and lust really meant to them. Hayden is the perfect boyfriend for Avery; caring, loving, and romantic. He has their future all planned out for them. But sometimes life is painful and almost to hard to bare. We have to keep living, replacing the pain with a void, to just make us live our life.

We meet Avery Hill a typical high school student who has a best friend named Hayden Stuart. They have known each other for years and one eventful day she realizes that Hayden wants more than friendship. At first she denies her feelings for a fear of losing their close friendship but then she realizes her own mutual feelings.
First loves as they share their firsts with each other despite his mother forbidding him to see her and that his mom wants him to focus on his grades to get into a good college. They manage to secretly see each other with the aid of his best friend Bryce.
On his birthday they sneak off to the beach with the aid of Bryce and making plans for the future together. Bryce had a few beers before picking them up and ends up in an accident that forever changes all their lives.
Will Avery and Bryce survive without Hayden and the guilt they both share? We watch how quickly things can change in a blink of an eye.
These a four tear stained stars! I cried like a baby in this but, oh what a beautiful story! A romance that we would all love to have! I loved getting to read these two's romance. So sweet and beautiful. Friends that become so much more! Their journey to love is wonderful and gives you that happy feeling that we all love. After the big tragedy, I wasn't sure I could go on in this book. I felt so much with this. I hated it. I went from love to hate in this book but, not due to quality. My love and hate was for the circumstances around Avery and Hayden. This was a beautifully written story that I would say is a must read. Some don't like to cry so, if that is you, suck it up and read it anyways! It is so worth it. I am kind of excited to read the next book and kind of apprehensive. I don't know if I am going to like where this story goes. But, I still want to know what comes next in the lives of the main characters.
This is a really good romance story! I already love Riley's writing style and knew that I would not be disappointed with this book.
This is a young love story of two seventeen year olds who are experiencing that first true love. It's everything that we wish our first love could be. But there are forces against them. First his mom, then life itself. I am not going to spoil the story for you here. But I promise you that this is a very good read and you don't want to miss it. Grab a drink and get comfy because once you start, you will not want to stop reading. I would also recommend that you download the second part so that you can see what happens to Avery next.
In this book you see Avery go from teenager into the harsh reality of adulthood, sometimes life just isn't fair. You got abit of everything in this book, true love and total heartbreak. It will take you on an emotional rollercoaster that's for sure.
Avery and Hayden are best friends but they both have feelings for each other, once they both admit what they are feeling, they quickly fall in love. Everything in perfect until tragedy strikes.
The storyline is easy to follow. This is a sweet novella but turns into an emotional read. I loved watching the relationship grow between Avery and Hayden.
I received this for an honest review. I have to say that this was a sweet and wonderful read. Avery and Hayden are everything high school sweethearts should be. Avery is a high school student who works with one of her best friends Hayden, Hayden is also a high school student who is working towards college. They meet and become best friends. Hayden has always liked Avery more than friends. This was a beautiful story of their falling in love. A very enjoyable read...
This is my first book by this author and I loved it. It can be read as a standalone. However if your like me you will wanna jump straight into book two.
This is the story of Avery and Hayden's first true love. It's a beautifully written and heart breaking story. Be warned tissues may be needed!!

5 Stars from Sammy's Book Obsession! This was my first read by Riley J. Ford. I really enjoyed the story. It was a very bitter-sweet read that left me thinking about it well after I finished it. The writing was well done and the characters were well described and developed. I enjoyed the book enough to jump right into the second one immediately. I will very likely read more from this author!
At the beginning I thought the book was a little immature for me. But the writer made the characters so believable I actually became emotional over Avery's heartache. I ended up ordering the next book just because I have to know what happens with Avery
I’ll admit that I didn’t enjoy Just Us as much as I thought I would. I’m not sure if it had anything to do with the fact that I was pining over this one every since the day I seen the cover and read the blurb. While I’ve never experienced Ms. Ford’s work I knew I needed to read Just Us because it had everything that I could ever want in a good read there was romance and drama. What I didn’t expect was puppy love, ugh it was like watching my teens “love life” play out.
Just Us is told from Avery Hill POV, to say that I didn’t care for her much would be an overstatement she was too emotional for me to deal with. Maybe if I wasn’t so far away from my high school mindset it would have been different. The only thing she talked about was how cute Hayden was, how smart he was, how this that and the third he was. Gag me please.
Not only is Hayden Stuart , Avery’s best friend but also her first love. While I liked him ok I still felt like I didn’t get a chance to know him outside of Avery’s and I think she was a little bias.
The one character I wish I got to know more about was Hayden’s other friend Bryce while he was around and I felt a major part of the story I wanted to know more about him other than how much Avery hated him.
I think if you’re a fan of puppy love mixed with heartache than Just Us would be a proper quick read.

Oh the feels… take out a box of tissues because this story will have you crying in no time. This story was a wonderful read. The beginning is sweet and heart warming and everything that is a first love. The narration is what really caught my attention the main character is retelling the story of her first love; obviously something went wrong because they aren’t together anymore, but we don’t actually find out until later on in the story.
The story just kinda sucked me in, I was able to finish it in one sitting. I really love stories that are about first love so I was enjoying reading about how Avery and Hayden were best friends and then it turned into more. They were so sweet making plans and sneaking around. Then the shoe dropped, so to speak and man I certainly wasn’t expecting the unfortunate turn of events. There is so much pain and devastation going on in the second part of the book that I was crying like a little baby. My heart was torn in two for Avery, it’s just too much to handle.
Just Us was an easy read in the sense that the pacing and dialog were good. The ending though felt abrupt. Just as I was getting into the book and just as Avery was recovering that was it the end, she decided what she was going to do and bam the book ended. I get that there is a second part to the series but I would have liked a little more closure for this book. All in all it’s a good story.
It was good enough that I skimmed through to find out the end, but overall pretty bad. The writing was mediocre and the characters just were so flat to me. Avery was really annoying, and I feel like we hardly got to know Hayden. It just throws you into this whole thing with this weird, cheesy teenage dialogue. I had just finished reading an amazing NA called The Hookup, so I guess my standards were set too high for this read. Just not my cup of tea, not even interesting enough to read the 2nd one. Also, don't let the description fool you. There was more "heat factor" in Judy Blumes "forever" than this one.
Fantastic book, but I've never cried so hard!! I loved Hayden and Avery's story. Just an incredible story that touches your heart and leaves you heartbroken. A excellent read!! You'll need a full box of tissue nearby for this one.
