Submersion is the latest thriller from Guy A. Johnson - the author of Back to the Old House and doG Backwards - set in the claustrophobic environs of a devastated city, where luxury is absent, food scarce and it’s not clear who you can trust. Rich with dark and detailed characterisations, like his previous works, its unexpected twists and shocks will keep you hooked and guessing till the very end… A missing girl. A search across a flooded city. A resurgence of terror. And there’s something in the water. Something pushing its way up to the surface. Young Billy finds it one day when he is rowing a borrowed boat home. It’s dead, seemingly harmless, but what it represents isn’t. Far from it. But that’s not all. A crazy old hoarder. A curious old shop, frozen in time. A face at a window. And at the heart of it all, the missing girl…
I LOVED THIS BOOK. It held my interest right till the very end, and left me wanting to read the sequel NOW. However, I wasn't disappointed that all the loose ends weren't tied up with a nice little bow. There were many twists and turns but not so many that I couldn’t follow them all. The only reason I could not give it five stars is because of the grammar, punctuation and tense issues, and the misplaced character references … their names as well as their pronouns … mostly occurring in the last quadrant of the book. I was so deeply involved that I could easily replace Esther’s name with Agnes’ when the occasion arose, and assign the right pronoun, but I was disappointed that such a fine story line lacked a good editing. Still, I would HIGHLY recommend this Guy A. Johnson book … taking place on the edge of the Black Sea and involving the “taking” of children for experimental purposes – for brains as well as brawn.
Mr. Johnson, if you’re reading this, please correct those bloopers!
secrets. This book was full of juicy secrets and weird twists. Add in a flooded world, weird government rations on food, electricity, and water, wild, man eating dogs and you have yourself one very interesting and unique story. I have to say the way the author wrote this book was genius. I can only describe it as sex with a skilled lover. He built up the anticipation about a secret to be revealed only to tease and tantalize and drag you along breathlessly. And just when you couldn't take it he would switch gears and start this process all over again with another character and yet another shocking revelation. This was definitely in the top 5 most interesting books I have read this year.
I never have high expectations for free downloads, so I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I felt like I knew the characters and couldn't wait to turn the page to see what happened next. My only disappointment is that I have to wait until 2016 to find out what happens next!
