—Liz Moore, New York Times bestselling author of The God of the Woods

Washington Post ‘Best Mystery Novel’ of 2025

When a Native teenager vanishes from her small town—a place with dark ties to an elite historical society—archaeologist Syd Walker is called to investigate...from bestselling author Vanessa Lillie.

In the hours before dawn at a local summer camp, Bureau of Indian Affairs archaeologist Syd Walker receives an alarming newly discovered skeletal remains have been stolen. Not only have bones gone missing, but a Native teen girl has disappeared near the camp, and law enforcement dismisses her family's fears.

As Syd investigates both crimes, she's drawn into a world of privileged campers and their wealthy parents—most of them members of the Founders Society, an exclusive club whose members trace their lineage to the first colonists and claim ancestral rights to the land, despite fierce objections from the local tribal community. And it's not the first time something—or someone—has gone missing from the camp.

The deeper Syd digs, the more she realizes these aren't isolated incidents. A pattern of disappearances stretches back generations, all leading to the Founders Society's doorstep. But exposing the truth means confronting not just the town's most powerful families, but also a legacy of violence that refuses to stay buried.

From the national bestselling author of Blood Sisters (a Washington Post Best Mystery of the Year and Target Book Club pick) comes a new Syd Walker novel that proves the sins of the past are destined to repeat until the truth is finally unearthed.

The Bone Thief by Vanessa Lillie is a compelling and heart-wrenching mystery featuring Syd Walker, a Cherokee archeologist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. While this is a fictional story, it deals with real-life issues and is the second book in the series.

Syd lives and works in South County, Rhode Island. She is contacted when the remains are found on private property was originally land belonging to the local Narragansett indigenous people. Soon she’s contacted again when the remains disappear overnight. She also learns a Native teenager has vanished as well from an elite historical society with dark ties.

As Syd investigates both crimes, she works with the children of privileged campers and is drawn into their wealthy parents’ world. Many of them are members of the Founders Society, a club whose members trace their lineage to the first colonists. As Syd investigates, she learns it’s not the first someone or some thing has gone missing from the camp and the pattern stretches back generations.

Syd is dedicated to her job, but tends to go it alone rather than asking for help and taking back-up. She’s also facing several personal relationship challenges. She’s determined and tenacious, but sometimes lets preconceived ideas override what others tell her. However, her purposefulness towards getting answers and solving the mysteries never wavers.

This well-written and well-researched novel transported me to Rhode Island in 2008. Descriptions allowed me to easily visualize the conditions without slowing the pace. I was immediately pulled into the story and stayed engaged throughout. Dynamic characters and fantastic world-building combined with a great plot, disturbing scenes, and excellent pacing are a standard expectation with this author. She has once again delivered that in this excellent novel. It was fast-paced with a smooth flow. The plot is twisty and multi-layered with several surprises along the way. Themes include violence against women and girls, treatment of those who are different or who have a different ancestry, poverty, relationships, corruption, and much more.

Overall, I am glad I read this novel, which was suspenseful, gritty, horrifying, thought-provoking, heartbreaking, and atmospheric. While fictional, it includes or references real events that have occurred in the area. With plenty of action, this novel will appeal to many crime thriller fans too. The author also weaves in information about American history and politics as it relates to Native Americans. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. The author’s note at the end of the book was very informative. I highly recommend this novel.

Our favorite BIA agent is back!

The Bone Thief picks up several months after Blood Sisters ends. Even though it's been a couple of years since I read Blood Sisters, the story and its details came back to me as soon as I picked this one up.

The Bone Thief is a riveting, layered, thriller centered around a mystery. I found myself immediately engrossed in the story and found it impossible to put down. Full of well-developed characters and vivid settings, The Bone Thief is a story that I will not be forgetting anytime soon!

Syd Walker has become my favorite fictional character. Syd’s relentless hard work and unwavering dedication to finding these missing women and girls are inspiring. The Bone Thief confirmed why Vanessa Lillie is my favorite thriller author. Vanessa proves why she's my favorite author time and time again. She is one of the few authors who makes me feel seen with her representation of indigenous women. I highly recommend The Bone Thief and I can see many readers loving this one just as much as I have. Also, if you haven't already, make sure you read Blood Sisters before picking this one up.

The Bone Thief by Vanessa Lillie will be available on October 28!

Unburying Lives

Vanessa Lillie's novel, “Blood Sisters,” introduced readers to Syd Walker, a Native American archeologist employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Syd, who occupies a unique position linking the past and present, returned to her hometown of Pincer, Oklahoma, in the book to investigate a personal case. The narrative additionally integrated the critical issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), particularly following the disappearance of Syd's sister. "Blood Sisters" was a riveting read, and I was eager for Syd’s character to return.

"The Bone Thief" is the dynamic sequel in which Syd, having achieved a promotion within the Rhode Island BIA, undertakes the investigation of two interconnected mysteries. She is assigned to investigate the theft of 300-year-old female skeletal remains from a nearby summer camp. Simultaneously, a young Native woman and former intern of Syd’s named Naomi vanishes in the same area. Law enforcement is typically dismissive of Naomi's case, which compels Syd to take on both the disappearance and the theft investigation.

The summer camp is run by the Founders Society, a historical club whose members boast a direct bloodline to the original colonists and who hold claim to the property, which was formerly inhabited by the local Narragansett tribe. Although repulsed by the Founders' racist rituals and stereotypes, Syd ingratiates herself with the group, believing the key to her cases lies within the organization. She soon discovers a disturbing, generations-long series of disappearances—of both people and artifacts—all linked to the Founders Society.

The book compellingly addresses several significant themes, with the concept of archaeology and reclamation being central. Historically, the practice of acquiring indigenous remains as artifacts or curiosities for private ownership or public exhibition was frequently rationalized by the dehumanizing premise that indigenous peoples were somehow inferior.

Also highlighted is the ongoing obscenity of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. A major concern in these numerous unsolved cases is the perceived apathy of law enforcement. The deliberate targeting of this group of women is also a stark reflection of the little value assigned to their lives.

This is an exceptional book and a truly compelling series. Syd is a remarkable, albeit flawed, character whose primary motivation is consistently to ensure justice is achieved. The tempo of the mystery never slackens, as Lillie's social commentary enhances Syd's investigation.

Thank you to the Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for providing an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review. #TheBoneThief #NetGalley.

The Bone Thief by Author Vanessa Lillie is the follow up novel to Blood Sisters in which readers were introduced to Syd Walker, a Cherokee archeologist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. While this series is fictional, many of the events explored within both books are deeply rooted in American History and remain real-life issues for Indigenous people living on reservations today. Lillie does an admirable job of seamlessly incorporating history with fiction to deliver a thought provoking, heartbreaking mystery that's impossible to put down.

BIA Agent Syd Walker has returned to the Narragansett Reservation in Rhode Island when she learns skeletal remains that may be those of a 300-year-old Indian sachem have been discovered on contested land now in the hands of the Founders' Society, an elite group of privileged people claiming to trace their heritage back to the first colonists. Syd assists in the archeological recovery; however, is forced to secure and leave the remains in the grave overnight. When she returns in the morning with tribal members, the grave is empty. At the same time, Syd learns a Native woman she knows is missing, and authorities are dismissing her as a runaway. Syd suspects otherwise and quietly begins her own investigation. When she uncovers a long history of missing girls and artifacts with possible ties to powerful, privileged families within the Founder's Society, she realizes exposing them and the dark secrets they've kept buried is the only way to unveil the truth even though doing so puts her on a killer's radar. Syd's vow to reap justice for the missing women never wavers even at the cost of her own safety.

Syd Walker is a determined, tenacious protagonist whose own native heritage makes her the perfect advocate for the rights of the Narragansett tribe; however, she finds herself torn between returning artifacts and skeletal remains to their rightful people and the opportunity to educate all people on Native history by displaying them in museums. The author's impressive three-dimensional characterizations are realistic, evoking empathy from readers. A tension ladened, multi-layered plot line and taut writing drive a fast pace throughout this engaging story with vivid descriptive passages drawing readers into the heart of the conflict. As I was reading, an overbearing sense of dread, of impending doom, left chill bumps on my arms.

Author Vanessa Lillie draws on her own heritage, life experiences and professionally researched American History to deliver a powerful, captivating story in The Bone Thief. The high rate of poverty, addiction, and economic struggles are well documented as are the suspicious disappearances of Indigenous women and the appalling theft of Native artifacts and skeletal remains. Lillie’s mission to draw attention to the legacy of violence and corruption that continues to surround Native Americans today is remarkable and noteworthy.

The Bone Thief is a riveting, thought-provoking, must-read mystery, a perfect blend of truth and fiction that resonated with this reader for days after reading the last action-packed page. The author’s portrayal of American history and the way it binds people to a place over time is amazing. Highly recommended to fans of well-written mysteries that spotlight the injustices perpetrated against Native Americans throughout history as well as history buffs.

This was such a multi-faceted novel exploring the "ownership" of archeological remains, the different versions of history, and how the long-lasting effects of trauma.

Syd, a Cherokee archaeologist, was a sensitive and well-meaning character. I loved her sweet relationship with her wife and her dedication to searching for a lost Native woman in the area. There are clashes between the local law, the tribe, the wealthy and warped Founder's Society, and family members.

In the middle of all of this is the unearthed skeleton of the female sachem (chieftain). Lillie did a fantastic job connecting this ancient woman to the current generation of Native women.

(P.S. I recommend reading this as I found the audiobook narration unemotional).

General Thoughts:
This was a thrilling, informative and at times emotional read. Centered around the return of indigenous remains, land back and the forced removal of Indigenous children from Native homes, the emotional impact of this thriller packed a huge punch.

The book definitely had a solid plot with thrilling reveals, suspenseful mystery and little to no predictable aspects for me. I could not put it down and found it even more compelling than the first book in the series.

I think the first book definitely needs to be read in order to fully appreciate this one fully. This author is only getting stronger with each book and I love that!

Can't wait for the next one.

THE BONE THIEF by Vanessa Lillie

Thank you @berkleypub for the gorgeous finished copy, and @vanessalillie for the ARC and for including me on your traveling ARC campaign 🫶🏼

Happy pub week! 🎉

I had the absolute privilege of captaining a traveling ARC team (go Team Three: Lillie’s Literati 🥳). It’s been such a joy connecting with fellow readers over our shared love of Vanessa Lillie’s work.

The Bone Thief is the sequel to Blood Sisters (which I loved, too!) and while I’d recommend reading them in order, Lillie does an excellent job getting readers up to speed, so it can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone.

The story follows Syd Walker, a BIA archaeologist called to investigate the theft of newly discovered skeletal remains in a town with deep ties to an elite historical society. When a Native teen vanishes near the same area, Syd begins to suspect the crimes are connected. As she digs deeper, she uncovers a legacy of violence buried for generations.

Superbly written and meticulously researched, this is a thriller with substance -- truth in fiction. Weaving interconnected themes of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW), colonization, and land rights, Lillie infuses cultural depth and urgent social commentary into a gripping, propulsive mystery. Another standout from Vanessa Lillie! 👏🏼

THE BONE THIEF starts off strong and doesn’t let up—with Lillie continuing to entertain and educate about the injustices towards the Indigenous population in North America. This time, the story hits close to home for Syd as it takes place in Rhode Island.

When BIA archaeologist Syd Walker learns skeletal remains have been stolen and a Native teen has gone missing, her search leads into a world of privileged campers and the secretive Founders Society, whose members claim ancestral rights over contested land. As Syd uncovers a history of disappearances tied to the Society, she realizes exposing the truth means confronting powerful families and a violent legacy.

Lillie does an excellent job blending history, horror, and mystery into THE BONE THIEF. This is a standalone sequel, meaning you do not need to read Blood Sisters to enjoy this one, but why do yourself a disservice?! This one is deeply suspenseful and gripping, with an ending that will leave you wanting more. Like c'mon we could get a whole ‘nother book about the Founders Society alone! I cannot wait to see what Vanessa has for readers next!

Lillie is a new-to-me author and this is the second book in the series, but I read it out of order, and truly enjoyed it!! I loved Lillie's writing style and I can't wait to go back and read Blood Sisters.

💀Audiobook Review💀
A stolen skeleton. A missing girl. A Native archaeologist racing against time.

This was a pulse-quickening mystery rooted in truth, grief, and reclamation. Syd Walker isn’t just solving crimes, she’s unearthing history, confronting injustice, and honoring the stories buried beneath the surface.

A haunting, heartfelt thriller that reminds us: bones don’t lie, but people do.

🎧 Carolina Hoyos brings Syd Walker to life with quiet power and emotional depth in The Bone Thief audiobook. Her voice carries grief, grit, and ancestral memory—making every moment feel urgent and true. A haunting listen that honors the story’s roots.

Vanessa Lillie also narrates portions of the audiobook Her contribution adds a personal, intimate layer to the story. It’s a rare treat when an author lends their voice, and here it deepens the emotional resonance beautifully.

This book just did not resonate with me. The underlying plot was quite believable, but the characters and the writing style did not do much for me. It was cumbersome and part of my disappointment is that I enjoy reading mysteries that involve native american history and culture. Others seem to have enjoyed the book so I will leave it you to decide to give it a try.

I received a free Kindle copy of this book courtesy of publisher with the understanding that I would post a review on Goodreads, Net Galley, Amazon, and my fiction book review blog.

“What happens to the land happens to the women. —Native wisdom” ~Blood Sisters by Vanessa Lillie

The Bone Thief opens to Syd Walker's navigating her new norm with her soon to be due pregnant wife, and their living situation with Luna and Gracie from previous events in Oklahoma. Syd is called to replace her old boss and the new camp archeologist while working for the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs). She is called to further assist with camp affairs as now there are artifacts and bones missing of the Narragansett Tribe from hundreds of years prior during early colonization. Syd also wonders if this has anything to do with the missing young Native woman from the tribe, she dismissed a few years early during her first dig. Syd's path continues to follow tribal lands being stripped away, their history being taken for others glory, and their women continuously being taken or disappearing from this world. Which if you did not know continues in this world every day.
The Bone Thief is a heart racing mystery from start to finish. However, it's a rich story of Native culture and the continued discrimination they face after all these years and what colonization has cost their ancestors and them to this day. It also beautifully brings forward the history of the Tribe and how they believe in the land, their ancestors, and the spirits of the world are with them and guiding them every day. It made me chuckle, it made me cry, and it made me want to rage for the stealing of their culture. I loved every single word and sentence of this book.
This is the second in the Syd Walker series, but honestly reads as a standalone since I previously did not read Blood Sisters. But you better believe I will go back now and immerse myself into Syd Walker's first book.

Thank you Vanessa Lillie for allowing me to be a part of this epic traveling arc of The Bone Thief and thank you for bringing Syd and her stories into the world!!

ARC review: No one works harder than Syd on a mission. Our favorite BIA agent is back fighting for justice and bringing corruption to light. There's a new missing woman, along with missing artifacts, and the trauma from book one is still strong.

This book was definitely a heavy read. We're introduced to The Founders Society, a white-washed version of history where the wrong people are leading the narrative. Her history is their entertainment and Syd finds herself in the middle to protect both the past and those of the present.

This is one of those books best read over a week or a few days so you can take in each piece rather than a quick bingeable read. Excited to be part of the launch team and The Bone Thief comes out 10/28/25!

4.5/5

I’m so honored to be part of the traveling ARC group that got to read The Bone Thief by Vanessa Lillie before it publishes in October! 🙌 This was my very first book by Vanessa, and I can confidently say it won’t be my last. This is technically the second book in the Syd Walker series, and while I didn’t get a chance to read book one yet (time totally got away from me), I never felt lost. That said, I’ll definitely be circling back because Syd Walker is the type of character I want more of.

Syd is just…solid. She’s a total bad arse! Not only is hardworking and relentless, she refused to stop searching for the truth even when she put herself in danger and jeopardized her own safety. Believe me, that happened more than once! There’s something just so inspiring about the way she fights for justice. Vanessa really did such a fantastic job of making Syd feel authentic and real and that's why I just couldn't get enough of her.

One of the things I appreciated most about this book is the way Vanessa highlights the struggles of Indigenous people. I mean I know it is a part of history but the way it was presented made me pause and reflect, and that is a trait in a book which I always value. It added an important aspect to an already intense mystery that just made me think.

Speaking of mystery, the pacing was on point. The entire story played out like a movie in my head. She did quite a great job describing the setting which painted a very atmospheric picture for me. The stakes were high and emotional which made it so I truly didn’t want to put it down.

This isn’t necessarily a light read, it’s heavier in tone and message, so definitely grab a blanket, a cozy drink, and be ready to fully immerse yourself in Syd’s world. For me, it was such a rewarding, thought-provoking, and intense read.

⭐ A solid, impactful mystery with a protagonist I can’t wait to spend more time with. Vanessa Lillie...consider me a new fan!

The Bone Thief is a thoughtful, suspenseful mystery. It is centred on a missing Indigenous woman and a contentious (white) historical society-led archaeological excavation of bones and artifacts of the Narragansett tribe on unceded Narragansett land. Issues around who tells the history of a people is a central theme of this story as is the ongoing effects of colonialism on Indigenous communities.

With an opening chapter that drops the reader immediately into the action, I was pulled into the story from the outset. Syd, a Cherokee archaeologist who works for the US Bureau of Indian Affairs, is a great character, a strong yet vulnerable woman who is determined to do the right thing even at great personal cost.

I enjoyed the LGBTQ representation, and liked the way the author carefully wove in descriptions of the culture and community of the Narragansett community, key historical events, and the history of the Indigenous artifacts. I also liked the even pacing of the story, the tense action scenes, and the way the author brought the various plot elements together at the end.

The Bone Thief is the second in a series with Syd (the first is Blood Sisters) but can be read as a standalone. Reading the first one though provides some important insights into Syd and it too is an interesting read.

Thanks to Vanessa Lillie for asking me to be co-captain of Team Canada’s participation in the travelling ARC program for The Bone Thief across Canada. My thanks also to Berkley Publishing for a digital copy of the book. All opinions are my own.

Bone Thief is book 2 in The Syd Walker series but completely stands on its own. The author quickly catches you up on book 1 so nothing is lost.

The book transports you into the lives of Native Americans. It is so emotional and compelling, and infuriating as it showed you all the inequities they face on an ongoing basis.

Syd Walker is a fantastic MC, she is so strong, fighting for what's right. She is also flawed and so real. She alone is worth reading the series for. The author did a tremendous job creating this character.

The Bone Thief follows Syd Walker, a Cherokee archaeologist who is called to investigate a disturbing discovery on the grounds of an exclusive summer camp in Rhode Island. Ancient remains have surfaced in a place controlled by a powerful group of families known as the Founders, and at the same time a Native teenage girl named Naomi goes missing. As Syd digs deeper, she uncovers a web of buried history, stolen heritage and long protected secrets tied to the land.

Even though the setup is fascinating, I personally struggled to stay connected to the characters. I went into this thinking it was a standalone because I was told I did not need to read the first book, but I actually think skipping it made it harder for me to really feel grounded in Syd’s emotional world. There are references, relationships and pieces of her past that probably would have landed more strongly if I had met her earlier. I plan to read the first book on my Kindle next to see if that fills in some of those gaps for me.

Listening to this on audio also didn’t help. The narrator’s delivery felt pretty flat and the emotional tone never fully lifted off the page for me. A story this layered really needs a narrator who can carry the weight of the cultural and personal stakes, and I didn’t get that here. I would definitely recommend print or ebook over the audiobook for this one.

What I did enjoy a lot was the education woven through the story about Native people, especially the way their burial sites, customs and community needs were ignored whenever they conflicted with the interests of the Founders. The book highlights how harm can continue across generations when history is hidden or rewritten, and those themes were the most powerful part of the experience for me.

Please do not skip the author’s note. It gives important historical context, explains the real world issues that inspired the story and offers great resources if you want to learn more. It made me appreciate the research and intention behind the book even more.

While this one didn’t fully click for me emotionally, I still found value in what it taught me and I will absolutely read more from Vanessa Lillie.

5⭐️ You know I love my crime novels, but I really love crime novels that teach me something and Vanessa Lillie’s books have done just that. BLOOD SISTERS was one of my favorite books of 2023 and I’ve been anxiously awaiting a sequel ever since!

The series follows Syd Walker, an archaeologist working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and THE BONE THIEF picks up shortly after the events of book one. This time we’re back in Rhode Island with Syd as she investigates a missing Native teenager. Her search leads to a wealthy local summer camp and eventually, a town Founder’s Society that’s full of secrets.

You can absolutely read this book as a standalone but I always think it helps to read a crime series in order to truly get to know and understand the main characters… and Syd is an especially great main character. Also, BLOOD SISTERS is an especially great book and definitely not one to skip!

As much as I would love to read a new book from Lillie every few months, I have so much respect for the time she took with THE BONE THIEF. She mentions “incorporating truth in fiction” in her author’s note and it’s crystal clear how meticulously she researches her books. She’s also put so much of her own life into her writing. This personal connection explains why I feel so much for Syd and the other women in this series. If you’ve ever wondered why representation matters so much, pick up these books.

Because of her lived experience and her unwavering support, Lillie is able to write about the history and culture and injustices experienced by indigenous people with such an open and passionate voice. She approaches important and very, very timely issues in a way that makes me feel compassion and a deep desire to educate myself (something a textbook can’t quite do!).

🎧I read the physical copy of this but did mostly audio for book one! When I talked about loving BLOOD SISTERS on audio, the author mentioned it was voiced and produced by Indigenous women!

🥳PUB DAY: OCT 28th!

Thank you to Vanessa Lillie and Berkley for this advanced reading copy.

After reading Blood Sisters (and absolutely loving it), I was so excited to read The Bone Thief and even more excited to participate in Vanessa's traveling ARC program as a team captain. This was action packed with Syd Walker as our main character again. I loved getting to see her character take shape from Blood Sisters to The Bone Thief. She's such a strong protagonist and I really hope we get to see more of her (as well as more of Mal, Luna, and Gracie)!

One of my favorite things about this novel is the passion you can feel in the writing. Vanessa has done so much research to bring the horrible truths to light about how Indigenous people have been treated and continue to be treated (please make sure to read her author's note). I truly learned so much without feeling like I was being lectured but instead reading a thriller woven with facts placed just right to propel the story forward. Vanessa is also a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and really brings her knowledge and passion for injustice to the forefront of this novel while also creating a story that kept me intrigued and glued to my seat until I was done.

Long story short - preorder preorder preorder! It comes out in October and you're going to want to read this. In the meantime, if you haven't read Blood Sisters... now is a great time to pick it up!! The Bone Thief can be read as a standalone (eh, maybe?) but I highly recommend reading Blood Sisters before because it really gives you a sense of Syd Walker's character as well as a few other characters mentioned and their background stories.

I’m so excited to be part of a traveling ARC program for this book, set to be released 10/28! I was the first member of my team to receive it and luckily was about to start a new book that day so I got to dive right in! This is a sequel to Blood Sisters, which I thoroughly enjoyed and this one takes place completely here in RI! I love it! What I enjoy most about these books is learning about the Native tribes and various traditions. This one especially, as it’s the Narragansett tribe and while I did learn some in school, I definitely didn’t learn all! I was also happy to revisit Syd and the characters we met in Blood Sisters. This picks up 3 months after the events of that book, so it’s nice to catch up and see how they are doing AFTER said events. This had me on the edge of my seat, I was SO worried about the fates of certain characters and I just FLEW through this. I had attended a Thriller Panel prior to the release of Blood Sisters and was told at the time that there would be a sequel so I’ve been impatiently waiting since I finished that one. Let’s just say, I was NOT disappointed! If you haven’t read Blood Sisters by @vanessalillie yet, good news, you have plenty of time to catch up before this one comes out!

Although this book involved a mystery within a Native American landscape - two areas I usually lap up, this one was problematic for me.
A few times it was the writing which need to be honed for a better fit, but I really thought the book was just too much. Too many people to keep track of (especially with names with the same beginning letter - a trap for me), too many agencies clamoring for control over the situations.
I was never sure who was wearing the white hats and who wore the black ones.
I never take more than 2 weeks to read my primary book. I'm glad it's over.

Vanessa Lillie is one of my favorites and she never disappoints! This book was just SO good, I didn't want it to end!

Syd Walker, an archeologist with the BIA, finds herself involved in a case near her home. She is summoned to a summer camp following the discovery of skeletal remains. However, when the remains vanish and a local native girl goes missing, the situation intensifies. Syd becomes entangled in the world of the privileged summer camp, where many parents are members of the exclusive Founders Society. This society, comprised of individuals who trace their ancestry to the original colonists, claims ownership of the land, despite the objections of the local tribe. As Syd investigates, she uncovers unsettling secrets about the society and realizes that this is not the first instance of a girl disappearing on this land.

This was a compelling read with an intriguing mystery. Full of heart pounding suspense and high tensions, this book was a total page-turner! It was thought-provoking and had great pacing! I loved learning about the Narragansett tribe and of course the setting of RI. Mentions of the Great Swamp Massacre and the Trail of Tears was definitely enlightening! Syd has become one of my favorite book characters and I loved seeing Luna helping her out with the case. Even though this is the 2nd book it can most definitely be read as a standalone. I absolutely loved this riveting, twisty thriller and I would HIGHLY recommend it!🩷

The Bone Thief // Release date: October 28th 2025!

Devoured this book! 5 stars for me, for a couple different reasons!!

First reason: need to preface, something about me is I am “mind blind” (have aphantasia). I have never been able to create or visualize stories/settings in my mind as I read them, and I never hear character voices when I read, etc. Sometimes, if I read books set in places I know or have been to, I can reference it to what I’ve seen in the past, but I can’t create visuals in my mind.

Something about the way Vanessa Lillie wrote this book, gave my “blind mind eye” the ability to visualize the setting of the camp/Founders society and dig sites. I have read several books where the authors writing is a perfect fit for my blind mind eye! These books are always a 5 star for me! I truly wish I could create visuals for all books I read as it truly did make me feel so much more immersed into the story! I felt included in the story, like I was there with Syd. Aim so jealous of those that can do that with every book they read!

Second reason: I absolutely LOVE her ability (and love) for adding facts into her fiction! History embedded into a thrilling twisty storyline. And it’s history that needs to be told!!

This book is a sequel to Blood Sisters, and we follow Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) archaeologist, Syd Walker, as she investigates the disappearance of a Native teen and the theft of newly discovered skeletal remains from a summer camp. Her investigation pulls her into a wealthy, exclusive club known as the Founders Society, which has long-standing, problematic ties to the land and a pattern of disappearances.

This storyline had me turning the page as fast as I could! Definitely stayed up way too late a couple nights to read this! Thank you Vanessa for including me on this traveling ARC team. I’m so thankful to be a part of it and being able to get a sneak peek into Syd’s newest investigation- she’s a bad ass! Can’t wait for everyone else to get to follow along as well ❤️

I devoured this book! I loved Blood Sisters (book 1), so I couldn’t wait to jump back into Syd’s world. While this one can be read as a standalone, I do recommend starting with book 1 — it adds extra depth and richness to Syd’s story.

Syd is such a compelling character: methodical in her science yet deeply rooted in her Indigenous heritage. As a BIA archaeologist, she beautifully blends both worlds while investigating the disappearance of an Indigenous woman and sacred ancestral remains. Her growth—learning to trust her instincts and her heritage—was one of my favorite parts.

I also loved seeing Luna, Syd’s sister, shine in this one! Fierce, loyal, and intuitive - she’s the perfect investigative partner as they dig into the chilling secrets of the Founders Society, a private club claiming ancestral rights to tribal lands.

Vanessa Lillie masterfully intertwines suspense with vital truths about missing and murdered Indigenous women, colonialism, and whitewashed history. It’s emotional, raw, and absolutely necessary reading.

👉 Don’t skip the Author’s Note! Lillie’s research is outstanding, and she shares excellent resources for continued learning.

🎧 Narration Note: Carolina Hoyos is phenomenal - authentic, heartfelt, and powerful. I split my time evenly between the physical and audio, and honestly? You can’t go wrong either way!

Final Verdict: 👍 Fast-paced. Dark. Thought-provoking. Totally binge-worthy. Already crossing my fingers for book 3 🤞Vanessa, please tell me Syd & Luna will be back! 💪

I loved this book so much. It is the second in a series, but note it reads just fine as a standalone. The audio is narrated by Carolina Hoyos, who does an incredible job and I enjoyed listening to her narration. I was hooked once I started this one, which starts off strong and holds the pace all the way through until that very intense ending. I was not sure how it was all going to turn out, which is my kind of thriller. I love how Lillie works in an education lesson in her books regarding the Indigenous people and how they continue to be mistreated, and The Bone Thief is no different, which makes this not just a thriller but an incredibly important read that I highly recommend. Make sure you read the author’s note at the end when done.

A huge thank you to @berkleypub for the digital copy to review and for having me on their tour, and thank you to @prhaudio for the ALC to review.
