#1 New York Times bestselling author Lucy Score, whose smash hit Things We Never Got Over captured millions of hearts, invites you back to Story Lake for a swoon-worthy new small town romantic comedy.

He's looking for the perfect wife. She's looking for the perfect one-night stand.

Literary agent Zoey Moody doesn't like small town life, but here she is: exiled from Manhattan's publishing scene and trapped in a tiny Pennsylvania town with her BFF and only remaining client, Hazel. The problem? She's totally broke.

All she needs is for Hazel's next romance novel to become a gigantic hit, and Zoey will be back in New York. Nothing will stand in her way. Nothing except her six-foot-two-inch landlord, Gage Bishop. He's smart, serious, and sexy. Worst of all, he's ready to settle down.

Zoey might be the most beautiful woman Gage has ever met, but it's clear they're all wrong for each other. She's allergic to commitment and can't work a calendar app; he's looking for a wife and has the next five years all planned out. She's afraid of animals. He lives in a literal barn. But when Gage's world is rocked by a devastating family secret, he turns to Zoey for one night to forget everything. That one night just might change everything…or ruin it.

Perfect for fans of the heart, humor, and hope found in Things We Never Got Over and Things We Left Behind, Mistakes Were Made is a steamy escape to small town romance―full of emotional twists, slow-burn tension, and Lucy Score's trademark charm.

Mistakes Were Made is another small town romance set in the over the top quirky fictional town of Story Lake.  The book picks up with the story of another bishop Brother (Gage) and  Zoey (Hazel's agent and BFF) . Gage is the very straight laced, organized, everything done the right way town lawyer who lives near his family in a barn while also working at the family business as a part time contractor. Zoey is presented as a complete opposite, fearful of animals, not near as close of a family, and basically a chaotic unorganized disaster.

Like most Lucy Score books this one is a big ol' book to get through. There are a lot of side characters and cast "extras" in order to lean into the quirky small town vibe in the story or to provide evidence of a backstory, but honestly some of it could have been cut to tighten up the rest of the story and make it a little more readable.  Some characters feel like they are just there to meet a word count. On a positive note though, the cast of many is clearly written to be as inclusive as possible.

Zoey's internal thoughts offer a very clear insight into why she is how she is and how she feels about it including the pressure that comes with being the type of person everyone sees as chaotic.  However, there is also a lot overdoing on the chaos in order to make a point and it can come really close to the line of being stereotypical. Gage is really a loveable golden retriever who is ultra organized to the point of being darn near perfection kind of leading man, until he isn't. Almost enough to make the reader question themselves if they really want to root for them to work out. For all of the fleshing out of the town characters and Zoey's history, Gage's reactions to things don't quite match up to his characters history. Perhaps if there was more detailed backstory in to his perfection instead of other random places it would have been an easier pill to swallow.  However, as the title says Mistakes Were Made, and sometimes you have to move past them because life isn't perfect.  One thing is for certain, the Bishop family as a whole makes for an excellent cast of characters and I'm excited to see Levy's story.

Overall, if you like Lucy Score you will like this book as well.  If you're looking for the very quirky small town romance, with a heavy emphasis on the town setting, you will love this series.

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book, don’t be too jealous!

Breathless!
Gage Bishop. Sigh. The swooniest hero ever written. A good man, an attorney, a construction contractor, a loyal son and brother. And so taken with the manic pixie Zoey, he falls off a roof the first time he sees her.
Zoey Moody. A big picture kind of woman with a heart as big as the ocean. Now if she could only remember where she put her car keys. Seemingly erratic, absentminded, flighty. Ahhh, but things are not as they appear with our fair literary agent heroine.
Gage has planned and organized every aspect of his life into neat little boxes, Zoey…not so much. And that’s what creates magic. You will be stunned breathless by the way Gage loves Zoey. I’ve never read anything like it and never wanted this book to end!
Story Lake once again takes a leading role in bringing a happily ever after to our new favorite couple, as well as a new side character that you will stand up and cheer for! Our old friend Goose also plays prominently in the Grand Gesture, which is as it should be! This whole book is perfect, and I couldn’t put it down! Big feelings, big belly laughs, maybe a big gulping sob or two.
Lucy Score is a sorceress who can plug directly into your heartstrings.

Color me surprised she's not pairing Zoey up with Levi. It was leaning either way. Levi was the only Bishop brother I found interesting so I'm glad he's not being paired up with Zoey. No shade but shade. 😬 I may just have to give this series another chance after all just to see who she pairs Levi up with...

I love this book! First time reading Lucy Score!

Zoey moved to a small town in Pennsylvania for a number of reasons. First, she’s broke, two, her best and only client, Hazel lives there. Hazel is an author and Zoey’s best friend. Hazel is also getting married to Gage Bishop’s brother.

Gage is a lawyer and real estate partner with his brothers. He’s also handsome, smart and looking for a woman to marry and start a family. Zoey is attracted to Gage but she avoids commitment like a plague. They are totally incompatible; or are they?!

Family, friends, and love highlight every turn of this great story. It’s fine as a standalone read and super entertaining.

Thanks Edelweiss and Bloom Books. I’m a new Lucy Score fan!

Gage Bishop and Zoey Moody know that they’re wrong for each other. But if they’re so wrong, why do they keep ending up drawn together? The follow-up to my favorite book of 2025, Story of My Life, did not disappoint! I loved being pulled back into Story Lake, and following up with Cam, Hazel, and the rest of the crazy townspeople. Gage is a dream, and Zoey is so relatable as she navigates her hot mess of a life. I just wish I could visit this town IRL!

Let me start off by saying I am a FAN of Lucy Score! If you are also a fan of Lucy Score, you will not be disappointed in “Mistakes Were Made.” This is the follow up to “Story of My Life,” and it jumps right into the intense chemistry between Gage Bishop, small town contractor, lawyer, and all around good guy and Zoey Moody, a big city publicist and fly by the seat of your pants kind of gal. The first time he saw her he literally fell off a roof because he was so enraptured (which happened in the first book so go back and read that first!). This is the classic opposites attract with a stellar cast of side characters in an incredibly charming setting.
I love how the town of Story Lake is almost a character itself with the townspeople promoting it and defending it from the evil neighboring town of Dominion. And the side characters are so fully realized that I am vested in ALL of them! From every member of the Bishop family, to old Opal and George, to the crazy cast of animal friends like Goose the eagle to brand new Buttercup the baby pit bull puppy, I want to know what happens with them next! And we get to revisit Hazel and Cam and their crazy raccoon, cat, and puppy filled home!!!
This book was a welcome back to Story Lake, where I would definitely like to live, and a not-subtle-at-all homage to everyone who has ever felt simultaneously “too much, and not enough.” Were the characters a bit over the top, yes. Was it perfect for this story, also yes! I live for this type of character self development (although I will admit there was a time when Gage was a bit too rough and out of character). There is spice, there is family drama, there is personal reflection, and all types of friendships. I recommend you suspend disbelief, put any judginess aside, and enjoy this book as the delightful escapism it is.

I absolutely LOVED Mistakes Were Made by Lucy Score. It is that perfect book that you don't want to stop reading, but you can't stop reading because it's so good. I truly just wanted to live in Zoey's world and be a part of the Bishop family and have Hazel as a best friend. Score did such a good job making me feel like I was actually immersed in their world, but seriously...I want these characters in my real life!! The Bishop family dynamics were absolute perfection. I laughed out loud (very loud) is so many places throughout the book that my daughter actually asked me what the heck I was reading. Score's sense of humor is absilutely spot on! I have not read the first book in the Story Lake series, but you better believe I had already requested it before I even finished Mistakes Were Made. I just want to spend more time in this world. Story Lake reminds me so much of Stars Hollow and Gilmore Girls...the ultimate compliment from me. Please please please make this into a movie, a series...literally anything. I'm hoping we will get to see Levi and Laura both find the HEA in future Score novels....

Another score fro Lucy Score. No one writes romance with a side of comedy like Lucy Score. I loved the first Story Lake book and was super excited to start this new advanced Arc from the publishers. Zoey is a ball of fire, a self proclaimed mess, but has a heart of gold. She may be a bit all over the place and might leap before she looks, but there is a reason for that. Enter Gage. One of the three brothers who we met in the first book. Lawyer by day, construction worker for fun. Neat, organized, and likes everything just so.
So when Gage and Zoey start getting to know each other, sparks go flying. The whole town of Story Lake is here for this coupling. Both people bring out the best and feistiest in each other. What could possibly go wrong? This book is sweet on romance and funny in the comedy department. I can't wait to go back to Story Lake and see what Hazel will write about Levi next!!!

Mistakes Were Made by Lucy Score

A swoony, opposites attract small town rom com that leans hard into heart, humor, and emotional timing. What makes this book special is the role reversal tension. She wants one night and an escape plan. He wants roots, structure, and a future mapped out. Their chemistry crackles because they’re both exactly what the other insists they don’t want, until life forces them to stop pretending.

Tropes & Vibes:
🏡 Small town romance
🔥 One night changes everything
💔 Commitment phobe meets marriage minded MMC
🐶 City girl versus country life
😂 Lucy Score banter and charm

Read this if you like:
Slow burn rom coms with emotional depth, grumpy practical MMCs, FMCs running from commitment, small towns full of heart, and romances where the “mistake” turns out to be exactly right.

After reading book one in this series (and loving everything about it) I immediately turned my attention to my ARC of Mistakes Were Made. I loved this one too. Thanks to Edelweiss for giving me the chance to read and review it.

Not only do all the wonderful characters play a big part it, we get to continue Cam and Hazels journey. We get to be part of the wonderful town with all its charm. We get to delight in the animals and the chaos. And we get to watch another wonderful couple fall in love.

Gage and Zoey are opposite in every way but so perfect together. I adore both of them and watching them figure out how to be a couple, overcome the past and fall in love was so amusing and satisfying. This book is funny, it will make you laugh out loud, tear up and smile. This book, this series, is what we all need right now.

When does the next book come out? I for one can’t wait.

Lucy Score has done it again with her second installment in the Story Lake series. This time we have Zoey and Gage and you couldn’t have two more completely opposite people. But you know what they say about opposites… and the chemistry between this pair is undeniable, yet it sometimes comes with hilarious results.

Even though Lucy has her usual sense of humor fully intact, with the bra stealing antics of the crazy eagle ‘Goose’ and the wildest of bingo events/rules, she handles some more sensitive topics relating to neuro-divergence and grief in the most compassionate and perceptive of ways.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend the series for anyone who wants a whole lot of fun with all the feels!

Literary agent Zoey Moody has only left the bright lights of NYC for the small town of Story Lake, Pennsylvania because her best friend (& only client) needs her. She has no intention of becoming the equivalent of a rom-com heroine by falling in love- even if the town & its inhabitants have a certain kind of irresistible charm. So when "love them and leave them" Zoey meets "picket fence and forever dreams" Gage Bishop, she knows that she should avoid him at all costs. But...one night wouldn't be too much to ask, right? Quirky, sweet, and a whole lot of fun, readers will find this couple- and the town of Story Lake, hard to resist.

Thank you to Bloom Books/Sourcebooks for providing this ARC.

This new series is already starting to compete for my favorite of Lucy Score’s. It follows Gage Bishop and Zoey in a heartwarming, hilarious, pull at your heartstrings love story. I can’t get enough of the Story Lake main characters and the side characters just add so much life to this series. Zoey is the best friend and publicist of Hazel from Story of My Life (Book 1). Gage, the younger brother of the Bishop crew is a lawyer and also helps his family with pretty much everything. Zoey and Gage dance around the “will they or won’t they”, but when they do? Let’s just say these two have the perfect chemistry! Zoey and Gage seem a sure thing but there are some hang ups they both have and they are worried about making a big mistake. Highly recommend and must read book 1 to truly enjoy!

Zoey is a literary agent and her best friend, Hazel, is her client. Hazel lives in Story Lake getting ready to marry Cam Bishop. Zoey moves to be with Hazel until her book comes out. Gage is Cam's brother and is infatuated with Zoey and her quirky ways. Zoey has had her heart broken before so is only interested in one-night stands, no relationships. The little town of Story Lake is full of busybodies, animals, festivities and folks who will go all out to help. The activities and the way they go about them will bring you smiles. The differences in Zoey and Gage make for an interesting relationship but the love is overwhelming. Great book.

I'm only slightly convinced that Ms. Score laces her novels with addictive substances. It was so hard going about life knowing that I had this book to come back to, I wanted to just skip adult responsibilities and inhale it all at once.

Not only does this novel deliver on a classic Lucy Score romance, it also did a spectacular job highlighting what living with ADHD is like. Particularly for an adult woman diagnosed later in life. I'll be honest, I cried reading portions of this novel that so closely paralleled my own experiences.

This was a beautiful book and I'm already excited to reread it once the audiobook comes out.

I read Mistakes Were Made over a weekend because, when it comes to Lucy Score, I can never pace myself! I love all her books! They’re always so entertaining, packed with heart and humor, and this Story Lake series is just wonderful. Zoey and Gage’s dynamic grabbed me right away. She’s chaos in heels, he’s basically a handsome human spreadsheet. I loved the banter, the slow burn tension, and the way the author mixes laugh out loud moments with unexpected depth. It’s a fun, swoony, small town escape that delivers exactly what I want from this series!

My thanks to NetGalley for making an eARC of this book available for my review.

Another enjoyable book by this author, who excels at quirky small town characters, strong yet flawed and vulnerable love interests, great patter, and lots of laugh-out-loud moments. This book meets all of those criteria. I'm just hoping that the author doesn't stop with just the three brothers' stories, but gives us a love story for the widowed sister as well.

A fun enemies to lovers rom-com. Zoey has been fired from her publishing job and is now in small town PA with her only remaining client, Hazel. She is trying to get Hazel to write another best seller and get Zoey back on her feet and back in the game. Zoey thrives on the hustle and bustle of city life, but will make due in Story Lake in order to get Hazel to write. Gabe has grown up in Story Lake and has a thriving law practice and construction company. He is looking to settle down, raise a family. When he and Zoey meet, sparks fly - and not the good kind. Zoey is caos. Gabe is calm. They are not a good match. Has that ever stopped anyone before?
The second in the Story Lake series, but can be read as a stand alone.
