A Break of Day is book seven in the series A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest. This, though the series is slated for a book eight, is the end of Derek and Sofia’s story. Will they get their happy ending?
I do admit that I had a little trouble in the beginning picking up the thread of all that is going on. The plot has become somewhat complicated. The Shade is in shambles. The Elders are taking over the bodies of the vampires and the Hawks have an evil agenda of their own. Vampires are dying, and humans are dying. It didn’t take long, though, when it all came back together and I was immersed into the plights of The Shade and Derek and Sofia’s struggles.
Ever since the end of book six when Sofia gave birth to the twins, their family has not been together. Their son, Ben, is kidnapped. Ibrahim and Corrine have Rose. Sofia is nowhere to be found and according to the end of book six, is now a vampire. How can this even be true since she is an immune?
“Is there only so much pain a man can stand before he becomes irreparably broken?”
Derek had all his dreams at his fingertips, a wife, two beautiful children, only to have it all ripped away from him. At the same time, he is still struggling to control his own newly developed powers.
This book is pretty non-stop. The Elders are truly evil and I wondered if the damage to The Shade would ever be repairable. And time and time again, Sofia and Derek would find their way back to each other only to be separated yet again. You don’t know who you can trust. And some unexpected alliances are also formed.
If you haven’t started this series yet, you need to start at the beginning. Each book is a direct continuation of the previous book. If you enjoy vampires, romance, lots of suspense and action, numerous villains, and a book about life on an island beyond anything you could ever have imagined, this series is for you. I have enjoyed every minute of it. Will I continue on with book eight, A Shade of Kiev? Just try to keep me away. Thank you so much, Bella Forrest, for your wild imagination. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
This book concludes the series and ties up all the remaining loose ends. The true motivations for the actions of The Ageless are finally revealed and the war between the Guardians and the Elders is explained. Derek and Sophia have to make tremendous sacrifices in order to reunite their family.
This book covers a lot of change in a very short amount of time. Since it has been a while since I read the prior books in the series, it took me a few chapters to remember exactly where the story had left off, and what the history was for each of the characters. However, it didn't detract from the story and it all came back to me quickly.
I have enjoyed this series. Each quick, short book in the series is action-packed. The characters are compelling and there are plenty of twists and turns along the way. Most importantly, a happy ending awaits. :)
I enjoy the series although it gets a bit draggy at times. and with the latest book I was kinda disappointed with the ending. I would like it more if things worked for Sophia and Derek.
Despite I loved the series, Derek and Sofia's final story was such a disappointment. Actually, the series much to my surprise slowly but sure meet its down fall. I can't help to not notice things that I disliked in each sequel after book 4.
Looking back now, I think I can bear reading a lot of POV, if it means that I can get the clarity in the story. I don't know, maybe Bella Forrest read my review or other Shaddicts have the same thoughts as mine about those POV, but this book is told mostly from Sofia and Derek's POV. Just like the first book, A Shade of Vampire. The problem is both Derek and Sofia barely know anything. Reading their final journey to find True Sanctuary was like walking in the dark. They don't have any idea what they are facing and what they have to do. It was just so frustrating!
I usually enjoy reading something that still unclear along the story as it sometimes means it’s unpredictable and there's twist in the story. Not in this case. Derek and Sofia just go with the flow and mostly end up asking each other "What now?" Or "Now what?" Hence I felt like there isn't clarity and certainty of where the story will go.
As Derek and Sofia keep in blind most of the time, other characters have the answer of their questions. It reveals slowly along the story. Unfortunately, before the answers finally reveals, I was already frustrated with them and the story. Thus it made me bored to death. I was so eager to finish it. Not because it's so engaging but because so I can put it down for good so that I can move on to other books.
There are also things that really annoyed me while I read. Just like Derek and Sofia, I have questions about so many things. Some of them are finally answered but some other are just left behind. Even the characters who have answers, can't answers those questions. And they are so casually tell me they don't have the answers because it happened a long time ago or never happen before. They left it behind the reasons and I just couldn't accept it.
I think this book isn't about vampires anymore, as most of the time they rely on the witches/warlock. So you see, whenever things get hard, the witches/warlock come to help them. And suddenly it solves easily. It made the war that I really looking forward felt anticlimactic. And there is also thing that comes out of the blue, much for the characters convenience. I just don't know what to call it, too coincidence or too easy?
According to Goodreads, 2 stars means it was an okay book. I think in a way it was an okay conclusion for Derek and Sofia. I liked the ending, for sure, too bad there are also a lot of things I disliked. I think I need a break from this series, though after this one there is a spin-off of Kiev's story. And who knows whether there will be another spin-off of the vampire saga or not.
I really enjoyed the first five books, but I was less impressed with books 6 & 7. The beginning five were so great that I just couldn't put them down. This one I read quickly just to see how the author was going to resolve the series. I think they got to far-fetched for me in the last couple with the hawks and bodyless elders that possessed vampires.
Please oh please let book 7 be the last of the series. There really shouldn't of been a book six, but after reading all six books I'm hoping it ends with a happy ending. Otherwise I'm so done.
A Break of Day is the finale of one of my favorite series, A Shade of Vampire. Finally it has come to a conclusion. I have to admit, after reading the book, I kind of miss the whole series. I miss the characters that I have grown to love since last year. I miss the beauty of The Shade, the all-consuming and magical world of the vampires, and of course, the beautiful characters. Okay, now I’m getting all sentimental.
Stay strong, Sofia. You’re no stranger to storms. The waves may rage, but you can rise above them.
Anyway, the book is good. I admit that I have greater expectations since I was totally imagining a different plot, twist, and ending. But although it didn’t exactly meet my expectations, I was relieved because of its happy ending.
What I admire about this book, despite the tormenting events and situations that happened to the characters all throughout the book, is how Derek and Sofia’s love became even stronger. I can’t help but fall in love with them all over again!
And oh, the way Derek describes Sofia– it’s deep and emotional!
Sofia. The love of my life. The person without whom all would be for nothing. My ever-burning light. My break of day.
I think the characters deserve the good things that happen to them in the end and I’m really happy for them. This book is memorable and it’s the series that will totally stay on my mind. :)
My Rating for this Book: 4 Stars (It wasn’t a perfect book but its ending is satisfying and unforgettable.)
‘You’re no stranger to storms. The waves may rage, but you can rise above them.”
Finally! I come to the epic conclusion of Derek and Sofia’s story! After the shocking events of the previous book I couldn’t wait to see how things turn out for these two. I couldn’t put the book down and read the whole thing in one day. Derek and Sofia have been through so much since they met and fell in love, but this book shows that they are survivors and no matter what is thrown at them they can rise above. They are truly stronger together, this fact was proven time and time again all throughout this series. Of course in true fashion, there were still several obstacles they had to overcome in this book before they could find their HEA. If you thought what they were up against in the past was dangerous, the enemies in this book were far worse. The showdown between the Elders, the Hawks and the Witches was exciting and kept me flipping the pages! I loved how everything came together and the outcome was great and I got a little teary eyed in the last few chapters.
While I loved seeing all the other characters’ viewpoints in the other books, I liked that in this book (save for 1 chapter and the epilogue) it got back to just switching between Sofia and Derek. I think that at this point in the journey and with the future of their relationship and The Shade at stake it was fitting that we only got to see things from their POV. The one chapter that we did see from Vivienne’s POV did fit in perfectly though and I’m glad we got to see that particular part through her eyes. I also loved the state of The Shade at the end and seeing what became of all of the beloved characters was great. I am going to miss this crew but the author definitely has a wonderful pool of characters to choose from should she decide to write more books set in this world! Until then though I am interested to learn more about Kiev in the latest book, that’s sure to be quite the ride!
‘All of the bad and good things that come with living become worthwhile one we find love.’
I can't believe this is the ending of Sofia and Derek's story, but it was a great one. This couple have been through hell and back, but never stop loving each other, searching for each other, and looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. They finally get their HEA at the end of this book; and so do some other people.
Can't wait to read Bella's next book "A Shade of Kiev".
Ok. I was in italy and I wanted something to read to fall asleep nothing too engaging or complicated so I decided to go with this series for young adults. What was the writer thinking was my last thought as I ended the 7th book in the series. Ok the rule about writing supernatural or fantasy books is that you can't just pull things out of nowhere. J.R.R. Tolkien literally spent years developing the back stories of creatures in his books. J.K. Rowling has an entire 10 page description of the three uses of dragon blood (mentioned in a sentence in her book). I understand this author was aspiring to write like none of these legendary writers but please atleast try to write a coherent story. She literary added whatever she needed to keep the series going and keep the two protagonists apart from each other. Creating new realms, and new creatures that have no rhyme or reason for existing in her story....creating cures that are not really cures....giving a vampire turned human witch powers just to keep the hero strong??? Turning an immune into a vampire just for the sake of keeping the angst going and then above all just killing important characters left and right in a failed attempt to gain sympathy for Sophia and Derek. This book makes the House of Night and the Mortal Instrument (a badly plagiarized version of harry potter) look good.
Oh my gosh. It's so bad. Why do people like this series? My head hurt from rolling my eyes so much throughout this book. The writing is so juvenile. Also, could it have been tied up in a prettier bow?! Dear Lord. It was like the author pulled what she liked out of the Twilight series and then added even more fluffy nonsense and rainbows. It felt like it was written by a 17 year old in the throws of first love.
I'm so glad to be finished with this series. Twilight is an upgrade from this and at least more original. Ugh, I feel like I need to read some Jane Austen to cleanse my brain of this.
Woah! I was expecting a twist with the ending of the last one, this one has just as many! This one blues more lines of who is an ally to Derek or Sophia (and then you get to question if they are each others...) and who wants them all destroyed. I liked how they ended the arc but it was almost too happy all things considered what goes done. Too perfect and therefore unrealistic. The biggest surprise was Kiev and it has me eager to read his tale. ANd I must say I hate Arron as much as the elders I think!
This series is really good and those who love vampires books will love this. I can see how some could saw this is twilightish because of the main characters chemistry with each other. However it is not Twilight. This series encompasses so much more than that one. The rest of this series is now a new adventure with the Novak's and their teenage twins. Will I continue to read the series? Absolutely!
Don't talk to me about these books ever. I'm so angry all the time that they exist. ( please ignore that I read 7, I don't know why. I was angry for every second)
Overall this was an okay read. I wanted to know more about these characters and where the story was going. I ended up flying through this book, so it definitely held my attention.
One of the inconsistencies that really annoyed me was the beach house.
Another was
The ending was too easy. I still plan to continue with the series, because for whatever reason it has me hooked, but this was one of my least favorites so far.
Book Review - A Shade of Vampire: A Break of Day by Bella Forrest Introduction This is the conclusion to Sofia and Derek's journey. Derek is trying to find his wife Sofia, after she gave birth. Derek has one of his twins, Rose but someone snatched the other, Ben. So Derek is trying to find them to reunite his family. There are so many possibilities to where Sofia could have been taken that he doesn't know where to start. As for looking for his son, Ben, he has no idea at all where he could of been taken too.
I don't think I have a favourite character because they are all amazing in this series and I love them all. My best character is Vivienne. I loved her from when we first meet her at the start of this series. She has got to be my favourite because she has been through a lot but is still fighting for her family. Nothing can break her and I would love to have her as a best friend. She is a lovely vivid character with a great personality and I would love to know her myself! :) LOL The characters felt very real to me. I cried and laughed with this book, I cried when Vivenne finally realised she loved Xavier, but thought he was dead, it broke my heart. I laughed after Vivienne and Xavier got married and everyone got on stage and started kissing along with them. I cried because Ashley had lost Sam. She is a lovely girl. I loved this series from the start and have been patiently waiting for each book to come out at a time. The one thing I have loved about this series is that every book keeps you guessing. You can never predict what is going to happen and if you try to it will more then likely be the opposite of what you thought. My favourite part of the book was when Sofia had changed back into a human again and went to breastfeed her babies for the first time. She has Derek holding her while she is breastfeeding, what a perfect moment after all they have been through. I also loved the last chapter about Kiev, I can not wait to find out more about him in the next book. I'm very intrigued by him. All of this book was written well for me, I experienced the emotions with the characters and loved every minute of reading it. This book like the rest in the series has kept me gripped and wanting more. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down and I finished within a day and had a late night reading session with it! :)
Summary I love love LOVED this book. I wish there would be more on Sofia and Derek but I know they got the ending they deserved and what a great ending it was for them! Everyone needs to read this book! I would recommend to anyone that likes reading! LOL This book just can not be compared to any other!
It seems an age since I read the first 'Shade' book, well I suppose it was really, back before I wrote reviews. I'd put vampire in my search and 'a Shade of Vampire' came up, it was free there were no reviews to go by but the blurb intrigued me so I started reading and within a couple of pages I was hooked, I was so impressed I emailed Bella to tell her, after all this was her first book and it was fantastic, since then I wait for the email letting me know when a new book is due and they never disappoint each one seems better than the last. This book picks up where 'Gate' finished, after giving birth to twins Rose and Ben Sofia collapses and misses Kiev kidnapping Ben only moments after his birth, Sofia is taken by The Ageless and given to The Elders. Derek is devastated without Sofia and Ben, he just has to find Sofia but where does he start and who can he trust to look after Rose. Meanwhile The Elders are ravaging The Shade and it's looking unlikely The Shade will survive along with everyone in there. This book is a brilliant end to a brilliant series, it's takes us through a full range of emotions but ultimately this is the book we all wanted, so thank you Bella. Although this is the last book for Derek and Sofia I very much doubt it's the last we'll see of them and as we all now know the next book belongs to Kiev 'A Shade of Kiev' is out in September.
Favorite Lines “What happened to a king when he was forced to battle with his queen?"
“My ever-burning light. My break of day.”
“Revenge is not a cause, it’s a controlling obsession’.”
“All of the bad and good things that come with living become worthwhile once we find love. I should know. I found it in the most unlikely of places, didn’t I?”
What a perfect ending to a heartwarming, bloody, yummy, sexy, kick ass series! Sophia and Derek are one of the best couples ever written. They have a love the literally chases the dark away!! This author is amazing and I'm thrilled to know that she will continue with other characters from The Shade! Can't way!
Well, I have to say that I'm very pleased with the last instalment of this series and am grateful that Bella Forest wrote the books.
I agree with some reviews that the series may have dragged a little and that It could've been 5 books rather than 7, but the books are amazing all the same.
Although the start if this book is a little confusing, you will get into it, and I promise you that the book does get better. You'll love this book as much as the previous 6.
So, thank you Bella for an awesome series that has actually managed to hold my attention for a change. I can't wait to get the next instalment divulging onto Kiev's story.
Holy smokes, what a ride! This book had me on my toes from the start to finish. I am not going to give any spoilers away. But if you haven't read the previous books, go read them now. My heart serious felt for everyone in this book. Things kept happening one after another. I didn't know if any of them would catch a break. Then...epicness! What a way to sum most of it up. But it's not the end of the series. No even close! This is a must read for paranormal romance fans. And fans of this series will love this book. But watch out, it will consume you.
For this to be the final book for these 2 is really not possible there is way to much left unsaid although I have continued to read this series because it does have a halfway decent storyline I'm still not all in and after 7 books I definitely should be why do I continue to read this series is beyond me maybe it's the part of me that Iikes to finish what I started
OK these books are still gripping and enjoyable but I'm finding my self saying its just another vampire book. Its bringing into the story line elders originals and witches and I'm just like so are all these other books. Its still good I still enjoyed it but don't see my self reading the hole series.
